Christians Outraged After BBC Bans Network Mentions of B.C., A.D.The B.C. and A.D. versus B.C.E. and C.E. debate is heating up. If these abbreviations aren’t ringing a bell (of if they‘re so overwhelming that you can’t quite place them), close your eyes and think back to past history classes you’ve taken.

Dates and timelines will likely find their way back into your consciousness, as you recall that both B.C. and A.D. (which stand for Before Christ and Anno Domini — “Year of our Lord”) have, until now, been the basis of historical time.

But the BBC, joining other progressive institutions, has decided that using these religiously-charged abbreviations is no longer appropriate. Signaling major changes to the way that the news network will deliver radio and television reports, the government-funded media company has decided to stop making these references, replacing them with B.C.E. (Before Common Era) and C.E. (Common Era).

Christians Outraged After BBC Bans Network Mentions of B.C., A.D.Why, you ask? Well, the BBC claims that this decision is rooted in the media outlet’s commitment to remaining impartial. As Religion News Service points out, the network released an official statement saying that it is, “committed to impartiality.” Additionally, the release said, “it is appropriate that we use terms that do not offend or alienate non-Christians.”

British Christians, of course, have viewed the change as a move aimed at instilling political correctness. As a result, RNS reports that the network has been inundated with calls from listeners and readers who are less than content with the decision. Melanie Phillips, who is not a Christian but who stands opposed to the change, wrote the following on Mail Online:

…I am a Jew, so I am presumably a member of this group that must not be alienated.

It so happens, however, that along with many other Jewish people I sometimes use CE and BCE since the terms BC and AD are not appropriate to me.

But the idea that any of us would be offended by anyone else using BC and AD would be totally ridiculous.

How could we possibly take offence, since these are the commonly used and understood expressions when referring to the calendar?

Christians Outraged After BBC Bans Network Mentions of B.C., A.D.Phillips continues by claiming that there is no evidence that any groups are offended by the B.C. and A.D. references. Furthermore, she explains that even if some non-Christian groups were, indeed, offended, “it cannot ever be right for minorities to seek to replace fundamental majority cultural expressions or values with their own.”

Retired Anglican Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, an evangelical with a prominent voice in Great Britain, also voiced his opposition:

“This amounts to the dumbing down of the Christian basis of our culture, language and history. These changes are unnecessary and they don’t actually achieve what the BBC wants them to achieve. Whether you use Common Era or Anno Domini, the date is still the same and the reference point is still the birth of Jesus Christ.”

One BBC presenter has already pledged that he won’t be making the network-mandated transition and that he plans to continue using B.C. and A.D. Andrew Marr, host of “The Andrew Marr Show,” explains:

“I say AD and BC because that’s what I understand.  I don’t know what the Common Era is. Why is it the Common Era in 20AD and it wasn’t the Common Era in 20BC?”

Earlier this month, the Blaze reported on Australia’s decision to remove B.C. and A.D. from new curriculum. As you may recall, Sydney Archbishop Peter Jensen called removing references to the birth of Jesus Christ an “intellectually absurd attempt to write Christ out of human history.”

    There are no kind words that come to mind that express my outrage. The only comfort I have is that you can have your political correctness. And those that will leave God out of any equation of life will not be granted His promise of eternal happiness. Remember, when the Father has had enough of this generation HE will come like a thief in the night. He promises that EVERY knee will bow to Him just like in the days of the pharaoh during the plagues of Egypt! When the children of Israel were granted permission from pharaoh to leave Egypt, the Egyptians knew He was the living God and their stupid sticks couldn’t stop the death of every first born. This was called Passover and Jesus Christ became our Passover, our High Sabboth in which we have rest in Jesus Christ every day not just one day of a week.

      Well, well, I am glad I now know as I had been watching some programming from the BBC. NOT ANYMORE. BYE, BYE BBC….bye bye. That’s how I BOYCOTT SOMETHING. I turn the channel.
      So far, I don’t watch:
      NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, (some of FoxNews as they are moderate now) and BBC.
      Did I miss anything?

