Chris Matthews Likens Romney to ‘Indian’ or ‘Third World’ Computer Techs, Says GOP Is ‘Outsourcing’ Election ‘To a Mormon’

Addressing a poll that revealed a number of Americans in the primary states of Alabama and Mississippi believe President Obama to be a Muslim, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews took the findings as an opportunity to disparage Mitt Romney. For Matthews, Romney is like an Indian (“or somewhere in the Third World”) computer scientist fixing your computer: “you don’t care who is fixing it, just fix the damn computer!”
When asked by host Ed Schultz whether he thought the region was “going to be rough terrain” for Romney, Matthews argued that Americans are “willing to outsource it [the election] to a Mormon.”
He added:
It seems to me if they can win– it’s almost like calling up India or somewhere in the third world to get your computer fixed, you don’t care whose fixing it, just fix the damn computer. They want to get rid of Obama, so they’re willing to vote for a guy they don’t like and probably wouldn’t trust his religion.
He also made a reference to the “three cultists” — who, for Matthews, are those running — two Catholics and a Mormon.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 9:48amAnyone astute enough to see the Mormon as an apostate will also see the Catholic as problematical in the same way. Both religions have deviated from the original church framework set forth in the Bible. Even Ron Paul is reluctant to be as critical of homosexuality as the Bible is critical of homosexuality. Santorum and even Romney might get a pass because they were born into it, but Gingrich is the worst offender by switching to Catholicism. It could be that Gingrich‘s poorer than expected showing reflects some bias as well as Romney’s poorer showing. Because of the “improvements” to Catholicism like the worship of Mary, the infallibility of the Pope, the concept of Purgatory, works salvation and the long history of the church using its power to promote social justice through manipulation of the government, I am not too keen about having my vote seen as approval of the candidates religion. This is the curse of representative government. Democrats don’t have to worry about this since they do not believe in representative government. They believe that the government should follow the dictates of the elite. The passage of the Obabacare bill shows their ideal system working as intended.

@b41sam: It is usually ginned up or blown out of proportion.
Problem for Romney is that he is viewed as a liberal/moderate and many doubt his conservatism. Santorum and Gingrich are viewed as conservative. If Romney thinks he is having trouble because he is a Mormon then he may very well lose the nomination because he will fail to reach out to conservatives and address conservative issues. He should remain focused on the economy, the debt and what is needed to turn this country around. Romney need not play a game of who is more conservative but what he will do if he wins the nomination.
Having endorsements from McCain, Dole, G.H.W. Bush etc. did not bolster anyone’s view of him as a conservative. The Republican establishment endorsement only hurts him with the base of the Republican party. Romney needs to understand that the Republican party leadership is way out of touch with its base.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:57amBoth Mormons and Muslims claim that their religion “fixes” the original intention of God that was hijacked by an apostate church. Both came into being because of a vision of a “prophet.” Both permit and approve of multiple marriages. The main line Mormons deny that but it is still in their doctrines and covenants. Both, especially the Shia flavor of Islam, believe that God speaks to them through modern day prophets or imams. Both believe in the historical Jesus, but both deny that Jesus is a critical central figure in salvation. Both believe that Jesus performed miracles. Both believe that their religion is the only way to salvation and all others are filthy in the sight of God. Both believe the Bible has errors and both Mohammed and Joseph Smith were murdered.

I’m sure you can draw parallels between any two religions, but your statement that “both deny that Jesus is a critical central figure in salvation” is patently false. You can ask any Mormon, and they will tell you that Jesus is THE critical central figure in salvation.
Or, if you think that they are lying to you, just read The Book of Mormon for yourself and you’ll find that “There is no other name given whereby salvation cometh; therefore, I would that ye should take upon you the name of Christ, all you that have entered into the covenant with God that ye should be obedient unto the end of your lives.”

I really don’t understand this prejudice against the Mormon church. It‘s not like they run national campaigns to defame other peoples’ faith, or go out of their way to push political agendas you’re opposed to. As long as they continue to be law-abiding and productive citizens, then let them believe what they want.
And if the opposition has to sink to the level of attacking Romney’s faith in order to scare people into voting for them, then they’ll have already lost on every issue out there that matters to people – decency among them.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 1:14amIt is not a matter of defending Mormonism. Everybody should remember that the Constitution forbids imposing a religious test for federal office. It is a matter of defending Romney against the insinuation that his religion renders him unfit to hold the office of President. It is the same issue that we had with Kennedy in 1960, only there with Catholicism. The one difference between Mormon/Catholic on the one hand and Islam on the other is Sharia, and we have already seen instances in which Muslims appointed as judges have applied Sharia rather than the Constitution. That is not a matter of “religion” per se but one’s ability to follow the Constitution faithfully. I am not arguing that Muslims cannot do so, but only that it is entirely appropriate to vet a candidate on that issue based on the political not the religious issue.

So you think that if Newt wins they won’t talk about his affairs? If Santorum wins they won’t talk about his contraceptives? You need to understand that regardless of who wins, the left will try to distract the issues. So yes, of course they will try to make an issue out of Romney’s religion. However, if you truly believe in the constitutional protections of religion, then you need to stand up against such bigotry, regardless of which religion it is.
The point is, you stated that you would not want to “defend mormonsism.” You need not defend mormonism, but rather simply defend religious liberty; that every American can choose to believe what they will and such beliefs should not be persecuted. If you will not defend a persons right to choose whatever religion they will, then what will you defend?
