Christian Iraqis Fleeing to Avoid Persecution by Muslims This Christmas

Editor’s note: The Associated Press’s preferred title for this story (which it authored) interestingly “X’d” out the word Christmas:
The Blaze is happy to give the story a new title that puts “Christ” back in Christmas.
IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — They saw their brethren murdered during Mass and then were bombed in their homes as they mourned. Al-Qaida vowed to hunt them down. Now the Christian community of Iraq, almost as old as the religion itself, is sensing a clear message: It is time to leave.
Since the Oct. 31 bloodbath in their Baghdad church, Iraqi Christians have been fleeing Sunni Muslim extremists who view them as nonbelievers and agents of the West. At a time when Christians in various parts of the Muslim world are feeling pressured, Iraqi Christians are approaching their grimmest Christmas since the U.S.-led invasion of 2003 and wondering if they have any future in their native land.
They have suffered repeated violence and harassment since 2003, when the interreligious peace rigidly enforced by Saddam Hussein fell apart. But the attack on Our Lady of Salvation in which 68 people died appears to have been a tipping point that has driven many to flee northward to the Kurdish enclave while seeking asylum in the U.S. and elsewhere.
What seemed different this time was the way the gunmen brazenly barged onto sacred ground, the subsequent targeting of homes by bombers who clearly knew every Christian address, and the Internet posting in which al-Qaida-linked militants took responsibility for the church attack and vowed a campaign of violence against Christians wherever they are.
Ban Daub, 51, narrowly survived the onslaught. She and her nephew were at prayer when they heard explosions. They escaped before five attackers stormed in, but many of their friends did not. A neighbor died clutching his son and daughter in his arms.
Days later a string of bombs went off outside Christian homes across Baghdad. Daub and her family packed a few belongings and headed to a Christian district called Ainkawa in this Kurdish city of Irbil.
“We are afraid for our sons and our children. There is no life in Baghdad for the Christians,” she says.
Since 2003 no Iraqi religious or ethnic group has escaped violence. Tens of thousands died in bombings and street battles between minority Sunnis and the Shiites who supplanted them in power after Saddam Hussein, the longtime dictator, was toppled.
But like many of Iraq’s minorities, Christians do not have political clout or militias.
Even before the church attack, thousands of Christians were fleeing abroad. They are more than a third of the 53,700 Iraqis resettled in the United States since 2007, according to State Department statistics.
Since the church attack, some 1,000 families have fled to the north, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said Friday. It said growing numbers of other Iraqi Christians were arriving in Syria, Jordan and Lebanon and contacting UNHCR for help.
How many Christians remain in this nation of 29 million is not reliably known. A State Department report says Christian leaders estimate 400,000 to 600,000 remain, down from a prewar level as high as 1.4 million by some estimates.
In the Middle East and in Muslim countries beyond, Christians are finding themselves subject to violence and harassment. The Vatican is so worried that it hosted a two-week meeting of Mideast bishops this fall, dedicated to supporting Christian minorities.
In Egypt, at least two people died and more than 150 were arrested last month in clashes between Christians and authorities over the building of a new church. In an ominous sign that militancy is transcending borders, the militants who carried out the Baghdad church siege said they were acting on behalf of two Egyptian women who they claimed were being persecuted by their priests for converting to Islam.
In Pakistan, a Christian woman is under sentence of death for allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad.
In Saudi Arabia, textbooks sometimes contain language intolerant of Christianity as well as other religions besides Sunni Islam, according to the State Department report on religious freedom.
