Chinas New Stealth Fighter May Use Technology From Downed U.S. Plane

AP

BRUSSELS (AP) — Chinese officials recently unveiled a new, high-tech stealth fighter that could pose a significant threat to American air superiority — and some of its technology, it turns out, may well have come from the U.S. itself.

Balkan military officials and other experts have told The Associated Press that in all probability the Chinese gleaned some of their technological know-how from an American F-117 Nighthawk that was shot down over Serbia in 1999.

Nighthawks were the world’s first stealth fighters, planes that were very hard for radar to detect. But on March 27, 1999, during NATO’s aerial bombing of Serbia in the Kosovo war, a Serbian anti-aircraft missile shot one of the Nighthawks down. The pilot ejected and was rescued.

It was the first time one of the much-touted “invisible” fighters had ever been hit. The Pentagon believed a combination of clever tactics and sheer luck had allowed a Soviet-built SA-3 missile to bring down the jet.

The wreckage was strewn over a wide area of flat farmlands, and civilians collected the parts — some the size of small cars — as souvenirs.

“At the time, our intelligence reports told of Chinese agents crisscrossing the region where the F-117 disintegrated, buying up parts of the plane from local farmers,” says Adm. Davor Domazet-Loso, Croatia’s military chief of staff during the Kosovo war.

“We believe the Chinese used those materials to gain an insight into secret stealth technologies … and to reverse-engineer them,” Domazet-Loso said in a telephone interview.

A senior Serbian military official confirmed that pieces of the wreckage were removed by souvenir collectors, and that some ended up “in the hands of foreign military attaches.”

Efforts to get comment from China’s defense ministry and the Pentagon were unsuccessful.

China’s multi-role stealth fighter — known as the Chengdu J-20 — made its inaugural flight Jan. 11, revealing dramatic progress in the country’s efforts to develop cutting-edge military technologies.

Chinas New Stealth Fighter May Use Technology From Downed U.S. Plane

Although the twin-engine J-20 is at least eight or nine years from entering air force inventory, it could become a rival to America’s top-of-the-line F-22 Raptor, the successor to the Nighthawk and the only stealth fighter currently in service.

China rolled out the J-20 just days before a visit to Beijing by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, leading some analysts to speculate that the timing was intended to demonstrate the growing might of China’s armed forces.

Despite Chinese President Hu Jintao’s high-profile visit to the United States this week, many in Washington see China as an economic threat to the U.S. and worry as well about Beijing’s military might.

Parts of the downed F-117 wreckage — such as the left wing with US Air Force insignia, the cockpit canopy, ejection seat, pilot’s helmet and radio — are exhibited at Belgrade’s aviation museum.

“I don’t know what happened to the rest of the plane,” said Zoran Milicevic, deputy director of the museum. “A lot of delegations visited us in the past, including the Chinese, Russians and Americans … but no one showed any interest in taking any part of the jet.”

Zoran Kusovac, a Rome-based military consultant, said the regime of former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic routinely shared captured Western equipment with its Chinese and Russian allies.

“The destroyed F-117 topped that wish-list for both the Russians and Chinese,” Milicevic said.

Russia’s Sukhoi T-50 prototype stealth fighter made its maiden flight last year and is due to enter service in about four years. It is likely that the Russians also gleaned knowledge of stealth technology from the downed Nighthawk.

The F-117, developed in great secrecy in the 1970s, began service in 1983.

While not completely invisible to radar, its shape and radar-absorbent coating made detection extremely difficult. The radar cross-section was further reduced because the wings’ leading and trailing edges were composed of nonmetallic honeycomb structures that do not reflect radar rays.

Kusovac said insight into this critical technology, and particularly the plane’s secret radiation-absorbent exterior coating, would have significantly enhanced China’s stealth know-how.

Alexander Huang of Taipei’s Tamkang University said the J-20 represented a major step forward for China. He described Domazet-Loso’s claim as “a logical assessment.”

