Cheney: Mubarak is a ‘Good Friend’

Cheney: Mubarak is a Good FriendSANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Former Vice President Dick Cheney on Saturday called Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak a good friend and U.S. ally, and he urged the Obama administration to move cautiously as turmoil continued to shake that nation’s government.

Cheney’s comments came a day after President Barack Obama pressed Mubarak to consider his legacy and exit office in a way that would give his country the best chance for peace and democracy.

Cheney said the U.S. should take measured steps in public, and suggested that too much pressure could backfire.

“There is a reason why a lot of diplomacy is conducted in secret. There are good reasons for there to be confidentiality in some of those communications. And I think President Mubarak needs to be treated as he deserved over the years, because he has been a good friend,” Cheney said at an event commemorating the centennial of President Ronald Reagan’s birth.

Cheney noted it can be difficult for some foreign leaders to act on U.S. advice “in a visible way” without appearing compromised in their own countries.

“The bottom line is, in the end, whatever comes next in Egypt is going to be determined by the people of Egypt,” Cheney added.

Cheney, looking markedly thinner than during his days in Washington and sitting throughout his remarks, said Mubarak helped the U.S. get military aircraft into the region in the 1991 Gulf War, and committed troops to fight alongside U.S. forces in the liberation of Kuwait.

“He’s been a good man, a good friend and ally to the United States,” Cheney said. “We need to remember that.”

As huge protests continued Friday, Obama said discussions have begun in Egypt on a turnover of the government, and he called for a “transition period that begins now.”

“We want to see this moment of turmoil turned into a moment of opportunity,” Obama said in Washington. He did not explicitly call for Mubarak to step down immediately, but U.S. officials said the administration has made a judgment that Mubarak has to go soon if the crisis is to end peacefully.

Asked about a possible outcome in Egypt, Cheney said, “I don’t know.”

“There comes a time for everybody when it’s time to hang it up and move on,” he said, but added, “That’s a decision only the Egyptians can make.”

Saturday‘s event was sponsored by the Young America’s Foundation, which was founded to promote conservative ideas on college campuses and purchased Reagan’s former ranch in 1998.

Sarah Palin addressed the group Friday.

Who thinks Residual Cheney isn’t still in some non-executive position at Halliburton pulling strings?

I have to disagree with Cheney on this one.

Mubarak WAS a good friend to the US at first. Murbarak’s first decade in power was positive. In the wake of Sadat’s assassination and the peace treaty with Israel, he held the country together and kept it peaceful. It could have easily been much different with his ascension to power occuring so close to the Iranian Revolution.

But the longer he was in power the more brutal and oppressive he became. Our relationship with him grew to be indicative of all our relationships with countries in the region: we supported whomever didn’t declare war on Israel with very little attention paid to Human Rights and the individuals under whatever draconian regime that held power. There is a problem there.

The arguement that is being made that “the US throws its ‘friends’ under the bus” isn’t without its merits. But in the case of Mubarak, what choice do we have? Continued support of his reign would only serve to further feed the impression that the US is duplicitous when it comes to basic human rights and a friend of tyrants.

Ultimatley, we haven’t turned our backs on Mubarak; the people of Eygpt have turned their backs on Mubarak and, in the chess game of international affairs, who are you going to stand with?

Our loyalties lay with the cause of freedom and self-determination and we should never compromise on those principles.

Your way off the mark here

The last thing Obama wants right now

Is another American Hostige situation like Carter

because it was the hostage situation that made Carter look weak
      and cost him re-election

So Obama is going to kiss who evers ass he has to kiss in order
to keep another Hostage situation from happening.

So the best way to cover Obamas masive ass kissing act.

      @cykonas

And these things will continue to happen. The world will never be stable.

Isolationism is not an option. If we don’t form alliances and exert only pro-freedom and pro-liberty influence then, trust you me, nobody else will and the results of that will be catastophic in the long and short run.

With Egypt we still have much sway and influence with its military. And despite all the musings of the Muslim Brotherhood having the most power in the current situation (which they do have a great deal and they are worrisome), it is simply not true. The United States has the most influence because it supports and finances the military. Whatever the Egyptian military decides will largely determine the outcome of this “revolution”. And we are well positioned to, shall I say, nudge Egypt into a more amiable international and regional disposition.