In Malaysia, a court decision last year allowing a Catholic newspaper to refer to God as Allah, the Arabic word for God, sparked a spate of arson and vandalism against Christian churches.
Following the Baghdad church mayhem, some European countries offered asylum to Iraqi Christians. But Younadam Kanna, a Christian member of Iraq’s Parliament, worries that such Western intercession will be seen as discrimination by Iraqi Muslims who wonder why outside countries are so quick to offer assistance to Christians but are often silent when Muslims are attacked in Iraq. This could drive a wedge between Iraq’s Christians and Muslims.
“We are a small community here, and we are trying to resist and stay in our homes,” Kanna said.
More than 600 Christian families fled to the Kurdish area after the church siege, said the Kurdish interior minister, Karim Sinjari. More may have come without registering with authorities.
The Kurds are Muslims who have suffered oppression and discrimination but now have an autonomous, Western-supported homeland in northern Iraq. Iraq’s president, Jalal Talabani, who is a Kurd, has gone so far as to suggest something similar for Iraq’s Christians. Meanwhile the Kurdish government has set up a committee to help the fleeing Christians. Proposals include letting them transfer their government jobs to the Kurdish provinces and allowing students to study in Kurdish colleges and universities.
“They’ve been part of Iraq for years. They are part of the community. They are part of the history. They are part of the culture of this country,” said Sinjari, who heads the committee. He believes Christians who come to Kurdistan are more likely one day to return to their homes than those who leave Iraq.
Ainkawa, the Christian enclave 320 kilometers (200 miles) north of Baghdad, has churches, Christmas trees for sale, and a population that has swelled from 7,500 to 22,000 since 2003, according to Ainkawa Mayor Fahmy Matti.
Christians have been in Iraq since earliest Christian times, and although there are several denominations, their enemies do not discriminate.
The Our Lady of Salvation church is Syrian Catholic, and Miriam Suleiman is Syrian Orthodox, but days after the attack her house was the target of a bomb.
She and her family are renting an apartment in Irbil for $500 a month, her son is on unpaid leave from his government job, and her daughter had to drop out of medical school in Baghdad. Still, they have no desire to go back.
“Maybe there will be peace and stability, but suddenly the situation will deteriorate,” said Suleiman, 61. “We want to go abroad. That is it.”
Matti, the Ainkawa mayor, said that about 70 percent of the Christians who moved there after the church attack came from Baghdad, and others from Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of here.
Mosul is one of the last bastions of Sunni extremists, who sow terror through assassination, targeting Iraqis of all faiths but Christians in particular.
About 10 Christian families from Mosul recently found refuge at St. Matthew’s, a monastery founded in A.D. 374 by a persecuted Christian and now home to a few monks. The families live in the stone rooms, their laundry drying in the courtyard and their kitchen utensils piled on the shelves.
A 23-year-old woman, requesting anonymity for fear of reprisals, said that in Mosul she would try to blend in by keeping her head covered, Muslim-style. She said people would say “Oh, so you are supported by the West because you are Christian. … They say it is not your country. You should leave.”
That is not so easy.
To emigrate, Iraqis need a passport, and must apply for it in their city of residence – in the monastery refugees’ case Mosul, the place from which they fled. A monk at the sanctuary, who for his safety identified himself only as Joseph, said Christians trying to get out often cannot afford hundreds of dollars in bribes to obtain a passport.
Ban Daub and her family fled to neighboring Syria in 2006. In 2008, having been denied asylum and told Baghdad was getting safer, they returned to the capital. A few months later a bomb blast rained glass shards into their bedrooms.
Daub’s nephew, Izz Annan Azziz, said that after he left Baghdad for Irbil, a Muslim friend would call daily, assuring him it was safe to come back.
Then another Christian was killed, and the friend called to say that maybe it was best that he leave Iraq for good.

