Charlotte Cops Preparing For Potential Riots Ahead of Dem. Convention

Police forces in Charlotte, NC, are preparing for unruly crowds when the 2012 Democratic National Convention comes to town, according to recent reports.

“Charlotte’s police department is already stocking up on riot gear and training officers in riot-control techniques in preparation for the event,” Newser reports.

Although the city already has a few hundred trained riot police, they have decided to recruit almost every one of them for intensive riot training—just in case.

So what goes into “intensive” riot training?

“It’s a very controlled, measured response with a lot of practice,” said Deputy Chief Harold Medlock. Medlock is overseeing the training, which also includes hundreds of officers from nearby police and sheriff’s departments, according to WSOCTV.com.

“The point of some of the tactics and the maneuvers that we use is to allow folks to have the time to do what we’re asking them to do,” Medlock said in the report.

“We want them to hear us as we move and do the things that we need to do, so you‘ll hear a lot of verbalization from our officers and one of the things you’ll hear is, ‘Move back!’” he added.

Medlock made sure to note that riot training is not unheard of for the city’s police officers. Hundreds of Charlotte’s officers have already been trained in riot control and have actually been called in to handle trouble in uptown twice in the last five years, reports WSOCTV.

But given the fact that the DNC will most likely be bigger than anything they’ve handled in recent years, Charlotte has decided to call up several officers from their regular beats to participate in the training.

“We are structured so that we have officers that can backfill in the divisions that send officers out,” Medlock said in the report. “Our citizens should see no change in service delivery.”

By Medlock’s measurement, the Democratic National Convention will be the “biggest event the city has hosted.”

“We‘re going to do everything that we can to make sure that it’s a safe and secure event,” Medlock said.

In case you were wondering, the Federal government, not Charlotte, will be financing all the training, gear and extra hours. But again, this is not unheard of.

According to four police departments tasked with protecting people at the DNC, the Feds usually supply about $50 million in grants for equipment and training, reports WSCOTV.

Exit question: As mentioned before, preparing for riots ahead of the RNC or DNC is nothing new. But given the swelling numbers of Occupy Wherever protests, and the magnitude of the DNC, do you think measurements being taken by Charlotte will be adequate to handle what could possibly be a very, very unruly crowd?

      Cops need to take a look in the mirror and decide whose side they are on. The people & Constitution they took an oath to protect or being a bunch of automatons that follow orders.

      As for any potential riot it will be the liberals who start it. Look at the Occupy movement and how they are trashing cities around the country. Look at their counterparts over seas, that have now gotten quite violent (1 dead so far in Athens). Compare all of these examples with 8/28 or a 9/12 event. After 8/28 the Mall was left spotless, and 9/12 no arrests, no one walking around with their faces masked or holding socialist marxist and anarchists propaganda. Its always the left that starts the fight. Know why? Because they know they are wrong and “got nothing” when you get to the bare bones of a discussion/debate. They get so enraged they have nothing left but personal then physical attacks.

      All these getting a trophy for participating drones will be he ones to draw first blood at any election related event. More than enough examples out there to support my opinion. We need to take steps to avoid it at all cost as they need violence for this machine they are building. Do not engage these zombie drones.       The Police Officers have no choice in the matter, the do what they are ordered to do because they must. I should say that I too am a Police Officer who has no like for Obama, but I still had to assist in his security when he came to my town.

    How many TEA party Conservatives marched on Washington without incident and actually left the place cleaner than when they arrived? There is no comparison between Conservatives and Liberals. I need not explain further, watch the news. I think too many misinformed people equate the TEA party as Republicans. Just because Republican ideals are closer to Conservative ideals does not make the TEA party Republican. The TEA party are Conservatives and nothing else. If it is made up of more Republicans than Democrats this does not mean it is Republican, only that the Republican ideals more closely resemble Conservatism and thus the membership reflects this. I believe that the TEA party Conservatives need to do more to point this out. I know the last election cycle spoke volumes about Conservatism and no matter what political party you belong, you‘ll be thrown to the curb if you don’t tow the line and stick to the constitution. Americans seem to have short memories. The TEA party needs more face time to get the message out. Conservative rallies are good especially when compared to the liberal gatherings. On one side you have neat, clean, civil people gathered about peacefully on the other you have destruction, violence, garbage strewn, open sewer, rampant drug use, sexual acts in public and last but certainly not least the horrible smell eminating from nasty people who haven’t bathed. The pictures of both groups in side by side comparison speaks louder than any political message.

    This isn’t what it seems, the “ militarization” of local police forces has been happening since 9/11, and the ramping up of such training is excelerating of late.
    Drudge has a report of VIPER ( TSA ) teams now setting up check stations in Tennessee, off of I40.
    This in conjunction with other recient news, a massive “TSA /DHS drill” in Colorado and other items speak to a validation of the greatest fear ( or hope ) I see offered quite frequently here at the Blaze, MARTIAL LAW is soon upon us.
    I hope you’ve prepared, stocked up on food, water, a power supply, winters coming and it’s going to be the harshest one in American history I think.

      You are the techno wiz around here so I’ll let you do the research, but my guess is that the rioters at the RNC were lefties being their usual self and causing trouble.

      My guess is that it will also be lefties causing the problems at their own convention.

      It is usually lefties that act this way.

      Just an educated guess though.

    having lived outside of Charlotte for several years, i can attest to the fact that the Charlotte police are right in preparing for this. the city is filled with people just waiting for a reason to start a riot. this will give them a massive platform to do just that. then when you add in all the muppets they will bus in, its a startling reality. will make for interesting coverage from the MSM.

      Charlotte PD is definitely doing the right thing. When I was stationed at Bragg back in the late ’70s we had to do riot training all of the time. Have only been to one riot and I can say that neither the training nor the real thing is fun. Just a necessity. I hear your warning of locals ready to riot, but you have to consider the “professional” rioters the left wing loons will bus in. They are the ones to really be concerned with.

      Little known fact here Norm. Most people when tarred and feathered did not survive. The melting point of tar is rather high causing 2nd and third degree burns when applied to the flesh.. Most victims would linger in agony for several hours and sometimes days before they expired. So what’s the good news? You don’t have to worry with a hanging.       Drakkhanlord you are most certainly correct. I have often said that when TSHITF the first looter I shoot will be displayed prominently as a warning to others. Of course a sign will go around the neck stating “Looters Shot on Sight”, you know, for those that are a littte slow and need a bit more than just visual cues. If, and I believe it will, come to tha,t you must be prepared. Desperate people will do desperate things, especially if they think you have something they need. GB talks about being charitable in times such as when TSHITF but I’m warning you, you had better be careful. Who you give a few cans of beans to feed his family may well show up that night, shoot you and take everything. Don’t tip your hand so to speak.

    Parts of Charlotte are scary enough now…I can only imagine what it will be like when the unwashed hordes are joined by van jones, union thugs, anarchists, and leftist operatives to affect mayhem before the national tv cameras…especially if obama’s ratings are in the toilet next summer.

    Expect these protests will decend down on the national conventions with mass and force; while they may not (again, may not) turn major violence with the Democratic convention, expect them to have blood in their eyes and clubs out with flaming torches when the Republican convention comes up and for the Tea Party and Conservatives being blamed for the messes the radicals cause.

      Serious question: Who do they think is going to riot?
      Surely not the OWC crowd..remember the Dems say they support this peaceful grassroots movement. The Tea Party….they have no history of rioting and have not encouraged or recruited people to riot. Maybe they’re expecting that unruly Sesame Street group or the Glitter Group?

      And I agree about the RNC. Orchestrated rioting will be out in full force.
