Citizens Sue to Stop ‘Lord’s Prayer’ Recitation at Delaware County Council Meetings

Intense debate over the presence of prayers in the public square — especially Christian ones — is nothing new. In recent weeks, we‘ve covered a teen atheist’s successful campaign to ban a prayer mural in a Rhode Island public high school. Now, there’s another battle brewing in Wilmington, Delaware, over recitation of the Lord’s Prayer at public meetings.
On Wednesday, a hearing was held in a lawsuit that aims to stop the Sussex County Council from reciting the well-known prayer before each meeting. Interestingly, much of the argument is centered around whether or not the prayer is explicitly Christian. The county’s attorney, J. Scott Shannon, argues that the prayer is generic and, thus, doesn’t favor any particular faith. The plaintiffs, of course, disagree.
The council has been reciting the Lord’s Prayer at the beginning of each Tuesday morning meeting for the past 41 years. The action, according to The News Journal, has been taken under both Democratic and Republican majorities.
But four residents are asking U.S. District Court Judge Leonard P. Stark to rule that this action violates the establishment clause of the First Amendment. Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AUSCS), a church-state separatist group, is defending the four citizens who would like to see the recitation ruled unconstitutional.
“It affiliates the county government with one single faith — Christianity — and sends a message to the county residents that their county government favors one religion,” said Alex Luchenitser, an attorney for AUSCS. ”The way this prayer is recited has many hallmarks of a religious exercise.”
The county, though, disagrees and is asking the judge to throw the case out. Attorneys for the council believe that a 1983 ruling — March v. Chambers — provides a foundation that defend‘s the use of the Lord’s Prayer. In the ruling, it was found that a government-funded chaplain in Nebraska was constitutionally able to say a prayer before legislative sessions.
“It is not required that a prayer be inoffensive to all or that it be all-inclusive,” Shannon argued, going on to claim that Jesus Christ — a Jew — had originally uttered the prayer. ”(Jesus) was not offering a Christian prayer in the Christian tradition because no Christian tradition existed,” Shannon continues.
The prayer, as you be know, can be found in Matthew 6:9-13:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’
“I’m afraid you all might have brought me a difficult case because there is no reference to Jesus or Allah” [in the Lord's prayer] Stark said.
There’s no telling what the timeframe on the case will be, as the prayer doesn’t mention, explicitly, Jesus or a specific concept of God. That being said, it did originate, as Luchenitser noted, in the Bible.

The second amendment prohibits the designation of a national religion. In other words the citizens cannot be compelled to, perhaps , belong to the presidents religion. This was the practice under the leadership of a king. Religious activity cannot be restricted. The concept of seperation of church and state as it is now understood is contrary to the second amendment. This is an example judicial activism as practiced by the Supreme Court, whih I believe should be reverces!

I went with a friend to her Catholic church, at the time I identified as Presbyterian. Out of respect, I knelt down on the board and prayed when she did. 1) the Our Father, is clearly Christian and excludes all other religions;
2) the version they are using is from teh King James Bible, and different from the Catholic version of the pray, the counsel is choosing which sect of Christianity to endorse;

It says the Federal government can’t establish a state religion. it says it can’t pass a law to block the free exercise thereof. A Government official can not take an actions that would appear to be endorsing one religion over another, in his official duties. A Counsel man at home, in private life can pray until eyes bleed, when he is acting on behalf of the people in an official capacity, he is bound by the Establishment Clause. Clerks in New York State can not deny marriage licesnes to gay couples, regardless of their religious beliefs, cause while acting in the employment they are representing the State.

After all, the 1st Amendment only states what Congress can not do. Right? This has distorted its original and sole intent for the purpose of continuing the radical and progressive change in our form of Government. It has been liberally and corruptly used and implemented to change our traditions and society’s culture. That has happened, whether you agree or disagree with the change. The fourteenth Amendment to an extent has enforced Nationalism, and opposed Federalism. Christianity is the foundation of the culture upon which Western civilization was built. A genuinely Christian populace will reject collectivism and support individualism. A genuine Christian populace will live moral lives and thus they will support governmental policy that encourages individual, personal, moral responsibility. A genuine Christian populace will reject collectivism and centralized government. A morally debauched populace will look to the government to support them and shelter them from their bad moral choices. A WHITE amle was beaten to death the other night in front of the Liberty Bell Plaza in Philadelphia. The mayor, today announced a reward for suspects as there were MANY witnesses. The problem…
You cannot find a description of the assailants anywhere. Why? because it was scrubbed. The assailants are MIDDLE EASTERN.

It’s a huge reach to suggest that keeping the local government from endorsing one religion will precipitate an elimination of the right to practice religion freely. This IS a preservation of freedom of religion, in that it keeps Christian council members from using government time and money to practice their religion. In no way does that threaten their ability to practice their religion on their own time.

Heck, them picking their noses, talking on the their phones, looking out the window, daydreaming, combing their hair, buying $300 leather seats, and talking about the weather is A BIGGER WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY, than humbly seeking God’s protection and blessings.

The word “law” doesn’t even appear in my first response, so I don’t see why you felt it necessary to suppose it did as part of my argument. Lovely straw man you’ve got there. And as to your claim it’s not the biggest waste of time for the council… Irrelevant to the fact that it IS a waste of time, and should be eliminated. If they want to hold an all-inclusive, non-denominational prayer, that would be fine according to the laws of our country. But to use an explicitly Christian prayer for a government agency is tantamount to endorsing Christianity.
I wonder how you’d feel if the council were performing Muslim prayers every day and it were a Christian council member asking that they stop.

And heck, Christian prayers used to be okay in this country for more than 300 years, before the Liberals and Marxists took over, about 60+ years ago. The Muslim religion and faith never had any great or minimal influence on the lives of the American people, nor did our founding fathers ever consider Muslim principles when establishing our Nation. It was the Protestant Christian faith which most influenced and guided colonial Americans.
Even Thomas Jefferson when authoring the Declaration of Rights for Virginia in 1776, knew that it was our Christian faith which allowed us to be free and to tolerate those of other beliefs:
Sec. 16. That religion, or the duty which we owe to our Creator, and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence; and therefore all men are equally entitled to the free exercise of religion, according to the dictates of conscience; and that it is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, love, and charity toward each other.

I will defend the values the Founders of the nation wanted America to be open to anyone of any faith or non-belief. This is not politically correct-this is respect to other individuals. As a Muslim I have strong faith in Jesus (PBUH). God would want everyone to be happy. Not just certain people.
