When a Dallas man flying his small unmanned aviation system (sUAS) equipped with a camera spotted a stream of blood flowing into the larger Trinity River in Oak Cliff, Texas, he reported it to authorities.

Blood seen flowing from Cedar Creek into the Trinity River. (Image via sUAS News)
According to the local CBS affiliate, it was traced back to a local meat packing company — the Columbia Packing Company — which was illegally dumping animal blood into Cedar Creek, the company is now under both state and federal investigation. The company has denied knowledge that this action was intentional.
sUAS News reports the account of the man who snapped the image of the plume of blood (he preferred not to be named):
I was looking at images after the flight that showed a blood red creek and was thinking, could this really be what I think it is? Can you really do that, surely not?
Whatever it is, it was flat out gross. Then comes the question of who do I report this to that can find out what it is and where it is coming from.
[...]
The Coast Guard staffed 800 number was answered immediately, and I explained to the officer what I had seen and how. I asked if I had called the correct place, and was assured that I had. The officer took my report and asked me quite a few questions. I then asked what was going to happen from here, and I was told that the appropriate authorities, including the TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environment Quality) would be notified. A local investigator was dispatched within 20 minutes and onsite within another 20.
CBS reported last week that the Texas Environmental Crimes Task Force had been investigating the plant for two months and with this photo evidence brought in the Environmental Protection Agency, the Texas Parks and Wildlife, and Health and Human Services. A search with a warrant by these organizations revealed a pipe not that was not connected to the waste water system, CBS reported:
“I think they discovered a secondary pipe again is my understanding, so the question is who installed the pipe and why was it there,” [Health and Human Services chief Zach Thompson said.]
Watch a local Fox report:
Investigation: Pig’s Blood Flowing into Trinity River: MyFoxDFW.com
In a statement on Monday, the plant said that it would not “intentionally engage in the activities recently alleged in the media”:
It was surprised by the allegations raised last week and was previously unaware of any such concerns. When notified of the potential issues, it fully cooperated with the government officials to answer any questions and to take any necessary action. Columbia ceased operation pending approval from the governmental agencies to resume its normal operation.

(Image: sUAS News)
sUAS News considers this a victory for the citizen drone pilot stating that “making a positive environmental difference.”
The Dallas plant is not the only meat packing plant being investigated at this time for its disposal of animal byproducts. The Telegraph reports that a plant in Poland is being investigated for similar issues that sent blood shooting out of man holes. Check out the Telegraph video evidence:

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 5:40pmIf it weren‘t for the USDA’s ban on blood related products such as black pudding, there would be no waste or so little that dumping it would not matter. Also, I predict a major fish die off downstream of this meat packing plant within the month. The river that was being fertilized and fed by the blood will now lack the nutrients to sustain all the fish. However, right now would be a good time to fish!
Lastly, who really cares if they dump blood into a stream? I could see getting upset over harsh or toxic chemicals, but blood? I use blood as a natural fertilizer for my plants and blood is 100% biodegradable, edible, and natural.
Sorry, really last thing. When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton, I worked on the air station and they had the Officer/SNCO bathrooms redone. Turns out that the idiot plumbers plumbed the new sewage lines into the roof drains and into the creek that runs just east of the air station. It took a month or two, then we started smelling some pretty foul crap and turds and TP could be seen floating out of the storm drain. So I say if our own federal gov‘t can’t get their 5h!t straight, then they shouldn’t hold anyone else to account for their mistakes.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 8:16pmDon’t bother worrying about blood going into our water supplies. Worry about the other EPA regulations that the Republicans would roll back: mercury, lead and other metals, pesticides, the things that cause cancer, birth defects, cause irreversible nerve damage including brain damage especially in unborn children. The right argue that companies will make more profits if they are allowed to release those carcinogens and mutagens into the environment, and they’re right, they will.
You may believe that an increased rate of cancer, brain damage and birth defects are something you’d trade off for greater company profits for investors like Mitt Romney. But I’m on the other side.
Don’t worry about the blood, it biodegrades quickly. It won’t hurt you. It’s the stuff the EPA regulates that shortens your lifespan.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 9:22pm@ JZS, I appreciate your comment on the other post about the Pope. However, I have to say that the EPA regulations do not keep anyone from dumping anything. The reality is that wastes that used to be dumped into landfills are now burned off so that we can breathe them in. I feel that if everyone had their property rights back (read allodial title to their land), then they could use the court system to punish corporations or individuals who dump waste on their property, or cause the air that they breathe to be full of chemicals, or pump byproducts of aluminum smelting into city water supplies (ever wonder where your fluoridated water comes from).
The EPA hasn’t stopped any of this harmful polluting. In fact, by forcing cars to meet strict emission standards, they have forced them to be less efficient for decades now. I could go into detail, but suffice it to say that without the EPA and the NHTSA, we would have had cars with higher compression ratios, better displacement to power ratios, better power to weight ratios, and they would be lighter and more economical as well. If you want my opinion, the EPA has screwed us for decades and the major problems that you have mentioned could have been solved more readily and cost effectively through the civil court system.

