Cleveland Browns Fan Kicked Out of Game for ‘Excessive Standing’

Browns Fan Rob Stipe Kicked Out of Game for Standing Too Much

Rob Stipe, who was kicked out of a Browns game for excessive standing.

If you’ve ever been to a sporting event, you’ll might sympathize with Rob Stipe, who was kicked out of last Sunday’s Cleveland Browns game for “excessive standing.” Then again, if you’ve ever been stuck behind a fan who stands for the whole game, maybe you’ll cheer him getting the boot.

According to WEWS-TV, Stipe was warned several times that he was standing too much. In fact, excessive standing is even outlined as a punishable offense in the Browns fan code of conduct:

Excessive standing – please be aware that when you stand, you block the view of the fans behind you. We do not wish to diminish your ability to cheer and enjoy the game; however, your continued standing can interfere with others’ ability to enjoy the game from their seats.

So even though Stipe is part of a family of season ticket holders and has been going to games for 25 years, he was still no match for the the excessive standing rule. He explained what happened to WEWS:

Stipe said that during the third quarter, a group of security officers and sheriff’s deputies approached him and said that he needed to leave the stadium because he had been standing too much throughout the game. Security officials warned him to sit down earlier in the game, Stipe said.

“They came up and said, ‘sir, you’re standing too much, you have to go,’” said Stipe, also known as “Big R.”

Stipe, 35, of South Amherst, said he has argued with security officers before about the rules regarding standing. During a game last season, Stipe said he was warned by a security guard and police officers that he was standing too much, so he asked about the policies about the appropriate times to stand.

The security guard, Stipe said, explained that standing is acceptable on third and fourth downs, at big moments of the game and during timeouts because there is no action on the field to block.

In Sunday’s game against the Dolphins, Sipe said that he was warned to sit down on a third down play in the first half and then kicked out during a commercial break in the third quarter.

“I’m not here to bash the Browns, and I’m not here to bash security,” Stipe added. “I just want a rule telling me when I can stand and when I can’t stand.”

Neal Gulkis, team Vice President for Media Relations, responded that the rule is about having respect for others.

(H/T: Business Insider)

“We want our fans to be loud and cheer for our team,” he told WEWS, “but there are times where you basically have to respect others at the game as well.”

Its a growing problem. Many people attending sporting events want to be part of the show. The NBA games are the worst. Its all about dancing like a fool and getting on the big-screen. The game is barely a concern for a huge amount of the fans. I have cut back to pretty much college and high school sports because of the trend and the amateurs are the most fun anyway. You can keep pro baseball or basketball its unwatchable to me.

There is a lot to be said about no ticket cost, a comfortable chair, a warm room, a cold beer, your medical marijuana and watching it on your T.V. You get replays, you can go to the bathroom without standing in line, my food is much better at half the price, no traffic, you don’t have to worry about getting puked on by some drunk, or getting in a fight with some idiot, and if the game sucks you can turn the channel. They only thing you have to deal with is your wife yacking away in your ear about some unimportant crap you don’t really care about while you are trying to watch the game.

Imagine first the inflated price of the tickets, then gas, and $20.00 to park in their lot. Then some over priced hotdog at $3.00-$5.00, a couple $10.00 beers. But wait it gets better, you get to sit behind this guy. Best seat in the house, is my couch.

Did you notice he was carrying a Captain America shield?? (Not really Captain America, but you get the point.) During a rock concert a few years back, there was a big, wide bimbo with hair roughly the size of Connecticut in front of me and she had a HUGE poster. She stood up constantly to wave her poster at the band. My son, who had more cojones than me, finally told her to stop because we couldn’t see the stage. It’s one thing to be a fan, another to be an obnoxious jerk.
Seems to me, this guy is more like, “Look at me,“ than ”Look at the game.”

Damn…I was going to gig this guy for not knowing how to take other people into consideration and don’t be a fool about it, but if this happened in The Dog Pound, well, I have nothing to say. I am from St. Louis and have never set foot in Cleveland and I KNOW about the Dog Pound…the rule is pretty much make as much noise as possible to jack with the other team….grumpy people need to buy more expensive seats if they want to be pretentious.

that’s right. It also seemed like he was told what times were appropriate to stand and he was adhering to those guidelines. He also said that he didn’t want to disrespect security or the browns. He just wants the rules clarified…. exactly what did he do that was wrong?!

