Christie Draws Criticism From Unions Over Pension Overhaul

In his continuing efforts to reign in state spending, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has once again angered union leadership, now drawing fire over his plan to roll back public pension benefits. Christie Draws Criticism From Unions Over Pension Overhaul

On Monday, Christie unveiled his proposal to reduce benefits and increase public employees’ contributions, claiming the cuts will help the Garden State’s budget crisis and save the pension funds in the long-run. In response, unions didn’t hesitate to object, saying the state should honor all past pension agreements.

Under Christie’s plan, the state would repeal a 9 percent increase in benefits and eliminate automatic cost of living adjustments. The plan also proposes to raise the state’s retirement age to 65 from 60. Christie says he‘s looking to ease the state’s cost burden by reducing pension payouts to future retirees and hopes to save the pensions in the long-run by requiring employees to start contributing more of their own earnings to their individual pension funds.

Christie took to the airwaves Wednesday to help sell his plan to the public. In an interview with Neil Cavuto on Fox News, Christie said “The system is completely out of control, and we are moving toward insolvency if we do not deal with the long-term obligations that the state has.”

“Now I know there are some public workers who aren’t happy about it today. But 10 years from now, when you have a pension to collect and health benefits to collect, you are going to be looking for my address to send me a thank-you note,” Christie says.

Christie Draws Criticism From Unions Over Pension OverhaulUnions and Democrats in the state legislature have responded to Christie’s plan by demanding that the state renew paying pension contributions after underfunding the system for years. But while Christie acknowledges the state’s missed pension contributions as a serious problem, he says even if the state made its required pension payments, the state would still face some $85 billion in unfunded liabilities.

If all we do is pour money into a broken and failed system, that broken and failed system will swallow that money alive, and get hungrier for more.” Christie said. “We can’t afford to continue like that.”

Senate President Stephen Sweeney, a Democrat, said he supports pension reform but not Christie’s plan. In response, Sweeney has threatened to block any pension system reform bills until the state relieves the overburdened fund. “The state has to make their payments toward the pension too,” he told Fox News. “When the governor says, ‘Well, I‘m not going to put any more money in the pension system because it’s broke, does that make it any better?’”

Christie has been in a near-constant fight with unions since taking office earlier this year, but remains firm in his intent to cut government spending — a move unions argue hurts the middle class. “Once again, Governor Christie is attacking middle class workers in New Jersey,” says New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) president Barbara Keshishian. “His proposals for deep cuts in pensions and health benefits, combined with much higher costs taken out of the pockets of public employees, will hurt hundreds of thousands of working families.”

At a packed senior citizen community center earlier this week, Christie compared his first eight months in office and his fight to fix the state’s fiscal situation to arriving to a room after a big party. “There were a bunch of drunk people passed out on the floor, a whole bunch of empties lying around, broken dishes,” Christie said. “So I showed up. Now I have two choices. Walk out, or clean up.”

“We’re going to clean up.”

Christie is the first in the movement of new politicians who speak straight and speak the truth. He’s actually in the cat-bird’s seat with this. Either the unions agree to reform pensions or he‘ll just say that the state doesn’t have the money to pay for them, which is true in itself. This is the first shockwave in a larger movement to hit back against the thug mentality of the unions and their quest for uber-entitlements in concert with our “gang-style” government. Keep it up Gov. Christie! The rest of the country is watching and listening and we‘re impressed with your honest fight to restore our country’s principles and values!

I want everyone to take note that Christie never needs to hum and haw and um and ah to buy time while he thinks of an answer that won’t get him into political hot water (or blatantly read from a tele-prompter) . He speaks what is commonly known as The Truth. This is a product of being an intelligent person who has cultivated a cohesive philosophy and doesn’t need to hide his true motives and goals. Contrast that with our fine, young President, Speaker of the House, Senate Majority Leader or any other currently serving democrat.

He could really steer America in the right direction. I heard him say a while back that he is not looking to run for president in 2012 …and understandably he is focused on NJ.. but then I heard he is going (or went) to Iowa recently …I sure hope he gets NJ fixed by 2012 because we could use his brand of fiscally responsible conservatism all across this land.

