Check Out the NYPD’s New Terrorism-Fighting Helicopter

The New York Police Department is getting another tool for it’s counter-terrorism efforts that costs about $9.8 million — not including the $4 million of high-tech sensitive equipment it carries.
The local CBS affiliate in New York not only got a look at the 7,000-pound Bell 412EP — callsign Aviation 22 — but took a ride.
Speaking with a few NYPD officials, CBS 2 found out that the helicopter can travel up to 150 mph and has a sensor system sensitive enough to detect radiation up to 200 feet high. The New York Daily News reports that the chopper joins two others like it on the NYPD fleet.

“We’re looking at the critical infrastructure of New York City, the symbolic buildings. Is there anything out of place, anything suspicious? Anything that we didn’t see the day before that now has changed and will require investigation?” Capt. James Coan of the NYPD’s Aviation Division said to CBS.
CBS asked what would be considered suspicious. NYPD Det. Bill Paugh said the department will monitor pipelines, look for things like small boats that seem out of place, and anything else that just looks unusual.

Although the helicopter can be used to monitor a variety of situations, it will especially be focused on the ports with its radiation-detection systems trying to sense any nuclear bomb that could be being brought in.
