Catholic Group Protests ‘Gay Jesus’ Film & Stage Show: A ‘Blasphemous Homosexual Play’

The new documentary, “Corpus Christi: Playing with Redemption,” follows 108 Productions‘ revival of Terrence McNally’s controversial play “Corpus Christi.” The stage production, which first debuted in New York in in 1998, retells the Christian redemption story, with Jesus Christ being depicted as a gay man living in Texas during the 1950s.

The play’s resurgence is already being met with mass protest, as is the film’s documentation of the revival. The Catholic group America Needs Fatima is spearheading an online petition against both initiatives. As for the stage production, ANF calls it, a “blasphemous homosexual play.” Already, the group has collected more than 13,200 signatures supporting this charge.

The boilerplate protest message that the organization allows interested parties to send out comes with the following subject: “Stop The Blasphemy!” The letter reads:

I strongly protest against the showing of the blasphemous play Corpus Christi, which includes a Christ-like figure who reportedly has sexual relations with his apostles, and of the movie which promotes it, Corpus Christi: Playing With Redemption.

The Person of Jesus Christ is Sacred and untouchable. To portray Him as a homosexual, or even to insinuate it, is an unspeakable blasphemy which I reject with all my soul.

While critics are staunch in their opposition, backers — particularly those behind the production — deny that the play and the film supporting it cross any lines. Instead, proponents maintain that the subject matter is timely and will assist in helping to dispel homophobia and bullying.

“Our tour aims to change the story on religious bullying and homophobia in all ages and walks of life, by teaching our audiences to love themselves for who they are,” James Brandon, the co-founder of 108 Productions and an actor in the play, said in a statement. “As the voices of intolerance around the world continue preaching ignorance and hate, we will keep raising our voices from a place of love — and as our tour continues, we will spread that love to places where love for LGBT people is lacking.”

As the controversy heats up, those behind the projects have no intention of backing down. As SF Weekly has noted, the play caused a major uproar years ago as well. So, controversy, it seems, is par for the course for those promoting “Corpus Christi.”

    I think a more appropriate play for these gays would be to recreate the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah; it would be more realistic and they could really act out their parts with conviction.

These people are using their freedom of expression to explore human nature through a pretty universal story and maybe change a few minds along the way. No one is shoving anything down your throat.       A play critisizing Islam would be unique, but with this one the best thing is to ignore it. Theres a reason it disappeared quickly in the late 90′s, it was awful and no one wanted to see it. Having made the mistake of watching I pity anyone who goes to see it, let alone pays any money to.

      Exactly theo3, these other religions are cults. Gays can’t get over that they are sinners like us. The difference is that they don’t want to repent and put their trust in Jesus. Their lifestyle will lead them straight to hell. Gays because of their lifestyle have a life expectancy 30 year less than a normal straight male. Anyway it is a choice whether choose to be gay or not. It is also a choice between heaven and hell. Repent and trust in Jesus and you will change and go to heaven. The other choice is hell. I pray my gay friends come to Jesus. It is your choice.

      Long story short: in the late 1980s, a group of epidemiologists used statistics that found the average gay man is likely to live 8 to 21 years shorter than the average straight man. Since the 1990s, however, life expectancy has dramatically improved thanks to lower HIV infection rates and drugs to stop the progressions into AIDS; the authors contend the difference would be much lower today (and this article is from 2001).

      So, @Sonofthunder’s facts are 30 years old and exaggerated.

      Its results: Gay men’s life expectancy is 20 years shorter and bisexual men are 8 to 20 years shorter.

      · A 2001 National Center for Health Statistics study on marriage and divorce statistics reported that 66 percent of first marriages last ten years or longer, with fifty percent lasting twenty years or longer.[2]

      · A 2002 U.S. Census Bureau study reported similar results, with 70.7 percent of women married between 1970 and 1974 reaching their tenth anniversary and 57.7 percent staying married for twenty years or longer.[3]

      · In The Sexual Organization of the City, University of Chicago sociologist Edward Laumann argues that “typical gay city inhabitants spend most of their adult lives in ‘transactional’ relationships, or short-term commitments of less than six months.”[5]

      · A study of homosexual men in the Netherlands published in the journal AIDS found that the “duration of steady partnerships” was 1.5 years.[6]

      Are you sure about the first study being from the CDC? It says exactly what the one I linked did; however, it was done by Canadian epidemiologists (not the US CDC), and it’s using data from 30 years ago. The scientists also mention that it doesn’t take into account retrovirals readily available in the 1990s, nor the declining HIV infection rate among gays in the past 20 years.

      The closest I could find to CDC life expectancy for gays was a Life Site News article:

      Note, that the study done in this compared obituaries to AIDS death statistics (available from the CDC), but was done by the president of the Family Research Institute, a strictly pro-religion, anti-gay institution. I can’t find the methodology of this one, but we can compare to another one Dr. Cameron did in 2007 that took Norwegian statistics, extrapolated them to US populations, and confidently concluded that most gay men will be dead by age 46.

      The result of which should should that Dr. Cameron might be just a tiny bit biased (especially considering that even the study using the Canadian statistics said 20 years at most, and Cameron found a 32 year difference).

      Anyway, it‘s all moot if you didn’t mean the FRI study and can give a link to the CDC study you mentioned.

      Jesus said in Matthew 5:17 “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill it.”

      Confirming this fact is the New Testament’s forceful rejection of homosexual behavior as well. In Romans 1, Paul attributes the homosexual desires of some to a refusal to acknowledge and worship God. He says, “For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a base mind and to improper conduct. . . . Though they know God’s decree that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do them but approve those who practice them” (Rom. 1:26–28, 32).

      Elsewhere Paul again warns that homosexual behavior is one of the sins that will deprive one of heaven: “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Cor. 6:9–10, NIV).

      The First Amendments’ Freedom trump the your beliefs in any myths. They have every right to perform the play, and the fact that it makes the fundies go nuts, even better. Rom 1:28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done………Rom 1:32 Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

    Stop supporting Sexual perversion..homosexuality is a perversion plain and simple…it is perverting our gospel see how factual the evidence lies…what part of this do you not understand…Christ died to TAKE sin away not support it.

      You cannot force anyone to be Christian, or live by Christian virtues. That is imposing your choice on others. They have a right to Blaspheme as well. But if you truly believe in God…you needn’t take matters into your hands…you need to place them in his. If you believe he is who you say he is…you do, don’t you?

      Sin has no stopping point. It is like a virus that spreads. There is no cure and death is a result, somewhere, someway. It affects everyone, it causes poverty and strife. What is needed is a return to God because those things are seeping through the cracks are now seeking legitimacy in the eyes of the public. Things that are to come will be worse than our minds want to imagine. Destruction is the ultimate goal of evil. Evil has no boundries and is getting worse as time goes buy. I will be glad when Christ comes again. They all here, just make me want to vomit and I am just a person. It must really be sickening to someone who has no blemish. I do not pretend to understand how it all works, but it must be true. I am seeing it and many more seem to be. The time is drawing near for our redemption. They can kill the body, but not the soul.

      I recongnized that “bullying” was a gay agenda, agenda from the first radio spot I heard it on,. Just like the hate crimes issue that has become law is backed and pushed through our willing government by the gay lobby. and this i Inow from the inside.