“There is no other stronger source for the origin of the J-20′s stealthy technology,” said Huang, an expert on China’s air force. “The argument the Croatian chief-of-staff makes is legitimate and cannot be ruled out.”

The Chinese are well-known perpetrators of industrial espionage in Western Europe and the United States, where the administration has also been increasingly aggressive in prosecuting cases of Chinese espionage.

Western diplomats have said China maintained an intelligence post in its Belgrade embassy during the Kosovo war. The building was mistakenly struck by U.S. bombers that May, killing three people inside.

“What that means is that the Serbs and Chinese would have been sharing their intelligence,” said Alexander Neill, head of the Asia security program at the Royal United Services Institute, a defense think tank in London. “It’s very likely that they shared the technology they recovered from the F-117, and it’s very plausible that elements of the F-117 got to China.”

Another cover up. Clinton sold our secrets to China, we all know that. It is only a matter of time before we are over taken by China. Unless we get out of debt we are doomed. China owns our debt and soon will own our banks, coporations, wall street and so on. Yes, we have the best military in the world—–now, but unless we start revising our military and making new weapons we are in trouble. China’s army is over 300 million and growing. As China gets richer from our stupidity, they will have the money to make a military that is equal or above ours. They have pretty intelligent people in China. Their education sysytem is top notch. Our education system is controlled by unions and it sucks big time. Our students can’t even compete with the Chinese. We have to get this country back to where it was when we were actually a super power or we lose.

There is nothing good about the Chinese education system, if that was true why are they sending hundreds of thousands a year to US colleges and more every year, the only reason why they can’t send more is our visa policies. Name one innovation or name brand coming out of China? Nothing. The Chinese are nothing more than glorified test takers who spend sun up to sun down 7 days a week memorizing books so they can answer questions on a test. They have no creative skills to innovate, this is why they must rely upon stealing and copying from Western countries. The only reason our country is where it is today is because we have grown lazy as a people and allow traitors to be elected and drive our country into the ground with Progressive policies!

Kickillegalsout- I agree wholeheartedly. I have 3 kids in school and I can’t tell you what a huge fight it is to keep these kids out of the system we have created in our foolish attempt to imitate China/Asia. The kids we graduate from school are glorified test takers and imagination is beaten down or drugged down so that we can robotize our kids. Colleges accept kids who are not capable of critical analysis or creative problem solving. It is so sad. See this movie: “the race to nowhere.” I did, it was very eye opening.

They might also be using technology that B.J.Clinton gave them during his “leveling of the playing field” administration.

Daddy Bush gave China “most favored nation” trading status. Then B.J.Clinton gave them technology that was illegal (at the time) to give them. Baby Bush promoted expanded trade with china. And now we are beginning to see the consequences of being foolish with regard to having such restrictions.

I believe that B.J.Clinton was trying to appease china after bombing their embassy in Kosavo during the war that he started in Serbia.

Daddy Bush was the UN ambassador to china at one time and likely had some favors being called in.

Baby Bush was just that, an immature in foreign diplomacy.

Obama is the worst of all. He is totally ignorant of foreign diplomacy, he doesn’t even understand domestic diplomacy. He is hell bent on ‘gifting’ what ever we have that china wants to them as long as it ‘puts America’ in it’s place (subservient) and redistributes the wealth of our innovation and productivity to them.

And the ones we kicked the crap out of are now pretty good friends. Think about why this is. Might it be that they have been on the receiving end of our wrath and furry and the first two haven’t? The Chinese jet may well be stealthy, but its technology is thirty years old–assuming they copied that downed Nighthawk. We’re on our 5th generation of aircraft, while the rest of the world is still deploying 4th gen. New stuff is conceived if not already on the drawing board. I also wouldn’t be surprised that, when we made the F-117 operational, we also developed detection systems to beat it.

In addition to hardware, we lead in tactics and deployment of forces to counter potential threats. Occasionally we get surprised, but we tend to readily adapt. The mix has been general policy since the 1920s, because of losses during WWI. Americans were so horrified that the military decided to change from a massive force using classical tactics to an increase in lethality of weapons systems and rapid counters to what an enemy has. And to strike hard and fast, to inflict massive losses on an enemy while saving our own troops. The Highway of Death during the Gulf War is a case in point.

