China‘s Supreme Court Plans to Execute ’Food Safety Violators’

China, a nation known for its human rights abuses and strict government control, has a message for food safety violators: If you endanger the public by contaminating or violating the safety of the nation’s food supply, you will be put to death. This harsh new measure runs counter to some of the pledges China’s Supreme Court has made to place more limitations on the use of the death penalty. CNN has more:

In a directive released by the state-run Xinhua news agency over the weekend, the Supreme People’s Court said in cases where people die from food safety violations, convicted suspects should be given the death sentence, while criminals involved in non-lethal cases should face longer prison terms and larger fines.

It also called for harsher punishment for government officials found protecting food safety violators or accepting bribes from them.

“The overall food safety situation is stable and improving, but incidents that still occur regularly have seriously endangered people’s lives and caused strong social reactions,” the directive quoted Wang Shengjun, the country’s top judge, as saying. “Our task to maintain food safety remains challenging.”

According to Amnesty International, China already executes more people annually than all countries combined. While the nation’s secretive nature makes it difficult to determine a definitive number, human rights groups believe the executions stand somewhere in the thousands for last year alone. It should also be noted that many of these criminals were likely put to death for non-violent crimes.

China’s food safety scandals are certainly horrifying, as safety fears leave citizens scared to purchase and consume basic foods. Yet, one wonders what happens if certain crops or products are accidentally contaminated. Will the death penalty become the gold standard for dealing with these issues in China? We‘ll leave you with a clip from NBC News that better explains some of the scandals that have led China’s high court to make what many consider a rash judicial decision:

I wonder how Monsanto, Cargill, Swift, Ibp. Tyson, Smithfield and the rest would feel if WE did that and demanded our food be healthy and the food was raised in a healthy manner as well. Do you know why we have so many with allergies, alzheimer’s, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure? Look at those companies WHO also lobby for open borders to keep their migrant slave labor. They are also the ones that keep the farmers in constant debt.. They also milk the taxpayer into paying for their healthcare. The Death Penalty? They’re killing and sickening millions so why not here.. It’s worse than murder what these multi-national companies are doing! Free trade is one thing, monopolizing and racketeering and extortion is another.

I do not trust China. It is a communist country, and they steal secrets from other nations to advance their agenda. Our attention is or hasn’t been on China because of the middle east. They know this and they are taking advantage of this time to create a super power that eventually will overtake us. Our government is ignoring them, which is what they want , as they build up their military, take our money and our resources, and at the same time make alliances with Iran & Russia.

I think many folks fear the might of China in much the same way we used to view the USSR. True, they have a huge population, and have made huge strides economically in recent years. But if you examine the country closely, you see signs of a nation ripe for implosion. Morally and ethically, they are on another planet from the rest of the world, and it is beginning to catch up with them. This is a truly evil regime and I hope the world wakes up soon and holds them accountable. Just because they hold so much of our debt does not mean we have to pussyfoot around with them politically. If anything, it puts us in the position to get tough with them, if we only would. They can’t afford for us to fail economically.

In communist countries, it is the government that controls all business, including agriculture. So it’s not the farmers, it’s the government creating (or intentionally ignoring) the situation. Instead of summarily executing farmers, why does the government not have FOOD SAFETY Comptrollers? Why do they not educate the farmers? Why, in such a controlled environment can the farmers obtain the poisons? Nothing happens in China without the government’s tactic approval.

Why exactly this country will fail because we are too busy trying to bring each other down, instead of lifting up our fellow citizens. I believe capital punismhment is justified in some cases. But always remember it was God who said “thou shall not kill”. Not if you get paranoid kill everyone who you think might harm you. I don’t own a shotgun, but as a Licensed Homeland Security Officer I’m ok with responsible gun ownership. I clearly see the game terrorist play and its horribly effective as we have let fear and paranoia take away what once made us so great. Chickenlittle, your post interesting: “This is what it’s like under true communism… no ACLU, no ability to “plead to a lesser offense,“ no ”Revs. Sharptons or Jacksons, no 9th circuit appeals court to worry about… just make a damn law and ENFORCE it to the extreme!”

So do you favor the dictatorship in China? No ACLU? Do you want that for the US? 13 people just died in Germany of E. Coli by the way.

But this is a good point to consider. Americans take it for granted that the food they buy and eat is safe to eat and won’t kill you. That’s thanks to the FDA, which is a government agency. That’s thanks to government regulations. That’s thanks to government employees who inspect facilities in the chain from the source of food of whatever kind to the restaurants where you eat or grocery stores where you buy food.

China doesn’t have an equivalent to the FDA. Their solution is to the capitalist motive to make as money as possible regardless of whether people die from their product is to execute them. Ours is government regulations and inspections.

Of course, the US could have neither system. We could use the free market system: if our child or parent dies from eating food from a certain producer of food, or some company in the chain that brings that food to us, well, we just buy food from someone else.

What system do you guys prefer. China’s? Our system? Or a free market system?
