Schumer to Jewish Audience: Arabs and Palestinians ‘Don’t Believe There Should Be An Israel’

The left-leaning blog ThinkProgress isn’t happy with Sen. Chuck Schumer’s statement that Palestinians and Arabs “don’t believe there should be an Israel.” Here’s the text of the statement Schumer made at a Jewish function this past Sunday:
The reason there is no peace in the Middle East is very simple. It’s because the majority of Palestinians and the majority of Arabs don’t believe there should be an Israel. It’s that simple. Anyone who tries to figure out a way to solve this conflict without realizing that truth will never get anywhere.
ThinkProgress cites various polls that seem to contradict Schumer’s statements:
Polling conducted in 2009 indicated that 74 percent of Palestinians support a two-state solution based around the contours of the international consensus. Polling conducted in 2010 found that 71 percent support peace negotiations with Israel and that a majority of Palestinians oppose rocket attacks on the country.

By this, he tells the audience that even though there is a majority, he implies there IS a minority of Arabs and Palestinians that WANT Israel to exist. It is also these people who ARE firing rockets into Israel whether the plurality of the people agree to it or not, the rockets have continued and people like Ahjmadinejad are still pushing that agenda.

Posted on June 1, 2011 at 4:11amI think it’s important to note that generally, when someone is painted as believing that “state of Israel shouldn’t exist,” it is generally meant in the sense that the individual is against an explicitly ethnic/religious state ruling over an area with significant ethnic/religious minority populations. We can debate the worthiness of THAT position, but the point is it‘s a very different argument than simply suggesting the nation shouldn’t exist – the phrasing of which implies a desire to wipe out the Israeli people.

In that case sir, I do not believe the nations of, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, or Libya should exist. They should not be allowed to govern themselves. They should not have any political power or even a voice in the affairs of their people or self interests. Oh we wont “kill them all” but we will force them to be unwelcome nomad wherever they go in the world… just like you so eloquently stated about the state of Israel… because when people say “That Country should not exist” they are not talking about the extermination of anyone at all.

I’m 48 years old and every administration, Republican and Democrat have done nothing worthwhile to advance the notion of real peace. The United States has a real double standard in it’s support for Israel and the amount of aid that they recieve from us. Israel recieves billions in aid, far more that any other country and they recieve loan guarntees. Also the way the legislation is written, Israel doesn’t have to pay the money back. I wish my banker would give me that option. It should also be pointed out, that all other countries recieving aid from the United States have to spend that money in the United States, but Israel is not required to do that. So, what does Israel decide to do? I’ll tell you….they decide to spend our tax dollars expanding settlements further in to the Palastinian Territory, which is against U.S. foreign policy. The United States will never be a legitimate broker for peace as long as no administration is willing to hold Israel accountable for the their actions, but of course that will never happen because in this country, if anyone says anything about a lack of fairness they’re labeled as a hater of the state of Israel. These policies are a huge joke and anyone who has studied history and U.S. foreign policy knows this. Israel is an ally, but we don’t get much bang for our foreign policy buck.

I think you‘ve misunderstood what I’m trying to say. I’m not suggesting the Jewish people be expelled from the Israeli and Palestinian territories, I’m suggesting they stop trying to advance an ethno-religious state upon an area with such significant diversity. Put another way, I think the only reasonable end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the so-called “one-state solution,” where a single non-Judaic non-Muslim, secular state controls the entirety of the territory and all citizens within have full democratic rights. Jews and Arabs lived together for decades before 1948 (and largely peacefully as well, something a lot of people tend to overlook) and I don‘t think it’s a stretch to believe they could do so again.
As for the list of various other states in the region – I don’t think a lot of those states (here referring to governments) should exist. But that‘s not the same as saying the nation’s shouldn’t exist. Many of the government are either tyrannical or theocratic, and neither of those systems allows all the people within them to prosper.

The“ball” is not in the “Jewish court”, it’s in the Palestinain court. and if the game is going to continue they have “to serve the ball” or make concessions on their ridiculous demands on Israel.
