Children With DNA From Three Parents Only Three Years Away?

Researchers from Newcastle University have been funded more than $9.3 million by the Wellcome Trust to begin experimenting with a method that could lead to children having DNA from three people to eliminate some genetic disorders.
According to the Telegraph, the technique involves removing the nucleus from a donor cell and inserting a fertilized nucleus from the hopeful couple or the unfertilized nucleus of the mother for fertilization later. This effort, researchers believe, could help couples where the mother has known genetic disorders carried on her mitochondrial DNA — DNA found in the mitochondria of a cell.
Mitochondrial DNA, which composes 0.2 percent of a human‘s DNA and doesn’t influence traits like physical appearance, is passed down from mother to offspring. But, there are several genetic disorders, such as muscular dystrophy and ataxia, which are associated with this type DNA.

As of right now in the U.K., such embryos created would not be allowed to be placed into patients but the Telegraph reports that the health secretary could lift this regulation and bring the research into human trials within two to three years.
The Telegraph has more from the researchers:
Prof. Doug Turnbull, who is leading the research, said: “The important thing is that this has the possibility of stopping the disease completely.
“If this technique proves to be as safe as IVF and as effective as the preliminary studies, I think we could totally prevent the transmission of these diseases.”

Sir Mark Walport, head of the Wellcome Trust, said the genetic impact of inheriting a third person’s mitochondrial DNA would be as minimal as changing the batteries in a camera.
He said: “We welcome the opportunity to discuss with the public why we believe this technique is essential if we are to give families affected by these diseases the chance to have healthy children, something most of us take for granted.”
The Telegraph reports that this technique has been successful at preventing genetic diseases carried on mitochondrial DNA in monkeys and mice.
But, the research is not without its opposition. The Telegraph reports the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children as calling it “macabre and unethical” and cited fears of other “developmental abnormalities”.
Cristina Odone, in an opinion’s piece on the research for the Telegraph, writes that she sees this method as another attempt to “dehumanize disabled people.” Odone writes that unlike chemotherapy and vaccines, which are meant to save lives while still “confirming that every one of them is special”, this technique is only attempting to save healthy lives while “keep[ing] unborn the rest.”

There is nothing all that offensive in the idea of using DNA from a couple but using a third woman’s cell sack and associated mitochodrial DNA to host the “organism”. God breathes life into the person when he is conceived, even in a test tube. If this offended him, he would leave the thing to simply never exist. In fact, I believe the soul was already created and simply awaiting the creation of the body here on Earth.
The notion that human beings can create other human beings really should not be all that alarming and surprising. Each of you was created by two other people, and each of you have the DNA of thousands upon thousands of people in you. Are you an abomination? I don’t think so, and that is even factoring in the probability that some of your ancestors engaged in some pretty “unholy” procreation techniques.
Using simple math, and assuming a literal translation of the Bible, people have been reproducing for roughly 8000 years, the average age of pregnancy probably being somewhere around 25 years, means that each of us has the DNA of 2^(8000/25), or 2E96 people. Now, there hasn’t even been that many people in existence, not even close, so you are actually the product of a WHOLE BUNCH of inbreeding over the centuries, cousins with cousins mainly, but also etc.: Fathers with daughters, uncles with nieces. You can be assured of it.

Not saying this is right or wrong, just noting it as fact.
God gave us knowledge and (some) wisdom and I imagine that he expects us to use that knowledge to improve ourselves and our lot in life. And ESPECIALLY to help others. He gave us the ability to plant seeds and farm, to raise cattle and sheep, and to cure our own diseases. I don’t imagine he meant for us to starve to death because we refuse to plant seeds. He gave us the ability and desire to travel and explore space, and he made space sufficiently big that we will never reach the end of space.
I think all these things are miracles, gifts of God.