Posted on December 19, 2010 at 9:33amUntil the so called “moderate Muslims” speak up en masse against the slaughter of innocents around the world, I believe they are all complicit and guilty of the same crimes. 90% of 1.5 billion is 1.35 billion. Where are they? Reminds me of the silence of the “moderate” German people back in 1935 after Krystalnaucht ( spelling?) But by then, they were too afraid to speak out. Our “tolerant” friends on this web page who fail to recognize the true threat and insidious nature of this “ religion of peace ” will find themselves in the same predicament. It is only a matter of time. Even so, come Lord Jesus.

Posted on December 19, 2010 at 8:22amI didn’t used to feel about the muslims the way I do now, but after so much of this violence just because we don’t believe the way they do, I don’t care for any of them anymore. When you see ones that have been born and raised here turn on this country and it’s people and set off bombs to kill us as well as all of the other things many of them are doing, I just don’t like muslims period now. You may have one for a neighbor who later goes out and sets off a bomb at some time. Just no way of knowing for sure. Their Sharia law and treatment of women is EVIL!

Posted on December 19, 2010 at 7:21amAnother great article.
The Christians are persecuted wherever this totalitarian system of government called Islam raises it’s ugly head.
Did you know that the Islamists took over Persia, which they then renamed Iran? The original people of Iran aka Persia were Zoroastrians. They took over the same way as they take over every country that they immigrate to. Through violence, Sharia and Jihad. It is the same in Egypt. The orginal people of Egypt were the Copts who are Christians. They were taken over by the Islamists through violence and persecution, so that now they are the minority. The Copts are still being persecuted and they are considered second class citizens in their own country, and treated as such. They are not allowed to get good job, or to build Churches.
This is happening in Turkey right now as we speak. Turkey is changing from a secular nation to an Islamic one. Women are now required to wear the scarf to get a government position and the Secularists and Christians are being persecuted. It won’t be long now before Turkey will partner with Iran, just as Iran is partnering with Venezuela and digging for uranium there.
The corrupt UN is turning a blind eye to all of this because they have been taken over by the Islamists there. They are now seeking to name Israel as the war criminal, while turning a blind eye to all of the Islamist’s worldwide terror. This is why we must seek to demand that our representatives in Congress no longer fund this corrupt body of thug-leaders.
It is coming here to America in the form of creeping Sharia and Jihad, financed by the Saudis and the Muslim Brotherhood and it’s paid tentacle CAIR. They seek to shut us up through their Sharia in the form of “political correctness.” It’s the way they worm their way in and get their “special treatment.”
You must read this article about the “useful idiots.” Here‘s an excerpt and I’ll post a link to the entire article below so you can read it in it’s entirety. Amil comes from Iran. He left after the revolution where the fundamentalists took over by force.
~
Islam enjoys a large and influential ally among the non-Muslims: A new generation of “Useful Idiots,” the sort of people Lenin identified living in liberal democracies who furthered the work of communism. This new generation of Useful Idiots also live in liberal democracies, but serves the cause of Islamofascism—another virulent form of totalitarian ideology.
Useful Idiots are naïve, they are foolish, they are ignorant of facts, they are unrealistically idealistic, they are dreamers and they are willfully in denial or deceptive. They hail from the ranks of the chronically unhappy. They are anarchists, they are aspiring revolutionaries, they are neurotics who are at war with life, the disaffected alienated from government, corporations, and just about any and all institutions of society. The Useful Idiot can be a billionaire, a movie star, an academe of renown, a politician, or from any other segment of the population. Arguably, the most dangerous variant of the Useful Idiot is the “Politically Correct.” He is the master practitioner of euphemism, hedging, doubletalk, and outright deception.
The Useful Idiot derives satisfaction from being anti-establishment. He finds perverse gratification in aiding the forces that aim to dismantle an existing order, whatever it may be: an order he neither approves of nor feels he belongs to.
The Useful Idiot is conflicted and dishonest. He fails to look inside himself and discover the causes of his own problems and unhappiness while he readily enlists himself in causes that validate his distorted perception.
Understandably, it is easier to blame others and the outside world than to examine oneself with an eye to self-discovery and self-improvement. Furthermore, criticizing and complaining—liberal practices of the Useful Idiot—require little talent and energy. The Useful Idiot is a great armchair philosopher and “Monday Morning Quarterback.”
The Useful Idiot is not the same as a person who honestly has a different point of view. A society without honest and open differences of views is a dead society. Critical, different and fresh ideas are the life blood of a living society—the very anathema of autocracies where the official position is sacrosanct.
Even a “normal” person spends a great deal more energy aiming to fix things out there than working to overcome his own flaws and shortcomings, or contribute positively to the larger society. People don’t like to take stock of what they are doing or not doing that is responsible for the conditions of which they disapprove.
But the Useful Idiot takes things much farther. The Useful Idiot, among other things, is a master practitioner of scapegoating. He assigns blame to others while absolving himself of responsibility, has a long handy list of candidates for blaming anything and everything, and by living a distorted life, he contributes to the ills of society.
The Useful Idiot may even engage in willful misinformation and deception when it suits him. Terms such as “Political Islam,” or “Radical Islam,” for instance, are contributions of the Useful Idiot. These terms do not even exist in the native parlance of Islam, simply because they are redundant. Islam, by its very nature and according to its charter—the Quran—is a radical political movement. It is the Useful Idiot who sanitizes Islam and misguides the populace by saying that the “real Islam” constitutes the main body of the religion; and, that this main body is non-political and moderate.
Regrettably, a large segment of the population goes along with these nonsensical euphemisms depicting Islam because it prefers to believe them. It is less threatening to believe that only a hijacked small segment of Islam is radical or politically driven and that the main body of Islam is indeed moderate and non-political.
But Islam is political to the core. In Islam the mosque and State are one and the same—the mosque is the State. This arrangement goes back to the days of Muhammad himself. Islam is also radical in the extreme. Even the “moderate” Islam is radical in its beliefs as well as its deeds. Muslims believe that all non-Muslims, bar none, are hellfire bound and well-deserve being maltreated compared to believers.
No radical barbaric act of depravity is unthinkable for Muslims in dealing with others. They have destroyed precious statues of Buddha, leveled sacred monuments of other religions, and bulldozed the cemeteries of non-Muslims—a few examples of their utter extreme contempt toward others.
Muslims are radical even in their intrafaith dealings. Various sects and sub-sects pronounce other sects and sub-sects as heretics worthy of death; women are treated as chattel, deprived of many rights; hands are chopped for stealing even a loaf of bread; sexual violation is punished by stoning, and much much more. These are standard day-to-day ways of the mainstream “moderate” Muslims living under the stone-age laws of Sharia.

