Cincinnati Landlord in Hot Water Over Posting ‘Whites Only’ Swimming Pool Sign

COLUMBUS, Ohio (The Blaze/AP) — A Cincinnati landlord who claimed a black girl‘s hair products clouded an apartment complex’s swimming pool discriminated against the child by posting a poolside “White Only” sign, an Ohio civil rights panel said Thursday in upholding a previous finding.
The Ohio Civil Rights Commission voted 4-0 against reconsidering its finding from last fall. There was no discussion.
The group found on Sept. 29 that Jamie Hein, who is white, violated the Ohio Civil Rights Act by posting the sign at a pool at the duplex where the teenage girl was visiting her parents.
The parents filed a discrimination charge with the commission and moved out of the duplex in the racially diverse city to “avoid subjecting their family to further humiliating treatment,” the commission said in a release announcing its finding.
An investigation revealed that Hein in May posted on the gated entrance to the pool an iron sign that stated “Public Swimming Pool, White Only,” the commission statement said.
CNN provides a report:
Several witnesses confirmed that the sign was posted, and the landlord indicated that she posted it because the girl used chemicals in her hair that would make the pool “cloudy,” according to the commission.
The girl’s father, Michael Gunn, in brief comments Thursday, described his shock last spring when venturing out for a lunch break by the pool.
“My initial reaction to seeing the sign was of shock, disgust and outrage,” Gunn said. He also told the commission that his daughter was saddened months later to learn they moved from the apartment complex “was in a way related to the color of her skin.” Gunn declined to speak with reporters.
Hein has repeatedly declined to comment and did not attend the hearing. Messages were left at her lawyer’s office Wednesday and Thursday.
“I was trying to protect my assets,” she told the commission’s housing enforcement director in a Sept. 27 interview.
Racial discrimination has particular resonance in Cincinnati, whose population is 45 percent black, far higher than the rest of Ohio, which is about 12 percent black. Surrounding Hamilton County is 26 percent black.
Cincinnati was the scene of race riots in April 2001 police and demonstrators clashed in a blighted neighborhood following the shooting of a black suspect by police.
The commission’s statement said that its investigation concluded that the posting of such a sign “restricts the social interaction between Caucasians and African-Americans and reinforces discriminatory actions aimed at oppressing people of color.”
The case is to be referred to the Ohio attorney general’s office, which would represent the commission’s findings before an administrative law judge. That judge would determine any penalties, which could include a cease-and-desist order and punitive damages.
It still would be possible for the parties to reach a settlement before resorting to legal action.
Any decision by the administrative judge could be appealed to Hamilton County Common Pleas Court in Cincinnati.

Posted on January 14, 2012 at 12:10amWe have a very large public pool here in Lexington ky that out of about 4 of the largest public pools here, attracts the largest percentage of blacks. I would estimate it to be about 70-75% black at times and the water DOES get cloudy. You also get a “film” on your lips that is simply disgusting……..many of us (friends and family) really tried to give it a chance and didnt believe it was related to the high % of blacks but that greasy film was so consistantly there and in no other pool none of us really doubt it now and we never use that pool. Add to that the fact many of the blacks get in for free and wahlah ya got yourself a pool that requires alot more of the cities resources to keep it “equal”.

Posted on January 14, 2012 at 1:56amI agree with Tom. It is standard to require that people shower before getting into a pool, and that will rinse off any excess oil or conditioner that is likely to come off in the pool. In the worst case scenario, the pool’s owner could have approached the family and asked her specifically to make sure that she rinses her hair well before getting into the pool.
My daughter has to use a lot of conditioner to make her hair look good. I would expect her to rinse off before getting into a pool.