What we need to really overcome, more than anything else, is the notion among many in our own government that‘s it’s ‘bad’ or ‘unfair’ the US is the world’s only superpower. It seems more likely to me that defeat in war will be more a result of politics than military inferiority (a la Vietnam).

Some of the technology on the new Chinese jet was taken from the F-117, the rest was obviously stolen over the last 15 or so years in order to built the “Raptor Chow-Mein”, just like the Russians got the plans for our B-1 bomber and recreated it as the Tu-160 “BlackJack”, the Antonov copy of the C-5 Galaxy, and of course their almost exact copy of the Space Shuttle, the “Buran” which was never man-rated. This is strange considering that Bill Clinton was in office, (The Original Manchurian Candidate), and was GIVING, anything and everything to the Chinese, including our Nuclear secrets at Alamagordo, remember the “Chinese Spy” that was discovered and the State Dept. opted out of serious prosecution, not to mention the little restaurant owner from Little Rock who gave the Clintons hundreds of thousands, but his little business didn’t even net 100k in profits for the previous year, the news media were silent on this as well, then move to southern Utah, the coal and land grab that took place by the Dept of the Interior and BLM to prevent the use of this oil rich coal and increase of jobs for the country, so we would not encroach on Chinese coal production, then let’s move to the Left Coast, we have the Naval Ship Yard at Long Beach that was GIVEN to the Chinese to promote the flood of cheap Chinese crap into our country, causing even more manufacturing jobs to be lost, and who knows what else is brought into our country inside of those containers. We have been sold out by EVERY PRESIDENT since Ronald Reagan, and a scant few prior to RR. President Obama made a big point of complaining about pirated software during the Chinese President’s visit. I did not hear anything from the administration about the stealing of American military secrets. “At one point during Khrushchev’s visit, the Soviet Premier boasted to the Agriculture Secretary that Benson’s own grandchildren would live under Communism. Benson replied tartly that he expected to do all in his power to assure that Khrushchev’s and all other grandchildren would live under freedom. The Communist leader then responded in essence, according to Benson’s personal account: “You Americans are so gullible. No, you won’t accept communism outright, but we’ll keep feeding you small doses of socialism until you’ll finally wake up and find you already have communism.” (Soviet Premier of Russia Nikita Khrushchev, 1959). Those who will not learn from History are destined to repeat it. It is time for all good American’s to vote for Politicians that will vote for the United States and not for “Social Justice”.

Those are good points I would add that although I can’t remember which Russian leader said it the saying goes the Capitalists will sell us the rope to hang them with. They were right it’s just that we decided to sell it to another Communist country China. We all are not happy about what we are seeing but unfortunately it may already be to late to over come China economically. That boat has already sailed and now we face a delicate dance with the Chinese , to co exist with them without getting into a military situation. Unlike the Soviet Union which was a economic kludge we always had them beat economically and as it turned out Russia did not have as much military hardware is previously thought they relied on inflatable decoys which gave the appearance of extremely large military foot print. China has us beat economically they own us, they have the largest military in the world and they are not inflatable and they are really just getting started with a blue water navy. The US corporations coupled with treasonous politicians are now to greedy to be of any help to the country. Not many people have herd this but recently bank accounts seized from the Vatican bank revealed large slush funds accounts belonging to Obama his family all the Clintons, Bushes, Chief Justice of the Supreme court and most of the Congress and the Senate. Hiding money in foreign bank suggests they are expecting something bad to happen and will use that money to leave the country or survive a event while the rest of us whither .

They didn’t need to steal all of them – former President Bill Clinton either sold or simply gave them to them. In addition to aviation technology, the Clinton administration sold them submarine propeller technology, nuclear technology, untold mountains of aerospace technology and to top it off, opened a guest technical student program that gave them nearly unrestricted access to research facilities that they raided for even more sensitive technologies – all in the name of global peace.

