Church Sign Goes Viral: ‘God Prefers Kind Atheists Over Hateful Christians’ (POLL)

Christians and atheists are typically at odds, at least when it comes to theology. So when a church posted a sign that praised “kind atheists” over “hateful Christians,” it’s no surprise the message gained a great deal of attention. While some were offended, many more were supportive of the sentiment the church was attempting to spread.

The United Methodist Church is reporting that Rev. Tom Tate of Rose City Park United Methodist Church in Portland, Oregon, chose to make the bold statement about the state of Christian character and the need for believers to be nice and loving to those around them. The church sign, which reads, “God Prefers Kind Atheists Over Hateful Christians,” has been spreading wildly via social media, prompting hundreds of calls to the church from across the nation and the globe.

While the message may be a tough pill to swallow for some Christians who believe that non-belief is a tragic societal occurrence — even more tragic than Christians behaving badly — Kay Pettygrove, an administrator at the church, says that positivity has been the predominate sentiment. Pettygrove claims that there has been 30 positive comments for each negative one and says that the church is “flabbergasted” over the response.

“I got an email from a young Mormon man saying, ‘Thank you so much. It made me rethink how I treat people,’” she explains. “Many atheists have said, ‘If there were more churches like yours, we would probably reconsider.’”

Rev. Tate, whose church has 385 members, claims that the sign shows “radical hospitality” to those who feel alienated from faith systems.

“It has touched a reservoir for people in a way that is very surprising for me,” Tate proclaimed.

What do you think about the sign’s message. Do you agree? Take our poll, below:

Certainly not all, but a good amount of the “christians” who post on the blaze should pay close attention to this. The purely evil, vitriolic, spewing of hate that goes on here at times is far from what christianity is suppose to stand for. You know who you are!

How you can get “prefers” out of “wrath” is quite amusing. And the Lord Jesus “Christ” is the one who said that. It is the “Christian” position.

The “church” sign justifies whom God condemns.

First of all, God is not a respecter of persons. Romans 2:11. He doesn’t prefer saints over sinners or “kind sinners” over “hateful saints.” However, only those who believe in Jesus has he given the right to be called children of God. John 1:12-13. We are not justified before God by how we behave; we are justified by our faith in the saving grace of Jesus, who sacrificed himself on the cross.

Christians who have given their lives to Jesus are not automatically transformed into a “kind” person. A “hateful” Christian, whatever that means, is likely a person who is fully justified by his faith in Christ’s redemptive sacrifice on the cross, but who may not be far enough along in the sanctification process (the process of becoming more like Jesus.)

I submit that there are a lot fewer “kind atheists” than there are kind Christians and that there are a lot more hateful atheists than “hateful Christians.” In the end, the “kind atheist” chooses to reject the sovereignty of God and dies in his sin and perishes eternally.

This church sign is born out of ignorant theology.

      Well…

Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear…. Do not be frightened from this inquiry by any fear of its consequences. If it ends in a belief that there is no God, you will find incitements to virtue in the comfort and pleasantness you feel in its exercise, and the love of others which it will procure you. If you find reason to believe there is a God, a consciousness that you are acting under his eye, & that he approves you, will be a vast additional incitement; if that there be a future state, the hope of a happy existence in that increases the appetite to deserve it; if that Jesus was also a God, you will be comforted by a belief of his aid and love. In fine, I repeat, you must lay aside all prejudice on both sides…-Thomas Jefferson.

What are you using to determine that the people spewing are in fact “Christians” as you claim? Or is that just your impression based on the stance they happen to take?

I think there is reason to believe that anyone being “hateful,” and I mean that in the truest sense of the word, is not a Christian who has been washed in the blood of the Lamb and realizes that they are saved by grace through faith alone. But, if the definition of hate is lowered to include differences of opinion that make someone else feel uncomfortable, well, that’s just life. I may disagree with someone, and my disagreement may make them uncomfortable, but that doesn’t mean I “hate” them. If they think that then maybe they need to do some self-examination.

So funny. Okay, yes we are supposed to love and get along with people as much as it is in our power, but do you think we are to keep loving killers, abortionists, and child molesters so that they can continue in their sin and hurt people??? We are to “Love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and love our neighbors as ourselves”…..Okay….So if my neighbor is sneaking to my back door with a big kitchen knife to cut off my head….you think I want my neighbor on the other side to close his window and “not hate”? No….I want him to try and stop the murder and/or blow the guy away if thats what it takes to stop him from killing me.
Now, if I was an iddy bitty babe…would I want to be born, or ripped out of my mothers womb?? Wouldn’t I want someone to try and talk my mom out of killing me? The word “hate” gets thrown around way too much these days.

