Climate Change Skeptic Rethinks Position After New Analysis?

  • The Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature (BEST) project set out to address criticism to climate change data and present findings for more discussion.
  • BEST looked at data from 15 sources totally 1.6 billion records dating back to the 1800s.
  • Draft papers of BEST, which took into account issues from climate skeptics, found that after reanalysis there was no change in data.
  • The Urban Heat Island effect — the effect that urban areas are warmer due to human activity — was specifically analyzed; BEST found it did not skew results of warming data.
  • Skeptics maintain that warming isn’t the question: the question is the cause.

In March of this year, Richard Muller, a physics professor at University of California, Berkeley, was reported in Scientific American (via New Scientist) as saying Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth wasn’t completely true and that there were flaws in global warming data. Muller started the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature (BEST) project to reanalyze climate data while addressing some of climate skeptics’ claims.

New Scientist reports the BEST project revealed that the data being analyzed did not change even after taking into account skeptics’ concerns:

Contrary to earlier studies that are often quoted by climate skeptics, the BEST researchers find that including data from weather stations in cities – which are warmer than rural areas – makes little difference to the overall trend. “Urban warming does not unduly bias estimates of recent global temperature change,” they say.

Blogger Anthony Watts of “Watts Up With That” has repeatedly claimed that temperature data is unreliable because weather stations are poorly placed – for instance, next to air-conditioning vents or other heat sources. However, BEST found no statistically significant difference in the trends seen at well-placed and poorly placed stations.

The Urban Heat Island effect, according to the American Meteorological Society, is the phenomenon that is warmer than its surrounding environment “most commonly associated areas of human disturbance such as towns and cities.” This effect has been cited by climate skeptics as a bias for global warming compared to areas that would not experience this phenomenon.

Calling the BEST project a “transparent approach based on data analysis,” Muller and colleagues seek to address criticism of climate data (basically, set out to address the issues climate skeptics have with current data) and present it back to the scientific community. Here’s the goal according to the BEST project website:

Our aim is to resolve current criticism of the former temperature analyses, and to prepare an open record that will allow rapid response to further criticism or suggestions. Our results will include not only our best estimate for the global temperature change, but estimates of the uncertainties in the record.

In response to BEST’s draft results, New Scientist reports relief from climate change supporters, continued skepticism from some skeptics and others who are unwilling to comment until the documents have been peer reviewed:

“These initial findings are very encouraging and echo our own results, and our conclusion that the impact of urban heat islands on the overall global temperature is minimal,” says Phil Jones of the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK, the climatologist at the heart of the “climategate” scandal. Jones helped to compile the HadCRU dataset.

“They get the same result that everyone else has gotten,” says Michael Mann of Penn State University in University Park. “That said, I think it’s at least useful to see that even a critic like Muller, when he takes an honest look, finds that climate science is robust.”

[...]

“I haven‘t ever suggested that temperatures haven’t risen since the 19th century. Quite the contrary,” says blogger and mathematician Steve McIntyre of ClimateAudit. Nevertheless, McIntyre questions BEST’s analyses of urban heating and weather station quality.

“They’re concentrating on the wrong question,” says David Whitehouse, science adviser to The Global Warming Policy Foundation, a London-based think tank that has former British finance minister Nigel Lawson for chairman. “Everybody agrees that the temperature has warmed. The people who disagree about temperatures are the barking mad end of the spectrum.”

Whitehouse believes the argument is between natural warming cycles versus warming caused by human activity.

Even still, BBC environmental correspondent, Richard Black, writes that he thinks BEST‘s ’openness and inclusion’ could help reshape the mold for trust in climate science:

Perhaps it can take the big three temperature programmes back into open waters along with it. And perhaps, if it is entirely open with everything from the beginning, some of the sound and fury will abate.

The Huffington Post reports that the project has involvement from Judith Curry, a professor at Georgia Institute of Technology and president of Climate Forecast Applications Network (CFAN), and 2011 physics Nobel laurate Saul Perlmutter. The Post also notes that the Koch Brothers are one organization helping to fund the project.

The draft papers are available here.

How many Ice Ages have there been over the past million years or so. Three, four, five? My guess is that between any two of them, the temperatures warmed and then cooled off once more. Do humans speed up that process? Perhaps. Perhaps a degree or less. And look at all the money that’s been made on it, whoever’s to blame. The whole damn thing is one big corruption!

I read the article several times, and it seems to me that what Mueller did was analyze the data collected by other researchers and compare his analysis with theirs, which means that if they fudged their data (i.e. East Anglia) his analysis would, indeed, agree with theirs. Garbage in, garbage out.

Also, I just LOVE the way those of us who are sceptical of Human-caused climate change are called Climate Change Deniers. Lie about your opponent’s position, refute your lie, declare victory–Karl Marx would be SO proud.

