Chicago Teacher Under Investigation for Posting Pic of Student‘s ’Jolly Rancher’ Hairdo

Chicago Teacher Under Investigation for Posting Pic of Students Jolly Rancher Hairdo

A Chicago mother is outraged after a teacher took a picture of her daughter’s hairdo that included Jolly Rancher candies and put on Facebook. And despite the teacher’s apology, the mother is demanding more action, and the school is now investigation:

WLS-TV reports:

Ukailya Lofton, 7, says math is her favorite subject. She also likes to dress up. For picture day last week, Ukailya wore Jolly Rancher candies at the end of her braids, a hairstyle she says her computer teacher at Overton Elementary School mocked on Facebook.

“She took a picture of me and then she said my boyfriend can’t believe this,” Ukailya told ABC7.

“She told me her teacher told her to put her hair in her face and she took out her cell phone and she took a picture, not knowing she was putting my baby on Facebook and criticize her,” said Lucinda Williams, mother.

Williams says she copied some of the comments from the teacher’s Facebook page. The teacher allegedly wrote, “right, this is for picture day.” Then someone commented,”if you are going to make your child look ridiculous, the least you can do is have them matching.” Another wrote,”yeah, this is foolishness.” And one added, “I laughed so hard that my contact popped out.”

A spokesperson for the school district told the news outlet “the district is currently investigating the matter to determine if any policies have been violated. If policies have in fact been violated, the district will move on disciplinary action.”

Despite the teacher meeting with the girl’s mother, apologizing, and deleteing the Facebookpage, the mother is not appeased.

“She never apologized to my daughter. She is still in the school. She wasn’t suspended. I mean, it’s like nothing happened. She just apologized and that’s it. That’s not enough,” said Lucinda Williams.

She’s hired an attorney and is planning on filing a lawsuit.

the teacher was stupid for posting it and having somewhat questionable comments about it. as holding a position in the public you should be held to a elavated standard. now if she took the picure and gave praise thats one thing. i think the picture was taken for malcontent, and shame on her as this is a child who was probably realy proud of the sweet hair style. come on folks this is a kid let them have the weird hairstyles and growth phases. my gosh, as ugly as my bonjovi hair style was backin high school, im glad i grew my hair long while i still had hair.

The kid had ‘jolly Ranchers candy’ at the end of her braids/dreadlocks!!! Her mother surely did that and thought it looked good. LOL! She made a fool of her daughter and is mad because someone thought it was funny. These people are a bunch of idiots. The name ‘U-kailya says it all.>>LOL>>
The teacher should not have put the kid on facebook. She should have known better unless her name is lukwicha.

well for one thing you can not see the child’s face, nor was the child’s name given.sounds to me like this mother is looking for the winning lottery ticket.that’s the problem today is that there are to many frivolous law suits.manly because the courts award such huge amounts.i could see if some one was hurt or property was destroyed but this is ridiculous.discipline the teacher and let it go.

Part of me sez, so what? If you can‘t see the kids face and really don’t know who it is, so what! Surprised Michelle Obama did not weight in on this one. What would the food police think about smuggling jolly rancher contraband into school in your hairdo? You could get fat eating that stuff. Maybe bananas or carrot sticks would be acceptable.

On the other hand, most schools require a release signed by a parent to even take a picture of the little darlings. My daughter was student teaching in an elementary school and we were no allowed to take a picture of the kids she was teaching even for personal use. I doubt this 7 year old would have seen her picture on the teachers facebook account. If so, what was a 7 year old doing on facebook? Did she previously friend the teacher?

Well that’s the progressive way, mom, they can insult you and you have to take it – the teacher’s union will see to that. Want change in behavior, 2012 is coming, tell them with your vote. You cannot expect change if you keep doing the same thing over and over. Make sure you tell your friends and family too. If the teacher doesn‘t or can’t apologize to the little girl, I don’t see how the teacher could be genuinely remorseful. In my humble opinion, the most important person to apologize to is the little girl, not the parent.

No matter what the adults do, the little girl can‘t pretend it didn’t happen. The teacher broke her trust and I have no idea if an apology to the student would’ve been enough. It‘s sad that we’ll never find out.

When your grooming includes braids with candy in them, then you derserve to get remarks like these, I feel sorry for the little girl because the mother is the one that is stupid, and the Black community wonders why no one respects them, dress your kids like this and want to sue when someone makes fun of your kid. Maybe the mother should dress her daughter like Aunt Jamima and then complain when she gets more remarks, respect is earned and doing that to your kid you earn nothing.

Teachers should be teaching the students not snapping photos of them. It is neither within their job description nor is it within their rights to take pictures of other people, without their consent, whether it be for personal or for public use. It is a mindset that teachers have, that they are within their own little world where they are the King/Queen or God/Goddess. They have no humility, little intellect, and we wonder why our children are coming out of schools dumber than when they went in.
