Christian Launches ‘Occupy the Altar’ to Ask for God’s Economic Intervention

It seems these days people are Occupying practically everything. Cities around America — and across the world — are taking to their makeshift camp sites and rallying to push for a more equitable world (though some feel the protesters haven’t really outlined how they plan to accomplish this feat). And now, joining in on these efforts are some Christians who want nothing more than to “Occupy the Altar.”

But before you make any assumptions, it should be noted that this movement is a bit different. Rather than blaming Wall Street for America’s financial woes, adherents to this new-found, Jesus-centric rallying cry believe that the nation’s issues are more spiritual than they are financial.

Take, for instance, John Stefanski. He’s encouraging people to come together and to turn to prayer. “Let’s pray to the Lord for our problems,” he says. “Society is in the bind that it is because we got away from ‘one nation under God.’”

See, Stefanski, a small business owner from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, wants to get his new movement — Occupy the Altar — off the ground embraced by Christian communities. Rather than camping out in the town square in support of Occupy Nashville (which he claims he’s not against), he‘s hoping to encourage churchgoers to rally in downtown Nashville in an effort to seek God’s help in solving the U.S. economic crisis.

So far, though, Stefanski’s movement only has two members: Himself and his friend, Tyler Parcha. This week, the pair has spent hours down at Nashville’s Legislative Plaza (where Occupy Nashville protesters are also converging), holding up signs that tout various Bible verses, along with the words “Occupy the Altar.”

One sign references Romans 12:1-2, which reads,  “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy…do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

When asked how he got the idea for the new Occupy offshoot, he said that coverage of the Occupy Nashville protests drove his interest. “I’ve been watching the TV and seeing all the people talking about all occupy this and occupy that,” Stefanski said. “I had a strong conviction from the Lord that we need to come together as a country and occupy the altar.”

Now, the only question that remains is: Will more Christians join him?

    I think we actually got away from “One Nation under God” even before we elected the Antichrist.
    As for these Occupiers, I wish they would just go and occupy a shower. I know they’re the same crowd that thinks health care should be free and that doctors should get paid the same as janitors, but when we wind up with a cholera outbreak, they’ll be whining.

      I agree. God doesn’t need your product, what ever it is. So, he won’t be spending any of his reserves. IMHBLO, God would say get out there and create a good economy. After all, consumers are 65 – 70% of general economic activity. But here’s the sticky wicket, as it were, and there is really no way of getting around this, government fancies itself as the progenitor of all economic activity. And in that vein spasmodically and violently wedges and jimmies the levers of free economic enterprise and development with a mafioso like bias for and just as large an incompetence at, control over everything.

      This mucks up the whole thing. And government knows it. There is no rebuilding economic foundations if we can’t see solid ground upon which to begin construction. obama knows this, because his ‘jobs’ stimulus has run its course and the reviews are in. Governments one thing it ALWAYS gets right? Incompetence. 100% of the time. Things go “right” at the government about as often as they go bad for the average person. 1 out of 10 or so.

      When the church can get its own business right, then I’ll concern myself with whether or not I want to be associated with a Jeremiah Wright style of communist subversive. Until then, I’ll take my religion ala carte from my politics.

      I don‘t know these people on Wall Street with the scripture signs are in God’s church but I do know the only thing that is holding things even partially things together now is God’s church on earth, when Jesus returns for the Church, wouldn’t wanna be on earth anywhere, because God will withdraw His Holy Spirit, the Church and the anti-christ will be have free reign on earth for a season called the Great Tribulation. That is the anti-christ will have some control until God and the Church returns to watches Jesus throw the devil and his followers in the bottomless pit. That’s not delusional, that’s the future ad truth, don‘t know when but know it’s coming! Have faith in God!

      Mitt Romney is the one person in the race who has spent his lifetime turning hopeless financial situations around and he is custom made for the economic problems our nation and world face today. Mitt is the only one who will be able to get the things done that he is proposing. His 59 point plan is very realistic and Mitt has a track record of getting what he promises passed. He just signed the first pledge of the campaign and that is Jim Demint’s Cut, Cap and Balance pledge. Mitt does not take these pledges lightly and anything he promises or says he will do it will get done. Washington DC is very dug in against conservative change and someone inexperienced like Cain will not be taken serious or does not have the expertise to get his agenda passed and Ron Paul’s record of getting his bills passed is dismal. Mitt was able to accomplish a lot of what he set out to accomplish in a state where he was up against 80% of the opposing party. If he could succeed against that he will surely be able to work with a majority GOP in House and possible even in the Senate when he takes over.

