‘Citizen Militias’: Arizonans Vow to Take Matters Into Their Own Hands to Protect Border

Arizona militias say they are done waiting for the government to protect their borders after state lawmakers shot down a bill that would have created a state-sanctioned border militia unit.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that militia volunteers remain committed to stopping what they say is an invasion of smugglers and illegal immigrants, even after being denied state organization status.

The defeated bill would have created a 300-member volunteer militia at the request of the governor. They would have been be armed; however, a provision in the bill required that members be screened in order to prevent violent extremists from joining. You can read the text of the bill here.

Like almost any topic related to illegal immigration and the U.S.-Mexico border, the issue is extremely contentious. The Daily Star reports:

A longtime Arizona border-militia leader, Jack Foote, worked for a period with the group that wrote the bill and said its demise is motivating sympathizers of the border-militia movement.

“We have now washed our hands of our state’s Legislature,” Foote, of Cottonwood, said via email. “Now we are going to do things our own way.”

But critics of that movement, such as Mark Pitcavage of the Anti-Defamation League, said the border-militia idea is extremist in its nature, not just at its outer edges.

“Some are explicitly white supremacist,” said Pitcavage, who has studied extreme right-wing movements for years. “The others may not be white supremacists but may well be racists.”

Critics of militia groups often point to the case of Jason Todd “J.T.” Ready, a self-proclaimed neo-Nazi and border-militia leader, who shot and killed four people before taking his own life. He was being investigated by the FBI at the time.

The latest legislative blow to citizen militias in Arizona is part of a growing list defeats.

The fight to form a lawful border militia in Arizona began in 2007, when former Sen. Jack Harper introduced a bill to sanction a state Homeland Security Force that could be used on the border if called upon by the governor, The Star reports. However, then-Gov. Janet Napolitano, now Department of Homeland Security secretary, vetoed the legislation, calling it unnecessary because the governor is already within his or her right to call up a militia.

Harper and others pushed the issue again in 2011 and were able to pass a new bill to establish an Arizona State Guard. The victory was shallow, however, as no money was provided establish the guard and the toothless bill made little impact.

Then drawing from the public laws of 22 other states, state Sen. Sylvia Allen put together a team of people to write a bill that called for $1.9 million to fund the new volunteer militia last year.

But like the others, the legislation faced heavy opposition from lawmakers and was eventually killed. Among the bill’s opponents were Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and head of the Arizona National Guard, Maj. Hugo Salazar who worried about the militia group being armed and that he hadn’t been consulted enough, The Star reports.

“All this does is, it legitimizes the Minutemen-type model of enforcement,” said state Sen. Steve Gallardo, a staunch opponent of the bill.

The reported surge in border militia activity in Arizona, as Fox News Latino points out, seems to contradict a report published in the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Spring 2012 Intelligence Report that claimed the “nativist extremist” movement had collapsed.

The same report links the Tea Party to the armed militia groups, saying the Tea Party movement has become “home to many nativist extremists.” The center argues the interest of the two groups intersected in 2009 over President Obama’s healthcare plan when coverage for illegal immigrants was a hot topic issue.

“Since then, the lines between the movements have become increasingly blurred, with leaders frequently making appearances at each other’s events,” the report read.

Now, even without legislative support, militia supporters are vowing to continue.

“There is a large military veteran population in our state who would go down there and do the work that the state needs done under the state flag,” Michael Frye, a supporter of the bill, told the Star. Now, he added, “There’s really no other choice but for those folks like myself to form citizen militias.”

I dont care who the hell is protecting our border from drug cartels and mooslimps. illegal is illegal is illegal. Remove the water coolers, the free maps and shoot one across the bow. If they keep coming, shoot em. Word will get around real fast. The rapes, beheadings, kidnappings, robbery, drug running, …will stop. Are you talking about going forcibly into Mexico to fight crime? That would really cause some pain!

99.99% (never say never) of the violent crimes (by Mexicans and South Americans) are not occurring in the US side of the border. Governor Brewer could not come up with a single beheaded corpse in Arizona.

Malitia probably is not the right answer. But, people have the right to protect them self and their property. If they have to group together in order to be victorious in that effort then that is what they should do.

He hasn’t studied the Reconquista bunch either, and they’refar more numerous than this group here. And howabout the Brown Berets. Any study done there by theADL? Nope!

