Christian Publisher Pulls Cancer-Awareness Bible After Planned Parenthood Ties Revealed

A cancer-awareness Bible is being removed from bookshelves at stores around the country. The holy text was scrapped from major retailers’ product roster following revelations that the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a breast cancer-awareness non-profit that was poised to benefit from the book’s sale, has financial connections to Planned Parenthood.
Over the years, Planned Parenthood has been a target among many evangelicals and conservatives, who stand opposed to the organization’s willingness to provide abortions. The Bible was published by B&H Publishing group (a division of LifeWay Christian Resources), which claimed that it would donate $1 from the sale of each book to the Komen Foundation, CNN reports.
Questions about Planned Parenthood’s connection to the foundation have emerged before. The Blaze previously reported that Komen gave more than $500,000 to the organization in 2010. In June 2011, Komen tackled questions about its association with Planned Parenthood in a letter posted on the foundation’s web site. It reads, in part:
The decision to fund any breast health and screening program is based on a thorough assessment of a community’s breast health needs and resources. In some areas of the U.S., our affiliates have determined a Planned Parenthood clinic to be the best or only local place where women can receive breast health care.
In all cases, Komen funding is used exclusively to provide breast cancer programs, including clinical breast exams conducted by trained medical personnel. [...]
Under no circumstances are Komen funds used to fund abortions or other non-breast services, and any service provider shown to violate those rules would be immediately terminated from the Komen grant program.

Screen shot from the LifeWay statement on the controversy
This explanation, though, wasn’t enough to stem criticism. Apparently LifeWay decided to stop selling the books once it realized the connection between Komen and Planned Parenthood. In a statement, the Christian company called the sale of the Bible “a mistake.” The Tenessean has more about the dilemma:
The Bible had been in stores since October. Controversy over it began last week after pro-life websites such as Bound4Life.com and Lifenews.com began complaining.
They cited a report from the Stafford, Va.-based American Life League, which showed that local affiliates of Komen had granted hundreds of thousands of dollars to Planned Parenthood affiliates.
“The sign might as well read, ‘Buy a Bible and support abortion!’ ” wrote Susan Tyrrell of the Bound4Life blog.

“When our leadership discovered the overwhelming concern that some of Komen’s affiliates were giving funds to Planned Parenthood, we began the arduous process of withdrawing this Bible from the market,” wrote LifeWay’s President and CEO Thom S. Rainer.
“Though we have assurances that Komen’s funds are used only for breast cancer screening and awareness, it is not in keeping with LifeWay’s core values to have even an indirect relationship with Planned Parenthood,” he continued.
In October 2011, Komen released an information sheet claiming that there’s no scientific connection between abortion and breast cancer (something that may also cause angst among the pro-life community).
Editor’s Note: This version of the story has been updated to reflect some emerging facts. According to a LifeWay Christian Resources representative, the Bible was never sold in LifeWay Christian Stores. Previously, the AP, CNN, USA Today, WORLD Magazine and The Blaze, among other outlets, wrote that it was carried by the store chain. Instead, the books were sold through mass retailers like Walmart — and were published by B&H Publishing group (a division of LifeWay Christian Resources).

Posted on December 15, 2011 at 1:56pmI am a young breast cancer survivor. My fellow survivors and I cringe every October when “BC awareness” rolls onto the shelves. It is frustrating to see so much pink “awareness” stuff being sold by companies that seek to profit off of our pain. Heck, most of us are trying to move on with our lives and really don‘t want to be reminded of the hell we’ve been through.
Glad Lifeway broke ties with SGK, btw

Posted on December 16, 2011 at 8:13amIt’s about time women started questioning the Komen foundation.
Ladies, this foundation has been giving to Planned Parenthood almost since it’s inception.
I’d also like to point out that the U.S. medical community also claims no link between abortion and breast cancer. Rabidly so.