One friend, here for 30 years, moved to USA with his family because his Muslim neighbors, people he grew up with and was friends, people who had been to his family’s home, one day they decided to massacre their Christian neighbors.
Muslims like to do this because it is commanded in the Koran. “Slay the unbelievers wherever you find them” When they have the “upper hand”, jihad by violence is mandatory. Islam ruins every land where they gain power, Mesopotamia (Iraq) being one of the first.

Learn about original Christianity, before Constantine got his hands on it and perverted it. The infinite “unending-neverending” Elohim (one word for God in Hebrew) cannot be contained in a human body. We are all children of God as God created all matter in this universe and we are all part of that creation.

That is BS. In Deuteronomy, when Israelites were commanded to kill, it was time-specific and people-specific, because the people they killed conducted child-sacrifice and other practices of Baal Worship. they were always given the chance to change their ways, but they couldn’t, much like Jihadi Muslims today.
Although Christianity has been violent, that violence runs against the teachings of Jesus. In Islam, the violence is a RESULT of the teachings. A major difference between Christianity and Islam.
Also the Crusades were a response to Islamic invasion of Europe. Look up Charles Martel and the Battle of Poiters in 732.
Baal Worship (Islam is its descendant), with its cult of violence and domination began about 3000 BCE at Baalbek (megalithic platform structure) in Lebanon. The Canaanites, who due to climate change from a meteor in 3123 BCE, http://www.marcrubin.com/noah-index.ivnu had moved from their alloted region in southern Turkey, built an altar on top of the Pre-Flood structure and began sacrificing children and other kinds of bad behavior You wouldn’t want them for your neighbors.
The Romans were Hamites, just like the Canaanites. They stole and claimed ownership. Basic Italian architecture, their way of building homes, comes from the Eutruscans, who settled the Italian coast before the later arriving Hamite-Romans killed them. Mesopotamians invented the arch. Not the Romans. That is another lie of history. The Temple in Jerusalem had arches as did Ninevah and Susa (first city in Persia).

Both the verse just before and the verse right after make it clear that it’s people within their fledgling community who are to be held to these standards–not the people surrounding them. Posted on December 19, 2010 at 6:24amNo thanks! After knowing in my neighborhood muhammed attah lived down the street from me along with some of the other lesser known, but important members of this notorious, peaceful group of islam loving people (sarcasm), I have no desire to get to know them.
They show no desire to get to know us! The muslims living near me keep their shades drawn, CONSTANTLY, the woman of the house is RARELY seen, the children do not wave, smile, the older boys will not make eye contact, etc. when I pass by. They do not speak English. The women do not wear western clothes. So, seems to me they do not want to assimilate, but our town just held a ‘meet and greet’ at our local libary to ‘get to know our muslim neighbors’?! No thanks. Especially after what I’m seeing with the underwear bomber, Ft. Hood muslim murderer, Times Square bomber and most recent Washington State’s near miss of their peaceful, muslim murdering bomber at their town Christmas celebration!
Yeah, that’s right, get out to get to know them! NOT!

