Chicago Cardinal Francis George: If Contraception Mandate Stands, All Catholic Hospitals Will Close ‘Two Lents From Now’

The Obama administration’s contraception mandate may be motivated by saving lives, but according to one cardinal, it is likely to lead to heavy casualties in another respect. In a column posted at Catholic New World, Cardinal Francis George of Chicago weighs in with a dire warning:

The strangest accusation in this manipulated public discussion has the bishops not respecting the separation between church and state. The bishops would love to have the separation between church and state we thought we enjoyed just a few months ago, when we were free to run Catholic institutions in conformity with the demands of the Catholic faith, when the government couldn’t tell us which of our ministries are Catholic and which not, when the law protected rather than crushed conscience. The state is making itself into a church. The bishops didn’t begin this dismaying conflict nor choose its timing. We would love to have it ended as quickly as possible. It’s up to the government to stop the attack.

If you haven’t already purchased the Archdiocesan Directory for 2012, I would suggest you get one as a souvenir. On page L-3, there is a complete list of Catholic hospitals and health care institutions in Cook and Lake counties. Each entry represents much sacrifice on the part of medical personnel, administrators and religious sponsors. Each name signifies the love of Christ to people of all classes and races and religions. Two Lents from now, unless something changes, that page will be blank.

Apart from the outsized danger George predicts, this rebuke, especially coming from the Cardinal of Obama’s home town, is sure to send a message to the White House. Especially considering that the President made a special point of meeting with Cardinal George back in March of 2009. Though the White House claimed that George and Obama had a close relationship due to their mutual home town, the Cardinal didn’t seem in any hurry to warm up to the President:

Though Obama and George have both held prominent posts in Illinois, where they met a number of times, they never developed a relationship, the cardinal said [in November 2008]. Obama, who is Protestant, was a state senator in Illinois from 1997 to 2004, when he was elected to the U.S. Senate.

“It’s always been a friendly meeting, never substantive,” George said at a November meeting of the USCCB in Baltimore.

And even if George and Obama do have their tensions, what about George’s warning? How much of an impact would the loss of every Catholic hospital have on the U.S.? Quite a large one, as the Catholic Reporter detailed in 2003. According to the Reporter, the Catholic Church oversees the nation’s largest group of non-profit systems, with over 600 hospitals maintained by the institution.

    This is exactly what I have been waiting to hear. I was hoping the Catholic Church would play hardball. Close down every Catholic hospital and every Catholic charity in the nation.

    then people will see clearly what happens when THE PARTY TRIES TO LIMIT FREEDOM THROUGH MANDATES.

    Only I wish they would do it now, before the election. They should close it all down tomorrow. Obama would spoil his britches.

    Obama does not pass the lemon test!
    When Obama said we should talk with our enemies; I heard, based on his black theology values we should bow down to our enemies and consider their ways in our life. My heart yelled NO!!! Obama has showed though his actions he believes Islam is a wonderful way of life and it should be implemented in our laws also. He has surrounded himself with Marxist and Muslims and his friends are not our nations friends. He is using our taxes to rebuild mosques in Egypt ect…His primary effect is advancing the religion of Islam. Catholic’s values are centered on the beatitudes by helping though their ministry to shelter the homeless feed the poor, help the sick and dying ect… Obama is placing laws on the catholic religion that primary effect is inhibiting the catholic religion.
    Obama is guilty of excessive government entanglement.

    The government’s action must have a secular legislative purpose;
    The government’s action must not have the primary effect of either advancing or inhibiting religion;
    The government’s action must not result in an “excessive government entanglement” with religion.

      Your anger towards the Catholic Church is obvious. No organization of faith/religion should be compelled to obey dictates that are outside of their values. Is the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) perfect? No they are not just like every other religion is not perfect either. However, just because the RCC has made grievious mistakes in the past does not mean that they should be made to endure eternal public scorn from those who have issues with them. I was raised Catholic, lived in it, was educated in it. I had my own serious issues with the RCC. However, when I came to realize that the church is run by imperfect human beings I began to understand and to see faith in a Perfect God as more important that religion anyday. Now I still worship in the Church because I want to worship there.

      When government dictates to the church, like the USSR did, and China does now, will you stand up and defend them or will you let gov’t run all over them. Who will defend you and yours when the gov’t agents come for you?

      We must all stand together against this oppression from Big Brother. God Bless the USA!

      They really don’t need to close the hospitals to get the same results… What they need to do, is FIRE everyone, and rehire them as contract labor. As contract labor, they are responsible for their own taxes, and paperwork, and most of all their own health and dental insurance, thereby dumping it all in obama’s lap. They don’t lose their jobs, but now obama has to get them insured.

      The government would have a hard time taking over the Catholic hospitals if they are nothing but rubble. Keep in mind this is private property. For them to be taken over, they would need to suspend the constistution’s foundation. They would attempt to secure the property through eminent domain. Hope the Catholic church demolishes them prior to that happening.

      To those saying that Obama will “take over” the hospitals… he can’t. They are still owned by the church. He would have to build new churches and staff them. Since it would be a government project it would take years. If the hospital shutdown would have any impact though it would have to be immediate… not “2 Lents from now”. Immediately say no new patients, then slowly discharge those being treated.

      I do agree though that Republicans in Washington have no backbone and would cave in seconds, not minutes…..