      We’re called to be spiritual people -Jesus’ kingdom is not of this world. our home is in heaven. this preoccupation with the second coming of Christ is a temptation that leads us away from our true calling -which is to become holy-to be filled with the holy spirit so that we can partake in God’s kingdom. This looking for signs and pitting yourselves against non christians [God knows his own-and not all who cry lord lord are his own] is a temptation that is not in keeping with pilgrims on their way to the heavenly kingdom and an encounter with Christ.Athiests ,muslims and jews and anyone can be His own if they are pure of heart.       First off, he was supposed to come back in the 1st century, second, if all non believers are d@mned, then aren’t ALL of the chosen people going to hell? Every single Jew that has dies since around 33 C.E. is burning in hell according to the book since they did not accept Jesus. So much for chosen people. How many of the chosen people have died since then? Where is the love that I keep hearing is supposed to be in the book? We are in the common era and that term is what is being used predominately in the world of academia, because guess what?, not everyone is a christian and doesn’t believe what you do and therefor, do not need to appease you.

      It is not too difficult to turn this around. CE simply stands for the Christian Era and BCE stands for Before the Christian Era. This will most likely offend those who came up with this nonsense PC garbage and that is a good thing. It does take a warped progressive mind to believe that the last 2000 years has something common about it beside Christianity.

      Rose-Ellen – Anyone who has ever told a lie, stolen anything, looked at another person with lust, looked at another person with hatred, disobeyed their mother and father, coveted what another has earned, misused God’s name, violated the Sabbath, or worshipped something/someone as more important than God has earned eternal suffering and damnation. God loved us enough to send his only son, who never sinned, to take our sins on himself and thereby free us from our rightful punishment. All we have to do is repent (turn away from our sins rather than embracing them), and rely totally on the attoning death of Jesus the Christ as the only source of our salvation. Those who murder the innocent with bombs have obviously not repented of sin. Those who behead people for accepting Jesus as their savior have obviously not accepted him as their savior. Just because someone believes something contrary to Christianity does not make their belief a viable way to enter the kingdom oh Heaven. There is truly only one way. And that’s not meanness on the part of the creator. He loved us enough to provide a way back to him that we didn’t deserve. But it’s his way (to Heaven) or the highway (to hell).     What shows how stupid the BBC and the like are is that the “Common Era” starts on the date of Christ’s birth. So what ever you call, and it should be A.D., it’s still extricably linked to Jesus.

      The method of counting years is an interesting subject. Suppose we could dispose of the counting the years backwards in the B.C.E. period, and adopt a continuous counting of years in a running method.
      So, no more B.C.E. years and our current C.E. years.
      What if we started with a year 1-2-3-4-5-…. and continue to our present time ?

      The starting year would be when Adam was created and by now the year would be 6035.

    If these politically correct fools are gonna start to use BCE and CE, then they may as well write the whole damn calander because the actual date (re: Years) are based on the birth of JESUS. Wouldn’t it, by their own definition; offend non-believers (i say non-believers because christianity doesn’t have a monopoly of our Lord Jesus) because the date actually reflects the basis for our calander?
    The Queen is supposed to be the Head of the Church of England, I wonder what her take is on it. Does anyone really care or will christians once again roll over and play dead.

      Frankly, as a devout follower of Jesus Christ, they can say whatever they want. It is what they DO that I object to. And then, I will pray about it and get the Holy Spirit’s guidance on the action I should do. So far, the HS has not led me to do anything towards those who blaspheme Jesus in any way, large or small. I suggest that Christians, if they truly ARE followers of Jesus Christ, get a thicker skin. If the people of Great Britian can’t take a stand on this and the BBC wants to aquiesse to the continued radical assault on their homeland, then so be it, but when the media in this country starts that stuff, they’re really gonna have a problem; it will be the final nail in the coffin of mainstream media.       Sometimes I really do not get Western civilizations. What do they possibly think they will gain from all of these removals of God from the public square? Not wanting to offend Muslims is just the excuse to remove God, because Satan wants to rule this relm and he can’t have reminders of the world God convened. They will eventually come for your books of worship because those just being in existence will be offensive to some and the hate speech laws are already setting this up. People you really need to wake up and see what is going on all around you. Put the picture (worldview) that you shaped in your mind to the side and re-evaluate what it has turned into today.     As a devout evangelical Christian, I’m not outraged, either. First off, I can refer to BC and AD any time I like (if they try to arrest me for that, that’s another story), and like Chr1st14n, I can see the signs of the imminent End Times. I’m not foretelling the end of the world, but I’m ready for it when it comes. And to be truthful, it can’t come soon enough.
