Christian College Takes Heat for Firing Gay Soccer Coach

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (The Blaze/AP) — Belmont University has come under fire for forcing out their women’s soccer coach, who her players say was let go for telling them she is expecting a child with her same-sex partner.

Sophomore Brandi Phillips says for Lisa Howe to be gone over something “so wrong is really heartbreaking.”

Music industry executive and major donor Mike Curb wants the private Christian school to rehire Howe and “act like Christians.” Students, including some of Howe’s players, held a three-hour protest Wednesday afternoon pushing for a change allowing for freedom of sexual orientation. In response, university President Dr. Bob Fischer said the university does not discriminate:

In a statement from her attorney, Howe tells The Associated Press she misses her team but the policies and attitudes at Belmont would have to change for both her and her family to feel safe and welcome.

Simple reality check. Being gay, according to Scripture, is an abomination. How can someone continue working at a Christian college while doing that which is considered an abomination? If ya wanna be gay, knock yourself out! But don’t go demanding that Christians roll over and die so you can have your gay way. Mutual respect folks.

To give the school the benefit of the doubt they probably assumed that the students agree with their doctrine and morals. Why would they be there otherwise? I wouldn’t expect the school to be overtly teaching basic morals. At 18 you have to assume that the children have been properly trained. If they haven’t they need to be taught that, regardless of their beliefs, they have to adhere to the code. And in my book public advocacy of immorality is itself a moral, or immoral, act.

Of course, it’s up to the school how much debate on basic moral truths they want to tolerate.

People, stand up for our rights in this country. Do not permit any more erosion of our Constitutional liberties, and repeal all laws that have limited our rights so far. That school is a private institution. Homosexuality violates their belief system and everything they are about, everything they inculcate in the students who VOLUNTARILY attend their school and who know in advance what their standards are. It is a trashing of our most basic liberties to deny private businesses the ability to determine who they hire. We instituted non-discrimination laws years ago to accommodate the fact that blacks were refused jobs, and same goes for women. Although something had to be done to accomplish integrating blacks into white society, it was still problemmatic for our liberties to pass such laws. And it remains problemmatic today that such laws exist, because they are extended and extended and extended ad nauseam to fit every situation anyone can think up.

The school is acting like a christian.1 Timothy 1:9-11 describes exactly the view God has on homosexuality. Can you be more Christian than living according to the contents of the bible? There’s a lot of institutions out there that have compromised their standards in the name of PC, i.e. Notre Dame comes to mind. The erosion of Christian values started in the 3rd century and now some of those “traditions” are considered, of value, when they actually have pagan roots.

Now we’ve taken the slow erosion and turned it into a landslide. The best example of all this is the recently surfaced tagline from the left that “ Jesus was a socialist”. There is so much wrong with that statement I don’t know where to begin. But this is portrayed as socially acceptable and people don’t bother to find out the meaning of being Christian, instead they corrupt it to fit their agenda.

    Sorry, I had to vent.

Don’t be sorry, you are defending the faith. Acceleration toward apostasy combined with all the other signs of the times shows how close to the end we are. Persecution of Christians and Jews is here and these organizations are trying to avoid it by compromising with the world. They had already compromised by their policy to hire homosexuals, and unbelievers. This particular issue was not about that. It was about her attempt to proselytize for homosexuality to the students. They still had a policy similar to don‘t ask don’t tell.

You said, “people don’t bother to find out the meaning of being Christian, instead they corrupt it to fit their agenda.”

That is so true. I have tried to inform some of the commentators here on the Blaze of what the Bible actually says on many subjects. Most do not want to hear it! They prefer to listen to their false stories, traditions, and the so-called wisdom they hear from those who “tickle their ears”.
Because they do not know, or understand what the Bible says, they have no ammunition to counter the evil effectively. I have to admit, I feel like throwing up my hands, no one wants to hear it.

I keep remembering Jeremiah 1:7-8, so I will try to continue.

Granny, a private, Christian school can set whatever standards fit their doctrine, and as long as they don’t take federal money, can enforce the standards that were set forth at the time the coach was hired. I’m sure they had something in their standards that prohibited homosexuality and, whether you like it or not, the coach signed a contract with the school. She apparently breached the contract and the consequence is termination. It’s the law, whether it seems fair to you or not. She would not have been fired at a publicly funded university for the same offense.

I don’t know how long she has coached at the school, but I would think that is something that would become obvious over time. Do they screen students on their applications (heterosexual or gay) or do they take their tuition money and turn a blind eye? I agree with OK…

As Christians, we’re expected to abide by the high standards set by our Christ and His Apostles.

The bible is simple and direct about homosexuality being a sin in at least 10 places off the top of my head.

According to Scripture, this includes cutting off people who will lead the Body of Christ to sin. Mark 9:43-50. Of course, this doesn’t refer to literally cutting off a hand or foot, or plucking out an eye. It’s figurative language saying cut off sinful influences around you. According to scripture, this coach and her lifestyle are a sinful influence. That’s pretty cut-and-dry.

It‘s one thing to be a strip club owner that doesn’t allow blacks into his establishment like the story yesterday. After all, what high moral standard is being upheld there? It’s something totally different to follow scripture (by first attempting to lovingly bring the attention of the sinner to her sin, and correct it) and cut off the sinful influence from the Body of Christ.

