Logo for the gay rights t-shirt in question
A t-shirt business in Lexington, Kentucky has drawn the ire of critics after refusing to print shirts for the city’s annual gay pride parade. The company, called Hands On Originals, told parade organizers that its Christian beliefs are the reason that it has declined the Gay and Lesbian Services Organization of Lexington’s (GLSO) request.
In response, GLSO has filed a discrimination complaint with Lexington’s Human Rights Commission. The commission works on the local level to ensure that discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, age, sexual orientation and the like doesn’t take place in employment, housing and public accommodations.
The gay rights group wants to make the community aware of the situation and, based on statements from the president of the organization’s board of directors, is hoping that the stand-off will, to some degree, impact how the community interacts with the t-shirt company. Here’s a copy of the complaint:

“Hands On Originals does a lot of business in this town, and people should be aware of the situation, so they can make an informed decision about whether they want to buy from them,” said Aaron Baker, who is president of the group’s board of directors. ”It came as a shock because many of us are Christians, too, and what’s that have to do with anything?”
The problem, of course, is that most Christian denominations, based on biblical principles, stand firmly opposed to homosexuality, gay marriage and other related social phenomena. Interestingly, the company’s web site does have a logo that says “Hands on Faith” at the bottom left-hand side of its front page; it links out to a Christian apparel portion of the Hands On Originals business.
In addition to the complaint, a Facebook page has been created called “Boycott Hands On Originals.” Already, the effort has over 1,200 supporters. Additionally, the Fayette County Public School District has placed a temporary hold on all orders from the t-shirt company, with the city’s mayor, Jim Gray, saying, ”People don’t have patience for this sort of attitude today.”
Here’s a screen shot from the Facebook page:

Baker said the organization had gotten quotes from a number of Central Kentucky T-shirt companies, including Hands On Originals, and had selected it as the best local bid. The T-shirts for the fifth annual event were to include a stylized number 5 on the front along with “Lexington Pride Festival” and the event’s sponsors on the back.
Baker said Hands On Originals co-owner Blaine Adamson told the GLSO in a follow-up call that the company was declining the order “because we’re a Christian organization” but had found another company that would honor its price.
“Hands On Originals both employs and conducts business with people of all genders, races, religions, sexual preferences and national origins,” the company’s owner, Blaine Adamson, said. “However, due to the promotional nature of our products, it is the prerogative of the company to refuse any order that would endorse positions that conflict with the convictions of the ownership.”
The complaint that GLSO filed will likely lead Lexington’s Human Rights Commission to send a letter to the business asking for a written response. A formal investigation into consumer practices will then follow. If the parties don’t come to a settlement, the investigation could lead to compensatory damages being issued in GLSO’s favor, as there may be complications for the Hands On Originals in its fight, as it is a business and not a church or Christian group.
Recently, The Blaze asked you some questions surrounding this very important scenario. Should Christian business owners be able to turn gay customers away — and vice-versa? Here’s the original poll that allowed you to weigh in on the discussion.

From the page:
“I wonder if they also discriminate against idolaters, fornicators, adulterers, thieves, greedy, drunkards, slanderers, & swindlers too?”
It’s not an issue of WHO is conducting the business. But I guarantee this company would turn down a job that asked them to promote adultery.

When I disagree with someone, when I think what they say is vile and disgusting, I don‘t listen to them and I don’t buy their products. When they disagree with someone, they slander them and try to get EVERYONE to boycott them.
If the government doesn’t have the right to penalize free speech then why the !$%Y#^% do these special interest groups get to do it? If they want to complain, fine. If they want to tell everyone what was said, fine. But when they encourage others to take a course of action specifically designed to financially damage another group THAT is inappropriate. Posted on March 29, 2012 at 9:39amI agree that the company has the right to refuse buisness for something they disagree with. But I am also glad that the gay group(whatever the name is) has the right to petition the company. That is what the free market is all about. They are not calling for violence or even for it to be shut down so there is no problem. We don’t like a buisnesses practices we can let others know and make an informed decision on whether or not we want to give them our buisness. All those complaining against the gay group (too lazy to look up at the top for the name) need to cheak themselves. Many were calling for the boycott of the advertisers who dropped Rush during the who Fluke fiasco. You disagreed with their choice so you let them know with your wallet. The same thing is happening here. Those who disagree will boycott (as they have the right and should) and those who agree will support. That is the entire basis of the free market.

