Chinese Immigrants Reportedly Leaving U.S. Because the ‘American Dream is Dead’

Here’s a disturbing fact: “In the past five years, the number of Chinese immigrants to the U.S. has been on the decline, from a peak of 87,307 in 2006 to 70,863 in 2010,” reports The Atlantic.
Why is that?
Some might not like what they have to say.
Winnie Yu, a manager of a Chinatown career center in San Francisco, says that her clients have been leaving in pursuit of “the Chinese Dream.”
“Now the American Dream is broken,” one of her clients told her.
The client, Shen Ming Fa, who immigrated to the U.S. in the Fall of 2010 has “mostly been unemployed, picking up part-time work when he can find it.”
“In China, people live more comfortably: in a big house, with a good job. Life is definitely better there,” he said to Yu, counting out how many people he personally knows that immigrated back to China.
But then why is there an average of 493 mass-protests in China every day due to “a deep-seated unhappiness with abuses of power and officials who see themselves as above the law.”
Some would argue that it is difficult to believe that “life is definitely better there.”
Still, according to the data, there is a decline in immigration and permanent residency on the U.S.
Why? Apparently, it’s because of a lack of jobs and “incentives.”
Many Chinese immigrants who are educated overseas (often referred to as “sea turtles”) return to their home country for the promise of “financial aid, cash bonuses, tax breaks, and housing assistance.”
The Atlantic reports:
In 2008, Shi Yigong, a molecular biologist at Princeton, turned down a prestigious $10 million research grant to return to China and become the dean of life sciences at Beijing’s Tsinghua University. “My postdocs are getting great offers,” says Robert H. Austin, a physics professor at Princeton.
And this recent trend of moving back to China is not exclusive to the educated as “unskilled laborers are going back, too.”
According to the report, smaller Chinatowns have been emptying out for years. The 2010 U.S. census results revealed a steady decline in San Francisco’s Chinatown as well as a 9 percent decrease in Manhattan Chinatown’s population.
The article claims that the rise of China as an economic powerhouse, along with the slowing of immigration, may guarantee the disappearance of U.S. Chinatowns. Indeed, a Chinese economic boom would explain the 14 percent decline in America’s Asian population. They are simply going where there is work and money.
Furthermore, if the rise of the Chinese economy continues, writes The Atlantic’s Bonnie Tsui, “Chinatowns will lose their reason for being, as vital ports of entry for working-class immigrants. These workers will have better things to do than come to America.
However, there is something odd about this whole story. Given the widespread and well-documented discontent among Chinese workers, the aforementioned “financial aid, cash bonuses, tax breaks, and housing assistance” would have to be extraordinarily enticing to lure Chinese immigrants back home.
As reported earlier on The Blaze (via Business Insider), China has been dealing with some rough economic issues of their own. Consider these figures:
- Since 2003, house prices in China have tripled
- There are nearly 500 million who live on less than $2 a day
Not to mention some of these problems:
- Around 140 million farmers have had their land forcibly seized by the government in the past 17 years
- 16,810 Chinese coal miners have died in accidents in the past five years
Moreover, there are numerous reports that China’s elite wealthy, almost 60 percent, intend to migrate from China, with 40 percent claiming that the U.S. was their first choice, according to a report jointly released by the Hurun Report, which also publishes an annual China rich list, and the Bank of China.
“A separate study by U.S.-based Bain & Company and China Merchants Bank in April of 2,600 high-net worth individuals . . . found that about 60 percent of those interviewed had completed immigration applications to other countries or had plans to do so,” reports Asia Times.
Here’s a thought: perhaps Chinese immigrants in America actually believe that conditions are better in Communist China while those who are actually over there, the wealthy “leading better lives,” see conditions for what they are and they are trying to get out as fast as possible.
If this is true, and conditions are indeed bad enough to spark a mass exodus of the wealthy, then who is telling Chinese immigrants in the U.S. that conditions in China are better than in America?

But the expat Chinese can go back to where they came from originally when things don’t quite measure up here. I’ll bet they were proud to call themselves Americans to their friends and family back home. Now that they’ve benefited from the US way of life, their now saying its no longer in THEIR best interests to stay in a country thats having difficult times. I thought the Chinese people were tougher than this but I guess they have truly become weakneed Americans afterall. Going gets tough so its time to bail out. Nice! Take your American education and go back to China, I‘m sure you’ll be welcomed warmly but never come back here again.

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 2:28pmYes, it’s not free trade when they give us cheap junk and they get our factories and jobs. Then they steal our intellectual property with impunity, while our country does nothing to protect it. In fact, I feel the money China “loans” us is actually bribes to government to PROTECT THEIR JOBS, and this can be shown by all the regulations Obama has imposed on our business to keep them from being able to compete with the Chinese. Meanwhile, Obama takes the money the Chinese “loaned” to the government and transfers it to his cronies by calling it “stimulus” or “green energy” loans and grants, then the cronies hold fundraisers and kickback his cut in the form of “campaign” donations. AMERICA WISE UP! Trade is when goods are exchanged, it’s not trade when goods are sold and the money is “loaned to the government, but actually used to bribe the government to screw over Americans in favor of the foreign competitor.

