Are you ready for doomsday? The cast of National Geographic Channel’s new series “Doomsday Preppers” thinks they are.
Set to premiere Feb. 7, the show follows the lives of ordinary Americans who just happen to also be preparing for the end of the world:
Unique in their beliefs, motivations, and strategies, preppers will go to whatever lengths they can to make sure they are prepared for any of life’s uncertainties. And with our expert’s assessment, they will find out their chances of survival if their worst fears become a reality.
Sound familiar? GBTV’s “Independence U.S.A.” tracks the Belcastro family as they try to go “off the grid,” preparing for the worst as well.

NatGeo highlights eight different groups of preppers on their show: There’s Megan Hurwitt, the “young urban prepper” living in Houston, Texas. She’s preparing to survive a catastrophic oil crisis and carries a “go bag” with her at all times, which includes a mess kit, survival knife, compass, pepper spray, family photos and even an electronic card featuring medical, financial and identification information.
Termed the “godfather prepper,“ Dennis Evers has 11 children and a ”growing army” of grandchildren. He’s bracing for global chaos resulting from hyperinflation, and has been training his family to survive on his rural Colorado farm, where he’s built a miniature town complete with a miniature church and convenience store.
Dennis McClung, “the suburban prepper,” lives with his wife and two kids in Phoenix, Ariz. He’s preparing for a coronal mass ejection that would knock out the entire electrical grid and send civilization “back to the Stone Age.” They have 1,000 tilapia fish in their swimming pool, eight chickens in their backyard, two pygmy goats to get themselves ready.

Might be able to survive for a while, but with all controls, motors, generators fried, all the nuke plants will cease core cooling and rapidly melt down their cores, leaving overlapping uninhabitable areas all over the US, so those of us that survive get to die of radiation poisoning. Give me social unrest and financial collapse any day of the week compared to that!

Posted on January 28, 2012 at 5:29pmFact our own military is already planing to take over most large city’s in the US, case in point the military just ran a BIG exerciser in LA, they said it was to get the troops ready to deploy overseas, that’s a load of crap. Our military has small towns build on military bases to practice warfare in a city setting they don’t need to shut down part of LA to train. What they are doing is getting an idea of what major points they need to take over when the world crashes to get control of that city. My son lives in Phoenix and he told me the military did the same thing there a few months back. The area they took over in Phoenix was close to a large rail yard so that way they can ship off all the trouble makers to the FEMA camps. I also spoke to a young man in the Marines and he told me that they have been training to mount up, get to an air base then deploy to ANY city in the US and take TOTAL control of it within 24 hours of getting the order to move out..First and foremost if you live in a big city and a war starts with Iran and the oil stops flowing that big city only has about a 3 day supply of food in it and when the oil stops, the trucks and trains stop, and so does the food so if your wise you will have a plan to get out before the military shows up, or you will be under their TOTAL CONTROL or worse yet they load you up into a rail car and pack you off to a FEMA camp,they will tell you it’s for your own good. If you love YOUR freedom you had better plan ahead

The world is not going to end anytime soon, but just look at the morons who were out of food and water during Katrina. They had a choice to have, say a months worth of food and water on hand, but they did nothing. Prepping is a prudent thing to do. Before you think it’s crazy, are you prepare if you lose your job. I’ll bet most have a mortgage or pay rent. You could be out on the street without income. Do you have an emergency fund? The idea is to be prepared for the bumps in the road we all go through, not the end of the world. Heck, the government runs PSA’s about having 3 months of preparations. Prepping is a big part of Glenn’s religion too. It’s just a wise thing to do.

Posted on January 28, 2012 at 7:24pmAnyone who understands the severity of what could happen is kidding themselves if they think they can survive with a month’s worth, or even a years worth of food and ammo. If the stuff hits the fan, everyone will need food and some kind of ammo. This alone indicates that we MUST have co-operatives functioning and using a barter system of some sort. Some effort should be directed to starting these kinds of organizations while things are still somewhat good. People must understand, if the electric grid goes – because our money system fails and no one can pay their bills; then gasoline/oil will also go. Think of the ramifications of just these events! No one will be able to pay for anything! Food supplies will disappear, transportation will stop, life as we know it will come to an immediate end. Within one generation, skills required to build, maintain and run equipment for ANY product will be lost. We will be forced to literally return to the stone age! How can we keep this from happening without forming huge co-operatives where we at least have the basics of life available? Food and other necessities. Forget the internet, TV, Radio and any form of Technology; unless the co-operative has people educated in developing huge amounts of electricity, maintaining the current electric grid, etc., etc. in every area of life! Even then, communication with the rest of the world will be put back into the early 1900′s. All of this worry because we elected people who cannot balance a budg