In general, yes. Just like how we have freedom of speech, in general. But you can’t yell “Fire” in a theater, proving that there are always exceptions. In this case, it depends on what their local town ordinance says; businesses need to abide by the local laws.
I feel the gay pride group are just getting huffy and being a bunch of jerks, but it is possible the law is on their side.

Sexual orientation is not covered under federal discrimination policies having to do with actually being served. I believe about 18 states do have state laws that make sexual orientation discrimination in rendering services illegal; however, Kentucky is not one of them.

Just like with the wedding cake lady who refused to make a cake for two homosexual women. It’s their business and they, not the city, determine who they will provide service to. If everybody in the town thinks this is wrong, they will not bring their business to the t-shirt company and it will go under, but don’t force it to service somebody in violation of their beliefs as a Christian!

Posted on March 30, 2012 at 2:04amMy comments to LOOKTOWARDTHELIGHT this homosexual militancy is more then about tolerance, the reason they target Christian businesses is that the demonic spirits at work through them want to corrupt the morals and values of those who find this lifestyle of perversion an abomination as does YHVH as evidenced by His Word. There is a perverse satisfaction that comes from forcing someone to do something that violates their moral code, that is what this agenda is about. Its based on lies and intimidation.
What they say among themselves and what they try to push down the throats of those who have morals and biblical values are worlds apart, the lies and hypocrisy are stunning. This movement is a political one based on intimidation. Starting with the fascist tactics they used to intimidate the American Psych Association into reclassifying sodomites. The glee they took in gloating among themselves that it had nothing to do with science but politics and their political muscle they flexed. This movement started in Weimar Republic of Germany and here in the US with a member of the satanic occult organization O.T.O. This all about making immorality and perversion accepted and destroying the bedrock of civilization the Judeo/Christian values. This is a spiritual war…
Here is a very revealing paper using homosexual sources for the truth of what is really going on:

Posted on March 30, 2012 at 2:23pmI agree completely. Businesses reserve the right to refuse business to ANYONE for ANY reason. The “LGBT” community can whine about it, but lets think about this for a second.
I’m sorry, but I will NEVER consider “sexual orientation” to be along the same lines of a gender, race, or religion.
No man or woman if born from the womb attracted to the same sex.
Don’t believe me? Fine. The only “scientific” evidence you will ever find supporting such nonsense is from the scientific communities that were openly harrassed by the “LGBT” community to the point that they were forced to change the contextual description of homosexuality from being a personal decision to being somehow “genetic”. Still don’t believe me? Some of the biggest “LBGT” supporting members/founders during that time even openly admit that it was never about the “scientific” aspects of homosexuality…that it was purely political.

Posted on April 1, 2012 at 6:33pmI am a gay man and have lived in Lexington for 7 years. The city does have an ordinance that includes sexual orientation. Read the article before you comment. The GLSO asked several companies for bids and decided to go with Hands On Originals who bid with complete knowledge of who asked for the bid. They had every right to state they were not interested in bidding – BUT THEY DID. Why? The gay community is just as an other organization in that we seek bids to get the best price and try to stay local (we do not discriminate or seek out organizations of any certain association they have; however, as most, we would usually choose an organization that is associated with our thoughts and beliefs). Hands On Originals willingly offered their services and then denied them and discriminated once they were chosen.

