We’ve come to expect fireworks from NJ Gov. Chris Christie, and he usually delivers. Like at Jeb Bush’s Excellence in Action Conference, where he explained how you stand up to a bully like the New Jersey teachers union NJEA (starts at 3:22):
The “bully” analogy must be one he likes (this one from June):

Posted on December 3, 2010 at 10:34amAre you people kidding me or what. Christie for President. I hope not. Not in my day. NJ has the worse laws in the country against the legal ownership of weapons. Christie has done nothing to change that. There is a man in jail for a 7 year prison term in NJ right now, what is his crime, he bought a handgun in Colorado, moved to NJ and still had the gun locked in a case without ammo in his trunk. NJ gun laws will need to improve before I would ever consider Christie for National Office of any kind.

If you’re going to stay in N.J., you’re going to have to change too many minds over there, including your law makers. Thankfully, over here we are losing the Idiot Rendell.

Posted on December 5, 2010 at 1:39pmThere are huge problems in NJ that need to be addressed (and NJ does not have that market cornered); however, everything takes time, prioritizing, planning, and execution. The Gov has the intelligence and intestinal fortitude to use his time wisely, prioritize the largest fixes that need to be made, plan how to accomplish the tasks at hand, and plow forward undeterred. Education seems to be the gravest issue, which he gets. Unfortunately, this priority comes a little late for some if your grammar and spelling are representative of the NJ educational system (not a slam on you, but certainly on the English teachers who give passing grades because things are “passable” vs “mastered”; mediocrity vs excellence). The right to bear arms is American and constitutional, and you should be upset; making sure all generations that come after us can read and understand that document is priority one.

Posted on December 3, 2010 at 10:13amWay to go Gov…….of course, the most basic problem with the schools today, is that Progressives understand that dumbing down the next generation will make it easier for them to accept their roles as serfs to their Communist masters. Bad schools are not an accident, but a carefully planned plot.

She has said from the start that poor teachers are protected by Tenure and it should be gotten rid of. Just like in life , some lechers want to live off the hard work of others. She finds that the lousy , lazy, poor teachers are the union leaders, or the most vocal dipstcks. in the union cesspool. She has gotten together with other good teachers and exposed these nitwits to the principal and other town school administrators. Sadly we in the Socialist Republic of Connecticut have just elected Dan Malloy to the governorship so the unions will be rewarded. Go Chris Christie

Report Post »Every school system should have a superintendant with the character and concern for the kids Christie has. In alot of cases when they have the desire to do what’s right, the unions stonewall them and they finally quit or cave. I’m sure there are also cases where the unions grease the palms and get their way. In any case, it is the children who suffer and, having had three go through the public school system in FL, I can tell you that the attitude of the teachers directly reflects the attitude of the principal. We need to find more leaders like Chris Christie.

What a great american!
IF I do the math correctly…..
$18,000 per pupil works out to be $540,000 per year for a 30 student class.
If the average teacher salary plus fringes is $85,000
If the average cost per pupil for bus is $500 then 30 times is $15,000
If the per pupil maint and operating cost is $500 then 30 times is $15,000
THose all add up to $115,000 (about 20%)–where did the other $425,000 go?????
It is time the people that benefit from public schools was the KID not the ADULTS.
Give em hell Chris!!
God Bless you

Posted on December 3, 2010 at 10:36amUntameable Kate,
I also live in the great state of Arizona and am so proud to be a citizen of a state that is trying to do the right things. A right to work state still has unions, however the big difference between New Jersey and Arizona, or any other right to work state, is you do not have to join the union to work at the job. If the union does stupid things and asks for extravagant benefits other members can bail from union membership making the union weak. In those states, or closed shops, where you have to join the union to work there a person does not have a choice and the union gets their dues to do with what they want. Take the money away from the union bosses and you’d be surprised how things will change for the better.

Posted on December 3, 2010 at 10:53amI agree with “Brain”. Besides, we, as Americans, need to get out of this knee jerk syndrome of offering up the Presidency to anyone who appears….OK. Let’s step back and let the process work. Whether Palin, Paulenty, Newt or Christie, let’s just let the process work. Christie will either sink or swim and if he can swim for 4 or 8 yeas and he really wants the job of President, then he too can join in the primary process and fight for it. We’ve elected “newbie” senators and govenors before and looked what it got us – Obama and Carter……….

I live here in NJ and even though I like what Christie has to say, I have not seen all the changes I’d like to. However, he is the first person as governor to actually make a stand and things are happening, but very slow. BTW, I really wish his stance on the 2A was better… he really is an anti 2A at heart. I guess I need to give him a bit more time. This lousy state did not get like this over night and will take some time to slow the GIANT ship down to a point where we can steer it back to port and be repaired. Long “road” ahead of us… maybe i should simply move! But who in their right mind, beside a Commie, wants to buy a new home in NJ?

Posted on December 3, 2010 at 5:41pmCOMPETE OR LOSE – your math is way, way off.
First off, the average teacher in my district makes $68,000/yr. salary, benefits (pension & health care insurance) add to that number, call it another $20,000, so that teacher costs $88,000/yr.
Second, the state-mandated “in lieu” payment (for parents that send their kids to private school, to compensate them for the loss of busing they get an “in lieu” check each semester – that check is probably a reasonable metric for the cost of busing. The payment is $443/semester, or almost $900/yr.
Your maint. costs are easily half the true value – call it another $1,000/yr per student.
You completely avoided any consideration of the needs of some “special needs children” – while it is certainly the exception, I know of one child in NJ who’s public education costs their local school district $250K/yr – a quarter million dollars. Another $1,000 or $2,000 per child will probably cover the average special needs student.
School buildings don’t fall from the sky, the communities take on bonds to pay for them, and it can take 20 years to pay them off.
My school district in central NJ has 4,000 students, our annual budget is $73M, and we get less than 4% of our budget from state/federal sources – 96% comes from the local taxpayers.
Our budget is 3/4ths non-negotiable – staff salaries, benefits and debt service – 1/4th “discretionary” – including costs like busing, heat, electricity, books, maint. expenses, technology, etc.
Anyway, those are the real numbers.