@Micheal61 While that is good, Christians are not saved or go to heaven because they follow the commandments, we are saved by the love and grace shown by Jesus and by accepting his GIFT of salvation that changes your perspectives and heart and from that change the works follows. No one is righteous on works alone, and we are all selfish and self serving at our core. Christian gauge other Christians by the love they express to others, if “Christians” are hateful they are not true Christians and Atheists should also recognize that fact as well and not to judge all by the bad apples.

There is no going over or around the fence..for works will not get one to heaven but a person who has accepted Yashua as Lord and Savior and who loves Him by keeping His commands..will enter the kingdom of YAH..All gifts will fall away..but the greatest gift of all is love.. James 2:18 show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” If you have trouble having faith..try praying to our heavenly Father for it..Ask and it shall be given..seek and you will find..knock and the door will be opened to you..

Now about the hateful Christians here?
I haven’t really seen that here. What I have seen are Christians who have the attitude of “I’m tired of being silent, I’m tired of being pushed around, I’m tired of being told to shut up”.
Now to many leftists this comes across as being hateful… or the current over used buzz word “vitriolic”. However a leftist can call names, impugn character, malign and flat out lie about people, situations or history with a clear conscience and nobody calling for accountability. We all know this. Even you know this. Which is why so many of us no longer care what you have to say, or what you think about us.

Perhaps that is where real faith lies?

Where your faith in a God, is so genuine in the belief, that your God is above such petty things as whether or not someone claims of belief in him, choosing to care about the content of one’s character instead?

Or perhaps someone’s faith relies on biblical inerrancy, strict adherence to a religion created by narcissistic men with god complexes, which forgives everything so long as the ‘believer’ continues to believe in the “god” they promote?

So I suppose it boils down to what kind of faith someone has…

Do you believe in a God of compassion, kindness, one who cares about what is in one’s soul, above the petty bickering of the earth’s religions which only amount to “I’m right!”, “No, I’M RIGHT!”, “Yer both wrong! I’m right!”

Do you believe in a God of hubris, surrounding himself by yes-men, feeding his megalomania, watching in glee as the people of the earth’s religions fight over him for the right to bask in his magnificence, not caring at all what is in their hearts?

I know many people of both of these types.

      I’m an atheist.

      Guess why?

we entered into His rest..the passover lamb was him.. the rest on the Sabbath..was the rest in Him.. When He came upon the man who was selling birds on the Sabbath..He told the man..if you know what you do..then you are blessed..if you know not what you do..you are cursed. He also broke Sabbatical laws..because they were the laws of man..THe Sabbath was made for man..not the man for the Sabbath.

I would also have to mention that for some people claiming to be Christian because they go to church and all that. That is the same as someone going into a garage and thereby claiming to be a car. The sad thing is that it makes it look bad on God more than anything even though God can take that and much more without any problem whatsoever. Like they say, a tree is known by it’s fruit. God does not give out rotten fruit. I pray always for these people who say they are Christian yet they live by the morals that they decide is right or wrong and don’t bother to ask God what is right or wrong. Unfortunately, they will find out that their own morals will NEVER supersede God’s Morals.

What “go along to get along” Bible are some of you reading from – I got news for a lot of you, when Jesus returns he is not going to go around kissing everyone’s feet – His first stop may be that Church where he will destroy that sign like he did the Tables of Tabernacle.

The Bible tells us “ALL” Men have sinned and come short of the Glory of God – Not some. but ALL. My faith is not in Man – my faith is in the God of Abraham Issac and Jacob.

The Bible tells us that sin will NOT come between God and Man – If you have unconfessed Sin in your life and have not excepted Jesus Christ and your Lord and Savor – your not going to Heaven.

If your a Christian and you steal from your employees and give some of that money to the Church – you’ve sinned twice.

Being a Christian means that you will be judge for your word and deed. It’s called accountability – and you will be held accountable.

Don’t get mad at me – I’m in Sales and God is in Management!

There are at least 12 Scriptures in the Bible that discuss being born again – look them up or ask Man of God that knows the Bible to teach you.

Ladies – when the Bible mentions Men – it is known that that means Men and Women.