I think we’re all for making money here, but the unions manipulate the system. It’s not the cops making $90,000 or whatever they make with overtime that is the focus. I believe it’s the costs of the union and the manipulation that occurs. People are earning the money and I think that is to their credit and it‘s easy to look at people in different demographics and compare but you can’t. That’s not how the system is set up. I love NJ’s governor. He knows where the real problems lie.

Glenn Beck is a Demagogue. Get your head out of your ass. He is not picking on the unions they are the ones making the bigest stink that is all. First of all he is trying very hard not to raise taxes on the overtaxed residents of NJ. Second of all the head of the teachers union in NJ makes $ 550,000.00 per year. Christie who is govenor of the whole state make $ 175,000.00. Why don’t you tell the head of the union to give something back to the poor people he exploits. Hmmmmm not hearing anything gee I wonder why. Wake up and smell the coffee it is not the government taking advantage of the union worker it is the head of the unions that exploiting their own workers. The should hang their head in disgrace for what they are doing to their workers. And the workers should stop paying their dues to these people.

Unions have had it very good for a long time now. If you can’t afford it, you can’t afford it. Times are tough right now for everyone, and could get much worse. They should be grateful for what they have, and meet the Govenor half-way to insure the future for themselves and others. Maybe if they spent less money on political issues, and used it to better the lives of their members, they would be better off. The unions are pricing themselves right out of business, IMO.

Union bashing seems to be popular in New Jersey and elsewhere. I feel sorry for the police and fire fighters and teachers that Christie wants to screw over after many of them have spent years and years working in a lower paying job, trading that off for the knowledge that they would at least be able to retire and have health benefits.
Now that it’s time to make some tough decisions, rather than Christie committing political suicide in bad economic times and stating the truth, which is we need to raise taxes, he has made the correct political choice. Which is, the people affected by his proposed cuts are a minority of voters, so we can sacrifice them and he’ll still be re-elected.
    Politically expedient, but morally bankrupt.

My understanding is that if they raise taxes much more in NJ the only people left to pay the taxes will be the people who are too poor to move.

This is the problem, in order to get elected promises were made that are impossible to keep; what’s the expression…”your ego‘s writing checks your body can’t cash”. Well the politicians ego‘s wrote checks that the taxpayers can’t cash either. At the end of the day the money isn’t the property of the Government, we allow ourselves to be taxed to provide basic services & services that can be performed in no other way. The politicians learned that through tax policy they could get reelected so often that being a “servant of the people” became a full time career.

The people of NJ can no longer afford to keep the promises that shouldn’t (& in fact couldn’t) be made in the first place. It is not the fault of the teachers, firefighters, & police…but we are all playing musical chairs…& the music is stopping.

Do you have any idea what a small town police officer makes in NJ? Try around $80,000 a year!!! This is because they were promised (and received) huge pay increases every year that the state cannot afford. In NC a small town cop is lucky to get $25,000 a year. I’m a teacher in Oklahoma and we didnt get a step increase or pay raise this year because of the budget and I understand why. I would rather have my job then bankrupt my state and be out of a job but unions dont ever see that as a possibility….a possibility that is very real. Our country is in trouble and WE ALL have to make changes and sacrifices if we want to survive as a nation!
God bless Christie…wish we had more leaders like him willing to mark the hard choices before its too late! I do love the way CHristie speaks…straight and to the point. I love that he is taking on the teachers union. I realize he cannot take on every issue at the same time and God knows NJ needs soo much work in order to get “affordable” again. He needs to privitize different agencies/authorities like New Jersey Transit…

Having said that..there are some things that concern me. One, why didn’t NJ join the other 20 states in fighting Obama Care? I want to believe it was because he was new to the office and maybe wanted to go after the NJEA and other unions at first. Maybe he thought that 20 states was enough to fight obamacare. ok i accepted that.

BUT, as of now, christie supports an innitiative signed into law by corizine administration…OUR version of cap and trade (Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) . It is a joint venture with 10 other surrounding states. It will greatly increase our energy costs. Our electric will sky rocket etc.

there are a few other items that are questionable.

I know there is no perect candidate or politician but i do hope christie comes to his senses and drops out of this program. New jerseyans cannot afford these higher costs of energy.