Posted on March 29, 2012 at 8:21amYou have a right to discriminate. I wish people would realize this. In fact, I don’t believe the govt should tell any business whom they can and can not serve. If a black owned business does not want to serve me because I’m white (which I’ve never had happen) then let them, the free market will punish them because people won’t shop there. The dirty little secret is, this may bring more business to this company. Homosexuality is a chosen lifestyle based on whom you like to have sex with. To equate that with race, sex is absolutely ridiculous and insulting to whom they compare themselve to. Namely black americans who are overwhelmingly against sodomy/homosexuality.

Typical liberals, this case reminds me of the Obama administration trying to force religious organizations to provide contraceptions and abortifacients in violation of their core belief structure. It’s funny how these liberals are always talking about Pro-Coice, however, when a choice is provide to them (in this case they have the choice to have the shirts made by another company) they cry foul. Posted on March 29, 2012 at 8:02amAny business has a right to sell to whomever they wish–and to refuse orders as they wish.
And here’s a guess: this organization knew ahead of time that this was a Christian company and likely knew therefore it has a problem with homosexuality and likely would not want to do anything to promote it. So perhaps the order was placed with the INTENT on hurting a company whose owners were of differing beliefs than theirs. . .? Another form of limiting freedom by trying to FORCE companies (made up of PEOPLE) to go against their own consciences and do things against their wills.
Gay people, straight people, green people, blue people–all have CHOICES as far as where they can shop, where they can worship, where they can do business. If I don’t like a particular store or its policies, I don’t HAVE to shop there. They lose by losing my $$. I likely wouldn’t patronize a gay bar. My choice.
This group had as much choice as I do. It can simply take its business elsewhere. Why the need to go out of one’s way to “get even,“ to ”cause deliberate harm” just because one doesn’t agree with your beliefs and dares to act upon them in a way you may not like?
I plan to now SUPPORT this company and will purchase from them online if possible–same as I did a coffee house who asked OWS people who were disrupting their business to leave! MUCH of America out here (I believe) will support businesses’ rights to their own choices/freedom and we’ll vote with our $$.

Posted on March 29, 2012 at 8:16amWhen the christian T-shirt company refused the work, they offered up a competitor that would honor the winning bid – that is an interesting twist on this story… Apparently this isn’t about getting t-shirts for a quoted price…

Posted on March 29, 2012 at 9:46amActually, the group placed an order and several companys bid on it and the Christian one won the bid. There is no information given that shows the group was targeting Christian organizations. In a sense it is the shrit companies fault for not knowing what the bidwas for. They do have a lot of character though with the fact that when they realized what they had bid on, they found another company to hinor the bid for the group. I do not agree with homosexualaity but honestly there is nothing to support your claim that they were simply targeting the company so they could make a scene.

They should have taken the order and printed Rainbow Shirts that said Jesus Saves…….
The H-Mo’s knew exactly what they were stirring up. I think they should be charged with a Hate Crime…..

Posted on March 29, 2012 at 7:54amTHANK YOU, CHRISTIAN t-shirt company for standing up for CHRIST.
HE told us that the world hated HIM and it would also hate us. nbd for us. HE has already won the battle. All we have to do is stand in HIS name. This group IS standing.
I was just about to place an order for some fabric. The designer is openly a homosexual. I have decided to stand up and even though the material is beautiful, I can and will live without it.
Simple choices sometimes. Costly in this world at times. Pay off is for all time.

Posted on March 29, 2012 at 7:41amThey should go ahead and make them…except they should demand they be made their way. Make them with a sewn on scotchguarded bib and a large hole on the back near the bottom of the shirt.
Might as well make them practical AND ergonomic.