Human beings have the intellectual ability to advance science and technology but our imperfect human nature will invariably find a way to misuse them for personal gain and greed. Who’s looking out for that? Here’s an example as applied to our daily lives: Computers have vastly improved our lives; we can bank from home, pay our bills instantly, access all manner of records and background checks, search our family trees, find medical information on our frightening illnesses, shop, gamble and talk to family on the other side of the world with the click of a button. Those wonderful conveniences have spawned a whole new breed of criminals who relentlessly pursue our personal information and personal wealth, enabled worldwide terror to infiltrate our country, created easy access to our precious children from dangerous sexual predators and traded away our privacy to prying government eyes. Protections can’t keep up with technological advances and neither can they with biological advances. Progressives are already tampering with nature with abortion and easy access to birth control. They do it with an ultimate goal of controlling us. Could eugenics be next? If you think it can’t happen, you’re sadly naive.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 10:27amI think, IMHBLO, you give too much credit to the “righteousness” of the motivation behind this quasi experimentation. The stated goal of molecular biological science from its early stages is to disprove God “IS” the creator of life.
Again, IMHBLO, even if they should succeed they are really doing little more than their Japanese imitation of copying something. That won’t keep them from taking their bows, though.
Creating life from nothing, is a ‘bit’ more challenging. And few would suggest that science, using all of its tools and conditions and requisites has any chance of standing in the open and “conjuring” life from thin air.

I‘m sure that you are aware that mitochondrial DNA is passed directly from mother to child and that the only changes between the two’s mitochondrial DNA is from mutations that occur during cell reproduction. For all intents and purposes, this DNA is the same from generation to generation and has been for hundreds if not thousands of years or generations.
With normal DNA, it is assumed that aging and disease are caused because said DNA has be read, replicated, coiled, uncoiled, and has basically gotten too old. Now, it is obvious that muscular dystrophy other diseases caused by variance in mitochondrial DNA hurt the affected person. BUT, what if the mutation that causes their disease is a mutation linked with a recombination of base pairs which actually renews the DNA and keeps it viable for generations to come? Remember, sickle cell anemia is a genetic disorder that can be deadly and destructive, but it has allowed people to survive in malaria ridden jungles for thousands of year. Sometimes something that seems purely destructive, is actually just another way for the species to survive in the face of some threat.
People like you who are okay with tampering with the human genome as opposed to allowing nature to take care of it will just end up trying to “fix” all the things “wrong” and one day you will realize that the things that were “wrong” kept you alive.

You get much more than 0.2% of someone else’s genes when you take a heart, lung, kidney, etc. and I don’t think many people here would bash on the usage of transplants unless they happen to be Christian Scientists.
If, on the other hand we’re talking about a person with 33%/33%/33% of a genetic combination instead of 49.9%/49.9%/0.2% then please holler from the rooftops about violating ethics.

If you got that from another comment, then you obviously misunderstood that several thousand years ago human incest was not an uncommon occurrence. Hell, the European royalty all interbred until just a short time ago to keep their blood “pure”. At least that is what books say. Personally I think they did it to keep the inheritance tightly bound to their families. Compound interest is a great thing.

This may sound pretty wild but I believe that the future “mark of the beast” is not only going to be a number which enables access to the worldwide financial system, but its also another kind of number…a genetic organism with a code which when implanted in a human being has the capability to cause genetic changes in the God created human DNA structure. They will claim it has the ability to prevent diseases and give the body the ability to live healthy longer. The bible calls it “the number of his name”, that shows identity. If they could change those identities to share a common factor besides what God has made, then they will have succeeded in destroying Gods image (identity) in all of us.

Learn how to see your own aura if you’d like access the spiritual, which is all around… ever like to see your soul burning right before your own eyes? :) It’s very possible.
What about death? The law of the conservation of energy says all that energy, say making your heart beat, processing chemical interactions in your mind and more, none of it simply disappears or turns to nothingness when you die. Your past relatives… mine, they’re all here around us still as energy flowing around us all.

I love kids they are a gift from God to fulfill our lives and men do not know what those needs and fulfillments are…. they do not know the plan…. I would not want to be in their shoes. In 3 years they are going to really try to make people better … well sounds like a scene eerily out of Serenity. I agree with Malcolm I do not hold to that … I aim to misbehave…..

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 12:21amI forgot if this story was on The Blaze but scientists have recently been able to create multicellular organisms from one cell organisms. All they did was take a bunch of one cell yeast in a flask and let it settle then take out the stuff that settled to the bottom first and do that over and over again for 60 days and the one cell yeasts became multicellular with individual cells having specific functions in the multicellular organisms. Perhaps gravity is one facet of the supreme intelligence of God.
