Christie Tries to Woo Illinois Businesses to New Jersey

After the state of Illinois’ legislature approved historic tax increases to help ease its budget crunch, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie pledged that he would work to woo over-taxed businesses to his state as he works to revitalize Garden State industries.

Christie‘s campaign is now in full swing with newspaper and radio ads popping up in major Illinois cities like Chicago and Springfield that highlight the governor’s commitment not to raise New Jersey taxes:

h/t Eyeblast

Christie himself appears in the ads, pledging to hold the line on taxes and promote growth through more job-friendly policies.  The governor’s spokeswoman, Maria Comella, adds that Christie is very hands-on when it comes to attracting new business ventures to New Jersey.

“The job creators of our country are mobile, and they are looking for a climate that provides the certainty and stability that comes with a fiscally responsible government that manages its budgets accordingly,” Christie said earlier this month. “In New Jersey, we mean business.”

Christie, a Republican, campaigned for GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady, who lost the November election to Democrat Pat Quinn. The winner inherited a budget shortfall equal to roughly half its general fund revenue, so Quinn has raised personal income taxes to 5 percent from 3 percent, and corporate business taxes to 9.5 percent from 7.3 percent.

New Jersey’s business tax rates are now slightly lower, at 9 percent for businesses with incomes over $100,000, and Christie undoubtedly hopes the new campaign will help to squelch his state’s reputation for being notoriously anti-business.

I own a small business in Illinois, this is a devastaing tax for me and all of Illinois. As with many other business in the state I will be relocating to Kentucky as soon as a location can be secured. My businesses departure surely wont make any headlines and most Illinois people wont even know that we left, but when all of the small businesses are gone and all that is left is goverenment jobs and no tax base to support them…….what then?

He believes in Sharia Law for New Jersey (the judge), find it on Mark Levine’s website…

I heard on of those ads on WLS the other day and was a little surprised. Then I thought it was great that some of the other states were making Illinois look a little silly. They will probably never learn. But it seems that the corporate tax in New Jersey isn’t that far off of the new one in Illinois, so I don’t see what NJ is crowing about.

I’d probably head to Texas or Florida…

lets no get carried away with this guy. new jersey is not business friendly. there is a state cap and trade bill here in jersey. the legislature is democratic i.e. communist. take those businesses to the south. they will be much better off.

I love it states competing with each other for new ideas that is what the Founding Fathers envisioned.
Let the failed states put out their ads and let’s watch them…
“Come to Illinois and join us in corruption” or “New York is your state if you are illegal, muslim or on the lam“ or ”California has sunshine[sometimes] and join us in bankruptcy“ or ”Massachusetts screwed up health care first”….oh yes this will work well.

An admirable man…smart enough to do the job, yet humble enough to acknowledge that he’s not ready to run for the presidency. Ironically, Christie would most likely be the best man for the job…concerned for the welfare of the state, not his own political ambitions.

These politicians have to understand business aren’t going to move just because one governor lowersthe taxes. What happens when the governor is gone and the next governor raises the taxes back up.

Here is the problem for any business contemplating a move to New Jersey: The next governor may be a union hack Democrat who would continue the tax and spend policies of Christie’s predecessors. Why not move to a state that has a history of electing conservative, business-loving politicians and eliminate the uncertainty?

I live in Illinois and have been telling the dumb ass democrats that we were not competitive and were runnig business and businesses out of the state but all they know how to do is welfare and special interest projects and tax more. They are a bunch of idiots who know NOTHING about how to run a state that should be run like a business because they have no business experience.

I think this is GREAT!!! When it starts hitting “tax-and-spend“ liberals in the ”pocketbook” so-to-speak, they will have to change there ways. By Christie doing a good job in New Jersey, and stealing other states revenue, the other governors will have to play catch-up, and also put Christie’s good policies in the spotlight!
I heard somewhere that he might run in ‘12. God I hope so…

I don‘t know why I didn’t see that coming. I immediately thought of the surrounding States since they’ve been talking about it for so long.
As an Illinois resident I see the departure of business as devastating but there is no way I could fault them for making responsible decisions to go.

As a Illinois Business owner with my father, I called my dad shortly after the tax hike was approved to see which state would become the new home of our business. Since we usually invest our earnings right back into our company; a 2% raise on our income tax after the 2.2% on business tax is equal to 4.156% raise on anything we take.

So in short, we’ve got 14.025% state tax, however we haven’t even added the federal taxes into that, but wait we’ve got Chicago local taxes too! Yea, New Jersey sounds nice as does 46 other states.

@BoilitDown.. I am with you.. my husband doesn’t even work in IL..but our house is in IL we are seriously thinking about renting it out and just moving to the state in which he works..so it’s NOT going to be JUST businesses that move but the TAXPAYERS.. IL is going to see a real DIP in their revenue.. just like they see a DIP in revenue whenever they raise taxes on ANYTHING and people go out of state to shop.. Dems just DON’T get it.. it is a shame since I left CHICAGO because of their taxes and bans on everything.. now I don‘t see the point of even staying in the state and paying for the government pensions when we in the private sector won’t be getting one..

Maybe, just maybe, Christie may be the one that can unite the conservatives into an unstoppable voting bloc. It sure as hell ain’t going to be Newt, Palin, Bachman or any of the other better known republicans. They are all way too controversial. It is going to be someone like Christie or Lt. Col. West. It will take someone who will ignore and not engage with the democrats, rather just plow ahead and brush them aside. I hope he comes out of the woodwork soon.
