China’s Deadly Missile Boats Outpacing Similar U.S. Craft

Speed, agility, and a weapons system designed to destroy much larger ships define the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN) triple-hull Type 022 missile boat.First Look: Chinas Deadly New Missile Boats

Wired is reporting that China has already built a fleet of these missile ships, which are designed to dominate shallow water, shore-hugging maritime missions, and function as an inexpensive anti-ship platform compared to traditional frigates and destroyers.

But what is perhaps most distressing is the creation and deployment of this major Chinese weapons systems over the past few years has blown away U.S. efforts to build a similar vessel.

First Look: Chinas Deadly New Missile BoatsChina plans to crank out a reported 83 of the new missile boats, but the U.S. equivalent of the Type 022- the Littoral Combat Ship- has seen many budget and technical problems over the years, and so far only two have been built. One vessel, the Freedom,  has been relegated to drug interdiction missions in the Caribbean. As Wired recently wrote to compare the programs in cost and capability:

“In just seven years, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy has built 83 of the 400-ton Type 022s at an estimated cost of $40 million per ship. And production continues at a high rate in several shipyards. The U.S. Navy, by comparison, has finished just two LCS in the same span of time, each at a cost of more than $600 million.

The Chinese ships sport eight anti-ship missiles apiece plus defensive guns and surface-to-air missiles. The American vessels, lightly armed in their own right, are designed to accommodate “plug-and-play” weapons kits, none of which are complete.”

Clearly, the Chinese appear ahead in the race to efficiently build shallow water attack craft capable of deploying serious firepower, but it may not matter to the U.S. Unlike on land, where asymmetrical tactics have dominated resistance to the U.S for the past decade, on the ocean’s surface, major military hardware (carrier deployed aircraft, nuclear subs, destroyers) still carries the day. Any Chinese ship built to dominate littoral missions may ultimately be too vulnerable in practice to U.S. aircraft and submarine attacks.

However, the Type 022 is part of a broader Chinese naval build-up that includes the recent news this summer that China is putting its first refitted aircraft carrier out to sea- and likely plans to build much more advanced carriers in the next couple of years.

So while a shallow water missile ship like the Type 022 may not be a threat to U.S. forces, it could be useful in the near term if China pushes its spheres of influence into disputed maritime territory. China may find fast-moving missile ships quite useful in intimidating Japanese or Philippine naval vessels.

And by the time the U.S. catches up to China’s small attack ship programs, we might already be more concerned about their newly christened aircraft carriers, and the continued expansion of their naval power deep into the western Pacific Ocean.

    Not only should we be concerned about their military and their alliance with Russia, but we should be very concerned about the possibility that they could call in the debt the US owes them. Lets see what we can nationalize and use as physical collateral for the debt: All private residential and commercial property, all our natural resources, all our agricultural land…anything of value. If you don’t think it can happen I say you are in dream land, soon to be China land. Obama Inc.would do it with no concern for the people of this country.

      The US Federal Government OWNS about 60% of the Western USA. I have been in fear for about 2 years that Obama and his socialist revolutionaries will just start giving China land in the US to pay off the debt. Senator Demitt started to touch on this about a year ago and fell short of saying it. What will we do if this happens?

      I do not know in what you believe, but there are many “prophetic” statements “out there” that speak of the break up of America into various sections under the control of various nations. I first thought these statements were foolish until I learned more. The fact that we cannot agree on how to even make toast leaves us an easy target… A house divided cannot stand. Its sad to see this happening.

      I think that technology sales to China started under “Slick Willy” Clinton administration. They allowed our missile technology to go to China to make sure that our private industry satellite companies had a safe way to get their hardware into space.

      It think it is probable China will use our outstanding debt to them as leverage in blackmailing us to stand down while they (China) invades Taiwan. After all, China has been fixated on pulling Taiwan back into the fold for decades.

      I also doubt China lent money without some collateral. Since American companies have been denied access to a vast amount of natural resources on federal land, our NR could be that collateral.

    The Obama administration, in their mission to gut the US as a major power, blew our armory with its $1T “stimulus” bill… it emptied the treasury in a single blast, removing ALL other options for this country to adjust to any later threat – military, economic, or catastrophic (hurricane, EQ, etc.) We‘re in God’s hands, now… and just my observation: looks like judgement time, folks. A house or kingdom divided will fall and a casual look at the forces in government seem to indicate we’re there.

    Just think……..What we pay the Chinese in two months interest they build one of these sea-worthy Type 022′s; while we’ve paid OVER $600 million for only one and we haven’t worked out all the kinks! Now, I don’t know how important these vessels are in the whole scheme of naval warfare, but if our country believes it’s worth money to build them then we have alot of catching up to do. I just hate losing.