Depends on what one defines as hell… some people see ‘hell’ as a fiery underworld where bodies burn…

Now given enough time, bodies of people that die from a secular geological perspective will become dust (some may become fossils) but ultimately in time, they will then continue to erode and desposit themselves across the planet as dustl… Now in time that dust will make its way to subduction zones, where it will be pulled into the earth, and undergo metamorphosis (metamorphic rock), some may put into contact with nearby hot spots or underground magma, and melt. This become ignaceous. Others may end up adding to the future oil reserves… Now if the oil reserves ignite (sometimes happens naturally) you also have fiery pits… It is these fiery places that could be seen as a veritable hell if anyone could see it from the inside. Of course some do get to experience magma after it erupts from the earth as lava. Some like those in Pompei may live long enough to see themselves killed by the fiery death from the earth…

Tongue planted firmly in cheak. But where do ideas of Hell come from, if one believes all ideas come from superstition?

So yes, in a way, people may end up in ‘hell’…

Likewise, the metaphors of being sent to the ‘Abyss’, associate with the sea or other deep watery places… The watery metaphors are actually pretty blatant.

Perhaps not surprisingly, not all Christian denominations believe in Greek/Romanesque ideas of hell, but have varying interpretations, including non-literal interpretations…

It is believed that some Catholic artists and writers were inspired by pre-columbian religions that included human sacrifice in their interpretations of hell. Likewise, experience in WW1 inspired interpretations of hell in the 20th century artwork and writing. Gives more meaning to Sherman’s phrase, ‘war is hell’…

I liked the Catholic interpretation of the afterlife. If you’re mostly good, but partially bad, you go to a place they invented called Purgatory where all the stains on your soul are washed away for a period of time. The more stains, the longer you have to wait in Purgatory. To shorten your stay in Purgatory, give buttloads of worldly wealth to the church for the dispensation of an “indulgence”.

      What a racket.

Exactly. A hateful so-called ‘Christian’ is going to the same place as an atheist who denies God. You know where a person stands spiritually by the fruit they bear, as Christ said. An apple tree cannot bear oranges, nor an orange tree apples. A person full of hate cannot also be full of God (God is love, 1 John 4). They can be angry, and can even hate some things, such as sin and evil (Ecclesiastes 3: there is a time to love, and a time to hate). But they cannot be filled with hate and be a Christian. Galations 5: The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control. Can a Christian sin? Of course. They’re forgiven, not perfect. Caveat: this is from a Biblical point of view, and I’m aware that not everyone believes in the Bible. This is just giving the perspective from a Biblical point of view, not trying to impose my views on anyone else. In a free country, everyone can believe whatever he or she wants, and that’s a good thing.

It is unfortunate that so many of our fellow citizens become embroiled in pointless arguments about the goodness/evil of the various factions. Just as Desotic Progressives benefit by driving citizens apart with fractionalizing ideologies, so does the spirit and intent of Satan benefit from the fractionalization of those who seek guidance for living from their ostensibly studious leadership.

The founding fathers were about as studious a group of men as you could find in the late 18th century. They read the professors of human foibles and common sense dating back centuries. They correctly concluded that only one form of government would both unleash and encourage the individual and communal self-interests that built this nation. They offered a unique religion of state with the ideology: Don’t mess with the person or property of any other honorable citizen. I.e. Live love and protect liberty.

This same idea is to be found in the teaching of many religions that encourage honorable behaviors, not the least of which is Christianity. But at the same time, we see our brothers in honorable behaviors becoming competitors for who can build the biggest church, capture the largest membership, sell the largest mansions in heaven . . . all of which are activities that dilute an honorable citizen’s REAL purpose for living. Do well, share your surplus, protect the liberty of yourself and others. All the rest is window dressing.

Not necessarily. All Christians are human and and as such sinful. We should all strive to be good and do good; to be more God-like. Some of us are farther along in our Christian journey than others.

Some people profess Christianity without even getting to know Christ. Perhaps, the offenders here will recognize the err of their way and strive to do better.

Read Jefferson‘s writings and you see even he talked about the ’so-called Christians’, that were anything but (in his time), and how they were corrupting the ‘religions’. It inspired his whole “question with boldness” comment in his letter to Greeley (sp?).

In the letter he also made it important to question everything, if it lead people to God or no god, either way the person had to strive to be a better person, charity, love, etc.