If it isn’t the falling economy, it’s racial animosity that threatens to get more violent every day due to vicious black on white attacks and what amounts to a racial war in California between blacks and Hispanics.
Added to all that is this divisive culture which is no longer one culture, but a conglomeration of squabbling tribes, each one jockeying for power and dominance over the others for control of the country, which is almost identical…but on a far larger scale…..to Bosnia.
And if all of that weren’t enough, we have an economy that is teetering on a full scale depression that the bureaucrats think they can turn around by lying about it so everyone will spend more, not understanding that people who are already spending what they have can’t spend more.
Taking all this into consideration, I’m wondering how on earth the leftist dregs at Natgeo can even begin to justify marginalizing sensible people preparing for hard times as being a fringe group.
The only answer, of course, is that liberals….in addition to having other mental disorders….are delusional.

Don’t believe me that they want to control your life, look at the people now on section 8, food stamps, Social security, Medicare, medicate, cash assistance, public housing, WIC and any other government dependency program. We just keep adding more and more programs because the more people that are taking from the system will vote for the people trying to grow the system. Ah, POWER what a rush! We all know how to hunt with guns or bows and so when the sh@t hits the fan we are ready only ourfamily knows about it under ground in the side of a mountain great cover only one way in or out.Call us crazy but we are ready for anything. I guess it helps being half Indian we were tough to live of the land, cant wait to see how the Libs do poor dumb a@@ fools….They cant take whats not there.

With globalization and emerging countries, we Americans will find ourselves leveling down to their level in “fairness” (and believe me, Obama’s sense of equal outcome and fair shot is for more than just inside the US).
I’m a prepper and proud of it. My sun oven is out there cooking as I write this, and why not? I use all stored foods as regular cooking ingredients, and I consider food storage the new “gold”. Food prices went up something like 5-6% last year and it’s a big part of the budget. If a #10 can of chicken will last 25 years, imagine how inflation will be over those years…especially if Beck’s predictions come true. Buy bulk produce cheap at farms and dehydrate it for use over the next year. I also enjoy grinding wheat, baking bread, etc. It’s kind of fun and the food quality is oh-so-much better. I also enjoy the smell of sheets/towels being dried on racks in the Phx sun.

I can stomach the tongue-in-cheek mockery and condescending attitude the media puts on preppers. WHY? Because I imagine it’s the same sneering that Noah endured as he built his ark.

They are self sufficient and don’t want to be a burden to anyone when SHTF. That’s not acceptable to Homeland Security. When SHTF, these preppers will be the first target that Air Force drones will target in their hideaways. Our government considers these preppers as public enemy #1. Our government tries to demonize them by portraying them as “racists” which is a lie, but is suppose to give the go ahead to kill them as a result. Americans won’t care if our government starts killing “racists white folks.“ It used to be even if you were a ”racist” that was your right, but now you can be considered a “terrorist” and now ripe for hit squads by the government. Remember, most of our soldiers, cops and firemen are good citizens. It is not like they are robots to oppress citizens. I believe I’ll be outta here before it gets to the point where I would need an underground bunker to survive anyway. And even if I am wrong, it won’t really matter anyway at that point. But I’m not wrong!

Real combat isn’t anything like they think. There’s only about one in 6 or 7 soldiers that are actually good soldiers. How much combat training do they have? It won’t be like shooting zombies. Do you have night vision goggles? The military owns the night. You will not have jackbooted cops knocking on your door at lunch time. Think 3AM. You may be able to defend yourself against some homeless guy, but professional forces plan their missions. And, where will you be when you need all the stuff you stashed away at home? It’s good to be prepared for a limited disaster, but to start a grocery store or armory, thinking you‘ll be king of the hill isn’t the reality. The only way to be saved is for this country to return to God. Only He can save us from ourselves. To think we can save ourselves from destruction is foolishness at it’s worst.

Posted on January 28, 2012 at 8:04pmA CB radio is ok, but it’s range is limited, a HAM radio is much better. You will need an FCC license to talk, but that is easy now, just have to pass a simple written test and pay a few bucks. They dropped the morse code requirement. :)
Also get a good shortwave radio. You’ll be able to listen to news and other stuff from all over the world. Just use an alligator clip with a long wire clipped to you antenna to pick up a whole lot more.