      Our problem is that we build them way to high tech which makes them expensive and the other problem is that our labor costs are higher because we use Unionised Labor and they use Confiscated Slave Labor (Prison Labor) which reduces the cost of each vessel.

    Close-in, lightly armored ships aren’t going to be a problem with our navy which rarely goes close to land any longer. Frigates and Destroyers are designed for ship defense these days not bombarding islands like they did in WWII. Until the Chicoms get their own carriers will they become more of a threat. I would be more concerned about EMP attacks to our shipping and the US mainland than anything else.

      After America dropped the A-bombs, America became the must powerfull nation, the British asked Truman because let’s face it, Truman at the time was the most powerfull person in the world.
      When Truman got asked why he wanted to put the Jews back in the Middle East, he said it was because he was a devout baptist and he believed, according to the Bible, that the Jews belong in Israel.

      In my opinion he should have put them in a non drama place like Arizona, its got miles and miles of desert, and no one cares about your religion, thats what I like about America, unlike South America and many other places, Americans for the most part, don’t care about what a person does in their personal life. Just show up to work, thats it.

      Putting the Jews back in the Middle East, put in place the 1967 war, and one day this “Judgment Day” that people like to talk about so much could start back up. A lot of nukes out there my friend.

      I wrote about Korea because it was a Civil War, but Truman and the UN had to play king of the world, so for the last 60 years American tax money has been paying to keep a 30,000 man Army in place, do the math, thats Billions+, Jimmy Carter back in 1979 tried to pull the troops out of Korea, but he lost to the Generals, and we are still paying.

      Us Portuguese we are simple people, just looking at this middle east drama each day, don’t you ask yourself why ? Again you do seem to miss the point and it is probably because of this. Of course there are other reliable historians that are in agreement with the bible. The problem is not that the Jews are there. The problem is that much of the world doesn’t want them there. There is no problem with me standing at a bus stop. There becomes a problem when someone tries to remove me from the bus stop.       Back in 1986 I went to that area, I’ve been to Eilat and Egypt, and like I wrote us Portuguese are simple people, I just didn’t see what the big deal was about that land, to me it all seemed so problematic that, what’s the point, are we going to have WW3 over a small part of a desert ?

      I remember back in the 1970′s when Jim Jones and his 900+ sheepeople drank the grape cool-aid that killed them, and I just kept thinking why? I ask myself that same question watching the daily middle east drama and it’s over some 3,000 year old prophecy, to me it’s just a pile of rocks, I don’t get it, and don’t want to. This is like a different version of Jim Jones but with the same ending.

      When I wrote us Portuguese are simple, I wrote that with much pride, why?
      Out of all the countries that I have been in, the ones I liked the most are the ones that are, Ok wait for it, wait for it – MODERATE !
      I don’t mean to disrespect you, but let’s look at this again, is a pile of rocks worth WW3 ?
      You see us simple people don’t think after we die we will get 72 virgins, thats why us simple people don’t walk around with a vest wanting to blow people up. All this after life talk is just a 2,000 year old gimmick to get the sheepeople to follow, us simple Portuguese just follow the fresh baked bread with fish, oh that’s living.
      My friend if I could take you to Portugal, you would love it, dress the way you want, say what you want, that’s not true in the middle east. Like I wrote I’ve been there, that was back in 1986, it was much safer back then, I wouldn’t go back today.

    If China and Russia decide to eventually make their move and attack, California and the West coast will find out that restricting their citizens 2nd amendment rights was a bad idea.

    On the other hand, most of California and the west coast are Marxist so they will probably welcome them with open arms initially. That is until, their free speech and free spirits are crushed then they will cry for help.

    While I agree these boats can be a problem, particularlly for the small Island nations that claim rights to the Spratly Islands. China could drive out any fishing and oil operations that these countries have going on. They are no real threat to the US Navy , China would be foolish to fire on a US Frigate or Destroyer. China is a decade away from having one capable Aircraft carrier that can fight effectively, they have no real Blue Water Navy and a lot of hipe is going on to scare people, their submarines have had so many problems that they have yet to let one go on a armed combat patrol mission. The Communist party in China doesn‘t trust it’s Naval officers with nuclear weapons so let them run around with their boats and scare countries who have no Navy the minute they fire on one of those unarmed fishing vessels China will have a 800 pound Gorilla on it’s back. They can‘t control the air and with US sub’s routinely patroling that area I think China will just try and act tough then head for home.
