Christians Raise Funds to Help Atheist Who Threatened to Sue Over TX Nativity Scene

Christians Raise Money For Atheist Nativity Protester Patrick Greene

Patrick Greene (The Athens Review)

Turning the other cheek is a Biblical teaching that can be difficult to live out in practice.

That being said, it seems at least one group of Christians is able to embrace the tenet with grace and humility. A church in Athens, Texas, decided to help an atheist in need by raising money for his groceries and other essentials.

The individual who received the aide, Patrick Greene, had recently threatened to sue over the presence of a nativity scene on public property. He abandoned the lawsuit, the Friendly Atheist blog reports, when he found out that he was suffering from a serious eye condition that could lead to blindness.

If the nativity scene was, again, erected on public land, Greene previously said he would sue ”to show that Christianity does not rule my state of Texas, the Constitution does. Christianity is only one of the many faiths represented in this state.” Now, he seems to be singing a very different tune.

The symbol he was targeting may ring a bell. Remember when thousands of Christians rallied in Texas back in December in support a local nativity scene? The Freedom From Religion Foundation, as you may recall, was demanding that it be removed from the Henderson County Courthouse lawn. Greene was among those opposed to it.

Despite the rift between Greene and the Christians supporting the scene, Jessica Crye, an Athens woman, rallied believers to assist Greene in paying for groceries and other needs following his retirement as a result of the illness.

“I knew of his lawsuit and threats and thought how sad it was for him to be so bitter toward Christians,” Crye is quoted in TylerPaper.com. “I thought he must have never felt the love of God through Christians. I also thought about how scary that must be.”

So, she and her church stepped in and decided to put the past — even the very recent threats of a lawsuit over a religious structure they believe in so deeply — behind them. TylerPaper.com continues:

Now retired, Greene replied that he needed some funds for groceries and other expenses to carry him and his wife, Karen, while they got squared away with the start-up of Social Security income and pay their taxes.

A check was sent. Greene said he and his wife debated whether the check might be for $10 or maybe $50 or even $60.

To their astonishment that any Christian would ignore the fact that they are atheist and help, the check was for $400.

“Why not turn this into something else? This is a great opportunity to turn the other cheek and show God’s love,” Crye said.

Her pastor, Rev. Erick Graham of Sand Springs Church, said that giving Greene the $400 dollars was a no-brainer.

“We didn’t have to think about it or pray about (it). We saw the need, he said. “We don’t discriminate on who we help, whether they are Christians or non-Christians, church members or not. We just help those with a need.”

In addition to these funds, another $500 was donated by atheists who were also moved by Greene’s plight. The man and his wife were so moved by the gesture that they actually purchased an electrical star for the nativity scene and had it shipped to Henderson County.

“I saw the nativity scene on a video on YouTube. There’s no star on top of it. Shouldn’t there be one?,” Greene pondered. “I just hope that the Christians that weren‘t a part of this contribution to us don’t mind that an atheist bought them a star.”

Someone once said that the ability to be a fool is a great gift. By David’s definition, and thus by The Holy Spirit’s definition, this man is a fool. I hope that despite the loss of his physical eyesight, The Lord opens his spiritual eyes through this act of selfless Christian love and decides to save his soul from the loveless existance he so adores. Praise God for these true Christians who outshine the rest of us. Amen.

No – it is not that they lack the emotion of love – it is that they lack the restrictions of accountability.

You can love something so much and you would be willing to do anything to get it. Knowing that you will one day account for every word and deed you have done in your life helps you determined the difference between Love and Lust!

I would love to have a shiny new sports car – but I am not willing to steal, kill, deceive, hurt or destroy anyone or anything to get it. It is appointed once for “all” to die and then God’s judgement – Knowing that I will one day stand before the Judgement Throne of God – keep me on the straight and narrow. I cannot be tempted nor will I be deceived – otherwise, I would of had that Shinny New Sports car along time ago.

DB321 To love is Christ.. Jesus said, “As I have loved you, love one another”.. I think it is simply impossible to love anyone, unless you have Christ in your heart. Its in our DNA.. we come into the world with that one trait.. those who have lost it or are void of it are led by another force…When your heart is black with evil or hatred then I would say Satan is there… but to have the ability to love comes from Christ!

