Check Out Texas’ New Grenade Launcher-Equipped Police Drone in Action

For the first time in the history of Texas, a local law enforcement agency will have a high tech drone with grenade-launching capabilities, night vision and infrared imaging at its disposal.Texass New Grenade Launcher Police Drone in Action

Last week the Blaze told you about the second drone heading to patrol the Texas border in support of federal operations. This time, though, a drone will be in the hands of local law enforcement. The Montgomery Sheriff’s office will have full operational control over its own Shadowhawk drone, marking a first for the Lone Star state.

The price tag on this little aerial beast? $250,000, much of it paid for  by the department of Homeland Security. The operating cost of the drone is approximately only 11% of that required for a helicopter crew. In addition, it can be airborne in minutes, and only takes five minutes to completely refuel.Texass New Grenade Launcher Police Drone in Action

The Shadowhawk drone is built by Vanguard Defense Industries. At 29 pounds and a length of 72 inches, its much smaller than the Predator and Reaper drones associated with military operations abroad, and can only fly for three hours at a time within a 25 mile radius.

But as a law enforcement tool, the Shadowhawk can easily operate in civilian airspace and maneuver in tight urban environments. It is fully controlled by remote operator, which puts no law enforcement personnel at risk.  Within its stated parameters, it appears it will be a highly effective crime-fighting tool.

Below is a video overview of the Shadowhawk, courtesy of KRIV-TV:

Right now Texas law enforcement authorities say its primary mission is assisting in “missing person” cases. While the Shadowhawk could certainly find a missing hiker or stranded motorist faster than a squad car, soon its mission set will also include a wide array of policing activities. As stated on the Vanguard website, the Shadowhawk can maintain continuous surveillance of a subject:

“at 700 feet without being heard or seen unlike full sized aircraft. Imagine the advantage provided to an entry team in the following scenarios; high risk warrant, hostage rescue, domestic violence.”

Most interesting of all are the grenade launcher and other projectile modifications for the Shadowhawk. Generally speaking, police drones have not been equipped with guns or launchers. Shadowhawk variants, however, include 40 mm grenade launchers and other lethal small arms payloads. These are set up for military application only, but the Shadowhawk’s grenade launch capability could be used for the deployment of CS gas canisters and other non-lethal ordnance during a crow control or raid scenario.

If the Shadowhawk proves itself during law enforcement missions, it could only be a matter of time before a lethal payload is introduced for drone use on U.S. soil. Police drone operators back in the station could then be making life or death decisions with the click of a button.

Here is a promotional video from Vanguard intended to show the Shadowhawk in action:

I hate to say this but people had better start to wake up to the fact that America is FAST BECOMING A POLICE STATE! This is just more proof to that fact, i mean what in the hell does a police Dept. NEED WITH military grade weapons.

Just remember its not that big of a leap for them to turn those weapons on American citizens. Just in case you have been asleep the past few weeks we now have the TSA setting up ROAD BLOCKS on our highways and we now have the border patrol setting up road blocks over 100 miles from the border stopping people ALREADY INSIDE our country wanting to know if they are citizens.

Next we have our U S Air Force doing a police style raid on a business in Las Vegas, last time i checked only the police can service a search warrant on a private citizen, so what the hell is going on with the U S Air Force acting like the police?

Times are a changing people and not for the better when it comes to OUR FREEDOMS!

This is the difference between Beck and Alex Jones.

Alex Jones does the same story first, and presents it as exactly what it is, the extension of Skynet, and a police state intrusion.

The Blaze presents sloppy seconds like “Look at the New Police Drone in Action! Wooohoo! Isn’t it great? Don’t ya want one? Don’t you want one hovering outside your window in US Airspace jurisdiction taking thermal images like they did the OWS protestors? Love your police state. Embrace your police state. It’s cool. And it can tase multiple suspects in a crowd…like those pesky OWS protestors!”

The story dodges around the obvious privacy concerns and militarization of police concerns.

I am taking it for granted that you don’t live in Texas. If you were a rancher on the border you would appreciate them. If you were a mother in central Texas you would appreciate them. The gangs the drug trafficking and use, the Mexican cartels. The recruitment and brainwashing of our children especially of our Hispanic children into said cartels. Getting them addicted and reeling them in before we know what is happening. The murders, rapes, and burglaries have sky rocketed in the last twenty years until I don’t even recognize my home state anymore. I for one am glad to have them in Texas. In my opinion the only ones that need to worry are the ones that causes the need for such a drastic measure. Sadly criminals have forced them into this.

Charlen, My problem is WHY DOES LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT NEED MILITARY GRADE WEAPONS. As i said in my first post we as Americans are losing our freedoms daily, i have lived in the southwest for over the past 45 years and alot of that time was spent within 50 miles of the border but now i find myself being stopped ON MY SIDE OF THE BORDER having to prove to border patrol that i am a citizen of this country.