      We should all stay away from religion especially Jeremiah Wright theology.however ala carte politics from Christianity is no Christianity at all. When it comes to abortion, according to God’s Word, we must speak against murder and speak life, when it comes to any other marriage except the type marraige that God ordained we must speak truth. There are many things that cross the political line that calls the Christian to speak truth. To remain silent about such things is the sin of omission.and in one passage in Romans 1:23 -36, the Bible implies that people who approves of certain type sins, even though they aren’t engaged in them are just as guilty as the people doing the sin by their silence or approving. Defining what sin is and making people being aware of their sinfulness is what draws sinners to the cross for forgiveness,through the Holy SPirit’s power, without that no one could be saved. As the Bible teaches,the law is a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ!

    We’ve been spending too much time debating one another and trying to find worldly solutions to our worldly problems. Obviously what we need to do is talk to invisible people because they have magic powers that none of us possess, and if we can convince them that we love them enough, they will use their magic to solve our economic problems.

    Ron Paul doesn’t surprise me on any vote when it comes to God and Christianity, his silence on Christianity is enough to reveal where his heart is and has always been. He says it‘s a personal thing and it is personal but that doesn’t mean we are to be silent about the God who has saved us from hell if he truly has saved us personally. If he hasn’t we will probably remain silent! Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks the Bible says!

      Give Ron Paul a break. If you’re so anxious to hear about God from a politician, just sit tight. The godless Marxists will be pulling out every stop and using every reference to God, Mom, apple pie, the flag, and whatever else they can think of in the next election. Don’t be fooled. Go to YouTube and see what you can find that is the man himself speaking on religion before you automatically put him down for not leading with his religion the way some do… At least he doesn’t skip “under God” when he pledges allegiance to our flag the way the President, Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton do.

    Too many Christians are hung up on the false promise of economic prosperity. They have fallen for a false god (mammon). Instead of praying for economic prosperity we should be humbling ourselves and praying for forgiveness. We have become arrogant in assuming that God desires our country to remain a world power. Maybe God has other plans for us. The point is, we as individuals must seek Him, not as a collective.

      I just wanted to add Killing of innocents both young AND old You just wait, Obamacare will kill off anyone who becomes “unproductive”, making them wait for cancer treatment, or heart surgery until they up and die waiting. Get ready – its coming. In fact it already has started/ Abbott-Northwestern hospital could have cared less about my 89 year old father. He had been going to the doctor for a year with stomach pain and sickness, and when they fiinally get around to approving a test to see what is going on, they find advanced cancer. He had a tumor so big it was the size of a grapefruit sticking out of his stomach. Every time he would go to the doctor, they would take a “wait and monitor” approach. The fricking doctor (an oncologist at the hosptial) had the balls after they found the can to say to my Dad, “You know we could operate and it would give you some comfort, but……….you know”. If I had not been sitting right there when he said that, I would not have believed it. Then this doctor, knowing my father has advanced cancer, is sick to his stomach, and in pain, approves him for 1 Vicodin – oh wait….I guess he was approved for two horsepill Vicodin, but the nurse decided just to give him one and than come back in an hour to check his pain level again. My father died 7 days later at a wonderful hospice in Minneapolis called Our Lady of Good Counsel. I thank God everyday that my Dad didn’t have to die in that God-forsaken hospital

    I know this is a little off topic, but have any of my fellow Blazer’s seen this headline?
    Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) said Thursday he opposes the Republican measure that seeks to reaffirms the country’s “In God We Trust” motto.
    Although Ron Paul isn’t my candidate, I had at least respected the man to this point. I do not believe in collective salvation. However, I do believe that we, as a nation, need to humble ourselves before God , if we are to survive. Honoring, “IN GOD WE TRUST” is a step in this direction, in my humble opinion.

      You know the only reason the congress passed this vote is because they know we are not happy with them and this is an election year. We already have the motto on our fiat money. Where else is this used? It was a political move. Why can’t they pass some job and economy bills? When we are having to barter to live are we going to put the motto on our chickens? If something is not done soon we will be bartering for needs. Dr Ron Paul was not even there for the vote. Dr. Paul said he didn’t think the resolution was necessary, saying he wouldn’t have brought it up. “I would have voted ‘no’ not because I don‘t like the motto and don’t think we can use it but ‘no’ because we were telling the states what to do,” Paul told The Hill newspaper.