I “hate” to tell you all this but if, out of love for men’s souls, you do not withhold or corrupt the truth of the gospel, you will be labeled a hateful Christian. It’s quite the irony that because of love you will be hated, but that was exactly our Saviour’s lot as well. Look where his love got him from the religious world. When you proclaim the gospel to the lost you will be labeled hateful. You know its the truth.

In addition, most of you responding here, if you were on the receiving end of what Christ spoke, particularly to the lost religious leaders, you would be quite sure he was “hateful”.

      > Some of us are farther along in our Christian journey than others.

The problem with that is, is different people have different perspectives.

We always overlook, ignore and even excuse the character traits of someone who we like, and choose to have/keep as a friend.

What a genuine Christian sees as “God-like”, and what an atheist sees as “God-like” are very very different types of people.

Then you have the different religions having different views on who God is, old/new testament, etc.

How can a people be more “God-like”, when a people can’t even decide what God is like to begin with?

      You have an empty argument.

The problem is the level of love that is required is the deep kind that allows you to share the gospel even though you might be crucified for it. So…..Peter….do you love me?

It’s one thing for a person to believe in Christ and accept him as their savior.

It’s another to follow his ways: in addition to the ten commandments, “love thy neighbor”, “judge not lest ye be judged”, “let he who is without sin cast the first stone”. Some don’t obey these lessons, even going against what he taught, hence the “hateful Christians”.

You can‘t truly call yourself a Christian if you don’t follow his ways, it’s akin to calling yourself a vegetarian while eating cheeseburgers.

We all go threw times when we are not acting as we should, but does the sign refer to a person who professes Christ, but is not a real Christian? Only a mouth pleaser? or does it refer to a person who has professed Christ, but is stuck in a place of bitterness and hatefullness? I know several athiests, and I don’t find them to be the kindest people on the planet either. Moth that I kow are know it all asses, who are just trying to recruit to their relegion. (athiesm is a relegion)… I HATE athiesm, and the lies it spreads, but I do not hate the athiests. I guess that I do hate those who purposely spread lies, to try to keep others form getting into heaven, not the run of the mill athiest, but the professor, or media type athiest, and I will work on that, but I have been to athiest rallys, and to pickets, and heard the (so called) loving athiests chanting about bringing back the lions. This is a chant about how they want to return to the days when Rome threw Christians to the lions. I am really doubtful about the whole premise behind the sign, and doubt the pastor as well…

Maybe depends on how you define “hateful” – I think it’s okay to hate sin, but love the sinner. Just how ungracious and unloving was Jesus? Think of all kinds of rather nasty things he was happy to say. Calling people “white-washed tombs,” “blind fools,” “hypocrites” and the like does not seem to be the epitome of love and charm. Publicly rebuking Peter and saying “Get behind me, Satan!” is not exactly how you win friends and influence people.

Just how ungracious and unloving was Paul? Referring to his opponents as dogs and the like would make him very unpopular in many Christian circles today. And poor Peter, he too was publicly rebuked by Paul as well. ‘Oh, but we are not to air our dirty laundry in public’ we are told today. And just what was he thinking when he absolutely blasted the Galatians? Where is the love Paul? Where is the grace?

The truth is, the use of harsh, even provocative language is found throughout the Bible. Jesus and others used it constantly. The use of satire, irony, mockery, ridicule and sarcasm is used time and time again.
When biblically illiterate liberals proclaim their Kumbaya nonsense about the Bible, they usually forget all the times when Jesus and many others rebuked and called out people who were the liars and hypocrites of that day.

    Rev. 3:15-17 (NLT)
“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish you were one or the other! [16] But since you are like lukewarm water, I will spit you out of my mouth! [17] You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!‘ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.

Lukewarm water makes a disgusting drink. The church in Laodicea had become lukewarm and thus distasteful and repugnant. The believers didn’t take a stand for anything; indifference had led to idleness. By neglecting to do anything for Christ, the church had become hardened and self-satisfied, and it was destroying itself. There is nothing more disgusting than a halfhearted, in-name-only Christian who is self-sufficient. Don’t settle for following God halfway. Let Christ fire up your faith and get you into the action.

I agree with the churches statement on this sign. Even though I’m not a Christian I can respect Christian the right to believe; last Sunday I also attended service at my friends church where I was kind and respectful to others. Respect does go along way in making people like you.