Never before have i had to prove that i am a citizen of this country while already being inside my country so my question is were is this going to stop, IT’S NOT! What they are doing is getting Americans use to this type of treatment so they can take the next step and you already see it with the growth of the TSA setting up road blocks on interstate highways stopping Americans wanting you to prove your a citizen.

Next you will see the TSA checking people as they go into a NFL football game. What this is, is the first steps to the start of total surveillance of each and every American. Now if you think i am crazy just look at what’s happened in England, they as a people have LOST ALL OF THEIR FREEDOMS under the guise of protecting them, they have more video cameras in England watching their citizens then China does.

The same system that has been set up in England is now being set up in this country, our government says it’s needed to protect us, i say it‘s needed to protect the governments OWN LUST FOR POWER TO CONTROL IT’S OWN CITIZENS, this will kill our Rep

It’s called … PROGRESSIVISM ! First set up the structure (get “harmless” attack drones into the field), then add the lethal modifications (explosive missiles) when the Police State is fully in force.

The border reference was toward a different story about a drone actually headed to the border. No where did they insinuate that the drone in this story was for use on the border.

This one is to help with “missing persons cases”, which makes me wonder how many persons go missing in this county and exactly how they think the grenade launcher will assist with that mission.

Hey Colt, hold on there Cochise – here‘s why it’s needed. Because the feds won’t secure the border, local sheriffs are having to take on highly armed paramilitary cartel units. Hell we need pill boxes and mobile artillary along many sections of the Rio Grande. Could this “toy” be used against Texans? Maybe. But it sure would be stupid. Here are over 60,000 registered long gun owners in El Paso County alone, many more if you add sidearms – the police here can’t take on the populace. hell even the military couldn’t succeed on a sustained basis – Afghanistan would look like patty cakes. So relax and let us have some firepower toys to use against these Escobar mofos.

It’s a nifty little weapon, but from what I can determine so far it can be downed by a hunting rifle or assault rifle, if it ventures into an area where it can be seen.

Another article I read on it said that the total cost was 500,000 dollars and Homeland Security paid half.

It would be quite a large amount of money to lose if someone picked it off while it was performing one of its tasks.

I remember when it was a big deal for police cars to carry shotguns. Now the cops have gunships?(note- just because it does not have a crew on board does not mean it isn’t a gun ship. The defining characteristic of a gun ship is the presence of GUNS.)

Why in the hell would a local police force need a grenade launcher? Want to see collateral damage? Fire that thing in a city. The Shadowhawk’s grenade launcher fires standard 40mm HEDP rounds. I have fired my share of these as an M203 grenadier during the Southeast Asia war games. Those of you who have never seen the results don’t want to know what they can do. This is a weapon of war, not law enforcement, and the local police do not have war powers. The only people they could make war against would be the citizens of this country.

When will your local cop shop get Predator drones?

One screen lays flat and one at a slight angle so as to cover the holes in the first about 33 percent. Then line all your clothing with aluminum foil. Just use old clothes and contact cement the foil inside. (Also defeats Tasers).

At a tremendously smaller operating costs than that of a conventional helicopter performing surveillance, a tool such as this would be used much more frequently for surveillance. This increase is dangerous in relation to Liberty. So while the cost of the conventional created a natural stop gap for Liberty, this removes much of that gap and is problematic at best.

So I ask myself would I live my life with a greater or lessor sense of living in a free society with this tool in my area. The answer is less. Much, much less.

I saw a helicopter copy of Airwolf (80′s tv show) that was jet powered had a working “rocket pod” like in the old tv show but it fires .22 caliber rounds!! If anything this is a great example of how spending needs to be cut. This is frivolous spending. I have no problem with a machine like this but lets get it at a reasonable price! We dont need to cut defense just the absurd pricing for things we know dont cost as much as we are being told!!! My Airwolf example above I think this JET POWERED helicopter with a firing .22 caliber “rocket pod” was built for under $20,000 NOT $250k!

I get you are concerned that a quarter million dollar aircraft should be valued much less but consider this. 250,000 dollars buys you a surveillance system vs. a police helicopter costing up to 8 million. Now consider the cost of the crews to fly and man the helicopter, and then the cost of airplane fuel. The drone costs 11% of the price tag to operate a helicopter. There are plenty of concerns to be had here but cost is not one of them.

Its amazing what you can pack into a grenade-like shell. Everything from tazer nets to tear gas. It is also hard to tear gas into a skyscrapper.

Yeah it kills me Montgomery County Md is one of the ten richest counties in the US of course they have crime but not say like Baltimore or Prince Georges county Md. Seems a little overkill but they do have the funds to pay for it I guess.

The dirty little secret about America is that we have very poor “defense” capabilities. Our best defense is fighting people that are far away. If a cartel or terrorist govt. staged an attack on our soil using heavy machine guns, mortars and RPG’s; we would be incapable of defending ourselves for probably 12 to 24 hours. We have laws against military action within our own borders. By the time a National Guard unit got organized enough to do something about it, the dead would be stacked like cord wood.
