Campaign Crashers: Chris Christie Going to Iowa

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he’s not running for president, but he’s still leaving an imprint on the 2012 Republican campaign as a potential kingmaker — and distraction.

The New Jersey governor will visit Iowa on Monday just days after other rumored candidates Jeb Bush and Rick Perry managed to make headlines.

Christie is swooping in to speak at an education conference in Des Moines and headline a political fundraiser for a congressman.

Although Christie has batted away the possibility of a 2012 run at every turn, some of the GOP presidential contenders have sought his advice and support.

“If he feels compelled that he can make a difference, he may endorse a candidate,” said Christie’s senior political adviser, Mike DuHaime.

Christie is inviting national attention at a time when GOP voters have been slow to embrace the field of announced candidates. His visit comes on the same day when two hopefuls, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, were scheduled to campaign in the leadoff caucus state ahead of an August straw poll.

“Any time Christie comes out here, he’s obviously going to take some air out of the room,” said Doug Gross, an influential Iowa Republican who has not committed to a candidate in the 2012 campaign. “He again creates this sense that the current field isn‘t complete or isn’t sufficient.”

The attention on Christie may ebb if Texas Gov. Rick Perry enters the race next month.

But efforts to court Christie have continued this summer even though he has said that his four school-age children and further goals in his first term make a White House bid out of the question.

This past week, Christie met with Home Depot co-founder Kenneth Langone, among the influential economic conservatives who want Christie to run.

In May, a meeting with Christie in Princeton, N.J., that was arranged by a group of Iowa GOP business leaders and donors made headlines as a sign of discontent with the GOP field. Iowa activists are accustomed to being courted in their own state.

The group’s leader, energy company executive Bruce Rastetter, had been impressed by Christie last fall when the New Jersey governor headlined a fundraiser for Terry Branstad’s gubernatorial campaign. Rastetter was Branstad’s top fundraiser in 2010.

Christie agreed during the May meeting to attend the education conference organized by Branstad and to stop in at the fundraiser in West Des Moines for U.S. Rep. Steve King.

It makes sense for Christie to stay in the good graces of Iowa Republicans, should he keep the door open for running for president in 2016, as he has.

The King event is in part out of gratitude for the congressman’s support for Christie at a congressional hearing two years ago, King adviser Chuck Laudner said.

Christie, then the nominee for New Jersey governor, faced pointed questioning at a U.S. House Judiciary subcommittee hearing in the Democratic-controlled House about no-bid contracts he awarded as U.S. attorney in New Jersey. Christie’s star has risen quickly after he defeated a Democratic governor in a Democratic state just a year after Democrat Barack Obama was elected president.

But Christie’s national profile has continued to rise, in part for his frank and sometimes confrontational exchanges with media, captured on video and circulated on the internet by his staff.

He has drawn praise from fiscal hawks and loud complaints from public-sector unions for efforts to trim benefits for public employees as part of steep budget cuts in his first two years in office.

Christie is pursuing education measures aimed at abolishing indefinite tenure for teachers and establishing merit-based pay. Branstad said last week he will propose linking teacher pay raises to classroom performance.

Christie’s approval has begun to slip in public opinion polls from a healthy rating of roughly half of New Jersey voters a year ago to below 50 percent in recent months, while his disapproval has also inched higher to near 50 percent at the same time.

    Pleae, no more Bushes in the White House and maybe not a governor from Texas at this time either. We need a CHANGE–someone people can get excited about…West, Rubio, Christie, and even Palin who is a fighter. They might say these folks don‘t have the experience but what we have now isn’t either so how could it be worse?

      @ Whirled Peas: I think you are mistaken. Having been born in the United States (Yes, Miami, FL, is still part of the United States, though it is often unrecognizable as such…just saying) automatically makes Marco Rubio eligible to be President of the United States. (See the 14th Amendment – “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”) This is also true of Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindall. Had he been born in Cuba and then immigrated here with his parents, you would be correct; however, his birth being recorded in Miami, he is eligible. Now, I‘m personally glad that he’s not pursuing that at this time as his service in the Senate is far more imperative, but that doesn‘t mean that he’s ineligible.

      I don’t think it matters as long as HE was born here. And if anyone wanted to say otherwise bring it on, let’s go ahead and open that can of worms!! After all Obama wouldn‘t qualify either so let’s have that debate! Maybe the court would rule him not eligible, but then they’d have to do the same for Obama!

      Just wanted to answer the post by sicboy. Perry was a cotton farmer…cotton farmers make good money in Texas…made money in real estate and wrote several books. Governors don’t make much money. Our president was a senator and is now a millionaire. As for another presidential candidate from Texas, why not. Are we never to elect another one from Arkansas, Massachusetts, Georgia, California. We need to elect the best qualified candidate no matter where is from.

      Marco Rubio was born in Miami. Parent were Cuban refugees – according to US law at the time – instantly became citizens.

      He is eligible to be president.

    The Republican Party MUST go with a true Reagan Conservative. When the GOP nominates “moderates” we lose every single time. A Bachmann or Cain but not a Romney and I’m not sure about Perry, I‘ve read where he’s a RINO. The nominee MUST use a Constitutional argument to show what America should be again versus this convoluted combination of American Exceptionalism and Marxism. It is unsustainable because the cancer Obama and earlier progressives have done is eating away at everything we have or had.