If you have ever watched CSPAN you would have noted that the Republicans had an immigration bill and the Democrats filibustered and would not allow a vote to come to the floor.
I used to watch CSPAN a lot when the Republicans had the majority in both houses during Pres. Bushs’ term in office. The Democrats used most of their time on the floor to critized Pres. Bush and little to do with the bill being debated on the floor.
When the Democrats gained the majority in both houses for the last two years of Pres. Bushs’ term in office it became unbearable to continue watching CSPAN. The Demorat representatives are so full of hate and venom that it is disgusting.
Same thing when trying to get someone confirmed to fill a position. The Democrats would use their time bashing Pres. Bush instead of discussing the merits of the person being nominated for the position. I know because I have listened to more than I could stomach.

One other thought. There needed to be 60 votes for the bill to end debate and send it to the floor for a vote to override a filibuster.
There were only 56 votes to send the bill forward which was not enough.
Same thing with the energy bill that the Republicans tried to move forward. Not sure of the votes but the Democrats filibustered that as well. Their agenda was to block anything that the Republicans attempted to move on just as the either house in power does on legislation that they disagree with.
The political system needs to be fixed first and foremost.

Instead of working for the Good Life we expect the Government to give it to us forgetting we are the Government and it is our tax money they spend like a drunk. I get so mad when some idiot says It’s okay, it is the Government who is paying. As to the fear mongering that “They” will take over America that is a bunch of bull as we are all a mix of races and origins and they have already started to intregrate into our mix. It is the ones in power in our Government who start these fears as they know when they wake up they will have a raging Dragon on their hands and they will be sent packing. I am for legal imigration as I believe they are the salvation of this country as we now have no morals or work ethics. Also they are building new larger and way nicer cities near these cities. I am reminded of the ghost cities that are being built in China the Beck reported on a long time ago. China is building them because they know people will be moving in. They know it is not other Chinese that are going to be moving in but immigrants from other countries including the US. From what I know from my in-laws that work or have worked in certain positions in the Chinese government is to, keep the exchange rate controlled at a predetermined level so that the average middle class American family can live like the upper class, offer high paying jobs to fill these homes. Then after a percentage is hit with incoming of immigration, the Chinese government would adjust the exchange rate to the dollar so that they are near equal to the US.
Now the third world part of China, they still hold on to the communal idea of communities, a modified plan of Mao’s idea. With little or no plan for improvement at this time because it is not worth it yet investment wise to improve. And lots of people are OK with this in China. I said that they are crazy. I was told that since I’m not Chinese that I won’t get it.

I don’t think there is a single thing wrong with acknowledging your heritage. I am an American of Irish descent. My wife is an American of Italian and Polish descent. You state that you are of French, English, Hessian and Native American descent. There is a laundry list of countries that current Americans can call their heritage.
We assimilate into the melting pot. We become hybrids of descent like my wife and you. We become just plain Americans.
There is one glaring difference between you, my family and other immigrants and African Americans. They don’t have a country identity, a common religion, or a common heritage. They only have a racial identity. That difference is significant. It is the difference that prevents us and them from identify them as just plain Americans.

Pretty much this. China is the equivalent of western boomtowns before the US stretched from sea to shining sea. You can get rich quick, but it’s not nearly as comfortable to live there while you do it. The idea is to make your money, then move somewhere better in a few years; but a lot of people will never strike it rich and will be stuck there. Oh well.
Still, I know several of my classmates from university went to China to ride out the boom. Some of them are millionaires now; some of them are stuck teaching English as a second language to the kids from rich families.

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 10:17amWorship in China is not much different than worship in America. The way the atheists & libs want it, you can’t say if you believe X then you should vote for candidate Y instead of candidate Z.
That is the way it is in China. You can worship, but it has to be a generic worship such be good.
If it got down to particulars such as abortion is bad & so you should vote for a certain candidate, it would be considered illegal in China & the U.S. There is no doubt to the veracity of the previous sentence. If a church pastor is said voter for McCain rather than Obama because of the abortion issue the separation of church & state mafia & the libs would be all over that pastor.
No difference between China & USA except a small degree. We can resists a little. After the next election?

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 10:31amI see more Buddhists monks in China over time. Church growth is also up. You can talk about doing good. You just can’t talk about policy. If your belief system lead you to favor certain policies over others you cannot utter a word about it. If you are religious that is.
Same in China as it is in America.

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 7:14amI totally agree with them. The American dream IS broken. You have rampant, flagrant political corruption, the cops protecting that same corruption, you have to have a permit for this, inspection for that, fee here, fee there, lazy welfare goons sucking the life out of the workers, etc, etc. . Yep, they are right. Now, get the hell out of here and go back to China.

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 8:02pmNeoconservative, racist, bigotted people like some of the peole posting on this thread HELPED break America.
That’s why they click their heels when they see minorities who came here for freedom leave. They don’t care. They didn‘t want them here anyway and are glad to see America decline because they think they’ll remain.
Those fools are going down too.
Just look at it. The same type of people who would have stood by and watched slavery (because it wasn’t them in chains) and who fought for slavery to remain are the same type of people yelling “yippee” to the the Asian immigrants leaving, and they’re the same people willing to be groped and molested by TSA for their false sense of security, and they’re the same people who fund the police state overall, and they’re the same people who support warmongers, the same people that some have awakened and are now whining about the TSA treating them like cops have treated minorities in the ghetto for decades.
