Children of Paralyzed Afghan Veteran Punished for Wearing Pro-Military T-Shirts to School

TX Students In Trouble for Wearing Military T Shirt | Perez Gorda FamilyThe family of a paralyzed Afghanistan veteran is going head-to-head with a Texas school district over pro-military t-shirts that apparently landed two their elementary school children in trouble.

The shirts, which have the logo of an organization that provides homes and support for wounded veterans, apparently violate Masters Elementary School’s dress code.

Josie Perez-Gorda, the mother of Savannah, a first-grader, and Taylor, a fourth-grader, said that her daughters were wearing shirts from the Homes For Our Troops organization. The family’s connection to the group is a very personal one.

The group, with a self-proclaimed mission of “helping those who have selflessly given to our country and have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries since September 11, 2001,” may be providing housing assistance to Perez-Gorda’s family. Her husband, Army Spc. Justin Perez-Gorda, was injured when he encountered a road-side bomb in Afghanistan.

She explained this revelation in a recent interview with San Antonio’s KENS:

The mother maintains that her girls should have been permitted to wear the shirts in honor of both their father and the organization without incident.

“These guys are fighting for our country and they should be able to wear something that honors their parents, especially if they are wounded,” she said.

TX Students In Trouble for Wearing Military T Shirt | Perez Gorda Family

The school district, though, claims that the girls have been in trouble for violating dress regulations numerous times before. Additionally, a spokesperson for the Judson Independent School District emphasized the need for continuity. Currently, the dress code requires that students, grades pre-K through eighth, wear a Polo-styled shirt (any color is permissible) or a shirt with a college or JISD campus spirit logo.

“We do have a standardized dress code,” proclaimed spokeswoman Aubrey Chancellor. “We certainly support the military, but we do have to be consistent across the board when it comes to following the dress code.”

Chancellor urged the family to attend a school board meeting if they wish to see the school’s dress code amended.

You know what I miss the most about life in America? We used to be a country proud of our individualism! Now we are being herded into total conformity! Dress this way, think this, do this, everybody must be equal, learn what we teach, and watch what we tell you. Read what we provide, vote for the destruction of values, we will provide all you need from birth to death, we will have a czar for every step you take just give is time. I see what is happening across our country and I look at my grandkids and I personally fight to hold back the tears, they may end up in life not knowing freedom, or how it was obtained, or not knowing those that fought for their freedom. To be “PC” is the most destructive epidemic that has crossed across our great nation. Where ever it gets a hold it strangles the life out of everything that it touches!

I agree, and can you imagine Texas of all states, supposedly a conservative, “Don’t tread on me state” with at least two of the largest bases in the states along with at least 1 if not more large VA hospital. I hope these parents go to the parents/teachers meeting and raise cain. I hope their Father goes too. Can we write letters to this school? If so we should write and protest, thousands of letters would be good. Join me.

“In the olden days” everyone knew what was acceptable dress and didn’t need the the school to police it, except on the most rare occasions. Now kids can’t think for themselves and do the right thing on their own, it has to be enforced or everyone runs amuck. PARENTS are to blame for not teaching and enforcing common decency and respect and the schools have become like prisons. They are incarcerating not only their bodies but their minds as well. We do need an awaking of the American spirit and to invite all those who do not wish to be AMERICAN to find another more welcoming place that suits their needs. We need to stop trying to accommodate every tiny minority by removing our culture. They need to adjust themselves to OUR culture, not the other way around. We need to start in our cities and our towns and take this country back from NON AMERICANS and that has nothing to do with ethnicity, and everything to do with mindset. Sadly, our President should be the first to relocate to a place that better serves his socialist anti-American agenda. Wow, what a great country this could be again if the “can do” people would rise up and lead this country. All of Washington needs a great cleansing at the polls in November.

I hear4 what you are saying. The problem is that so many people don’t act with common sense and insist on doing or wearing what is truly obscene or objectionable. Since parents and kids won’t use any common sense, the schools make intrusive rules. The answer, of course, is for people to simply be considerate of others so rules like this don’t have to be made. It wasn‘t always necessary when morality was still taught in the schools and the popular culture didn’t glorify profanity, sexuality, crudeness.