This is why some people may question Christie or refer to him as a RINO. He IS much better than the past few governors but he just may not be the most conservtive out there..but damn, i do love the way he speaks..and ALL without a teleprompter :)

Don’t get me wrong… I support our troops and cops and firefighters. We should pay them more while they are in and we should pay ALOT more for combat pay. Other than that, 20 years and a pension is bad fiscal spending. Especially when many of those 20 year guys are pencil pushers. Come on!
And another thing and I might take heat for saying this… but it is voluntary entry. No one is required to serve in the military or be a cop. It’s a risk you sign up for at your own doing.

He is the surgeon operating on a cancer, that if left alone, will consume the whole body. Some day (soon) these dogs that are barking at him now will be licking his hand in gratitude for saving their asses.

I ain’t no liberal, I live in NJ and yes Christie is an in the closet RINO. He gets a lot of good press because he’s taking on cops and teachers and pensions. He IS a cap and trade guy! He has no problem balancing the state’s budget on the backs of the states workers. He hasn’t made any appreciable cuts in social and welfare spending and nobody calls him on it. His attitude and appearance match his political leaning, i.e. a RINO. He also uses a lot of half truths to make his points. No every state and municipal worker is making 6 figures and pulling in a gravy train. I know of a lot of good people that are going to be hurt by what he’s doing and NONE of what he is doing is going to affect the State Legistlature or himself re: benefits, pension, etc.

They will probably not pay him with the pound because the UK is broke also. Probably the Yuan or some other asian currency. He could take the American Peso but it to is not worth the paper it is printed on. I think this is what the story is about WE”RE BROKE!

Contrarianthinker-I agree, if people can only add snarky comments or out-and-out lies, they need to find somewhere else to play. I am all for dissenting views, I will debate the issues with anyone, but you have to bring SOMETHING to the table.

I was not talking about anyone in particular, I was talking about in GENERAl. As far as I know, I am allowed to say I want, within reason, and don’t need you to tell me to “lighten up”. You are not in charge either, BROKER0101. Are we clear??

BLUEYES: I suppose then that you like it when trolls post here with silly remarks? That‘as OK but I don’t. From later posts by Sailor, I see that his post was meant to be humorous and I apologized publicly. I also suggest to all to use netiqeute so such misunderstandings don’t occur in the future. But I would point out that the owners of this blog have placed a feedback device whenever someone feels a post is inapproapiate. I happen to beleive it should be used. In fact, use it on me IF you wish OK?

BROKER 0101-Why are you trying to manage my comments? There was clearly, no threat. You are probably just not used to having someone respond to your snarky comments. Sorry.

      @Contrarianthinker
Your the one theatening to report people. I don’t need to report you or want to. If you knew anything about Gov. Chris Christie you would have realized that Sailor was giving the Gov a compliment. But obviously you don‘t so if you misunderstood him it’s because of your lack of knowledge and not smiley faces. Before you start trying to control the conversation and theatening people you should know what your talking about.
Please spare us the lesson in netiquette.

I understood the comment and thought it was funny. I think people are just touchy because of Dingleberry (where is he anyway?) and others. IMHO Christie is the standard to which all Tea Party candidates should be held.

This man is trying hard to fix a broken system. The Left says anyone wanting to stop the spending is hurting the middle class. Same ole Left talking points, lets pour money into it. Throughout the country it is these pension plans that are one of the main reasons states are hurting. Is the middle class defined as anyone that is UNION and getting a pension. What about the poor middle class that only has a 401k that has been destroyed or only Social Security to rely on. It seems that these WE THE PEOPLE are funding all the pensions also. The “Speech Giver” just keeps pouring money to these BROKEN special interest and it IS destroying the country!!!! Class WARFARE Union pensioners against all other of WE THE PEOPLE !!!! Here is an idea the Union pensioners should ONLY get back when they retire what they pay into just like the majority of WE THE PEOPLE get from Social Security!!!

what part of broke don’t the unions get— their arrogant clinging to wages and benefits that are unaffordable are the epitome of greed and selfishness– they should be ashamed of their behavior– i was a union member in my youth — they will realize very soon that this selfishness is making the grassroots mad and you know what happens when we get mad– we will v.o.t.e.
