Check Out the Amazing Book Sculptures Meant to Show ‘Erosion of Cultures’

Guy Laramee has chosen an unusual medium for his sculpting. Laramee sculpts intricate landscapes in books, which when you consider his artist’s statement that “ultimate knowledge could very well be an erosion instead of an accumulation” is a fitting material choice.

Artists Sculpts Miniature World and Landscapes From Books

GeekOSystem describes Laramee’s work as a “better way to destroy a book than burning it”:

Generally imitating some type of landscape, each piece is extremely detailed, and mighty impressive, not only showing off intricate terrain, but employing lighting effects from outside sources.

Laramee says on his website that he has been practicing for 30 years. In his biography, it states that his work began appearing in galleries around 2004, but as of 2011 he had 15 solo and 20 collective shows of his art. Laramee says in his artist’s statement that the theme of his work for the past 25 years has been “the erosion of cultures – and of ‘cultures’ as a whole”, which hopes will  “project us into this thick Cloud of Unknowing.”

I don’t usually like alternative art. It often lacks a key ingredient–artistic talent. However these sculptures are unique and very beautiful. Like JQCITIZEN, I would buy this art!

P.S. That said, books seem like precious things to me. So I’d have trouble actually carving into one myself.

Apparently you missed the whole point of the article, seeping from the seams of knowledge, you are eroding away to nothingness. Ironically, the state of mind the artist is point towards. Knowledge is the evil of mankind, it will be our end. Just as Eve partook of the Tree of Knowledge,to be as God, know good from bad. So smart you are to point out the error of another man, so rich is denial that forbids your own conscious from your unconscious… Do yourself a favor, read first the 4 Agreements, the read A New Earth… Maybe then you can live your life freely and peacefully.

I guess the Blaze Editor had the day off today; even in the headline “sculptures” is spelled “sculputres”! Oh, sorry, maybe they were in the “no child left behind” program…

Apparently everyone at The Blaze had the day off; it appears that all or almost all the stories today are by Ms. Klimas. Some bad proofreading mistakes it’s true, but let’s give her a bye for Christmas. At least she was putting some content up!

No! Not ‘Sculputres’—spell check! An editor, a second glance of your copy/paste by a peer, anything. The lowest of the low.

The Blaze and Fox are really bad at spelling. Watch the banner on the screen bottom on Fox news, lots of misspelled words.

@America4Ever – the banner on the bottom of Fox often abbreviates words intentionally. Is that your gripe? The banner is real-time so as to get breaking news out ASAP. As such, it does not go through the rigors of the editorial process, at least that is my perception. (Yes, I know the same news scrolls over and over, so it ceases to be real-time at some point. But, at the time it is posted, it is often real-time.)

I agree I’d like to see TheBlaze.com be more “professional” in its content, in the way of grammar and spelling. I suspect they are doing this on a tight budget and using new / young talent (inexperienced talent).

I’m cutting some slack due to Christmas!

There should be an option to comment on spelling, typos & grammar (where the comment goes right to the author of the piece). I know that it really irks some commenters to see “spelling Nazi” comments but it really irks me to see blatant errors . . . . Obama for example.

Toothpicks are one thing but one of those books is approaching the rare state. Water & Land by Jacob Abbot was last printed in the 1870s.

Not quite sure exactly what he is trying to say; – And I don’t know if that is because his Philosophy is confused, or he doesn’t express it well, or if the Blaze author expressed it poorly.

Knowledge is great, as long as it begins with “the Fear of the Lord”. Next best choice would be knowledge that builds upon the benefit of others’ mistakes and avoiding them, even without the such a fear, (or reverence, which is what the phrase REALLY means).

Either way, I think books and the written record are a VALUABLE TOOL for LEARNING FROM CULTURES PAST, so I think ALL book burning, (perhaps with the exception of Pornography) is a mistake. We need to see where human nature has taken us, good and bad,, to benefit from the human experience.

Interesting art and philosophy–I, too, believe education, and being educated, is about the death of absolutism, itself not an absolute because we cannot KNOW absolutism isn’t the case–yet we have no grounds on which to conclude it is LIKELY the case, or even any evidence, other than our own intuitions which can suggest any manner of things, true and false to us, to presuppose absolutism is anything more than a useful fiction.

It’s opposite, nihilism, is also, really not confirmed by experience, yet an undeniable, if not particularly useful, possibility.

The middle way, relativism, seems to be the order of existence–no thing exists without connection; all are wrapped in a web of interconnection, with relations, deterministic and non-deterministic, of dependency/conditionality.

There is no pure vacuum–indeed the idea itself seems to house an internal contradiction that has been explored by philosophy and mathematics alike.

No absolutism? Then explain how this statement can be falsified:

“Something either is, or it is not.”

Personally, I think it is the vanity of man that makes us search for some escape from the FACT that there ARE absolutes in this world. That is what the concurrent thought “I think, therefore I am” is all about.
