Christian-Themed Movie ‘Courageous’ Resonates With Audiences Across America

Have you heard about “Courageous,” the new, Christian-themed movie that opened with great success this past weekend? The film — produced by Sherwood Pictures, the media division of Sherwood Baptist Church – tackles the challenges surrounding fatherhood.

The movie delves into the stories of four law enforcement officers. The men, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, David Thomson, and Shane Fuller, are good at what they do, but they face a major challenge at home: Learning how to be good and active fathers. Here’s more of the synopsis from the movie’s official web site:

While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. But they’re quickly discovering that their standard is missing the mark.

When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God … and to their children?

Watch the trailer, below:

This is the fourth film to come from the Albany, Georgia-based Sherwood Baptist Church. In 2006, the house of worship spent $10,000 making “Facing the Giants,” which grossed $10 million in the end. Another popular movie Sherwood produced, “Fireproof,” was $500,000 to create, though it grossed a large sum — $33 million. It appears “Courageous” is destined for success as well.

Over the weekend, “Courageous,” which was produced with only $2 million, premiered in fifth place among all movies. Already, the movie has earned $8.8 million, which is $2 million above the opening income earned by “Fireproof.” Entertainment Weekly writes:

Shown in 1,161 theaters (yet, notably, just one theater in Manhattan), Courageous earned the best per theater average of any wide release with a robust $7,580.

Here’s the astounding part about all of this: The people making these films aren’t award-winning directors and producers. The church’s pastors, Alex Kendrick (who directs, co-writes and often stars) and Stephen Kendrick (who produces and co-writes) are the men behind the camera. And church members, too, perform and work in the crew. It’s fascinating that these individuals consistently churn out independent hits.

Here’s a scene from the film:

Plus, audiences have been responding extremely favorably to the movie, with Sony exit polling finding most responding to the film by giving it an A+.

In the end, “Courageous” deals with fatherhood, a pertinent issue in today’s society. With so many families finding themselves broken and in need of repair, it’s no wonder this movie is hitting home with audiences.

Below, watch a clip that addresses the importance of fatherhood:

More proof that liberals OWN Hollywood…this is proof there is LARGE MARKET demand for spiritual drama that the mainstream Hollywood Liberalcrats refuse to produce. They would rather further their ideology and agenda than make money…frankly, THAT is what scares me about these zombies.

Hollywood‘s money is so huge already they don’t have to worry about whether they make a profit or not for about the next twenty or thirty years, and they are such a powerful tool for the liberal Govt. that they would be aided financially if they ever got in trouble. See “Flywheel”. An excellent low budget but very well done movie.

Actually, no its not, there is a limited audience of church goers, nothing more. This is October duldrums between the big summer tent poll movies and the Oscar contenders. This movie is not for a wide audience, and will have only a limited poll of watchers outside of the bible belt and preachers tent their is no audience.

Encino, as typical of your posts, you jump to conclusions without reading the article. This movie has already beaten the numbers tha Fireproof brought in — a movie that is still being rented regularly and has a strong string of follow-up books and Bible studies.

Those who don‘t know God can’t imagine that anything which draws you closer to Him could be appealing to a wide audience. It’s amazing how naieve you are. This world craves answers that can’t be found in the secular world. I know because I was one of them. Movies like this point to another answer and people respond — yes, even those who have no desire to draw closer to God. Fireproof was proof of that.

The Hollywood commies are NOT going to stand for this. Micheal Moore , Matt Damon, Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robins, Danny Glover, Morgan Freeman, Roseanne Barr, Rosie O’Donnell, etc……. are going to be up in arms over this. I hope more and more Americans with true conservative values will produce movies so our children will have the opportunity to watch ,without the progressive indoctrination propaganda they feed them now. If we could keep the influence of liberal Hollywood out of our childrens lives the communist takeover agenda would be set back at least a bit. (Look up the 45 steps for a Communist Takeover of America and you’ll understand the role Hollywood plays.)