Would “Big R” truly have sat down, on his own, if a fan behind him had asked him to?
I think not. There probably would have been an x-rated verbal tirade directed at the fan behind him.
If he wouldn’t listen to security, what makes anyone believe he’d listed to some lowly fan with no authority to make him sit? Make sure you bring your video devices to get this clown in all his glory.

What an ass! Why does he think they made chairs. Perhaps they should make a section with chairs and one without. It’s ok to stand when something really really exciting happens (and then sit right back down) but you have clowns that have to stand when the player burps. You can see just as much sitting down. I stopped going to games because I got tired of having mentally challenged fools in front of me hopping up everytime a player farted.

incredible. none of this would happen at a Packers game, because the fans in Green Bay all are alike, we stand-up together and cheer together. Partly because we don’t suck… maybe there are Cleveland fans that don’t like to cheer for their team, simply because they forgot how to.

Very simple…..like the Raider Freaks that have their own area to look stupid, that’s what they need in Cleveland. It’s sad….the standers have no regard for the ones behind them. It’s just a mirror of the “it’s all about me” times that we live in. Big mouth a-holes that don’t give a crap about anyone but themselves so they can get on T.V. and get their 3 seconds of fame.

Actually, Pazz, the Browns have the largest number of fans world-wide of any NFL team, so there are plenty of people outside of Cleveland that care about them. The Dawg Pound is an area where Browns fans are expected to be louder and rowdier, so I side with this guy. The stuffed shirts in the front office need to lighten up. One of the reasons the Browns only have one playoff appearance since coming back to the NFL is the front office being out of touch with their fans. You want to recapture the dominance that the Browns of the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 80s had? Unleash the Dawg Pound!!!

Whats the point of going to a football game if you’re not up cheering? I wouldn‘t goto a game if i couldn’t stand and cheer for my team.

It’s not laid back baseball (which I more frequently attend live events) – football is an intense game where you stand and yell as a crowd. it’s called the 12th man.

If i wanted to sit an relax, i would do so at home… with a better view

    “Juvenile!”

There comes a time when boy must become a man. Unfortunately, for the fans near or around the developmentally arrested louts, found in every stadium in the country, those fans must endure the inebriates.

Just because one is attending a sporting event, does not negate one’s obligation to be considerate of others. In fact, I suggest, the opposite becomes salient, as being polite and courteous in a crowd helps assure a degree of civility or even decorum. MOST adults, by their early 20′s, have been taught or learned there are, indeed, people in the world other than themselves?

I’d like to offer a solution to this dilemma: Perhaps, for those fans who can’t seem to control their enthusiasm, maybe Stadiums could offer “STANDING ROOM ONLY” areas? By putting all the happy, intoxicated and even belligerent individuals in one location would keep the beer and blood from being spilled on the more quiescent fans?

Or, the Stadiums could install seat belts? LOL

      You’ve got that right!
“Stipe, 35, of South Amherst, said he has argued with security officers before about the rules regarding standing. During a game last season, Stipe said he was warned by a security guard and police officers that he was standing too much, so he asked about the policies about the appropriate times to stand.
The security guard, Stipe said, explained that standing is acceptable on third and fourth downs, at big moments of the game and during timeouts because there is no action on the field to block.”
      Also:
“I’m not here to bash the Browns, and I’m not here to bash security,” Stipe added. “I just want a rule telling me when I can stand and when I can’t stand”
Well maybe he should take his memory back to the previous year when they explained the rule to him and from the sounds of it, they had explained it to him once or twice before this year prior to his being kicked out. Is he so stupid that he doesn’t know what a rule is when they explain it to him, or does he just not care and chooses to ignore it then gripe about not knowing the rules after they have been explained to him two or three times at least before his being kicked out. I would say the second choice fits better. Like a couple of other posts stated, he wants his own way and as far as anyone else is concerned, he figures “screw them”.

Therein lies the rub? Were the fans behind him to urge that he be considerate of others, undoubtedly, he would become profane and challenge all comers to make him sit down! If, you felt you COULD physically make him sit down, the resulting melee would bloody as both sides would form up to do battle? LOL

Moreover, the boorish louts would probably be allowed to say and watch the game while the unfortunate, although trying to be civil, got arrested. Have you noticed how common sense has been stood on its head lately? Ouch!