      In order to bring the Lord praise and glory, men will have to repent of the “traditions and doctrines of man” that they teach in organized religion. Even the concept of “altar” is an old covenant temple worship aspect. Going to the front to the altar in churches is not even recognized by Jesus as He is the temple and so are his people. The system of organized religion is powerless. God is only going to work through those who are truly HIs, His holy remnant. There will be a restoration of all things for the body of Christ and he will use those whom He has chosen, not those who have man ordained certificates calling themselves “pastor or teacher”. Actually, God is disgusted with the system of organized religion and he is going to allow it to burn down with the economy. God will use men and women that He ordains. No longer is he going to put up with those who lie and twist the word of God and preach tithing and other doctrines that make the word of God of none effect. The persecution is going to get so hot that only those who are truly His will make it. Their trust will be in Him alone and only Him.

    The altar is a wonderful place but I am a little leary of this man using “occupy the altar” which gives electricity to a dark movement that is violent, evil and destructive…God wants our hearts, our lives and not the government being lifted us as an idol of worship! You can give your heart anywhere and occupying an altar will not make hill of beans difference if there is not a yielding to God.

    The free market system doesn’t care who you are or who you worship, the only requirement is peaceful honest trade between consenting parties. Nothing more. You can find quite robust, honest and peaceful markets in any given country that isn’t regulated into chains.

    The reason we’re where we are now is because dishonest people thought they could rig the game in their favor with corrupt politicians, as well as corrupt politicians becoming more and more power hungry as they find dishonest businesses more than willing to hand over more and more liberty for a decent bottom line.

    True free marketers may be highly religious personally, but the market doesn’t care if you worship Jesus 24/7, as long as you’re dealing honestly and peacefully.

Corruption and greed has brought this nation to the place it is today, You know its corrupt when the emails that Barney Frank got from some of the Wall St.fatcats were thanking him for legislation that netted them millions. If anyone should be protested against, it should be the leftist Dems, who, in their ever reaching grab to destroy the free market and our freedoms, created the fiscal mess we are in today.       @hostOfJefferson: TRUE, but you must remember that honesty and fairness are core Judeo-christian values, and it was this set of values on which our constitution and economic system were based. If The People return to these values, then our economic problems would cease. Unfortunately there is a powerful minority of people who worship might and coin and would steal the liberty our forefathers bought with their blood, and return us to serfdom.

      These people have the right idea: we must go to our knees and seek forgiveness and assistance from our Creator. But then we must rise to our feet and lend our hands to the cause of liberty that God may work his miracles among men. We must rise to the cause and be chosen, instruments of his marvelous deliverance. God helps those who help themselves.

      Nice idea. This is how it works in the real world. There are ALWAYS going to be bad actors in all aspects of human life. That’s why we have laws and regulations, to deter and punish. The very idea that should not extend to the economic realm is insane. “free” trade can only result in those bad actors gaining the system and wrecking the economy for their own benefit.       The reason we have corrupt politicians is because we, as a people, became corrupt and elected them!

      We’ve turned away from God, so we’re denied the benefits of being a Godly society: stable families, honest dealings with each other, and the general prosperity that results from living the truth instead of Marxist fantasies.

    I do personally believe that as a nation we have turned farther away from God. We leave Him out of our lives. The statistics show that we are continually moving away from God, going to church less, identifying less with faith. Surely the argument can be made that even if you are not religious, the more a society adheres to a peaceful religion the better the society as a whole should be, especially when that religion preaches love, not hate, good will towards man and so on. If one embodies these characteristics, it is a good starting place for a society to build. However, these values can certainly be corrupted by the liberal progressives into warped policies that use them as a means to say we should all have free health care because that’s what Jesus would do.

      Nations cannot turn toward or away from anything. Only individuals can. If there is no such thing as collective salvation, and there’s not, then there’s no monolithic “the nation turned away” either. They’re co-dependent concepts. Your salvation as an individual lay in your accepance of Christ as your Lord and Savior, and even if nobody else in the nation believes in God, that has nothing to do with you and your redemption.

      Very true Jefferson, my redemption/salvation is between me and God.

      However, the bible does say:
      2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

      And there are many instances where the people of a country humbled themselves and prayed and God delivered them as a nation, not just the ones who prayed.

      Proverbs 21:1 is the scripture I’m thinking about now – “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.” Apparantly when it comes to kings God can enforce his sovereign will. Obama acts like a king….

      So, Nazi Germany did not “turn towards barbarism”? A nation’s “identity” is a melding of the common beliefs held by the majority. Prior to, and a long time after our independence, the majority of Americans were church going Christians. The brightest and best among them, including your namesake, gave them a government designed to protect their God given rights. The citizens of the 13 States liked that, and ratified it into the law of the land.

      The majority here still believes in God, but a too large minority doesn’t, because they’ve been taught Humanism from the Public Education Monopoly for the past 40 years, and to a lesser degree, for the past 100 years. God is powerful, but remember, even rock can be worn down by water, eventually.

      Dear God, please let us, as a nation, get back to faith in you.