I suggest to you that if this Christian College didn’t do what they did, they’re part of the fallen church.

It’s called PROGRESSIVE for a reason and your values have been caught up in their movement. If a CHRISTIAN scholl can’t fire a person for being a Lesbian, then where does it end? It ends only when good people stand up and say NO! It also ends when people like you wake up and see they have fallen in a trap baited with compassion for a person in ACTIVE sin…

I would like to see the 10 ways in which homosexuality is specifically addressed in the good book. Since you mentioned it, I am just curious. The scripture that you cited is vague concerning specifically homosexuals and could be applied to almost anything, so I really don’t think that counts. And, please, do not only cite the old Leviticus line that everyone seems to cite. Have you ever read Leviticus? Funny how we Christians pick and choose the rules that we will apply to life. If we applied the rules in this book as we believe homosexuals should, life in our country would be incredibly different for all of us.

I can’t think of ten specific references in the Bible regarding homosexuality, but here are a few:
      Romans 1:26-27
      1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Why is Leviticus off limits in this study of homosexuality? I’ve read Leviticus many times and have actually found it to be quite revelatory. I‘d say it’s more of a book of worship than even the psalms. I say this because it outlines how the children of Israel were to approach God; but I digress.
Anyway, the above two references come off the top of my head. There are many more references to sexual immorality in general. I suppose those passages show us our Lord’s mind regarding homosexuality as well.
      Hope that helps.

My goodness… is this Cuba? Private companies can hire and fire who they want. This is getting ridiculous that the government needs to step in every time a gay or “minority” is fired! No wonder these companies will not hire these people…you rarely see a caption titled in the MSM “Christian fired from job”. Man oh man, I have come to the realization that our freedom is a farce.

Gays don’t need to be teachers or coaches, we don’t need our children indoctrinated by them.

Gays are not different than Straights – THEY JUST ACT DIFFERENT.

Homosexuality is an ineffective reparative drive to assert one’s gender identity; or, in other words, Gays know they have a gender-based identity, but they fail to assert it properly, though they often try to do so.

To accept the behavior of gays as normal is to deny the each individual their gender-based identity. This is why not only does homosexuality deny someone their true identity, which is destructive to the individual, but also why Straights are disgusted with gay behaviors.

I went to a Christian college for my undergraduate degree and I wish they had the FORTITUDE to fire people like this coach. The place I attended had a “man” that taught there for almost 30 years that had a twisted view of the Bible in that he thought you could be a Christian and be a practicing homosexual and even be a clergy! But the spineless administration closed their eyes to pretend it wasn’t there. They had NO CLUE that Christ taught LOVE the sinner and NOT THE SIN.
Parents send their kids to private Christian colleges to give them a quality education and protect them from, in this example, being exposed to the “gay” lifestyle (btw…I have never met a happy homosexual).
Less than 2% of our population have CHOSEN the homosexual lifestyle…..why the drive to make it seem acceptable??? Because if abhorrent behavior is acceptable then they hope it becomes less vile and more socially acceptable.
      RIGHT ON TO THIS UNIVERSITY!

ENOUGH.. People send their kids to PRIVATE schools not to have to PUT UP with the GOVERNMENT being in their faces as to who they hire/fire and why.. As far as I can see they ARE being GOOD CHRISTIANS they are following their religion.. NO ONE bothers MUSLIM schools.. Why is it they attack CHRISTIAN schools all the time?? This woman knew her actions would be met with her being fired and wanted to collect unemployment.. which will take her till AFTER her baby is born and than some, after which IF she chooses she can apply to PUBLIC Schools where parents either DON‘T CARE or DON’T STAND UP for what is being taught to their kids or the examples that are set..

the coach is probably talented and able to fulfil her job requiremants. Lesbianism in itself is not a firing offense, as long as it is not presented publicly as personal lifestyle. Sort of a “don‘t ask don’t tell” type of thing. When she went public about the pregnancy,. she became openly guilty of violation of holy ordinance. It is the open act that conveys the will to sin. The proclivity itself can be tolerated, if it is not acted upon. The ‘family’ plan of the coach and her partner makes this impossible.
This type of behavior is viewed by the true church as blaphemous and idolatrous. To repent at this point in her relationship, would mean the end of thatrelationship. It would also mean celibacy, untill the time that the coach is joined to a man in holy matrimony.
To some this sounds too strident and strict, but Christians that hold to the truth of the Word of God. know that is the way it is.

Why is that guy still alive? Is there no RULE OF LAW in America?

“If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.” -LEV 20:13

Rev. JOHNSON: “Gentlemen, gentlemen! Allow not hatred to rule the day.”
Rev. JOHNSON [holds up his Bible]: “As your spiritual leader, I implore you to pay heed to this good book and what it has to say!”
[A shotgun blast from the crowd blows it apart]
Rev. JOHNSON [to sheriff Bart]: “Son, you’re on your own.”

Sad when the President used a false argument. One cannot be a gay,or lesbian and be Christian.
And sexual orientation does not triumph over Scripture. The lesbian coach lied for how many years
before she decided to tell the truth. What else did she lie about? God Word is the same yesterday ,today, always. So the fat gay guy is not a Christian and not reasonable.Likewise the Goth Lesbian with the lip ring Ignorant of or not understanding Scripture. And the Veteran would do better to support the students who were not in that rebellion.