Preposterous to say the least. That is tantamount to saying “you have to fear or must be made to fear something after death” to be moral would be testament to your lack of self control and reasoning. A corporeal existence is all an atheist has. They’re not going to throw their life away running planes into buildings, drinking poisoned kool-aid, or being imprisoned for molesting choir boys like theist do.
God is for people that lack the ability to otherwise control with their emotions and their impulses or couldn’t otherwise win an argument without turning to their imaginary bully in the sky. Philosophy, empathy, & reason can make good morals. Imaginary sky daddies are simply a catalyst to force some groups poorly thought out moral opinion on the ignorant masses without an arguable reason other than “you’ll burn in hell”.

@PONTIAC – You must have a “Logic Tank” that drains a little every time you attempt to argue something, and this tank has long been empty. Where once the logic in yours posts was flawed, you have now devolved into nonsensical rambling.

Christians don’t attempt to be moral for fear of the afterlife, they do so because their objective moral source (God) demands it. Christians sometimes fail at this…but the objective standard of accountability still holds true. Most Christians understand that you can’t really “earn” your way into heaven.

By contrast, atheists hold to no objective standard for morality, therefore what is moral is simply a subjective and sliding personal standard, which by its very nature presents a lack of moral accountability. Your argument that atheists don’t require the threat of a hellish afterlife to be better behaved in this one would be true if atheists could establish that they are better behaved and that there is a universal and objective moral standard by which their behavior could be compared. I’m still waiting for an atheist to demonstrate this, and I suspect I’ll die waiting.

Insofar as philosophy. empathy, and reason alone make for a good moral system…feel free to share examples that are not simply failed utilitarianism painted over with hippie free love a la Secular Humanism. Additionally, please demonstrate where any of these are held to an objective moral standard and are not based on an existing Christian moral framework.

@PONTIAC – On a related note, you do realize that the ignorant Internet atheist insults do your position no favors, no? If anyone here is having a problem controlling themselves, it’s you. No wonder the American populace at large holds so much distrust for the militant godless and their socially autistic hordes. Of course, I‘m sure it doesn’t help that any atheist in sufficient power is more likely than not to commit mass murder. Moral indeed.

Finally, with roughly 2000 years of philosophical study, the Christian moral position is far from poorly thought out, and one need not turn to any deity be it real or imagined to demonstrate that you are an argumentative and intellectual lightweight. You are simply too small for this ride and while whining about it may get you some free cotton candy, you still won’t be allowed on the big boy coaster.

The love of Christ is unconditional. Our love for our fellow man is supposed to be like Christ’s love. So many people have not seen God’s love through us because we are too busy judging others. Judgement of others is between them and God… not up to us. He got a star for the nativity in gratitude for their caring deed. How precious is that! God Bless him and his family. One of the nicest couples I ever met were atheists. They had more love for others than some who call themselves Christians. May we be extensions of Jesus’ hands and feet here on earth.

I don’t think you really know what love is. Being willing to do anything to get something is greed, not love. Love is an emotional / (debatable) chemical reaction in the human brain.

“I would love to have a shiny new sports car” So what you are saying here is that you would “love” to have the new sports car, not the car itself, or driving it, or looking at it, but “having it” again this is greed not love

ABBYGIRL1994 – “I think it is simply impossible to love anyone, unless you have christ in your heart.” So the over six billion people in the world who do not believe in christ are incapable of love? This type of thought is not rational.

Also, love could be looked at as an emotion or a chemical reation, doesn’t matter which. What it really is, is a gift. If someone hasn’t been given that gift, then they do not possess it. It is, however, readily available for those who wish to have it.

We all inherently possess hate. We have a nature that feeds off of it and procreates it. It is a struggle for all of us to defend against, even if we choose to ignore or deny that fact. Its easy to get mad, but its a little more difficult to forgive. Why is that, I wonder? Simple – love goes against our physical nature, believers as well as non-believers. It is not until the Spirit is awakened inside someone that they begin to actually appreciate love for what it truly is, but even then, its just the beginning of the war with the flesh. A war that non-believers unconsciously forfeit and subsequently, without the gift of love, lose.

An atheist worldview allows you, however, to allow feeling to trump principle if they happen to be stronger feelings at the moment. You are inherently pragmatic and not principled. When you do act according to principle and not feeling (i.e. not out of believing it will be good for you to act according to principle at this moment, such as objectivism teaches) then it is because your God-given conscience is prompting you. “So, what your saying is if someone does not believe in god they lack the emotion of love?”

