Check This List of Popular Passwords: If Yours Is on it, Consider Changing

Most people know that “password” or “[insert your last name]1234″ aren’t the best choices for passwords, but how many of you have exactly that for the slew of sites that require you to register a username and password?

According to SplashData’s annual list of worst Internet passwords of the year, “password” is ranked #1.

Mashable has more on the list, which SplashData creates from stolen passwords posted online by hackers:

The list is somewhat predictable: Sequences of adjacent numbers or letters on the keyboard, such as “qwerty” and “123456,” and popular names, such as “ashley” and “michael,” all are common choices. Other common choices, such as “monkey” and “shadow,” are harder to explain.

Here’s the full list in ranking order:

1. password
2. 123456
3.12345678
4. qwerty
5. abc123
6. monkey
7. 1234567
8. letmein
9. trustno1
10. dragon
11. baseball
12. 111111
13. iloveyou
14. master
15. sunshine
16. ashley
17. bailey
18. passw0rd
19. shadow
20. 123123
21. 654321
22. superman
23. qazwsx
24. michael
25. football

What should you do if your password is on this list? Experts say: Change it now. Mashable reports SplashData CEO Morgan Slain as saying hackers will try to break into accounts first by using common passwords. “Even though people are encouraged to select secure, strong passwords, many people continue to choose weak, easy-to-guess ones, placing themselves at risk from fraud and identity theft,” Slain said.

Gizmodo reports that the list is fairly similar to previous years, so the common passwords hackers try haven’t changed that much.

Back in 2005 I worked for a IT company that managed about 150 Servers remotely. The Terminal Service remote Administrator password for every Server was MASTER. I about died when they told me. I had a very, very hard time not cracking up. When I asked them how long the password has been like this and if they planned on changing it they said, “About 5 years but, we haven‘t had any real issues and it’s so easy to remember and to type.” I asked HR how many techs had left in the last 5 years? She just said there was a lot. So much for security.

I really like the one’s who say, “My password is password but, I spell it Pa$$w0rd and no one could possible guess that!” ROTFLMAO!!!

AT&T took my password out and sent me an email to tell me this. Now with my password gone, I couldn’t access my email so I had no idea they had done this. In my conversation with the rep trying to correct the problem, she said someone that knew my password had changed it. I told her nobody knew my password or had access to my computer. She insisted that someone had to have. I told her I did not think either of my two doglets would do that. After I got the mess straightened out and accessed my email, I found out yep…someone that knew my password had changed it. Stupid AT&T!! What a bunch of dipwads.

Thanks for the replies. I am suspicious that someone tried to hack into the Blaze. Yesterday I saw someone post a php link saying it was free software that allows someone to copy video clips. I also see a link on this page from Melissa85 which has a link. Be careful about going to links that people post. This is how hackers get into systems, they start with hacking someone’s account and then on in from there also is how virus is spread. I’ve seen this done on FB allot. I deactivated my FB account. Best to not click on any links that looks suspicious and don’t end with .com .net or .org!

That’s actually a very good password. The best passwords are ones that contain words meaningful to you (as to be easy to remember for you) but random enough to be difficult to guess. Numbers needn’t even be part of them The webcomic XKCD did a very good strip about this very issue: http://xkcd.com/936/
