Charlie Rangel on Debt: We Must Increase Taxes

Following yesterday’s vote on raising the debt limit, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) appeared on Fox Business with Judge Andrew Napalitano to talk about the nation’s debt problem. He offered a solution that he says “makes so much sense.” That plan? It includes raising taxes:

“All I know is, whenever you have any type of a problem and the problem is one that you spend more than you are actually bringing in then you have to bring in more and spend less. It just makes so much sense, Judge, it’s all we have to do.”

    I would not have a huge problem with a modest tax increase, but only on certain conditions:

    1. There need to be SERIOUS spending cuts FIRST. I am not giving you one more dime until you can show you can be responsible with what you are already getting. The US government is not a sugar daddy. Quit acting like it.

    2. Taxes should increase for EVERYONE, not just 5% of Americans. Almost half of Americans pay no taxes, yet they still whine that the rich aren’t paying enough. waaah waaah waaah, it’s not FAIR. They sound like a dang 5 year old who is crying because it’s “not fair” their big sister has money for the ice cream man. Well, she did her chores and got allowance, now shut up and go clean your room.

    3. Ditch tax breaks for stupid crap. I was listening to an ad for a solar power system touting how you could get a tax credit for installing it. They also have credits for hybrid cars. Liberals complain about tax breaks for the rich, but who the heck is buying solar panels for their house and showy hybrid cars? Rich LIBERALS. The middle class can’t afford them. So I guess SOME tax breaks for the rich are OK.

      We need to institute a flat tax or fair tax or taxes on consumption where everyone has some skin in the game!! Take away the means for politicans to pay back their political cronies with tax breaks…….. like GE and other large corporations. Until “we the people” take away the means they are using to control us through taxation, the control will get greater and greater.       The problem is that if they raise taxes BEFORE cutting taxes, they will just lock us into even more spending in the future. How about the Dems. saying to the rich, “We will raise your taxes only to pay on the old debt, and we will GUARANTEE it by law”. Then we will decreases the spending as to equal current spending.

      I remember in a graduate level economics class studying a proof that showed that tax rates above 28% always lead to more fraud than increased revenue. Why is this so hard for liberals to understand, guess it’s not, they just want to set the max rate at 75% they know they won’t pay anyway, so they can set the poor and middle class rates to a level half that to make the poor and middle class think they are getting a break that doesn’t exist.

      Try living within your means LIKE YOU WANT US ALL TO DO. Practice what you preach for a change. Personally, I have absolutely NO DEBT, but it was not always that way. I had to discipline myself TO DO WITHOUT for a long time until my debt was paid off. I was $30k in debt. It took a long time, but the result and rewards are GREAT. Yes, it will be painful for some, but Christians need to help those who need help!       To those of you that believe that taxing business is the answer to the OVER-SPENDING problem. To those that have Verizon service, (or name your business), what do you think would happen to your Verizon bill if their taxes were increased? Yup, you bill would go up to cover the cost. Business does NOT pay taxes… YOU, the consumer, pay ALL taxes.

      Here is an idea on how to solve the OVER-SPENDING problem. Get the federal government out of the business of trying to run our li8ves and back into its real job. Defend the borders and protect our rights. Article 1, Section 8 is the only powers that Congress is supposed to have.

      cutting expenses and raising revenue is the only way out of the hole. you have to do both. the rich should shoulder a little more of the tax burden, being that they have benefited far greater than the rest have. the middle class has been taxed enough, and poor people don’t have much to give anyway. the country thrived under clinton (who raised taxes on the rich), and died under bush (who dropped them, while increasing spending). the idea that the wealthy “create jobs” with tax breaks, is a stupid myth. if jobs are being created, they are overseas.

      cut spending, cut the military, and if you want to win the election next year, cutting medicare and social security isn’t the way to go.

      Charlie, bother to actually study history. Say, JFK the economy was sluggish when he was elected, and what did he do? HE CUT TAXES and cut spending. The answer is to cut SPENDING. Remove redundancies, remove useless bureaucracies, and alter how the “entitlement programs” run altogether, then we might stand a chance.