    Christie has fallen for the Global Warming scenario just by reading a few articles, also there Are No true conservatives in NJ.. Lets just stick with what we know..Christie’s helped with the school problem but any honest person with common sence could do the same. Remember all it takes, Honesty and Common Sence…You want find much of that in Washington..

      most of them over 50 have left, including this one. If Christie was a true conservative he could never have been elected in NJ. NJ has a hugh welfare state and immigrant population as well as a hugh public employee population which makes it nearly impossible for conservatives to win elections…… Christie has challenged the public unions strongly which is his claim to fame.

      I am not sure that Ron Paul could win BUT I would like to see him become Secretary of the Treasury. That would shake up a whole lot of people. Whoever is President is fine as long as they are conservative and follow the Constitution. Their cabinet has to consist of the BEST people available i.e. Christie, Giualiani (security), John Bolton (UN), Rubio, Paul Ryan etc.

    He will be a powerful backer for any Presidential candidate for the Primary Election. He has already said he would back Romney, Pawlenty, Bachmann, etc. He still hasn’t chosen but when he does that will give that candidates a huge boost

      just because you take on Unions does not mean you are not a RINO…Christie is a RINO if you follow the definition but I would take his so called support of Global Farce…remember its politics and sometimes they say things that are not significant…Cain, Bachman and Palin, in my opinion, are TRUE Conservatives and I would take all three of them…but do like Christie as well as Rubio and West if they ran…WEST would be my choice hands down!

      Christie supports the global warming idea and instilled an Islamic Superior Court judge in Jersey and has not denounced the Ground Zero mosque.

    My mind is made up Ron Paul with Gingrich or Cain as VP. I believe Newt would be a great VP, but Herman could be big in garnering the support to win more of the swing vote. But, Christie needs to fix New Jersey I just hope that Delaware could get a real governor. I wish Christie wouldve stayed here after his graduation from UD. What a waste of time and money for him coming here for any schooling i pity the students and parents that send thier kids to this dead end.

      You must be crazy if you want Gingrech to be Pres. or Vice. He voted for Elana Kegan for Supreme Court.. He also is a Rhino. We need Allen West, Palin or Bachman. Rubio would also be a good choice. Forget the others that are running. Ron Paul would also be good, because he is the only one wanting to do something about the Fed Reserve ( whom are the real problem ).

      I’m with you guys. He’s a Scott Brown Republican. Looks like a conservative because he’s in a very liberal state, but in reality he’s just a RINO. As soon as I found out he believed in global warming and that we should do something about it I didn’t need to know any more.

    Even if people like Christie or Perry or Palin decide not to run and even if Ron Paul has no chance to win We NEED to hear their ideas and keep the others on track. We cannot let the media frame the issues. No more debates on CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS or PBS unless we have a moderator like Krauthammer or Shepard Smith (special guest appearance). If you watched the CNN debates you saw the moderator present questions as if there was only ONE reasonable option and that was to maintain the status quo or do some “harebrained conservative thing”. These are false choices. ANYBODY but a liberal, no RINOs either. I would like to see a purge of the Murkowskis, Snowes and Collinses who always find a way to support more spending and give the “cover” of “reasoned thought, bipartison efforts”. As if the other conservative senators are unreasonable whackjobs.

      Well, we were all fooled last go around the Palin/McCain ticket was exactly what Soros wanted he pulled the strings the whole time to make sure he got what he wanted after trying to influence previous elections. You can’t forget that McCain supports Soros written legislation for example the Feingold/McCain bill. McCain should’ve stepped out of public service when he cheated on his wife and family. Atleast, Sen. Ensign has some dignity.

      I agree Cristie has some good moments, but he would not win the primary if he ran, and most tag him as a RINO. Why? if you get time to look it up…

      SUPPORTS REGIONAL GREENHOUSE GAS INITIATIVE
      Believes man made global warming
      Refuses to join the lawsuit to appeal obamacare
      Refuses to end sanctuary cities in New Jersey
      Is against America drilling for oil off OUR SHORES
      Is against building nuclear power plants
      Is for gun control, not as far as the left but it is there.
      Donated money to Planned parenthood
      There is a lot more… But that is NOT the stance of a Republican, at least not a solid Republican, he would never win the beltway or western states.

      Sorry he is GREAT for East coast Republican liberals, but for the majority, nope. He does appear to be a good guy but not to lead us as a nation, He is good for New Jersey.

    I may be the only one not sold on Chris Christi. His stance on coal is definitely concerning. We do not need another anti-coal, green movement President. I would prefer Bachmann, Cain, West, or Palin to be the nominee. However, with that said, I would vote for “Donald Duck”, if he were running as a Repbulican over Obama or any other Democrat. But, I truly want a REAL Conservative to vote for in November 2012 and I don’t want to have to compromise for the “so, so” candidate.

      I agree with you Ashley— I don’t want to have to settle. But with such a broad base on the right, the moderates will win and we’ll end up with someone who is right-center and not full on conservative. That is better than the alternative, but not really satisfactory.

    Chris Christi, Herman Cain, Mitt Romney, ANYBODY but Obama please. The one particular good thing I like about Herman Cain is at least is not a politican. Damn I can not believe politicians anymore. I mean I really need my faith renewed in a few of them because what we have been seeing is absolutely disgraceful and shameful. Does ANYBODY have any guts and balls out there to do the right thing and truly support and defend the United States of America without stealing ? Lord, please help us.       NHAB.. I agree with you. Even the guys I “want” to win, I can’t entirely trust. I wish there were a few out there that did what was the right thing to do because it was the right thing to do and for no other reason. Where is the next George Washington??