But in designating them as the enemy, we fall into the trap about which we have already warned, namely mistaking symptoms for cause. All these dangers are caused by human intervention and it is only through changing attitudes and behaviors that they can be overcome. The real enemy, then, is humanity itself.”

The took that little girl to day care & they already had a young boy. I assume they had originally lived in the country side & moved to the city or had paid the fine for the 2nd child. I can only assume that they cared very much.

The same thing almost happened to one of my kids. One of my parents was watching my kids from about 15′ away. They were sitting at a table in a concession area, when one of the kids decided to dart between parked cars adjacent to the concession area. On the other side of those parked cars was traffic. A total stranger caught them My parents couldn’t get up fast enough & cover the distance. So I can empathize with the situation.

No. Let me try to explain it to you, as this is an area of study for me.

There’s been an ongoing debate in recent years over the quality of surface station data. When people build asphalt around a surface station – surface stations provide temperature data that gets averaged into a “global temperature” – or redirect the hot air vent of their air conditioning onto a surface station, the data that comes out of it is of questionable quality.

The climatology establishment claimed they’d used statistical measures to account for these sorts of problems. Watts (a AGW skeptic), on the other hand wanted to find out with a massive surface station study, which got volunteers from all over the US to label stations “good” through “bad”.

The BEST study is basically comparing the averaged results of Watts’ “good” stations (as well as looking at rural stations to avoid the UHI effect) against the previously calculated global temperatures and found that there was little difference.

In short, this shows the methods of climatology have been reasonably accurate.

As has been aptly said, garbage in, garbage out, but it is much more than that. In the first place, the “scientists” and “geologists”, who “compose” the data at the various universities, NASA, and other “research” centers are paid by the left wing progressives, including the present and prior administrations, the United Nations, and the George Soros’s of life to come up with findings that support global warming, or now climate change, as the earth has cooled since about the year 2000, and proven to be so by more reliable real scientists not given an agenda nor money by the liberal loons. The agenda of these lovely progressive people is predominately if not exclusively control – pretty much every aspect of your life, including what temp that you keep your home to what our nation can produce limiting us to carbon credits and paying the UN for our polluting to be given to 3rd world countries, otherwise known as “transferring the wealth”. Where did we hear that before? Oh yes, Obama to Joe the Plumber.
Suffice it to say for now: The lovelies who have compiled much of the erroneous data, the paid scalawags, used false information, conspiring in many cases to do so, which was exposed at the University of East Anglia, with Phil Jones being one of the chief culprits, and the “findings” of Michael Mann of Penn State has also been shown to be unreliable do to improper data selection. Check out Lord Christopher Monckton and also Steve McIntyre quoted above.

Both Lord Monckton and Steve McIntyre have done extensive, unbiased, reliable and unfettered research. Another problem is with the scientific journals in the climate arena. If your research does not go along with the state of the art “climate change” agenda, more often than not you do not get your research published. The result: lies about climate change, and the influence of carbon, more specifically, human carbon or cow farts, upon “climate change” or the lack thereof, go unchallenged, as the real data and research is buried in many cases never to see the light of day. Lord Christopher Monckton has done exceptionally good work in this area and you can find his research on the internet – video demonstrations, the whole 9 yards.
Lastly, Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth is so full of misstatements and outright fabrications, that if it was being marketed as cheese, he would be sued for fraud as there are more holes in the product than there is edible cheese. Dear Al bites the dust again. It is kind of like the internet he invented, a bald faced lie. Better luck next time Al, just take your machinations and foibles to another planet, or the moon. Maybe it’s made of cheese.

Just this year an Airport in Florida had to completely redo their landing strips identification locations by degree’s measured in several feet because of the “naturally occurring” tilt of the earth over long periods. Who’d a thunk it, the earth rotates and area’s on the globe experience miniscule changes in temperature. Unfortunately for globalwarming/climatechange dolts, this is a process that generally happens in 60 years periods.

Scientists have researched known data over and over prior to this latest lunatic craze and are satisfied that there’s nothing unusual happening. Record snow falls in the US, with colder temps this loon crazed decade. Loehle in 2004 assessed 1000 year pattern that fell in perfectly with Russian Climatologists track that fell in perfectly with the 60 year climate cycle, found globally. The Chinese did as well. Loehle shows that temps in the US will average .7 – 1 degree cooler over the next 20 – 40 years, naturally increase until the end of the century, and then go thru a 300 year cooling period.

