The destruction of life and property at the hands of vicious storms and tornados that ravaged through the South and Midwest Friday has been astounding. The Associated Press reports that at least 38 people have died across five states, and emergency officials are continuing to search through leveled towns in the hope of finding survivors.
“Friday’s violent storms touched down in at least a dozen states from Georgia to Illinois, killing 19 people in Kentucky, 14 in Indiana, three in Ohio, and one each in Alabama and Georgia. They scarred the landscape over hundreds of miles, leaving behind a trail of shredded sheet metal, insulation, gutted churches, crunched-up cars and even a fire hydrant.”
The small southern Indiana town of Henryville was hit hard by merciless storms Friday, having several residents represented among the 14 Indianans confirmed to have been killed during the storm. Joe Sullivan, a National Weather Service meteorologist, explained to CNN that the tornado that swept through the area of Henryville was an EF-4 — meaning it had sustained winds of between 166 and 200 mph, putting it in the top 2% of all tornadoes in terms of strength. Sullivan told CNN that the tornado went for 52 miles and was roughly 150 yards wide.
Lawrence Smith, a reporter with WDRB, caught the tornado heading towards him on video, running to a convenience store for cover as the storm headed his way:
Additional video of the Twister hurdling towards Henryville:
Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels spoke with CNN Saturday as he was observing the damage to Henryville, a town populated by just under 2,000 people.
We‘re not unfamiliar with Mother Nature’s wrath out here in Indiana,” Gov. Daniels said. “But this about as serious as we‘ve seen it in the years I’ve been in this job.”
President Barack Obama has offered federal assistance to the states hit hard by the storm, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich declared an emergency Saturday.

Posted on March 5, 2012 at 12:05pmAs an Indiana native, all I can say is now we know a little of how Joplin, MO felt….
Its a shame that people are suffering and that this happens to them, but hey, that is the risk of living in the midwest….. We have no real danger from Hurricanes, Tsunami’s or any other water related disasters, but we ARE at the mercy of the Great winds caused by twisters….
Its a trade off people, Live on the west coast and you are plagued by: Wild Fires, Hurricanes, Tsunami’s, earthquakes and legally insane politicians…. in the Mid-west, all we really have is tornado’s and tiny (usually) earthquakes…
Which is why the Mid-west is STILL the best place in the USA to live…. The people are sane (for the most part) and the weather is fairly nice….

Posted on March 5, 2012 at 8:43amI signed up just to post on this story. I live about 7 miles from where this occurred, and I have to say a majority of the comments on this story just piss me off. People died, people were injured, possessions were destroyed, and many lives were changed and you all are making jokes about it. I don’t know if half you all on this site are now trolls, but seriously, have you lost everything in you that makes you human?
The communities surrounding Henryville; such as Sellersburg, New Albany, Floyds Knobs, and even people from Louisville, Ky have donated so much clothing and food that the Red Cross cannot even store it. That is what people around here are like; we take care of each other and don’t make jokes about others hardship. There have been so many volunteers that they have been turning them away, and have told them to come back at a later date.
In closing, just shut your mouths instead of make some dumb comment.

It seems like the norm is to build and build again….but no improvements with building codes.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 11:48pmGov. Mitch has a short memory. The Evansville Tornado of November 2005 was a tornado that formed early in the morning of November 6, 2005, outside of Evansville, Indiana. The tornado resulted in 25 confirmed fatalities across the region, making it the deadliest and most destructive November tornado in Indiana’s history.

If you think it does then you are a FOOL who doesn’t know **** from shineola! No pitty FOOL! One disaster CAN’T and never will compare to another – th

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 11:43pmSilly me, I should have known that all this, all these thousands of years of people getting born and people dying is for nothing. And that there is no possibility of anyone’s seeds getting taken anywhere else. Except that I’d be lying if I said that. What do people think that someday the sun super-novas and that’s just the end for all the generations and generations of souls on earth? Surely not, that would be a waste of this field. Some but not all will be leaving, and the rest will be destroyed if they don‘t conquer by the end of this star’s life.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 11:52pmWhat Is Wrong With These People?
They live in tornado ally yet none of them build a cement block storm cellar in their back yard. When they build their new houses, they could have asked the builder to add on a storm cellar. Its like the people up North who have days of power outages every year but don’t buy back up generators or keep extra food on hand..

Actually, although Indiana is not typically “drawn” on the maps as being part of tornado alley, it is one of the most active states for tornadoes. If you consider the number of tornadoes per square mile, Indiana ranks number three, behind only Florida (also not in the alley) and Oklahoma.
Indiana has also been part of some of the most violent tornado outbreaks of the past.