How many people are prepared to deal with something like that? There was a show on one of the Learning Channel type channels talking about the Madras fault in the Mid-West that had a huge earthquake in the early 1800′s. They said that should that happen today in addition to the extremely large loss of life, it could take as much as 6 months to restore basic services such as power, food, gas, and other basic necessities. How would people cope with that? How many people have enough food available?

I live in an upper middle class neighborhood in an upper middle class county and am friends with a lot of people with a comfortable amount of money. I can say with certainty that there is not a shortage of preppers as you pointed out.
What I find interesting though is that it’s the conservatives we know who are taking precautions and the liberals we know are not. Has anyone else noticed this? And preppers are in all age brackets too. I think a lot more people are preparing for tough times than any of us know. But very few discuss it for fear of being called loony.

Whether the SHTF this year or in 5…it is going to happen. The US cannot sustain its growing population of leeches and parasites. When they all get told “Sorry, we are broke and you’re getting no more food stamps, unemployment, disability or social security”…what do you think these people are going to do? Do you think they will suddenly see the light and get jobs? Get rid of their cell phones, big screen TV’s, 3rd and 4th car? Do you think they will move 20+ people into a 2 bedroom apartment to share expenses? Become swap meet millionaires? Extreme couponeers?
Uh, no…the vast majority of the US will look like Detroit & Flint do…gutted homes ripped off of anything they could rip out and sell. Nightly arson city wide. Police taking 3 hours to arrive.
The most positive outlook is ONLY severe inflation where a loaf of bread costs $10.00…so whether or not we are looking at “The Road” or “The Book of Eli” or even “Zombieland”…there is no reason not to stock up now as a hedge against rising prices.
Let’s face it…the only way things are going to get “better” is by the government lieing through its teeth, spending more than ever before, hiding the debt…and kicking the can down the road.

If you live anywhere near the mexican border, a barrios, a ghetto, a gang infested territory…again, what do you think these people are going to do when their stomachs start growling? They have no money…grocery stores will be wiped out or too expensive. They are going to start rioting and when they realize they can’t eat Air Jordans, TVs, suits, jewelry or liquor…they’ll start looking for “nice” neighborhoods to rob from…home invasions will be the norm. And with the police so overworked…the threat of being caught and put in prison will be a joke, removing the last inhibition they might have in stopping them from wholesale rape/murder/assault.
I’m looking to move to Utah/Nevada/Colorado and be off the beaten path with a 1 state buffer between me and the border.
I’d say Texas in a heartbeat…but they are going to become the playground of the drug cartels when the SHTF.

Report Post »Look for foods in bulk like Lentils, smaller beans, pastas, rolled oats, rice…They’re all relatively inexpensive, especially if purchased in 25+ lb bags. My wife and I reduce those into 1 gallon freezer bags then put them in 5 or 6 gallon buckets sealed with ‘Gammo’ lids (make a variety in each bucket. Most of these when in cool environment and sealed will last for, at least, a decade or two. We have several 5 gal buckets with coffee, tea, sugar, splenda all in one bucket variety. The nice things about lentils and split peas is that they cook quickly (use minimal heat to cook). These last a long time especially if you can keep them cool, not necessarily refrigerated but in a cool area of the house (remember that heat, even in a house rises!). Think about what you will be able to flavor those foods with. Make sure you have spices that you/your family like. Costco has many larger containers of spices like taco seasoning, lemon pepper, granulated garlic, different salts, etc.
If you look on http://www.costco.com then go to ‘emergency foods’ or ‘emergency’ and see what they have available, it’ll at least give you some ideas. Look at shelf life’s. Think about cooking or heating up water for same, what you would eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack. Buy a little any time you can. Costco.com ships for free with no tax. Pretty good.
You must imagine: No food in the stores starting today. What will you do? Be ready!! Start today!

In more peaceful times, perception is often a good substitute for reality. A few years back, I lived in an area that suffered from constant burglaries. The houses to my left and right were hit several times. My house wasn’t. It may be anecdotal, but I think it was because I had a sign on my main door with a picture of a handgun and words: “We don’t call 911!”

only 1 had a military survival expert young man who explained example ‘how to start a fire’ with a car battery and steel wool, etc. we wish we had DVR’ed it.
so far today, GBTV is the only voice of reason that is not ridiculing and insulting the intelligence of America as we Americans prepare for the obama-led civil war.

As for their reasons? That’s up to them. If we are to survive any major catastrophic situation, we will need many people like this… regardless of their initial reason for preparing, whether end-of-the world, or impending economic collapse.
