China’s Garbage-Fed Beef Problem: Cattle Graze in Landfill Until Slaughter

Chinas Garbage Fed Beef Problem: Cattle Graze in Landfill Until Slaughter

China has another food problem: This time, it‘s cattle that spend their lives snacking on garbage before they’re taken away for slaughter.

According to China Hush, hordes of cattle live in the landfill of Changsha, the capital city of Hunan province in south-central China. They survive on refuse until they’re large enough for their owners to slaughter them.

The cattle reportedly take no notice of landfill workers bulldozing the site, instead constantly scouting for food, including rotten grapefruit skin and old corn.

Their presence is of concern because the germs and mold the cattle are regularly exposed can easily be passed to humans who eat their meat.

But chief among the health concerns are the mercury and other chemicals humans could be ingesting: Chemicals from discarded electronics could seep into the waste products the cattle feed on, contaminating the entire animal and passing it on to the consumer.

Wu Jiacheng, a chemistry professor at National Taiwan Normal University, told NTD TV about some of the dangers.

“There are some bacteria shared by livestock and humans. Cows, sheep, or pigs may eat these things and have no issues, but once they reach the human body, they cause illness,” he said. “For instance, listerial infections can cause death in humans. If a mother is pregnant and is affected by this sort of bacteria, the infant fatality rate can be 100%.”

China’s cruelty towards animals is as bad as the slaughter houses of third world religions that cruelly kill animals under some kooky religious rite.

They’re bring it all right here to the good old US of A too. Some of these Kosher slaughter houses have escaped cruelty charges for years now. It’s really disgusting, because it amounts to no more than satisfying a blood lust by miscreants who pretend to be doing it under their kooky religion.

They do it because they like it. Case closed.

Robert, what world are you living in that you think Kosher slaughter houses are more cruel than non-kosher ones? If anything the animals are treated better.

Are you squeemish because they kill them with a knife? There is nothing cruel in that. Killing is killing. If it isn‘t cruel to kill them with a sledgehammer or shotgun to the head it isn’t cruel to slit their throats.

The regulation of our food industry is largely just for show and for the government to be able to fine companies as a source of income. Privately owned food producers have a far greater interest in not making their customers ill or killing them than the government does. Whenever there is a single incidence of salmonila or some other sort of food poisoning it’s immediately national news, and the companies reputation that’s involved is damaged to the point that it might never recover.

I have a friend who raised some pigs for slaughter on his land. He isn’t a farmer. He’s a lobsterman. Pigs don’t need much room. They will eat just about anything organic. The pork is still good. Marvelous creatures. I’ll ask God in a few decades why he made them unclean. Maybe it was that whole “way of suffering” thing he wanted to teach the Jews by depriving them of bacon.

So I have to wonder: how does the beef taste?

As far as the animal cruelty things goes: Given how the Chinese government treats its people I am not surprised that animals suffer worse.

I think it would be a good thing, and healthier, if we moved away from industrialized meat over here. The prices would go up, but I’m OK with that. We eat way too much meat anyway. It would be nice to improve our diet and our moral treatment of animals. I’m not a PETA guy, meat’s too delicious and God approved, but I hate unnecessary cruelty and there IS a connection between how we treat God’s lesser creatures and how we treat each other, especially the weak amongst us.

I will decide how much meat I eat. Get off the marxist propaganda reading list. Industrialized meat? Are you kidding me? I guess you would rather go back to how it was in the Britain where only the rich ate meat. Most people are not active enough and eat TOO LITTLE protein. Which makes them not satisfied and over eat other crap like carbs. Obviously you never been overseas and seen the effects of the lack of “industrialized meat” in a populace. It’s disgusting…

Lighten up Justjason, you seem not to know much about nutrition.

“Most people are not active enough and eat TOO LITTLE protein.”

Yoiu’re kidding, right? Only radical vegans have a protein deficiency. There is plenty of protein in most people’s diets from dairy and nuts and legumes. The problem is the overabunance of fat and processed sugars.

But i wonder if you know how much government money goes into subsidizing the big beef inustry so that we can have “cheap” meat. For how cheap is it really if we are paying for the subsidy through our taxes?

I’m a free trade capitalist, but I’m not a gfanatixc about it, or a Randian. There does need to be a balance, thgough as a small government conservative a prefer that balance to be as locally implemented and as voluntary as possible.

But would you prefer to have cheap toys for your kids if they came painted with lead paint? Just curious how far YOUR free market policies work.

But here‘s a practical way to move away fom industrial meat factories that doesn’t forbid them: require them to treat the animals humanely and forbid the use of artificial hormones and antibiotics which would go into the meat.

Oh, and this was funny: “I guess you would rather go back to how it was in the Britain where only the rich ate meat.”

When exactly was that? How are we defining “rich”? Is it a circular definition where if you ate meat you were rich, so then only the rich ate meat? C’mon, the rich will ALWAYS be known for having more of things than the “non-rich”. That doesn‘t mean if you aren’t rich you don’t have ANY of these things. the rich can eat more meat, drin more top shelf scotch, drive nicer cars, have more vacations, than those who aren’t rich.

Long before the industrial revolution the poor and the middle class, if you want to talk about classes, were able to eat meat in varying degrees depending on their income and the availability of meat. Over here, where the forests were free the average American could eat better than some royalty in the Middle Ages.