Of course this could all back-fire and the Egyptian military could easily become seen as a proxy of the “evil” United States (you better believe thats what the MB will say if they realise events are not going in their favor) so it’s best that we lay low and side with the populace.

The results of Egypt will have rammifications that will determine the future in so many ways. This is not a matter to ignore.

What price should we pay to stave off the war that will eventually come. We can’t control the political scene here any better than Lebanon or Gaza. I say let them have their way and then be ready to put them down when the time comes. We Americans do not want war with anybody but I don’t think it is a good idea to prop up a dictator just to have a few more years of calm. The people there will suffer under that kind of rule. And are we really ok with that as long as we have a little more false peace? A good man asks for no conflict nor does he promote one. We should not stave off a war by allowing a group of people to become slaves. In the end this is their fight and our place to deal with it if they fail to make it right. Man will always have conflict and war. Be prepared for when they raise their swords. You raise your fully automatic guns. Better technology and better trained warriors are what we need not better diplomacy. Respect an enemy with the appropriate overwhelming response on a battlefield. Make them understand that you can get rid of them at any time but do not want too as long as they remain a friend.

While I‘d agree that the Muslim Brotherhood is not our ’friend’, it is also true that America has taken its own bait.

That being that all nations must be the same and do as we say. The fact of the matter is that we aren’t all the same and we can never be. That is the fallacy of the democratic political structure we now have constructed in our popular conceptualization of what government “is”.

Cheney is right. There are many reasons why we conduct diplomacy behind closed doors. And those reasons include the fact that we are different in many ways. Requiring give and take, dodge and parry, jab and hook, compromise and agreement. Being ignorant or just being belligerent won’t change these facts. I‘d agree that we don’t all like it, but that is the way of the world we live in. Denial ain’t a river in Egypt.

Socialist liberal types believe that everyone should kneel at their alter of ideology while denying that same belief to everyone else. Without diplomacy we become the “dictator”. It doesn’t matter that for decades we have virtually bought our way around the middle east. Actually, that started more than a hundred years ago by the UK and big money banking and that trend has been there ever since.

Where we have left the field of play is by not holding to morality and ethical dealings. Not that the other side does. But we have dug a hole for ourselves and now we have lost our standing.

Sorry Cheney–you are wrong on this one. STOP ANNOUNCING TO THE WORLD this man is a “friend”. And the Muslim Brotherhood is NOT the way to go either. All we are going to see is a change of hands from a tyrant to a super-oppresser.

As soon as I saw the headline “Cheney says Mubarak is a ‘good friend’ “, I knew there was trouble. First off Hosni Mubarak is a dictator short and simple. And no wonder the egyptians hates us. WE were the ones who helped FUND him and GIVE him MONEY for HIS campaign. And now our friend Dick Cheney is saying he is america’s good friend? What is wrong with you Cheney? Mubarak’s Regime is what killed all those people who were saying, and writing the truth. My great hope is that this will end soon , and, with good results.

Mubarak, has sided with the US on policy in the region because he gets lots of aid from us. He is a harsh dictator and so is Iran a brutal theocracy. Where is the outrage for that regime. We need to stop nation building that’s for sure. However, it is irresponsible to demand Mubarak immediate ouster because that would bring to the region more instability and way more blood. Of course, the left does not care about human life they demonstrate that every day. Their campaign to stop DDT spraying in Africa has cause a resurgence of malaria killing million of children every year but I hear no outrage there from the left. Many farms in California have gone broke because you wanted to save a little fish and turned off their water– So let them grow weed. Everything you guys touch turns to misery and suffering and you want to take high moral road on us.

You on the left are nothing short of intellectual morons with little consciences or moral responsibility. You don’t care who dies or what blood is shed as long as you achieve your party goals.

Posts with links proofing the story between fox, the brotherhood and rupert are deleted before you can even see them… I think that proofs a point.

We know why Obama said what he did, and not be diplomatic.. He’s an Islamist himself, but feels he is elite enough to be in the NWO….Wonder who is using who?..Either way they want the USA out of the way. ‘You shall know them by their actions”.
