LONDON (AP) — A climber who survived a plunge of 1,000 feet (300 meters) from one of Britain’s highest mountains still plans to scale Everest this year.
Adam Potter, 36, of Glasgow, slipped on an icy patch off the summit of the 3,589 foot (1,093 meters) Sgurr Choinnich Mor in Scotland on Saturday.
Potter tumbled down the steep slopes — flying off cliffs — but somehow managed to land. Rescuers were astonished to find him standing up reading a map when they arrived.
David Gibson of Scotland’s mountaineering council says his survival was “purely a matter of luck.”
Potter was discharged from a Glasgow hospital Monday afternoon — and promised he is still determined to climb Everest later this year.

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 8:39pmIt‘s pretty bad when you can’t even climb a little hill of 3589 feet without falling one third of the way back down, Everest will NOT be so kind…

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 7:26pmSo glad you survived. Were you wearing crampons?
Love to hike/climb mountains but prefer drier conditions myself. There is nothing like the feeling of reaching the summit after so much hard work & being rewarded w/ the most beautiful views(truly majestic). Love the peaks only attainable by foot. The great feeling of being one w/ nature.
To negative posters why such animosity towards climbers? You could fall down in your bathtub, or on your stairs, slip on patch of ice, or wet floor & meet your maker. You could get in a car accident, fall while riding a bike, Etc., etc. When it’s your time to go your gone. Leave the poor guy alone!

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 3:19pmThe highest mountains in England are green all the way to the top. Did he just roll down the grassy slope to the bottom? I am glad he is ok though. He should probably practice climbing “The Alps” or a few more difficult ones before he tackles Everest. I think the highest Mountain in England is 3200 feet called “Scafell Peak.”

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 11:52am@Grandmaof5 and Untamable Kate
I am not Scottish yet have an incredibly hard head as well; at least it seems so from the number of times I keep slamming it into things around my apartment complex.
Good morning Grandmaof5, hope the cats and your family are warm, heard a big cold front is south bound again for one more mess, rained here briefly this morning and is quite nice out (a bit crisp though); Kate sorry to hear about your husband tripping over the dog, wish him the best and a fast recovery.