I believe you interpretation of the story is the correct one. If we are going to stand in the fire of truth that Blaze is supposed to represent, then we have to talk about the facts. And the facts are the school has a dress code that limits what kids can wear and this t-shirt appear to fall outside of those parameters. No matter how noble the the cause, making one exception will open up Pandora’s box for the school system. Slap that logo on a polo shirt and the problem is solved IMO.

@I-HATER. Yes, I believe in freedom and as it exists under federalism, local communities can come together and set standards that are appropriate for itself. I don’t have to agree with the standards but it is their right under the US system of government. With regards to other kids violating the dress code in some other fashion and not being subject to the same scrutiny, that would make for an interesting follow-up story. If that’s the case, I’m with you, but the facts at this moment don’t point to that.

      Dear ALLLOST,
You seem to have skipped a line: the dress code requires that students, grades pre-K through eighth, wear a Polo-styled shirt (any color is permissible) OR a shirt with a college or JISD campus spirit logo.
I.e. they can wear a collarless shirt if it has a college or JISD (Judson Independent School District?) logo. So something that says Columbia or Harvard or Squat U is OK, but not something that is pro-America? My objection still stands. While I agree that violent, Occupy, obscene or communist logos are out of place, any exception made for school districts or colleges most certainly be made for the United States Military. Who was it who “invented” being PC? Either Stalin or Lenin, or one of the early Marxist types,…Yes, really. It sure cuts down on your oppositions’ free speech when YOU get to decide what THEY are allowed to say.
If you haven’t home schooled because you want your child to have friends and develop social skills, you need to look into it. There are co-ops of parents who organize bands, put on plays, and have team sports for their home schooled kids. They can get a great education…and learn to not skip important lines in Blaze articles.

I love the troops, but this is not about the troops, or the wounded.. its about 2 kids thinking what they think is more important than the rules.. Wonder if this school system also has in their curriculum classes on how to demonstrate and boycott? Wonder if they are also buying into LAUSD’s latest decision to pass students with a “D” so they can keep their dropout rates lower and graduation rates higher thus getting more federal=taxpayer dollars? Even if the shirt went against the dress code, the teachers and the school should have shown compassion towards the sacrifices this family has made for this country and the common sense to make exceptions to some of their rules. By making an issue out of this they are appear to be bullying the little children. I wonder if these teachers belong to a union.

Rick Perry and George Bush have almost successfully transitioned the state of Texas to a Democratic state( with no help from Obama, I might add) with their open borders policies.

Situations like this are difficult. I support schools having dress codes. The real question here is whether or not the school is “Hiding” behind the dress code to mask a lack of support for our troops or whether they are truly just trying to uphold the law of the school district.
However, I would like to say to the Perez-Gorda Family, I can not change your local school district and I know there are many variables when considering a location to live and raise your family. But if you want to be around like-minded, patriotic, soldier-sailor-airmen-marine loving people, we would love to have your family in Idaho! God Bless, and I pray the school administrators are truly just trying to uphold a rule.

The kids should have worn a Polo shirt with the charity’s logo on it. Rules: followed. Problem: solved.

Would another child be in trouble if he/she wore a OWC shirt?
If there is a formal dress code then EVERYONE should have to comply. If there is not dress code prohibiting this attire the school should back off.
Another reason for school uniforms even in public schools.

If this is happening in Texas we are all screwed. I am almost to the point where I believe this country deserves Obama and the Communist hammer.

Why is the Blaze not reporting on the house passing CISPA? Everyone’s beloved Col. West voted for it. We are losing freedoms weekly now. You people need to wake up and realize both sides are working hard against us. Everyone of of the so called Tea Party class of 2010 that has voted to strip our freedoms away have to be gone. We need to have a brokered convention and put in a candidate that wants to restore our freedoms not take them way like Obama.

    WAKE UP!!!

Then pay for a polo style version then. Sounds like they wanted to provoke an incident. I have to side with the school on this one.

OLDGUY49, That was the first thing that popped into my mind as I finished the story. I got nailed once when I forgot to wear a belt. Back then T shirts were underwear only except for PE. Even then we wore a school issued shorts and T shirts but could wear gray only sweats during cold weather. No sandals and never get caught without socks.