BULL! There were no “race riots” in Cincinnati in 2001. What happened was a black dude was running from police, turned around and reached for his pants, which is all an officer needs to fire his weapon to defend himself. The officer shot and killed him. Officer was white. All the usual suspects showed up and said this is white on black violence, blah, blah, blah. Black residents started destroying and burning buildings IN THEIR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD and fought with police in riot gear.
No “race riots” took place. Race riots imply that blacks and whites were fighting eachother out of hatred, It was just a bunch of morons destoying their own neighborhood and looting for things that they wanted but didn’t own.

Posted on January 13, 2012 at 5:13amVery True. I live here! Lets not forget how they, blacks, ventured out into all of the suburbs and looted the stores like Deveroes off of Glenway. Lets also note the fact that the naacp and others groups chose to put the National underground railroad museum here shortly there after. Oh, by the way, it is closing due to low attendance. Did you also know that they force the surrounding White school kids to go but not the blacks? They also put a major guilt trip on these young kids when they go through it. There are areas and establishments in Cinci. that are definitely black only. They just don’t post signs, mainly because if its made of metal they’ll rip it off the building and scrap it. I don’t feel bad about this one bit. They have held the town hostage for ten years and its isn’t getting any better. Look, also, to the changes the police have put in place. What a failure. Now they have Hamilton county Sheriffs patrolling down there because the black city cops can’t handle it. Poor them, they are sooo miss treated!!

Says he‘s bound and determined to prove that he’s got a Black man in his family tree. I honor him every summer by delivering some home fried chicken, with chitlins, and watermelon with a Styrofoam ball and chain on my ankle and a slave belt around my neck. He’s somewhere around 90 – 95 years old and his wife gets a huge kick out of us. We’ll sit and talk about all the “N” and “C” words for hours. If we can’t take the time to laugh about the prejudices our rear holes pucker up and we squeak when we fart.
He says that I’m the son he wished he had. They were never able to have kids of their own. He‘s about 5’5 and his wife is even smaller. When we go to the store he puffs out his chest and announces me as his youngest son. I’m Black as the ace of spades, 6′7 and right at 285 as of this morning. An older cash register lady says she can see the family resemblance.

——————–
I feel ya brother. I’ve lived in Ohio for several years now and run into some crazies now and then. Mostly what I’ve found is that if you treat people with respect and actively support the community where you live, biases fall like leaves.
When I first bought my property there was some trepidation because there just aren’t many Black families here. The Union worker next door (we’re separated by 3.5 acres) hated me at first, and he‘s still leery because he believes I’d shoot him if he “trespassed” on my property with his Union drivel. I even have a sign in my yard stating that. :D A couple years ago he was leaving to drop his kids at school, and for work and the roads were a mess. He lost control and went into the ditch and got banged up pretty bad. His kids were stuck in the car with him. His 6 year old son had what we found out later was a broken leg, and the seat belt cut his shoulder. Long story short, we got them out and the dad and son to the hospital for treatment. Took 7 hours to get his vehicle out of the ditch. His other 4 kids stayed with me until he and his son were released from the hospital the next day.
The room in my house his older kids liked was my “spiritual room”. Complete with altar, Menorah, the Cross of Christ, computers, and 144 Bibles (12 languages) open to various current study sections.
The ice was broken and within a year the country life accepted me as no different.

Posted on January 12, 2012 at 10:03pmShe should have put up a keep out sign instead. Or keep a old junk yard dog in the pool area, that will keep people from using her pool. Or common sence would have told her to just not have apool at all.

Well Az I take it that your asking if I’m Racist. The answer to that would depend on what she looked like. If she looked like Halley Berry I’d hit that, but if she looked like Oprah, then Hideous,Gila Monster,Vile, Disqusting Skank, would fit, and there is not enough LIQUOR IN THE WORLD…….
So did I answer your Question?………..

Because this America where you are free to choose who you like and dislike unless they are black. Then you are forced to accept them. Go to school with them even if they dont live in your neighborhood. Hire them even if you dont like them. You must accept them and not say anything or you will be showing your ignorance and how you are a backwards racist.