This is a lucrative industry. Make no mistake.
Even consider waste management: Stericycle.
They have been investigating for dumping the remains of these babies illegally in landfills.
Google: stop Stericycle.
This is America. Chopping up babies and dumping them…and women I’m sorry but breast cancer is no accident.
We must have more children and breast feed them. Waiting til we are in our late 20s-40s is killing us.
Besides, we need to replace our workforce or we will end up like Europe..and with a huge muslim population they are 7 to 1.(tyranny in the wings)
Also the treatment for breast cancer could be causing brain damage as studies suggest. We are having our brains radiated. And consider your chemo treated urine in the municipal water supply.
We are the urban middle ages. We are the medical equivalent of refuse lined mud bog roads.

Posted on December 15, 2011 at 1:47pmI must admit, I don’t research all of the companies I do business with to find out which causes they support. I’m sure if I dug deep enough, I could find something I disagree with about all of them. I think it comes down to weighing the pros and cons. However, when something is brought to my attention I try to reevaluate. I find that a company can use it’s purchasing influence to initiate change in there suppliers (Wal-mart). The same goes for charitable donations.
If we agree that SGK does mostly good work, maybe we can let them know we would donate more if they didn’t contribute to PP.
Then again, if there really is a cure for cancer as Glenn says, then we won’t have to be bombarded with packages with pink ribbons on them for much longer.

Posted on December 15, 2011 at 2:54pmAh yes the modern form of banning a book. Very enlightened and reasonable. I’m sure everyone here knows exactly what all the companies they are buying stuff from is doing with their money. You worry about something as trivial as this, but don’t concern yourself with the lobbyists that are paid for by big corporations to influence or flat out buy politicians. Might surprise most here to find out that most of the regulations are actually lobbied for by big corporations to inhibit competition. What’s lacking in our modern day capitalism is real competition. And most of the regulations that present barriers to entry for startups don’t come from liberals, they come from big corporations and the agencies they control…..

Posted on December 15, 2011 at 12:45pmPlanned Parenthood is an insidious organization with dark roots. They promote “women’s health care” as their cause but abortion is their cash cow. The organization reported over 1 Billion dollars in assets in 2008. I heard a radio ad from them not too long ago which featured a pleasant sounding woman touting all of the “health services” available at PP. Notably absent from her list? abortion. There is growing research that links breast cancer to abortion and the birth control pill. The joke’s on us women who pay the price for buying into the lie. PP makes money while people’s lives are destroyed literally and figuratively.
Abby Johnson’ book “Unplanned” is an honest and fair portrayal of her journey in the PP organization and what led her to finally see the truth of the PP agenda.

However, when you give money to Planned Parenthood for just breast services, it frees up their other donations to be used for abortions.
This is the problem with donating to any organizations who support abortion services. Even churches, like the Methodist church. The head offices financially support abortion services. Even if you stipulate at the local level that your donations be used in a certain way, it still frees up the other monies to be used for abortions.
Just don’t give to those organizations. Unfortunately, I am forced to pay federal taxes and they do support abortion services.

Given their stance against the Komen Foundation, it’s just further reason to avoid them. Planned Parenthood spends 97% of its time and money on women’s health issues other than abortion, it does not spend Komen money or Federal funds on abortion referals or abortion procedures. I guess the 3% outweighs the other 97%, and God forbid that the Komen Foundation would want to inform people that there is no connection between abortions, miscarriage, and breast cancer, it’ better that they should let the Pro-Life people spread rumors.

After an abortion the cells do not revert back to normal. These undifferentiated cells are prone to cancer.

They perform breast exams and give referrals to the facilities who can do mammograms if they think it necessary. Life News admits as much if you click through a couple of links from the article you provided, saying PP responded back with:
“Planned Parenthood doctors and nurses provide more than 800,000 breast cancer screenings annually. We offer breast exams at every one of our family planning health centers. Like the vast majority of primary care physicians and ob-gyns, we refer our patients to other facilities for mammograms when indicated based on a breast exam, age or family history.”
So you are correct in saying that they don’t do the mammograms themselves, but they still perform exams, provide information, and give referrals to facilities with mammogram machines. The implied insinuation, that PP does nothing for cancer prevention, is very false.

Many traveling Life Screening trucks travel around and give very low priced mamograms and other female screenings…some are free.