We have an absolute constitutional right to form citizens militias and defend our state. There are no more racists in these groups than in any other group. If the mainstream media ever decides to come down here and take a look, they would find that half of the militia members are hispanic. See… one thing they don‘t bother to tell you is that the LEGAL hispanics don’t want the cartels kidnapping or killing thier families and friends either. Go to a militia meeting in your state sometime…..if you don;t like it….try another. There is some really awesome amerians out there..all ex-military…all with major weapons…great logistics….and before they actually go in the field you train, train, train….for weeks. Think they’re not in your state? I promise…..you have at least a dozen. in every state. Where do you want to be when the shtf? and who do you want helping to protect your families? The military? Some may break from tradition and fight for what;s right, but the majority will still take orders from the commander and chief.

Illegal immigration is such a huge problem and is poisoning our society. This is what I have been saying for some time now. The Federal government is full of traitors and they refuse to enforce our laws that is why it is so important for us to take power in our local communities and when the crimmigration activists come running in and the Federal government tries to sue we tell them we won’t comply! Because we are the ones obeying and enforcing the laws and they are the criminals! What I really worry about is while illegal immigration is out of control, our corrupt government continues to make it easier period for everyone in the world to keep coming here legally which is the same as allowing a foreign invasion! This is the same thing! Whether you allow it by the law or not you are still selling out our country to foreign powers who hate this place and us as people!

OK folks, I understand how you are living lives of terror and fear, and I can see how that makes you reach out for help. I wish someone could help ease your minds. But the Feds have tried mightily to address the problem and are over-spending our precious TAX dollars to do so.

Since 911- the Department of Homeland Security has spent billions on unrealistic border protection systems and has tripled the number of fully trained Customs & Border Protection officers (it takes three years of training!). So maybe if we just armed all Arizonians over the age of 16 and had them “Walk the Border” a few weeks every two years, the bad guys would get the message.

Living on the border is a choice, much like being gay or living in New Orleans. And, if every Arizona family paid their own way in food, tents, weapons and ammo and medical supplies, we could send the bureaucrats packing and save some money for those patriotic tax payers without a border issue.

Maybe we should disband the DHS and return to the Government envisioned by our finest President, the great Ronald Reagan, who was also the owner of a southern California ranch. Now, there was a guy who went to bed without worrying every night! You would never see him whining.

When Fat Janet and Epic Holdup put up highway signs warning motorists on Interstate 8 and 10 to watch for illegals. Their agenda necessitates the criminalization of those (race and creed does not matter) who hold to the “traditional” concepts of the founding of these United States. Indeed, anyone in the world at this point on who espouses common sense, ethics and morality in governance will become a target. I even fast and pray for British politician Nigel Ferage’s wellbeing. Article 4, section 4 of the US constitution.

[...] and [the United States] shall protect each of them [the States] against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.

The US govt. must protect the States from Invasion and domestic violence (hello drug cartels).
Sounds like their job is to secure the border.

In case of a failure of the legislative and executive branches to act, the ultimate power and responsibility rests with We the People.

This is what always happens when govt fails to perform its primary duties. Citizens must take things in their own hands, its inevitable. its the real story of the KKK origination in the south after civil war. Society broke down and got real ugly, desperate people formed secret “militias” to enforce moral codes. look it up[.

Juries will follow suit and justice will be the first victim.

      Posted on May 29, 2012 at 6:06pm

The KKK was not established as a “law keeping” organization! It was bigoted and rascist from it’s inception. They tried to use the law as rationalization for their actions. It just goes to show that if one adds in just enough truth to the mix that things start to sound good and then people will believe it.

The National/Federal government has forgotten their job as drawn out in the Constitution. One of it’s roles is to protect our sovereignty internationally and part of that includes protecting our borders from those of any stripe who would infringe on the liberty and freedom we enjoy. When people seek to come to this country illegally they don’t have any rights protected by the laws that were established for our legal citizens. That doesn’t mean you can do anything you want to them, they are still God’s creations, but that is as far as it goes.

We as citizens do have a right, and I might add a responsibility, to defend our country from the onslaught that is being carried out against us.

      @Facilitiesmgr
There’s no defense of the KKK as it exists today, but I disagree with you about its original intent. There are too many family diaries and letters with example after example of the failure of the Union soldiers and martial law (yes, governmenment) failed to keep people (white and black) safe during Reconstruction. Such statements as yours is illustrative of the attempt today to alter factual history. Southerners were racist, but they were also deeply concerned for black people and very generous to them in times of need. Those stories are never told by Hollywood or media, so a warped image exists today to support the liberal left and put down anything Southern.

Not only is the gov’t refusing to secure our borders, but they are demonizing those who would take a stand by highlighting one crazy person. Look at the rest of the world’s borders. Go to Europe or Asia and try to illegally cross a border. This is not a new or radical concept! JUST SECURE THE DAMN THING!

And wanting to do so makes you an extremist? How many more of our fellow Americans will get raped or killed by an illegal infiltrator before we put an end to this ourselves??
