Cheney Book: Bush Personally Authorized a Leak About Iraq Strategy

Cheney Book: Bush Personally Authorized a Leak About Iraq Strategy

POLITICO has reported this afternoon that in Dick Cheney’s upcoming book “In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir,” the former vice president reveals that he was surprised to learn that President George W. Bush had personally authorized a leak about Iraq strategy to a Washington Post columnist:

“I was very concerned when I read the piece, and I raised it with the president in the Oval Office. ‘Whoever is leaking information like this to the press is doing a real disservice, Mr. President,’ I said, ‘both to you and to our forces on the ground in Baghdad.’ … ‘We have to correct this, particularly with our generals in the field.’ …

A short time later [national security adviser] Steve Hadley came into my office and closed the door. He told me that he was the source for Ignatius and that he’d talked to him at the instruction of the president.”

The leak was used in Washington Post Columnist David Ignatius’ May 22, 2007 article “After the Surge: The Administration Floats Ideas for a New Approach in Iraq.” The column quoted administration officials on the need to revamp policy in order to attract bipartisan support and to take into account the fact that the surge might not have the stabilizing effect that the administration had hoped.

Other interesting revelations in Cheney‘s book include the telling of a tearful apology from Condoleezza Rice in Cheney’s office in 2003, Cheney choosing to go against the White House communications team in 2006 by encouraging the president to not fear speaking of “victory” in Iraq, and a November 2008 meeting with past White House chiefs of staff where Cheney made an offhand comment to Rahm Emanuel.

I am sick of the lies from the left. First, I distinctly remember Hillary Clinton and other commies supporting the invasion of Iraq based on the available intelligence. It was only when the WMDs didn’t show up that they changed their tune and accused the Bush administration of lying about the WMDs. Secondly on an episode of Sean Hannity, an Iraqi who was one of Hussein’s right hand generals stated that the WMDs were shipped to Syria by air and over land just prior to the invasion. He also stated that Hussein wanted to attack Israel by air but was talked out of it. That the Israelis would deploy their airforce before Hussein’s was able to attack and that the resulting battle would be over Syria. I believe the general’s name was Syed and he was on Hannity to promote his book. Another episode of Hannity reported that 500 severely degraded WMDs were discovered by American troops. Apparently WMDs require regular maintenance to keep them from degrading. This was not reported anywhere else to my knowledge. The left just kept repeating their mantra that Bush lied and there are no WMDs. Bush did not lie and the WMDs were there.

      You are 100% correct …
In 1998, many leading Democrats (Both Clintons, Pelosi, Dean, Reid, Berger, Albright) claimed that Saddam possessed WMDs and would use them. Now for the Liberals that don’t know how to add, that’s (2) years before Bush was to become President.
The United States Marines found collapsed tunnels that led into Syria at the Iraq Border.

      Loopholes like tax depreciation schedules?

If you don’t like depreciation as a tax write off, then say so. If you don’t like accelerated depreciation then say so. Say that all business should have the exact same depreciation schedule for all capital equipment purchases regardless of industry.

@ JZS – What amazes me isn’t that Bush had a strategy in Iraq, but that you liberals and progressives bashed him to pieces while the liberal media painted him a a tyrant and war monger but Bush was quite the progressive in his second term. The Bush’s have been progressives ever since their great grand daddy first recovered 3/4 million dollars from frozen funds found to be supporting the Nazi regime. He then embarked on a plan inspired by no other than Margret Sanger, to study eugenics. Progressivism has been part of the Bush family for a very long time.
Surprised you have such hard feelings for a man who pushed for amnesty programs, implemented the no child left behind program, and chose to push for bail outs of the industry’s. Then again, you Intellects are so superior in your intelligence, you could see that all those multiple ploys by the Bush administration was to implement progressive policy’s to trick you. Your liberal sources told you all along, Bush was a starch conservative. Don’t feel bad though, you are not alone. A great number of conservatives believed the media as well and supported Bush as a result. The Bush’s have always enjoyed the idea of a NWO. This should appeal to you lib‘s who are all out supporters for the UN policy’s. You should have enjoyed the days while they lasted JZS, because they will only be a note of the past come 2012. Americans had enough of your foolish irresponsible and anti-American sovereignty policy’s. Sorry bro !

You are correct. We gave Hussein like 6 months notice before we attacked. In the months before the invasion there were multiple news reports of truck convoys crossing the Syrian border. I also remember seeing the reports about the mustard gas shells that were found. Yet the libs keep screaming about no WMD‘s and a lot of conservatives started questioning the fact that there were WMD’s once Bush showed his true progressive colors as well. He was right to go in but the manner in which this war has been fought (not to mention every “war” since the Geneva Convention Treaties) is foolish. The purpose of a military is to kill people and break things, NOT clean up messes. We should have turned that place into a glass parking lot with no advanced warning, went in and looked for the WMD‘s then left the remaining Iraqi’s to clean up the mess.