If you want tpo talk about the “disgusting” results of “too little” meat, compare the incidents of cancer and heart disease in Asia with over here. Factor in the difference in age expectancy, which isn’t great, and you might not be so sanguine about how much meat we eat. As for carb craving, as a son of a diabetic I know a bit about that. I also prefer the Atkins diet, so my prescriptions would actually hurt me more than you perhaps. But it isn’t lack of protein that causes the cravings for carbs. It is overabundance of carbs that produces a sugar crash and the insulin rush induces the craving.

I live in Farm Country, My family’s been involved in the beef industry (family farm, marketing, transportation) for generations. WHERE IS THE GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIZING THE BEEF INDUSTRY? All any farmers I’ve ever known (and thats probably millions at this stage of my life and having worked all over several counties to help supplement a farm income.) WOULD ALL AGREE, “ALL THE GOVERNMENT DOES TO THE BEEF INDUSTRY IS SUPPLY OBSTACLES TO OVERCOME! ”
As for getting enough protein in dairy, nuts and legumes, WHERE DO I START? DAIRY IS GREAT AS LONG AS THERE’S NO LACTOSE INTOLERENCE, ASTHMA OR ALLERGIES , OR BREATHING PROBLEMS, (milk makes mucose, a real problem for all the above) AND NUTS ARE MUCH HARDER TO AFFORD IN THE DAILY DIET THAN BEEF OF COMPARABLE PROTEIN VALUE. THE AMERICAN SYSTEM IS NOT COMFORTABLE ON THE AMOUNT OF ALL THE ABOVE IN THE ASIAN DIET, (read this digestive problems aka diarrhea ) Meats will always be the best source of protein!

Isles, I agree, it‘s not remotely shocking to note a country that is willing to sacrifice it’s people on a whim of chance, and play a dangerous cat and mouse game with economics, spending frivolously, and trying their hardest to coax in enough real capitol to cover the eventual catching up of spending money their system doesn’t have on ghost towns. Not to mention lack of known good building codes, toxicity in the water around most towns due to lack of any industrial oversight, that they would be so callous about the beef they grow, at least in some sectors. Has me wondering when they’re so willing to sell us fish polluted with mercury, toys with lead, how much of this meat comes to our own shores, or whether they’re using the meat to help cull their own population. Afterall, they are building a military of the excess men who will never have a wife.

As for nutrition, it’s not so open and shut as I would like it to be. The sugars in our diet are, from my standpoint, far more debilitating, if only because most cells that crave fat will injest sugars first, which cannot satisfy the need for fat production, as most processed sugars are harder to break down than say the sugars in fruits and honey, keeping out fat cells, and forcing them to instead bulk up on fat storage causing all sorts of issues. Too many high density sugars in our breads…in soft drinks, concentrated juices, pre-packaged desserts, etc.

exept a lot of people do. with large food packagers such as nestle and the like use chinese products and list where the food was made, not where it was grown. unless we eat food that doesnt come in a package, we are eating this without knowing.

How many food items reach other countries from China? I recently read that a major dumpling maker in China used shredded newspaper to increase the yield of his products. Time to really start reading labels and avoid Chinese made products

Now you can read the dumplings then eat them. I think my mother in law uses the NY Slimes as a filler in her cooking.

The crsp the US farmer feeds his cattle is really not much better than garbage. Cattle are taken off being grass fed and put on grains. Cattle are not designed to eat grains, so the farmer must shoot them full of antibiotics…Good stuuf huh?

Grass fed beef is the only thing to eat, trust me. Eat grain finished beef and you might as well eat Chinas beef…

Farm marketer Son’s reply,”One of those guys who raise grass fed, and want 5 yr old beef that’s shoe leather tough!”
Grain is a natural to cattle, I was raised with the science that cattle have 7 stomachs, to digest grain fully. Thus the cow chews her “Cud” partly digested food, re-fed from first stomach to assist further digestion. (Never actually counted them but taught this by a veteranarian) Grain fed beef with haylage assist, tend to be ready for slaughter in 13 to 16 months, a grass fed steer, (could be heifer, bulls usually are saved only for breeding, different story!) it will average 5 years, and the beef gets tougher with age. ANTI-BIOTICS ARE USED TO FIGHT DISEASE, WE HAD MUCH LESS PEOPLE GETTING SICK AFTER EATING BEEF WHEN THE FARMERS WERE ALLOWED TO PROPERLY MEDICATE THEIR CATTLE AND COMPLETELY CURE DISEASES! [Animals Do get pneumonia and various other diseases. IF FARMERS CAN'T MEDICATE THEY DIE, AND MEAT PRICES RISE AS SUPPLY DWINDLES!!!]

That’s so mean. But what else do you expect from barbarians who skin animals alive. The poor cows must be so hungry. I think the Chinese have ice in their veins instead of blood.

Is this any better then how we handle our big farming system, they do some pretty nasty things too.

If youve seen Food Inc I highly recommend googling “The world according to Monsanto”, its an eye opener, 100x’s better than Food Inc, and free.

Back during the depression, my grandpa worked in a beef slaughter house. He wouldn’t eat beef. My other grandpa, during the same time, worked in a chicken slaughter house and wouldn’t eat chicken. I wish I could afford to buy grass-fed beef and free range chicken, but I can’t. It’s going to get like solent green….you’ll celebrate over a piece of half-rotted beef.