      Tripleg – do not forget the recent eminent domain rulings. This allows the government to take over private property if it is deemed for the “common good”. This came from the supreme court in a case about private homes being taken over for the development of a new hotel/casino for the benefit of tax levies. Not the supreme courts brightest moment, but it is now the law of the land.

    The Pastors in my area of New Jersey are all still clinging to their Social Justice programs. They did not read the Pope’s letter to their congregations on this issue. The catholic church in America is deeply infected with the heresy of liberation theology.

    Obama and the Marxist thugs are only getting started on their attacks on the church. Italy is about to start taxing church property–retroactively–in order to fix their budget crisis. That will be floated here by the Dims soon enough. The power to tax is the power to destroy, and we all know how much the Left loves to tax. Separation of Church and State is a one way street to the Left, a one way street that will lead us to Hell.

      To the Catholics that voted for Obama last time, please take another look and listen to what your Cardinal is saying. Please do not vote for him again. If you are true to your faith, if you are truly a Christian, you cannot vote for a man who advocates abortion. It is murder. It is an abomination to God and those who advocate it will be held accountable. Spread the word to your Catholic friends and take a stand against this evil.       Catholics are the people who run Charity Hospitals. The hospitals that take care of people who have no insurance or just Medicaid. I worked at a suburban Cleveland hospital. When someone didn’t have insurance, we stabilized them then sent them down to St.Vincent Charity.

      That’s who Catholics think they are. The people who take the people non-Catholic hospitals don’t want.

      With all those charity hospitals gone, won’t it be the poor people who suffer most? Oh well, they’ll have outlived their usefulness by then anyway. Then the government tanking trying to keep up the funding necessary to run their utopian system will be the icing on the cake.

Talk to someone who has gone to a VA for their medical care. It’s a death sentance. With Obummers cuts in their healthcare today (his reward for their sacrifces) it will be even worse. That‘s how he’s offsetting Moooochelles vacation expenses.

    I am on the Catholic side in this fight but I want to know what their excuse is on their illegal immigrant stance and their stance on Obamacare.       I would love to hear some serious talk about the border, not the typical, “send them all back” rhetoric.

      The first thing to do, obviously, is to secure the border. Then we have to figure out a way to filter through the ones that are here in order to identify the trouble makers. It’s a tough situation that requires thoughtful and humane solutions.

      Let it be known that I said we must “secure the border” first.

      Thanks for the clarity on the immigration issue. Being devout Catholic having a reasonable knowledge of the general belief of things, I instinctively knew it was something like that without searching into it. You did me a favor. I’m saving your comment. Thank you.

      The Church will not back down on this religious persecution from Obama. People do not understand that the Catholic Church is Not a democracy. It has rules…very ‘old’ rules. This is Dogma. 2000 years of Dogma. Dogma does not change. It is not a lighter doctrine like not eating meat on Friday, which is changable. People think because 98% of Catholics in America use contraception, it should be allowable. IT DON”T MATTER!!! (eg. Pelosi thinks it does. By the way she excommunicates herself as Catholic dispite what she calls herself. It’s a real shame.) It is the Church Teaching that Obama is trying to kill. Then it’s dominoes. Friends, be you Protestant, Jew, Muslim, Buddist, Hindu, Atheist, whatever, if you can’t see the light of freedom involved here, you will never have the chance.

      Watch EWTN: ‘World Over’ Tells the good AND bad that is going on in the Church. The ‘Catholic’ group backing Obamacare that Obama exploited, doing so,went against the group of American Bishops.
      The Church Will shut their hospitals down, the faithful will die before obeying this new law, and forget getting any Mother Theresa compassion anymore in Post-America.

I guess hearing all this 98% coming out, which I did question (especially when it came out of Pelosi’s mouth), I knew wasn’t relative to the issue persecuting the Freedom of Religion, meaning even 100% would not be relative to Catholicism.       Thanks to God that we all can have a grounded ‘holy pride’ in our Catholic Faith. All Christians have and always will be persecuted. We aren’t above our Master. As Catholics, we have the ‘boundaries for freedom’, the Dogma/Doctrines. eg.‘We are not allow to condemn anybody to hell’. Now that thought, in itself, really lightens that big straining effort on the mind and heart. What a Freedom right there! It‘s good we aren’t alone. Thanks, Man.

    Nothing would make BHO happier than if Catholic hospitals were closed or were sold off. This is just part of his plan. Besides, if we lose this fight against him, what’s next a mandate that requires all hospitals to offer any kind of abortion?

    The Congress is our legislative body, not the Executive office.
    1. Obama does not have the authority to issue such a mandate.
    2. Even if he did have the authority, it impinges on our 1st Amendment right to freedom of religion, and is unconstitutional. An unconstitutional law is null and void. Therefore, all employers can ignore this mandate and refuse to pay any taxes or penalties.

      I’m sorry, but when Obamacare was passed, it provides the gateway for this legally. In other words, the US Congress sanctioned this through passing Obamacare. The only way is for this to go to the judicial way. Now, in March the Supreme Court will determine if the “mandate” portion of the healthcare is Constitutional….. if not, it should remedy this over-reach as you have stated. What is astonishing to me are the people that support this President

    Odumbo and his corrupt cabinet may try to take over all 600 hospitals but they can’t force all the Catholics to work at them. We need to stand together. There are enough Catholic voters alone in the USA to insure that this Marxist never gets re-elected.