@Encinom – yeah, and the stimulus worked, we are out of the recession, and the only problem is that racist Tea Party… I find it hilarious that Hollywood “blockbusters” that cost $100+ million to produce, open simultaneously in every theater in the country yet don’t make a profit until they go to DVD are “bigger” than a low budget movie that opened in only a few theaters to rave review and already is making profit.

Typical lib – punish success and reward failure – let me know how that works out for ya after the wealth producers disappear and the grocery store shelves are bare. I‘m guessing you won’t be able to feed yourself, yet alone defend yourself.

The family is what makes up the foundation of a nation. God fearing families produce a strong and blessed nation. Simple men can turn this nation around.

Does anyone remember how well “The Passion of the Christ” did? 600 million during its theatrical release, becoming the highest grossing non-English language film of all time.
I remember the huge uproar about how offended some liberal commentators were, & supposedly how offended the Jewish people are as well. Two problems with that; one the liberal commentators were not Jewish themselves, & second most have no idea what the bible say’s.
Watch the interview on the Blaze with Herman Cain & Christiane Amanpour from ABC. I want you to notice the part were they are talking about Blacks being brain washed. She actually tries to speak for Blacks not being black herself yet Herman Cain is black.
There are those with a liberal point of view that like to think they speak for Blacks, Christians, Jews, & the poor.
It will be interesting how some liberal commentators will handle this movie & its success. Who will they claim to be offended & try & speak for this time?

Hollywood at times allows “diversions” from their liberal party line (The Blind Side) or, when a spiritual movie is too big to ignore, grudgingly buckle under popular opinion (The Passion of the Christ). Looks like Sherwood Baptist Church is about to embarrass Hollywood again with another quality movie that speaks what people need to hear.

You are dead wrong the tent is the world. God’s messsage is universal and eternal and the consequences of rejecting His message of Truth in his Word now and for for eternity , which you do and mock which you do, have eternal consequences regardless of your opinion. Which is based on your own human wisdom which is finite and self-righteous. the ONLY thing that matters in a movie, book, song, speech, poem, etc… IS THE MESSAGE.
everything else is meaningless and/or is a device to get you to chant, repeat, believe or emulate/live a horrible message. it’s called propaganda techincally.

look at MOST rap, pop, industrial, techno, emo and whiner music… not all.. ok.. it’s NEVER ALL… with ANYTHING… that is a given. it’s just, MOST music today, has sweet beats, melodies, etc but the MESSAGE is complete trash…. yet you will “chant” / repeat these lyrics over and over because the beat/melody is good… etc… all you are doing is brainwashing yourselves… if the message/moral/value of a piece of media is trash… stop listening to/viewing it.. do yourselves a favor… have some respect for yourselves… you say you do, but you don’t… if you did.. you wouldn’t try to brainwash yourselves with compelte filth… look, i used to listen to all that garbage, skinny puppy, ministry, nin, anything fast and hard, nwo, ez-e, too short… then i realized later in life, it was all just ******* me off and making me believe stupid sh`t… i switched to jazz, bluegrass and jam band type stuff, and now i don’t repeat hate and victimization over and over in my head… don’t believe me huh? it’s cool… you will, when you grow up. ;) too me, being a victim is a choice. “get up! stand up! stand up for your right. get up! stand up! don’t give up the fight.” -bob marley.

The productions’ quality has improved with each movie since their first attempt at movie making called “ Flywheel ”. We have seen every one of their movies; Flywheel, Facing the Giants, Fireproof, and plan to see “ Courageous ”. For pure all American / Christian values, quite the opposite of today’s Hollywood production, please take the whole family to any of these fine movies. I think more movies like this should be made and I am close to being an atheist. Anything that shows men taking responsibility is a beautiful thing. Anything that shows people coming together helping each other is a beautiful thing. I do believe that is what Jesus was all about. Healing the sick, feeding the poor, and some other good stuff. BUT, you do not have to believe in Jesus or a God to be good and to do good things PEOPLE. I know you are asking about my Jesus reference. Jesus was the world’s best ever preacher. Nothing more and nothing less.

