Cancun Climate Summit Speaker Blames Obesity on Fossil Fuels

A U.K. professor and scientist has offered some breaking news at the Cancun climate change summit: the world is fat because of fossil fuels. According to him, if we cut down on fossil fuels we will also cut obesity.
The London Telegraph reports:
The world needs to go on a “fossil fuel diet” to stop both climate change and obesity, according to health experts.
Professor Ian Roberts of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said there is a direct correlation between … carbon emissions and expanding waistlines.
He said as soon as countries begin using cars and other energy intensive machines, it not only causes an increase in greenhouse gases but also in the population’s average weight, because people exercise less.
He said that the health problem was another reason to tackle carbon emissions.
“There is an almost linear relationship between carbon consumption and average BMI,” he said.
“The world is getting hotter and the world is getting fatter. Fundamentally fossil fuel energy is the cause of both.
“The world needs to go on a fossil fuel-controlled diet even if climate change is a hoax – which I do not think it is – the world would still have to go on a fossil fuel controlled diet otherwise our healthy systems will just break down, we will not be able to deal with the growth in obesity.
“The decarbonisation of the transport and greener lifestyles are going to be good for health as well as being good for the planet.”

Posted on December 6, 2010 at 12:34pmAll I can say is what will these idiots come up with next? It just goes to prove my point that one thing that they do not teach in college is common sense.
Look, I am a 41 year old male, I may not eat some of the healthiest foods, I drink on occasion, however I do work out on a regular basis and I am a lean and toned 175lbs. My point is that for many to exercise or not is a choice one makes. While non exercise, or diet for some may lead to an expanding waist line no real direct correlation can be made between the use of fossil fuels and increased BMI, the attempt at correlation alone is one huge stretch and to be quite honest here, well it is bunk.
Again I am all for clean air, water, and all that but the most claims being made to try and prop up AGW, Climate Change or whatever they are calling it now are a load of horse!#%^.
What you do not hear is that we are nearing the end of an 11year solar cycle in which the energy output of the sun is reaching its maximum for one, what I am waiting to see is what the effect will be when the next cycle starts. I understand the whole heat island effect of large urban areas, have since I was about 10yo, things like that but to claim this and that to prop up global warming while denying the main contributing factors is what makes the science more bunk than science.
It like the lighting of a candle in a 10‘by10’ room, you ought to try this sometime, and calculating how long it takes for that one candle to raise the temperature in the room by 1 degree. Its a boring but also interesting experiment. The point of the experiment being about simple science and physics as opposed to postulation.
I love it though when some claim that because of what I believe I am a denier, especially when those that make such a claim do not even know me, or they think that because I do not have a PHD that I could not possibly know or understand science although I made straight A’s all throughout school and the funny thing is that even today at 41 years of age I still find myself experimenting with this or that. lol

The reason you don‘t hear it is because it isn’t true. The claim that solar cycle length proves the sun is driving global warming is based on a single study published in 1991. Subsequent research, including a paper by a co-author of the original 1991 paper, finds the opposite conclusion. Solar cycle length as a proxy for solar activity tells us the sun has had very little contribution to global warming since 1975.

Sorry to disagree with you but you are wrong as this is but one of many factors driving the warming trends, to whatever degree. To omit it or say that it is not is ignorant. Like it or not it is one of the may driving factors. As well if you take the logic that what you stated is based upon one could postulate based on such logic that if the sun were to burn out tomorrow the earth would not freeze.

Posted on December 6, 2010 at 6:19pmOne other thing I want you to consider based upon the logic of the argument you posted.
Look at Mars. The atmosphere of Mars is comprised primarily of Co2 and other gases. Temperatures on the surface are extremely cold. Now based upon the premise that the AGW crowd make about Co2 being the main contributing factor to global warming and based upon the logic given in the argument you posted then temperatures on the Martian surface should be much warmer than they actually are even with the absence of human intervention.
As well if there is no direct correlation that the sun itself has had little effect on warming then temperatures on either planet would be exponentially colder than they are currently.
That said though you missed the main point of my entire post and that is to say the one thing that is truly missing in the whole Global Warming argument is the pure science. I say that because now science is more monetarily and politically driven thus nullifying its credibility since the scientists that are greedy are more apt to cook the science in compliance with whatever the funding mandates. However “Real” scientists do it strictly for the science and discovery aspect and their love of both.

Posted on December 6, 2010 at 12:14pmThe only way I could think to tie fossil-fuels to obesity, was corn. Did food companies always use corn syrup in place of real sugar? There weren’t nearly as many fat people when I was growing up (60′s-70′s) as there are now. Maybe we were more active, outdoors, or maybe it was the food. I ate all kinds of sugary sweets when I was growing up and didn’t gain any weight. I used to walk 10 miles to get to the store. I lived in the country. Sometimes, people would pick my brothers and I up and give us a ride.
Report Post »Nowadays, people are considered handicapped, because they can’t quit eating. Fat people take all the handicap spaces and all the handicap scooters in stores, because they are too fat to walk.
Why is it always the skinniest people you see jogging? I have never seen a fat person out jogging.
I know, I am just rambling, but this is one of my pet peeves. Did Oprah make it “chic” to be fat?

Humans live in many areas of the globe and have adapted their ways to each. I don’t know if you can specify an “ideal climate” for human life. What is important is that we have set up our societies for the current climate, our farming, coastal residences, cites were all built under the climate we have had for the last few hundred years. With rapid climate change we humans have to mitigate and animals will have to adapt. Unfortunately, adaptation takes a long time and the change in climate will occur much faster.

I believe it is our cars that contribute to our weight problem. However, US cities are not designed like Euroopean cities. Remember that the majority of European cities were built centuries before automobiles existed. The US would have to structure it’s cities like the Old World cities in order to adopt their transportation methods and thereby reduce American obesity.

Posted on December 6, 2010 at 12:20pmJust look at city skylines. In Europe, the skyscrapers are in a ring around the ‘old world’ city centers. In the US, skyscrapers are tallest in the center. Our cities were not built for foot traffic. Americans want to live in the sub-urbs and have a lawn for their children to play on. Freedom means just that, we are free to be obese if we choose. If the government were not involved in healthcare, they wouldn’t give a damn about our obesity. I suggest the real answer is for the government to get out of healthcare and get back to their intended purpose: Preserving our Freedom! Let us live and die the way that we choose to, the way that we used to have the right to.

If you follow the time line, I would suggest that the 1960′s civil rights movement lead to desegregation lead to busing that lead to white flight that lead to us being fat and caused the Americans to exercise less and caused the Earth to warm. Simply the civil rights movement caused global warming according to this guy. Of course this theory is easily debunked by getting on a bus in any major city and seeing how fat the people riding it are. …..No I could also correlate the rise of Feminism and its link to crime, unemployment, and the destruction of the family unit. (but that would be really controversial lol)
