Christie Refuses to Acknowledge Santorum Momentum: ‘I’m Really Not Feeling the Surge’

Chris Christie came out as an early supporter of Mitt Romney. As such, his “job,” so to speak, is to bolster his candidate‘s position while downplaying Romney’s opponents. And that’s what he did during an interview with Piers Morgan that aired on Tuesday. Case in point: Christie refuses to acknowledge that Rick Santorum — the new GOP frontrunner — is on a roll.

(Related: Christie unloads on Buffett — ‘Shut up’)

“Congratulations, but it doesn’t mean I have to buy it,” he said after Morgan broached the issue of a Santorum surge. “Listen, he won three contests in an evening, congratulations; and that’s great, good for him.”

“[But] I’m really not feeling the surge,” Christie added, “when we’ve given out, what, 10 percent of the delegates. Talk to me when we’re at 50, 60 percent of the delegates and then we can start seeing if anybody’s got a surge or not.”

He also went on to explain to Morgan why he won’t publicly criticize Romney (much to Morgan’s chagrin):

You can get more clips from the interview here.

There’s definitely an underlying anti-Mormon sentiment going on here, which really puzzles me. I judge people by their deeds, and I’ve always thought that was the Christian way, but I’m not seeing it here or on other conservative web sites or media.

There’s no group of people in America who are more patriotic and pro-family than Mormons. They don’t fill our jails or buy the drugs, they don’t stand in line for welfare, they don’t vote for Marxists, they raise solid citizens, they don‘t have televangelist money scandals and they don’t have child sex scandals. They work hard, they keep their neighborhoods clean, they take care of others and no one gives more to charity. Romney gave 16% to charity last year, Rick Santorum less than 2%. Those are deeds, and that’s what I judge people on.

You don’t have to agree with the Mormon church, but any objective, non-biased person cannot look at this group of people and see something very positive that much of the rest of the country is missing. I really admire them.

I think it is hysterical, all of the evangelicals that are having a fit because Rick is criticizing their religion saying it has been targeted and taken over by Satan. The same evangelicals that have been calling Mormonism a cult and Mormons Satan worshipers for years. It does not feel very good to have somone question your faith does it?
Actually, there is some truth to what Rick says. Many people in the world today have been tricked by the evil one. They fall into his snares and do not even realize they are caught. They become addicted to alcohol, drugs and pornoghraphy and then go to church on Sunday pretending that everything is just fine. They cry, “I am saved” in the light of day and continue on in sin after sin after sin in the dark. The evil one smiles and whispers, “I am no devil, for there is none.”

Yes. If Santorum wants to criticize Romney for flip-flopping on abortion, his nose should be clean. And if he was once pro choice then he has NO argument against Romney. Santorum criticized Romney for asking for an earmark to fund security at the Salt Lake Olympics, then we find out Rick voted FOR that earmark request. Now I know Rick never met an earmark he didn’t vote for, but that stinks of hypocracy.