The title is wrong. Professor Mueller was never a climate change skeptic; however, among the anthropogenic global warming (AGW) believers, he’s very reasonable and honest. He criticized the pro-AGW scientific community when they shut out a pro-skeptic analysis showing that Professor Mann’s hockey stick graph was bogus, saying that it was unscientific and hurt the cause by not being honest and addressing proof that Mann’s data was flawed (I like to call it “Mann”-made global warming).

      http://www.technologyreview.com/energy/13830/

After Nature rejected publication, the skeptic professors published their data and results on the Internet before finding another journal for publication.

      http://www.multi-science.co.uk/mcintyre-mckitrick.pdf

The earth goes through warming and cooling cycles based on the solar cycle, and we are currently in a cooling trend according to current data. Hence, the natural process denier progs changed from “global warming” to “global climate change.” They drastically cut down the number of measurement stations to a small percentage and intentionally chose ones in cities next to heat exhausts. Forgive me for being skeptical, but I don’t trust them when they say they added in less biased stations without much difference when they were so dishonest in cherry-picking data to from the beginning.

The CO2 ppm prior to the industrial revolution was about 234 now the ppm is around 392 – a 67% increase! A significant increase. Where is the corresponding temperature increase? And don’t give me a threshold explanation. the data doesn’t reflect that. Methane has a 20 times greater greenhouse capacity and its levels have tripled in the same time – but you can’t make money capping and trading a naturally occurring gas that is measured in the parts per Billion! The bottom line is this: You want to cause a mass extinction? Cut the CO2 level in half – we’re all be dead – its plant food genius.

Sorry Berkely – your credibility is ZERO with the public. The truth is revealed by the fact that we had tons of snow last winter – global warmers predicted a warming climate would do away with snowy winters by 2010. Wrong!

Here is the real story – the weather CHANGES ALL THE TIME AND SO DOES THE GLOBAL CLIMATE AND THERE IS NOT ONE GOD DARN THING THAT HUMANS CAN DO ABOUT IT.

Move on progressive globalist scientists and do something useful with your time and OUR money!

It’s strange how only the current crop of humans seems to think that things should stay exactly the same. Change is the norm. The earth has been changing constantly since it was formed. The only thing new is that people have found a way to fit it into their agenda and use the change as a political weapon to achieve their goals.

Indeed, natural climate change happens no matter what humanity does.

The fact of the Global Warming garbage is that the very UN scientists who claim it exists have been caught with their own emails admitting to fabricating and distorting the data to fit the conclusions of their paymasters agendas.

The earth is subject to, especially electromagnetic influences, to a natural EEG reading. There‘s absolutely nothing varying in the known measurable’s through ice core, deep sea, cave and every other pertinent place to retrieve data globally that should get any persons attention.

The only people making asinine proclamations are deeply rooted in the Green movement. Hmmmm, wonder how the taxpayer GREEN car manufacturer in Finland, by way of Al Gore and Obama stealing our money is doing?

To add to that. There is a further test by the Russians on top of the 1000 year American model, and the 2000 year of the Chinese, that’s based on a 4000 year model. They match up almost perfectly on the 60 year natural cycle. There was also a 2000 year British model that expressed the exact same periodic findings.

I agree. When the global warming “wizard” Joel Rogers admits its a hoax on TAPE and its suppressed by the media, the sheeple become uninformed. People will believe and repeat it as fact. We all know its an agenda driven hoax to redistribute wealth. They have admitted it.

      Our futures and then some.

“We are grateful to The Washington Post, The New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost forty years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subject to the bright lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is now much more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national auto-determination practiced in past centuries.”
■David Rockefeller, in an address to a meeting of The Trilateral Commission, in June, 1991.

“Some even believe we (the Rockefeller family) are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as ‘internationalists’ and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure ‘one world’, if you will. If that’s the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it.”

Yes, they use anecdotal and local phenomina, like ‘heat islands’ to validate an extrapolated model that doesn’t work! If you took 400-degree hot oil and put it in a pot of boiling water, it soon would be 212-degrees (at sea level)! A heat island in a city doesn’t ruin the countryside! And, there are MANY things we can do to mitigae the ‘heat island’ effect, like pavers instead of solid asphalt for our driveways, streets that are not oversized in our neighborhoods and which align with the Sun in such a way as to minimize solar heating! And on and on and on! We need to stop complaining that our microclimates extrapolate to our Global climate! They have no more impact that the hot oil in boiling water example! Global climate is a different issue and must be accommodated, not manipulated!

well, normal thinking people know the earth goes through hot and cool periods. we were all under ice along time ago, then it melted and it is still melting. the glaciers in the north and such. way back then there weren‘t suv’s or factories and it still melted. they went from calling it global warming to climate change cause people weren’t buying it anymore. al gore should be brought up on charges or something. using his influence to brainwash stupid people, he should be more thoughtful with his [semi] power. just my 2 cents!

I agree 100%. The Earth warming or not is a measurable fact. Stating that humans are causing it, is an unscientific opinion. There is no possible way to test that opinion. In order for something to be scientific it needs to be observable, testable and repeatable. Global climate change is none of those things.
