Chris Matthews Uses Giffords’ Return to Connect Tea Party to Guns & ‘Violent’ Right Wing

MSNBCs Chris Matthews Mars Gabrille Giffords Return to the House of Representatives by Tying Tea Party to Gun ViolenceThe nation was captivated on Monday when Congresswoman Gabrille Giffords (D-Ariz.) made a surprise trip to Washington, D.C. after miraculously surviving a gun shot to the head earlier this year.

While the rest of the country was celebrating her triumphant return, MSNBC‘s Chris Matthews used it as an opportunity to tie the Tea Party and America’s “right wing” to gun violence.

In the past, Matthews has accused Sarah Palin and other conservatives of wanting more war, he has called the GOP “tribalist“ and ”crazy,” compared Newt Gingrich to a terrorist and he’s attempted to draw similarities between the Tea Party and the Muslim Brotherhood, among other verbal offenses. Now, it seems he’s working to tie conservatives to the horrible incident that unfolded in Tucson, Arizona, earlier this year.

Following some positive words regarding Giffords‘ return from both The Huffington Post’s Howard Fineman and Politico’s Ken Vogel, Matthews took the conversation on a bizarre detour, saying:

It’s also important to remember why she was, why she was coming back. She was shot by a violent act, of course a person using a gun, breaking up a political meeting with a gun, bringing one to a political event which we saw a lot of during the Tea Party demonstrations, people carrying firearms to political events. The violent level of the right-wing in this country, not particularly this case but generally where people feel the need to show firearms at political events, I think that’s a bad development in our history to bring guns to political events. [Emphasis added]

You should come to argue not to show your firearms. And to have now this horrible case of a woman who was shot down in her political act, meeting with her constituents shot, only not dead because of modern medicine and her character and her resilience, that is all part of this story this year, Howard, and I’m not going to forget it.

While he was careful not to definitively place blame for Giffords’ injuries on the Tea Party, Matthews drew an unnecessary correlation between the nation‘s right wing and a violent murderer’s actions. Below, watch the dialogue for yourself:

      This guy defines joke at this point. there was nothing to tie the shooter to the right wing although the fringe media did its hardest to make the connection. As for ppl in public with firearms… well they are invoking their 2nd amend rights. Some of us in other states are having those rights infringed; in CA you can open carry but it has to be unloaded and there are proggies trying to make that an impossibility too!

      I for one am getting tired of hearing the likes of these lib commentaters tearing down conservatives and The Tea Party in particular. Why should we be the target of their lies and innuendos? It’s time to fight back. Let’s start using some of their tactics. One that could be effective is the boycott. Let’s hit their backers where it hurts the most, in the pocketbook. Start with the advertisers on their programs. They did that against Glenn Beck. Cancel subscriptions to the lib leaning newspapers and magazines. That would be a start. This is just a thought on my part. I wish I had the means and nohow to get the ball rolling but I’m just another frustated old man who is watching my country being torn apart. Someone with a lot more smarts than me has got to take the lead.

Tingles thought he’d try another shot at the “Palin, tea partiers, dangerous” routine that failed so miserably the first time with the Tuscon shootings.     When the facts came out, it was revealed that Jarod Loughner was a pot-smoking, flag-burning, communist-reading liberal. It’s amazing how many liberals like to ignore this fact. They believe that if a democrat got shot it must be a Republican or if a cat is dead it must have been the dog that did. The facts are that the Giffords shooting was liberal-on-liberal violence. Giffords isn’t even that liberal anyways. She’s anti-illegal immigrant and pro-border security.

    If more people had guns that the event, the shooter would not be waiting for a trial. He might even have taken a moment to think about how may bullets he would take when he pulled out his gun and decided to live a bit longer.

      Exactly the point I made on another thread related to welcoming Gabby back and Olberman’s need to capitalize on gun control. On the two coasts and in and around Chicago, it is not “normal” to be carrying a gun. But in many rural and open areas it is not only normal but needed for defense against man and beast for self and livestock/pets.

      NOT having a gun at a meeting in the west, parts of the mid-west, Texas and some of south would be the exception rather than the rule.

But, as I tell my Trainees every day (I’m an Air Force Military Training Instructor, or “Drill Sergeant”), do what is RIGHT, always and without hesitation. Integrity and honor are not acts, they are habits. You have to make that concious decision to do them at first, but before you know it, you do it without thinking. Arrest me, detain me, kill me, do what you will with me physically, but if you can look on what you’ve done and KNOW that you did what was right……they can never take that from you. God bless.

    Hey Chris Obama and the Dems get 95% of the black vote so and blacks commit more acts of violence per percentage than any other ethic groups…Obama and the Dems are obvious responsible for all the murders,rapes,robbers and destructions committed by blacks….RIGHT?

      Don’t make that comparison. It is unnecessary and you should not lower yourself to their stupid mentality. The fact is throughout most of our country’s history people have brought their guns to political rallies, people in this country have traditionally been armed in public. A man has the right to defend himself. Trying to equate Loughner to the Tea Party or even the right failed after the shooting took place and is no less ridiculous today. Matthews is just trying to score points, we can see the left is outraged and bitter today. They are full of hate, it is all they know. They try to displace that hate onto us. Whatever…Let the stupid dog bark, the only ones listening to him are other ignorant dogs.

      Even Giffords believed in the right to defend herself, at least based on her statement.

      In a June 26, 2008 message on her congressional Web site, Giffords wrote:

      “As a gun owner, I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. In February, I was proud to sign the Amicus Brief in District of Columbia v. Heller asking the Supreme Court to uphold the lower court ruling that overturned the long standing DC gun ban.

      This is a common sense decision that reaffirms the Constitutional right — and Arizona tradition — of owning firearms. I commend the Court for ruling in favor of restoring our right to bear arms.”

      Gabby is a defender of the 2cd amendment and given her district is very left leaning I believe it is her personal belief and not politically modivated. It’s good to she her smile and doing so well after all the has happened. She a strong woman and wish her and her family the best.