No. Love in Scripture is not simply emotion. Everyone has emotions. We use the word love rather loosely but in Scripture (especially in the New Testament) there are three words for love. Eros, Phileo, and Agape. Eros is what you think it is, phileo is brotherly friendship love, and Agape is the kind of love God possesses. We are called to emulate that. But we fail in many ways.

Agape love in Scripture is a selfless dedication to the good of the other, regardless of emotion. Self sacrificing love. None of us loves in that sense perfectly. Only God loves perfectly. In that sense atheists are incapable of ‘love’ – and Christians are not really much better usually. That‘s why we need God’s agape love and his forgiveness, which is only found in Christ, because he was the only one who could pay such an atonement for us.

Islam is 100% incompatible with the so-called freedoms and rights supposedly enshrined in our so-called Constitution. The PURPOSE of Islam is the elimination of the very same so-called rights in our so-called Constitution. What about this don’t you understand? Islam cannot coexist with freedom of religion and equal rights, it never has, it never will, it is impossible even if nice meaning twits want to pretend otherwise, you are hoping to see a unicorn fly.

As for the so-called “nice” Muslim individual, understand that they have no choice, they cannot leave Islam, there is a death penalty for that. So they have to pretend Islam is fine, even if they know better. They don’t want to die. Perhaps you can see how cowardly that makes them, but it is cowardice they have lived with since birth, as their own mother would have killed them if they rejected Muhammad and Islam. Try to get it through your thick idiotic skull, Islam is intolerant, bigoted, and evil, and it is not intolerant, bigoted or evil to acknowledge that simple fact.

But Romans, there is a HUGE problem in the West today that so-called Christians are naive and dangerous in their idiotic view of the world. It is evil to help Islam, but they don’t see it that way. Any aid given to Islam or countries controlled by Islam only builds it up and hastens the day when it hurts more Christians and Jews and other non-Muslims, and continues to destroy the hope that any of the Muslims will find salvation. Islam hates the God of the Bible, it is the eternal enemy of the God of the Bible, why do Christians want to help that? ANY assistance given to Muslims must be accompanied by the stern warning that Islam is false and they are in need of leaving Islam. Assistance given without that warning only hurts everyone involved. They take any assistance given to them as weakness on Christians part, not as an act of kindness due to love of Jesus or the God of the Bible. Even helping an atheist is not as dangerous, but the way most people respond to stories like this reveals the same naive detachment from reality that is the problem associated with helping Muslims.

Rather than be so concerned about your husband I will be concerned about all of the people who are not Muslim and who are persecuted by Muslims everywhere that Islam has any numbers or control. I feel sorry for people born into Islam who can’t leave it if they want to follow Jesus instead, or be an atheist. All of the civilizations of the world that Islam has destroyed makes anyone who continues to follow Islam guilty by association. But in any case, if you like Islam so much, live in a country already subjugated and destroyed by it, we need to save Western Civilization, save our freedoms, save our future, by keeping Islam out of our countries. History proves that Islam is the greatest destroyer of lives, societies, countries, and civilizations that the world has ever known. We cannot allow the West to fall into the pit also. I care enough for Muslims to know that we need to save America and the West as areas free of Islam so that any individual who wants to leave Islam can escape to our Islam free zone and not be at risk of being killed by other Muslims. So take your insults and stuff it, your crocodile tears mean nothing. If you have love for anyone or anything, leave Islam.

Perhaps here is the place to clarify the difference between natural/human love and God inspired love.
Human beings essentially love with condition: “I will love you, but you must return the sentiment” is a good way to put it. God loves mankind in spite of what they have done (or not done). “for God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son…”There is no condition place upon it; it is there for any to accept or reject. God doesn’t cease loving those who reject Him. The christian has the capacity to love in the same manner, and I would say that these christians exhibited it very clearly. The atheists sent the $$$ because the recipient is one of them; the Christians sent it in spite of his being an atheist. If you have a problem understanding this, perhaps you need a dose of God’s love yourself (hint: get born again).