I suggest another word for “respect” is “honorable behavior”. When one embraces liberty, the fundamental right of an honorable citizen to be left alone, then no honorable citizen has anything to fear from any other honorable citizen. Unfortunately, too many organizations who cast their images in the guise of the ‘one true religion’ seem to miss the point of our founding father’s teachings entirely. There was never a separation of religion and government as claimed by poor students of our founding. There was in fact a prohibition for the state to define a “one true religion” and compel honorable citizens to subscribe to it’s theology, dogma and business model.

I will suggest further that our Declaration of Independence -AND- constitution combine to described the REAL “one true religion.”

Example: Suppose some isolated soul from the furthest reaches of our planet were to suddenly find him/herself confronted with imminent death while surrounded by a host of enthusiastic religionists all attempting to sell the doomed individual on the merits of their particular form of worship. I suggest that the ignorant, unsaved soul is more deserving of a place in paradise than most self proclaimed pious if he/she can assert: “I strived to violate the liberty of no one; and corrected my errors as they were discovered.”

The God worthy of worship by honorable humans would welcome such piety with open arms irrespective of the name of their ‘church’ or even no church at al

    I agree.

The greatest commandment is to love God. The second is to love your neighbor as yourself.

    Love is the answer.

A person’s actions are a great indicator of where their heart is.

It’s no wonder it was a Methodist church…they are very community oriented. Good job!

Methodist theology is based on false belief.

I know many, may Methodists. They are very kind and – as I said – very community oriented; Habitat for Humanity, etc…

I’m not too knowledgeable concerning their doctrine, but I always question someone who slams another’s religion of being a cult or false or what have you.

I would rather live in a community of considerate atheists than among hypocritical Christians.

Did you ever consider that they might be hypocritical Atheists posing as Christians?
Jesus said to be wise as serpents, and simple as doves.
And “By their fruits ye shall know them.”
      It’s not that hard.

Uh, right. I remember reading that passage…. uh, no, come to think of it, I don’t.

JESUS prefers that we come to HIM, turn from our wicked ways, humble ourselves and turn our lives over to HIM. Period.

hateful CHRISTIANS is an oxymoron. If someone you know is a “hateful CHRISTIAN”, that person is a “hateful CHURCH-GOER”, not a CHRISTIAN. Real CHRISTIANS ARE NOT hate-filled.

GOD doesn‘t prefer people who don’t believe in HIM…. although HE does still long for a change of your heart…

It’s my understanding that we will be judged on our heart.

The difficulty my non-Mormon friends have is the question of “what about a good person who didn’t know who Jesus was – are they going to hell?”

The fact of having to be baptized in order to be saved is not in dispute…so does that mean God doesn’t love these people?

Love is the answer. God has a plan, our part is to do our best to be our best. He will take care of the rest.

Jesus died for EVERYBODY who lives, will live or has ever lived.

Good for this church. Something to think about.

You are mistaken – God does not judge based on the heart. If that were true we would all be doomed Read Mattew 15:18-20 if you still believe the Bible is the Word of God. We are saved by Grace through Faith and that not of ourselvers least any man shgould boast.

      @Brother_Ed Mormons aren’t even Christians.
Yes, Jesus died for everyone, but that does NOT mean that everyone is saved. If you reject His word and His gift of grace, then you aren’t saved. Mormons and JW are NOT saved, they are accused for following false gospels.

      LittleMiss… (Mormon, by the way)

I’m wondering, and this is a serious question. So if Christians believe in a stark, yes or no heaven/hell ideal, what happens to the babies that weren’t baptized, those who never did, never could have known about any Christian faith? Straight to hell? I’m not mocking, being sardonic, making a challenge, etc. – I just never have heard an answer straight from a Christian before. Anyone else who has an answer, please share. Just know that I’m not some ex-mormon trying to find a different religion or something. ;)

Davinci, Baptism has nothing to do with your salvation. It is an act of obedience (submission). One is held to their knowledge and understanding.

ICNIVAD…I am Baptist, and, as a Baptist, I have been taught that there is an age of accountability. No baby or young child that dies goes to hell. King David lost a baby and was assured his child was in Heaven. Baptist do not believe in infant baptism because you will not find this anywhere in the King James Bible concerning the New Testament Church. I say KJB only because I know there are other bibles and bible companions that might talk of such stuff but I believe these others just cause confusion and contradict. In Acts 8:36,37 Philip is talking to a eunuch who wants to know what hinders me to be baptized and Philip answers him directly and states he “must believe with all thine heart.” A baby can not make this decision on his own.