      The goals of the
CFR is best described by its very own members. Bill Clinton’s
Georgetown mentor and CFR member Carroll Quigley states: “The
Council on Foreign Relations is the American branch of a society
which originated in England… (and) …believes national boundaries
should be obliterated and one world rule established.”. Quigley
differs from many of his CFR colleagues in that he believes their
plan for a new world order should be more publicly disclosed. In his
book Tragedy and Hope, Quigley concedes he is unique among his peers
in that he believes the new world order plan of global government’s
“role in history is significant enough to be known”. Quigley
also admits that the two-party system allows for both groups to be
controlled at the highest level but operate like bitter rivals. As
Quigley says, this gives the voters the chance to “throw the
rascals out at any election without leading to any profound of
extreme shifts in policy.”. Controlling Washington elite allowed
private central banks to “dominate the political system… …and
economy of world as a whole” and implement a new system of
“feudalist fashion” through “secret agreements”. Although he
believes the CFR’s intentions should be more public, Quigley
understands the average person doesn’t understand feudalism or
serfdom and will never read his book.
      Surprisingly, many
of its own members admit the CFR goal is to subvert the democratic
      process… http://w

Even Obama is using Halliburton (no bids) because they are the only Company capable of doing the work our Country needs. There isn’t another American company who can do the work Halliburton has the experience or manpower to do. This company is all over the world, and I’ve had many friends who worked for them.
If you have a problem with their fees, why don‘t you start first investigating this country’s buying system where they pay hundreds of dollars for items that can be bought for $5 at the local hardware store? We’ve all heard about the $500 hammer because an American company had an inside to make a bunch and prob. shared it with the gov’t buyer. Sound familiar?

One of Sadam’s nuclear scientists, wrote a book: The Bomb in my Garden, informing that nuclear materials were being stored in the homes of the scientists to thwart the UN inspectors.

Between “he and Lieberman” should be “between him and Lieberman.” Sorry for the distraction comment but I am so PO’d that American schools no longer teach grammar rules. Even the president screws up his Nominative/Objective Case pronouns which means that his teleprompter writers also never learned proper grammar. All started in the 1960′s when all “rules” became verboten and “feel good” came into the curriculum. Amazing to me that a Harvard graduate does not know correct English grammar. I miss rules and order and shame. The world was much more polite, peaceful and livable then.

Refudiate Obama 2012: Good point: The Alsinsky Rule #13: “Identify, isolate, freeze and escalate” pretty much sums up the way the Left has attacked every potential Republican candidate. If you ever read the New York Times, which is the penultimate Left wing/ elitist propaganda machine you will see that technique in action: they “identify” the candidate/topic and then their followers use the comment sections to do the “isolate/freeze/escalate/demonize/repeat” part. These are the folks who gave us the “stolen elections” and the “phony intelligence” rhetoric that they have repeated so often in comments that they now believe it to be true. Sort of political “urban legends.“ Showing the power of the Left media and why Soros poured his BIg Bucks into ”media groups” this election time ! The NYT is also part of the attempt of the Left to shut- down Fox News with their repeated articles/comments regarding the Murdoch-phone hacking “allegations” in Britain.

@Barber2 I agree with you on grammar and the rest. However, in your sentence: “If you ever read the New York Times, which is the penultimate Left wing/ elitist propaganda machine you will see that …..”, you should have used the word ‘ultimate’ as penultimate means next to last. There is grammar and then there is vocabulary.

      > VIET VET. Thanks for your service (from a retired Army Senior NCO. post Vietnam). Sometimes it’s hard to differentiate between a Liberal and Libertarian. Except for a few good Conservative views and ideas, they pretty much reside on the far right fringe AND the far left in terms of lunacy. The terms that best describes them in my opinion is… Neo-Liberal or Quasi-Conservatives.

I’m glad to see you have an eye for their BS.

They claim that many, many in the Military share their views and principles and would vote for Ron Paul in aminute. Some of their views when looked at on the surface are appealing, but it’s like that Libertarian quiz that floats about… fraudulant.

The Libertarian stands right next to, and sometimes with Code Pink (many attend their protests) in their hatred of the Military. They will tell America it’s not the Military they hate (the average soldier), but the Military Industrial complex, lol. Same BS as the Liberals would have Americans believe.

I’m glad you can identify them as for what they are.