There ARE state and federal agencies charged with ‘monitoring’ and reporting on the fitness of businesses in their ISO compliance as well as EPA and just plain ethical rule compliance. But no action from them.
Inefficient government should be dismantled and disbanded. Severing all connections to those particular practices while new remedy is sought. Employees should be fired and management should be held accountable. Including prosecution, where necessary.

There is no clean water in the USA today. I distill the water that I drink. My friend works for OSHA. She told me back in the early 2000′s that there in not one water treatment plant that produces clean water. There are drugs that people have eliminated into the water supply. When you take drugs they are excreted by the kidneys. So anyone drinking anything but distilled water is getting someone’s drug regimen. Cialis, statin drugs, psychotrophics, antibiotics, estrogen, etc. Drink up.

When there are people who can’t even afford to go to the doctor because they would then not be able to pay rent, is a water filter something they can afford? What if it means less groceries that month as a result? There are neighborhoods scattered throughout the US where the tap water is laced with nasty stuff, brown, or actually even flammable. This is the USA! I’ve been to 3rd world countries and experienced similar things there, but HERE?

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 2:56pm@Jaycen Your assertion that Americans want clean air and water is correct. You wouldn’t have needed to be a scientist to know that dumping chemicals into the water and air would be a problem. But it was done, and the Cuyahoga River did catch on fire and there were thousands of super fund sites and 10,000 of examples where companies knowingly or stupidly (unknowingly) prevented us from having clean water and air because they were greedy. Your right though it should be a very simple and easy regulation. If your company uses water it must be returned cleaner than the water you started with. The effluent from your stacks should be cleaner than the surrounding air. Both of which can be accomplished by honorable companies run by good citizens. When this is not done the regulations can be replaced by civil suits brought by the local community with awards that make it better business to invest in clean air and water.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 3:21pm@progressiveslayer Your right though they can be simple and reasonable. Replace water back cleaner than the water you are using. Make the effluent coming from you stacks as clean as the ambient air. Technology exists to do both. The rest of it is just BS to draw the focus from these 2 simple ones.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 3:30pm@JROOK In a perfect world we could have reasonable regulations but our government is so corrupt that won’t happen. Most of our bureaucracies are unconstitutional and should be abolished,we both know that’ll never happen so we have to make the best of a bad situation. If a property owner is harmed by someone the courts would be the place to deal with it.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 3:35pmcan we rely on an individual to clean this mess up then? How many people’s drinking water will be tainted, not to mention the soil in surrounding areas increasing in nitrates, etc, which are not good things for the environment? we have regulations and the EPA in an attempt to discourage people from selfishly doing what they want at the cost of others in their community, and in instances where they don’t adhere, there are legal paths for consequences.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 5:16pm@Encinmon..whoever said that??? Whoever said do away with corps being responsible if they are dumping items to affect air and water??? The question and concern is at what level of government do you want to give that task too….if you enjoy having the Fed Government distributing regulations that might work for Florida, but make no sense and has no place in Montana, then crawl back to you Libby/Progressive shell and whine to yourself and other Libby/Progressive that life is unfair…The rest of us would like these thing handle at a government level that is more closer to home…less red tape, cheaper, and things actually get done instead of stonewalled….