Clinton never realized that the real “peace dividend” coming out of the west’s victory over Communism at the end of the Cold War, was preace itself. In my view, Clinton did more to damage the United States and the west than any Communist regime ever could have dreamed to. I believe he set the stage for as rapid a fall of the west as possible – all by design.

I agree that the manned F-22 look-alike is not a huge deal.. the metallurgy and finesse in construction is key and UAVs and communication are the future anyway. However, they have purchased or stolen a ton of critical technology over the past 15 years and that, combined with the facts that the west has to hand over manufacturing technology in order to get access to their cheap, huge workforce and that they are graduating over 500,000 engineers each year paints a crystal clear picture for the future. .Oh, and the fact that they have all the money in the world helps, too.

Well, the Chinese have stolen pretty much everything of value from us. They have our stealth technology, computers and pretty much everything they want. Soon, they will only have to steal our secrets about American Idol and Chinese buffet items and they will have absolutely everything.

You mean Ron Brown hadn’t gotten around to that yet?

After Clinton sold the guidance systems, what’s a little stealth?

No great supprise. The U.S. did the same thing with the Russian MIG during Korea to see what we were up against and why it was initally so effective against our fighters. After that, it wasn’t so effective due to our new fighters and revised tactics. The only way to avoid such stealing of technology is to watch for traitors and spies, secure our computers and don’t get shot down/lose weapons. And even that probably won’t be effective since we put all the information on the internet and on the Discovery channel.

The Chinese are raping us for our technology and knowledge and our government does nothing about it! They continue to allow the massive espionage campaigns in our colleges, corporations, military contractors, military, and government by the Chinese! Furthermore we continue to allow them to mass migrate to this country many of whom have no loyalty to our country and come to bleed America dry. We also are now allowing record numbers of Foreign Chinese students to our schools with a 30% increase year on year! Even our own students are starting to get displaced and getting turned away in favor of foreign nationals!

Illegals, Anchor Babies, Mass Foreign Migration, Amnesties, Asylums, Green card lotteries, No Visa enforcement, Marriage fraud
This is an outrage! The Foreign invasion of America needs to end NOW!

      From the article:

“Although the twin-engine J-20 is at least eight or nine years from entering air force inventory, it could become a rival to America’s top-of-the-line F-22 Raptor, the successor to the Nighthawk and the only stealth fighter currently in service.”

The F-22 Raptor project was terminated by Barry. So, in short order we will no longer be assured of air superiority in future conflicts.

What a brilliant military strategic & tactical genius Barry is.

May God have mercy on the USA.

IBM sold the Chinese a complete division of computer technology and we are surprised that they now have technology that rivals the developed world? After that sale they now have the ability to shoot down satellites from ground stations they are now working on landing a man on the moon for their military ambitions to tell the world that they will build an unmanned base for a nuke launch center, what is the highest point of trajectory the moon and depending on the speed they could have something more up their sleeves for doing the moon shot.

I don‘t think it’s as much about stealing as it is the way the Clinton administration shared with the Chinese. If I’m not mistaken, the wreckage should have been recovered or destroyed by any and all means possible. The Clinton’s have always been extremely friendly with the Chinese.

The Chinese will not lend us money to re-build our military. Blood Libeler Democrat Judges would never allow the US to steal Chinese or Russian secrets.

China Doesn’t Have to Sift Threw the Wreckage or Steal from Us!

      Beware the Government/Media/Corporate Complex!

Up until now we have seen a too-cozy relationship between the Democrats and the Media…but little did we realize that it would reach the crescendo we are now seeing! That is China/Obama/GE/NBC/Comcast/Jeff Immelt! It is only going to get worse with Immelt in the government…AND…are you aware that he will be allowed to continue on as the CEO of GE at the same time that he will be in such a position of power with Obama? Can you say “conflict of interest”? Where is the government oversight on this? Shouldn’t someone call for a Congressional Investigation? Amazing…Wake Up America!