Well done good and faithful servants!!!!! Well DONE!!!! This is how you show God’s love to the world. This is how you embody the bible when it says that ‘yet while they were sinners.‘ So many only ever see the surface Christians and the ’Sunday morning Christians’ (as I call them.) And never get to experience God’s love for them displayed by true believers. Well done in following that ‘still small voice’ when it called to you. Well done!!!! This is how it’s done folks. EVERY Christian should read this story. Thank you again Blaze for running it. And btw, of course they’re going to accept the star for their nativity scene it probably now means more to them than the rest of the scene pieces because now it is a reminder of how being faithful to God and His teachings reaps rewards you never expect and how much it can touch people. This is how we fight the good fight against evil in this world. This is how we turn people to Christ, showing His love and being His hands and feet. This will probably bring MANY more than just this man and his wife to Christ. I hope it softens his heart and brings him to Christ but even if it doesn’t work for him, others will come

Here’s a good self test to know whether or not you are a Socialist. When Jesus said: The love of many will wax cold. Does it mean: Many people’s love will wax cold? Or, loving many people will wax cold?

I bet unthoughtful people never thought of that one, but John knew the things you would believe, and that’s what made the thousand years of ruling with Christ come to an end, and Hell gave up all the dead. Because people would become pig-headed to demand from themselves “I love many.”

And people replaced the love ‘of’ the human being, with the love of the sheer numbers of them. Meaning you just love numbers, but not people.

Tim..”and that’s what made the thousand years of ruling with Christ come to an end”
1000 years ruling with Christ came to an end? Are you talking about the millenium? I was just wondering because you made it sound like past tense.
I believe a person’s love will wax cold. Not love of many. We will love ourselves and no one else.

THIS is what Christians do every day. We show God’s love to our fellow man. God loves each and every single one of us regardless of color, race, sex or faith. He believes in us, even when as we don’t believe in Him. God bless that church, they are certainly showing the love of the Lord and God bless that man and his family. I pray their eyes and heart are opened. “Every knee will bow and every tongue confess”

    ex-mormon deist here

I busted out laughing after I heard that the Atheists raised $500 compared to the Christians $400.

It’s pretty obvious that Atheists tried to ONE UP the Christians.

    @TEEBUBBA you’re an idiot.

“I saw the nativity scene on a video on YouTube. There’s no star on top of it. Shouldn’t there be one?,” Greene pondered. “I just hope that the Christians that weren‘t a part of this contribution to us don’t mind that an atheist bought them a star.”

really? just about doing good instinctively? Either Greene has an agenda or he’s “instinctively” joining Christianity. I’m going with both since…he was obviously touched by the fact…that the message of Christianity has actually resulted in Charity.

Screw this “INSTINCTIVE” crap. That totally denigrates the individual/independence of the SOUL and this idea of SELF-DETERMINATION.

It’s reflective of who a person is…because Greene chose to be that way.

      Also, The Glory IS God’s!
The Glory Doesn’t Belong To Mere Humans!

This Is Jesus’ Modus Operandi —

“So He [Jesus] came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up.
And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah.
And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
      Because He has anointed Me
      To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
      To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.’ [Isaiah 61:1,2]

Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down.
And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
And He began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.’ ”
      ~ Luke 4:16-21

It is the mission of the Church to reach out to the community in need regardless of their religion or lack thereof. We actually have built an addition onto one of our buildings so that we can serve the needy and our 30 plus missions. The need is great. One of these missions is to help with electric bills, mortgage payments, food, and other emergencies for those in need. Yes, that IS the mission of christianity. Not to slough it off on government, or “their own” so to speak. There are no strings attached.

That this man’s heart was changed, even in a small way, that he bought the star was a very kind jesture.

You cannot be a pansy while living as authentic follower of Jesus Christ. Live out in that warrior spirit he calls us to be. I believe in God. I see him all around us. When Jesus, son of God, talked about his father and tree of life, and now Jesus being the vine from which we branch from, he wasn’t asking himself ‘what would I do’ rather ‘what would my father do’ he sacrificed himself and nailed our sins to that cross, buried them along with him, and rose from the dead. The awesome eternal life of God was no longer his Father, but our father.

The continued eating from the tree of knowledge of right and wrong get us no where without Gods eternal life. There is God’s character in us, by design the creator, designer of life, and the highest of highs. Do not be afraid instead ask what Jesus is doing in me, in us. We can make great advancements with this in mind.

This is helping a fellow human in need something Christians and others do instinctively. The fact that he is an “atheist” is irrelevant. Those who think it is like the reporter perhaps should reexamine their own lives.

I submit that the fact that he is an atheist is totally relevant exactly BECAUSE there ARE many Christians who should reexamine their own lives. If you are honest you have to admit that, of all the times in recent history that atheists have sued “Christianity”, you have probably not heard of any other examples of this.