While I cannot say anything to take away from your message, for the most part, it is spot on. This movie encourages men everywhere to take stand and be accounted for, and to lead their families in a righteous way. However, you have flaws in your assessment of Jesus. The only book we have that points back to Jesus is the Bible, and in it, many times Jesus says, “I AM the light and the truth, NO MAN comes to the father except through me.” He claims numerous times that he is the only way to the father and he is the one and only Son of God. There were plenty of preachers in the Bible, but everyone knew they were just a flawed man (see John the baptist). This either makes Jesus ignorant, or a liar. He cannot be a “world’s best preacher” and be lying to people. I happen to believe what he says, when he claims to be the King of kings, and Lord of lords.

Jesus was the world’s best ever preacher for one simple reason: He was God’s only begotten son, and God’s truth lived within Him.

rfycom, I can appreciate your honesty, but you must make a decision. Jesus, in fact, was/is who He said He is, or He was a liar (or crazy). I find it interesting when non-believers say, “Jesus was a good man…a great teacher….a good example..etc..”
I hope you think about this and ask for insight. It will come to you in ways that you may not yet understand, but it’s a promise.

Great movie. I was looking forward to see a movie about everyday, hard working, God loving real men. I am soo sick and tired of movies, where men are portrayed as idiots, losers, imbeciles… This is a a good story, very encouraging. Here in South Miami the audience was very cheerful. Long applases after the show. People that never met before started to talk to each other after the show, and express their gratitude and deep satisfaction. Thank you!

I love all the movies this group has made. Fly Wheel, Facing The Giants, Fireproof and now this new one Courageous. They are absolutely amazing.

I‘m afraid Tim Mcgraw’s song writers may have written the screenplay.

It was written by the Kendrick Brothers. I cannot find, any where, who the screen play was written by. what are you afraid of?

My Dad died when I was 10 years old, I know how losing him affected my life. I wouldn‘t wish to see anyone go through the hole in one’s life it leaves. In fact it never leaves.
    Looks like an excellent movie.

I wish it well and hope it does a lot of good getting its message out, but these aren’t my cup of tea. I like art with a message, but I prefer it to be artistic. Too much Christian art is sloppy on the art side and the message comes off as preachy.

I like my sermons in sermon form.

The great thing is, you can choose not to go see it – att least, at this time, we still have a choice. And that is the beauty about art, it is in the eye of the beholder. While we haven’t spent money at a theater in many, many years, I will spend money to see this film.

I thought Facing the Giants was a little hard to watch, I mean, they’re really not actors after all! Fireproof was much better. If they keep improving, then I expect this one will be better also. I plan to see it.
It’s fun to see this church get better with their films each time, and to see them spreading a good message while they do it.

I haven’t seen Fireproof, but it’s good to know their quality is improving. Maybe they can start to hire some really good actors and writers for their next films.

There is absolutely nothing, no one on this earth to equal a strong CHRISTIAN man. There are many “good” men and women who do good things for this world; but there is nothing, there is no one like a CHRISTIAN filled with GOD and walking with HIM. It is the first wonder of the world.

Applause to the film makers and to the church which continues to stand FOR GOD. May GOD’S blessing surround and infuse you. In JESUS’ name, amen.

I plan on taking my 20 something sons. I am sure they will see where I had failings and I am hoping they will see how hard Fatherhood is. I also pray they get the idea that I tried and everything I did was because of my love for them. I also worked extremely long hours during summer months while they were out of school. They missed “going away” vacations, fishing, watersports etc.. while I was working doubles and days off to pay for mortgage, cars, health ins…yadda. I look back and say yes I provided for them yet at what cost. Did they miss out on that xtra Family time? That xtra bonding? I took them when younger to see Gibson’s The Passion of Christ. They were mermerized by that and they started their own learning of Jesus Christ. I hope this movie starts their own learning on being a Dad before they start their familes. Saving them from some failures before the happen.