    Oh, deal Lord (pun intended)! When will some people learn that they shouldn‘t shove their sky god everyone else’s throats. If you want to worship an imaginary friend, do it on your own time. Mysticism has no place in govt.

    I’ll make a deal with all of you sky god worshippers, I won’t shove my views down your throat, if you don’t try to pass legislation to force it down mine. How’s that? Is that too much to ask?

      Non-sequitur.

      You’re not being forced by Stefanski from doing anything, nor is anything being shoved down your throat. People expressing their belief as they wish, peacefully, is their right, just as it is your right to ignore them. To scream for them to “stop forcing it down my throat” when all they’re doing is engaging in peaceful expressions of faith is to in effect scream for them to be quiet and not express their faith, in other words, for them to be censored.

      He’s not forcing anything on anyone anymore than the OWS crowd, or Gay Day paraders, SIEU, Atheists with their lawsuit threats, et al.

      Everybody wants to proclaim their convictions or beliefs and that‘s okay but when those convictions deal with Christianity then it’s not okay?

      Or, is it because Christianity convicts all of us of our sins and the other groups are about indulging in them?

      You are speaking of God as a person…. This perplexes me… Why do you limit something to definitions that are trapped in physicality? Creating physicality behind something that is every and all things limits it. Reverencing what is GOD as the “sky god” is directly limited and on its base false.

      It is the Jewish theory that what is God is a force that is constant. It is the force of creation. The force that binds all thing into existence. It is not imaginary, yet it is not physical. It is the energy in all things living and non. It is the essence that bind us to the universe and vice-verse.

      In fact the God referenced in the Bible, heck even the Torah, is a facet of the supreme entity in which you are referencing. It is not the encompassing of the entity in its entirety but a human conception that is flawed in nature due to human influence in the writing of the text. You are well to accept this or not, but you should really study religion before discrediting it. As a matter of fact, our countries forefathers disagree with you on Religion being out of the Government.

      Thomas Jefferson was a Christian, though he found problems with the church (not God). His view of separation of Church and State was solely that of the State not having the ability to establish laws in respect to ONE religion, thus granting each citizen (even public officials) from exercising their right to praise whatever God they see fit.

      That’s “created equal”, not “born equal”. Please also note how they capitalized “Creator”.

Our whole Constitution enshrines Judeo-Christian values into the law of the land for America. It was designed by (mostly) Christian men to guard our God given rights. That Constitution’s First Amendment even guarantees that there will never be a national church that atheists like you would be forced to join. We‘re a constitutional republic because that’s the form of government that they believed would be the best to preserve those rights.

      If you want a godless democracy, I suggest you try the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea. Warning: the last I heard, they weren’t doing too well. Neither did France in their short lived democracy before Napolean. Unlike our republic, started by Christians, they had a godless democracy. Which sounds more “reasonable” to you: constitutional amendments, or “off with their heads!”?

    Still wondering when the Christians are going to realize that it’s the cheap grace costless Christianity that they have been practicing that has got us into this mess. We supposedly serve a God who is powerful and mighty yet most Christians are still walking as just another part of this dying culture. What would the Puritans do? Where is Gods power in America? Why is the Bible not read with the eye that it is the Absolute Authority of God? Why is it questioned and “interpreted” by mans fallible “wisdom”? why aren’t pastors calling for repentance and a return to the fear of God? After it’s not the grace, or the love, or the hope of God that is the beginning of knowledge, it’s the fear of God.

      Fear of God does not equal afraid of God. It is awesome reverence. I’m not afraid of God, but I respect/honor/consider him worthy in a greater way than I ever could another person.

      Banks will collect some red tape during regular business. However that Red tape is very small and usually is cause for loan officers dismisal. But when Clinton added his policy to the Graham,Leach, Bailey act of 1999 it required that the red tape(via CRA) grew at the same portion of the banks financial growth. failure to follow Clintons regulation would cost the bank and or mortgage company it’s FDIC protection. Couple that with Fannie and Freddie (ANOTHER LIBERAL AGENCY) forcing banks to lowers rates to stay competative and you have a mortgage crisis. Now whether or not bundling created a larger problem is debatable but there would be no issue IF BANKS WEREN’T FORCED THROUGH LIBERAL POLICIES TO CHANGE THEIR OPERATIONS IN ORDER TO COMPLY WITH LIBERAL P[OLICIES ISN’T DEBATABLE. IT’S FACT.

      We live in one of the most tightly controlled and regulated “markets” in the world. To lay anything at the feet of deregulation betrays either an ignorance of economic, or a misuse of the term “deregulation”.

      You are correct that bumper sticker summaries are generally wrong or at least grossly oversimplified.