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 11:29pmI belong to ‘Voice of the Martyrs’ and if my faulty memory serves me correctly muslims murder well over 200,000 Christians every year. I know the yearly average total of Christian martyrs is around 260,000 including the ones killed by communist countries like China. So perhaps islam is responsible for less than 200,000. I do know that VOM says that muslims kill the vast majority of them. When you‘re peacefully murdering that many people each year it’s probably hard to keep an accurate count.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 11:25pmThese “peaceful muslim people” are taught to kill infidels, which includes anyone who is not muslim. They are targeting & killing Christians all over the world. It’s time to put the politically correct lies to rest & scream the truth as loud as we can. Stand strong & do not let sharia law be allowed anywhere in this country. Our government officials (to include activists judges) better listen to us. We don’t want this here. There are more of us than there are of them. Can they hear us now?!

My prayers are with my brothers and sisters in Christ and I think it only makes American Chrisians look stupid and shallow mistakenly fussing over a Christian symbol when our fellow believers are being slaughtered.

Posted on December 19, 2010 at 3:31amsame with the fish design……….way back when Christians were being persecuted in rome , it was used as a meeting signal to be able to recognize each other…………one person would use his foot and draw a half circle on the dirt, and the other person if he was Christian would finish the symbol creating a “fish”
persecution of Christians has persevered throughout the ages , and will continue until his return

Posted on December 19, 2010 at 5:18amThank you MarathonMark. I was going to point this out myself. X is the Greek for Chi and was used for Christ. That‘s why when people abbreviate it it’s Xmas, not Zmas or Qmas. If you must be offended, be offended by things that completely change the holiday like that super low-IQ show that celebrates “Crimbus”.
Xtians or XPians are also considered acceptable ways to abbreviate Christian (XP being Chi Rho… follower of Christ… which makes me want to keep Windows XP even more… lol).
Maybe instead of getting offended, people should research this stuff first (here, do your homework: http://hotword.dictionary.com/xmas-christogram/) so you’re armed with truth so you can put lies to rest by educating others. Sure ‘not others will know that’ so looks like it’s up to you to help educate them.
Frankly I’m a little put off by The Blaze for pulling the whole *gasp* they put Xmas instead of Christmas! *gasp* routine. Sure, the original author might have been doing it to try to ‘offend’ but the joke’s really on them for being so ignorant, now, isn’t it?

Posted on December 19, 2010 at 1:09pmGiven what MarathonMark and VIE_EN_RAS have posted and, many of us “old timers’“ believe that the ”X” was inappropriate representation for Christ; If the Liberals/Progressive find this out, it will undoubtedly infuriate them to no end — They didn’t take Christ out of Christmas(Xmas) after all.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 11:14pmUnfortunately Christian persecution appears to be on the rise everywhere in the middle east. Even in Iraq not considered a muslim country. I’m sure Iran is behind much of this or fueling the flames. Persecution in our country appears to be on the rise also. We must be vigilent and continue to stand up because I think the progressives would like nothing better than to destroy Christianiy in the U.S. We are the main roadblock to their Socialist agenda. Another sign that we may be entering the last days as foretold.

Posted on December 19, 2010 at 12:53pmThere are the signs Jesus spoke of and the persecution for his name sake. They are coming on us like birth pangs. The tempo increasing! Muslims where is your religious tolerance for those not of your belief. Is only tolerance for your faith a must for everyone else to follow, can you not extend an olive branch to those who do not cause you any harm and have lived among your peoples for hundreds of years in peace. It seems you want to murder them where they are praying and execute them where you find them. Atleast let them leave in peace. God is watching!

Posted on December 19, 2010 at 7:27pmYes, it is happening as it was foretold in the bible. Especially if it is recognized that Allah is the beast of Revelation. This cancer is spreading very fast because it is Satanically empowered, and because the world is ripe for judgment. Christians are taught to not stop confessing Christ, and to endure to the end. There will be many true martyrs. Jesus is coming soon.
Men worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?” Revelation 13:4

See there’s a protest! Wait, thats for the right to wear a head scarf at work in Disneyland. Wait, over there!!! No, thats a protest not wanting to have their headscarf patted down. No, over there!!! Nope, thats a protest wanting to wear headscarfs in a drivers license photo..
Seems the headscarf is more important to some then then having their entire religion hi-jacked by extremist?
Maybe that’s the tolerance they speak of?

I think the point should be made that it doesn’t matter if you are Christian or not, ALOT of Muslims around the world are killing people in the name of their religion. Doesn’t that trouble you? Also, what about the shooting by the Muslim officer at a Texas base this last year? He killed people in the name of his religion: ISLAM! I don’t care much for those who would defend such a religion by saying not all Muslims are that way…so what a whole hell of a lot of them are! Wake up!