Posted on March 29, 2012 at 7:41amI am sure the company would sell to any individual, but that does not mean they should be forced to promote the gay agenda. If a white supremacist or the racist black panther group wanted them to print tea shirts that promoted their brand of hate should they be forced to do so? The answer is a resounding NO!!!!
Report Post »JustPeachy
Posted on March 29, 2012 at 8:16amExactly.
And hey Mayor, some people may not have the patience for YOUR “attitude!”
Are they supposed to be FORCED to print shirts for Satanic groups, too? How about what they might consider a cult? How about porn? Are they not “permitted” to decline those orders too or must you nazis FORCE them into submitting to YOUR thoughts, beliefs, etc? IF someone doesn’t “tolerate” you, will you force THEM to “accept” you too?
It can work both ways, you know–so be careful. Perhaps we should lobby for laws that say YOU MUST attend a certain church and tolerate ALL the beliefs of others who totally disagree with you. Maybe it is YOU who should conform, not this company, not anyone else.
If you had a T-Shirt company, would you be OK with printing up ANTI GAY shirts for them?
Please answer that question honestly (if you even can) and THEN ask yourselves how you feel about your so-called “peaceful boycott.”

Posted on March 29, 2012 at 7:40amAnother example of a one group trying to force themselves on another group which has convictions that make it impossible for them to do business with a gay organization. Does the gay pride group simple go to another business? Like sane people would do. No, they want to “FORCE” this Christian business to do their bidding. What a bunch of idiots! Perhaps we should just close another business because it will not give up its convictions and be “Politically Correct” whatever that truly means. Where is common decency between people? I would not want to force some business to do something for me if they did not appreciate my business. Simply, find another place to do business. No, seems we have to make an issue of it….maybe ‘force’ them to ‘like us and do our bidding.” crazy, crazy. American is going down the tubes
Report Post »JustPeachy
Posted on March 29, 2012 at 8:19amWe need to find a GAY business that makes T Shirts, etc. and order some ANTI GAY shirts and see how they respond. If they refuse the order then we can boycott them, create a nice FB page, etc.
This nonsense has got to STOP.
Stop trying to cram your beliefs down your throats–whoever you may be! You shouldn‘t get a free pass just because you’re gay, or think you’re in a minority. The same law/rule you try to force onto others will apply to you too–don‘t think it won’t!

Posted on March 29, 2012 at 7:33amHere’s an idea:
1. Take the order.
2. Fill it with the best workmanship possible at the lowest possible price.
3. Deliver the order before the deadline.
4. Take every penny from the transaction and donate it to a ministry that reaches out to gays.
Or is that too much to ask from people who claim to be set free by the truth and care about those lost in sin?

Posted on March 29, 2012 at 7:47amBy that logic, the company would have to print pro KKK shirts as well. Do you believe in anything strongly enough to take a stand? There is no dishonor in having beliefs. Dishonor comes when your beliefs crumble under pressure.
Report Post »bhelmet
Posted on March 29, 2012 at 7:50amThat is an excellent course of action – for some. Some people see “taking the order” as against their beliefs. You may not agree, but they are entitled to their beliefs/principles. Liberal T-shirt companies would have the same right to deny service to a TEA party group if they so desired. Pretty much on the same grounds as the Christian company. I would, personally, take the order – and maybe even thank my competitors for refusing their order.

The coup de grace would be to let the gay community that you donated the money. It would be negative press for them.
They would be in a quandary as to whether to press their tactic when it it is come right back at them & raise the issue of why they are sick or why they try to stop other people to advocate like they do.

Posted on March 29, 2012 at 10:33amThe KKK is a bad example to use because they’re overtly hate based and almost universally disliked, but I see your point. They do have the right to refuse business, but all that accomplishes in this case is discord with a group which in all probability is looking for a fight in the first place. Face it, the “game” is rigged in the group’s favor, so why even play? Sidestep their tactics and use their own money – even if it’s only the profit and not the material costs – to fund an outreach into their group and help some see the truth. I bet if they ever found out that was happening they’d pick another t-shirt company next time.

Posted on March 29, 2012 at 11:55pmThey have the right to serve or not serve anyone for any reason. If I were in the area I would go there to buy t-shirts for as many groups as I could get involved. I like when a company stands up for what it believes. Why should they have to act against their conscience for someone else. it seems possible that this gay group did this on purpose to create just this situation. Why is every group but Christians allowed to act on their principles? They found the group another company to do the job at the same price. They more than fulfilled their Christian duty.
