Chrysler‘s Detroit ’Comeback’ Ad Featuring Clint Eastwood Filmed in L.A. and New Orleans Not…Detroit

Few ads truly stood out during last Sunday’s Super Bowl, but there is at least one that has set itself apart, and for more reasons than one. Chrysler’s ad featuring Clint Eastwood titled “Halftime in America,” focused on a “Detroit Comeback.” The only discrepancy is that the spot was filmed in both Los Angeles and New Orleans — not Motor City.
The ad, meant to encourage and inspire, centers on the resilience of Detroit.
“It’s halftime. Both teams are in their locker room discussing what they can do to win this game in the second half,” Eastwood narrates. “It’s halftime in America, too. People are out of work and they’re hurting. And they’re all wondering what they’re going to do to make a comeback. And we’re all scared, because this isn’t a game. The people of Detroit know a little something about this. They almost lost everything. But we all pulled together, now Motor City is fighting again.”
That’s where things get sticky.
From The Weekly Standard:
But contrary to what the might ad suggest, the spot was actually filmed in New Orleans and Los Angeles. “Yes, part of it was filmed in New Orleans . . . and some was filmed in various parts—such as Los Angeles,” Dianna Gutierrez said. She specifically points to the tunnel scenes as being taken at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, while the stadium shots were in New Orleans.
Asked whether any part of the ad was filmed in Detroit, Gutierrez said that previously taken footage from various parts of the Motor City was used. No image of Detroit was shot for the specific use in this ad.
Below is the ad, for reference:

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 7:52pmI don’t see why this is constued as pro-Obmaa. Eastwood is NOT for Obama and the ad was about the resilience of Americans. Because it’s for Chrysler, the water is a bit muddy, but the message was a good one.
Report Post »Why does anyone care where it was filmed? Most shows, movies, commercials that depict a place are not actually filmed in that place. Who cares?

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 7:57pmWho cares where they shot it? Do you think that they actually shot “Red Planet” on Mars, or “Journey to the Center of the Earth” at the center of the earth? Who in their right mind would want to be caught with a lot of expensive equipment on the streets of Detroit anyway? Death wish.

Man, that was my exact thought, bet the apocolypse ad was filmed in Detroit. They couldn‘t film a positive one because I’ve seen pictures. I just got an email of what Hiroshima looks like now, and what Detroit looks like. I hear they’re selling houses there for $1,000.

Posted on February 7, 2012 at 11:07amThe advertising firm that put it together have done work for Obama. I believe Eastwood when he says he put no political stock in his appearance but I don’t believe Chrysler or anyone else involved with it. If you watch the ad, you can see shots of “protesters” but the slogans have been blurred to keep it “non-political”. The truth is that GM and Chrysler would have limped along had they been allowed to go into a structured bankruptcy with a new owner, but then the unions would have lost their contracts wouldn’t they? It’s half time in America…do we keep bailing out failures so that they can fail again later?

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 7:02pmIf they shot in Detroit, the money spent to do the filming would have been kept there which would have been a good thing. I want filming to be done there to show what America and the autos have neglected.
There is a lot of confusion about bailing out the autos. In order to just get taxpayer money back, GM would need to trade around 52/share. It trades under the IPO after the bailout. That is not good. Equally in order to survive unions took about a 30 percent haircut which from my standpoint is running backwards. CAT is closing a plant in Canada because senior union members made about 35/hr. This plant was previously owned by GM and so now you know who ran up the tab and made that plant unable to compete. The manufacturing will be sent to Indiana and the pay about half that.
When we all signed up from this global economy it means those making the higher dollars will be forced to take lower wages in order for the bottom to start catching up with the top. At some point the two ends will meet to form a balance. The bottom is benefiting from this wage disparity, while the mature nations like the US are hurting. We all saw this coming because it didn’t happen over night.

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 8:13pmThere is no entropy in an economical system, capitalistic or socialistic. To make an economic system tailored to your specifications you need to do an analysis of the existing system, the factors identified, and then engineered from there. After the fall of the Soviet Union the greatest minds in the world tried to bring it to a capitalistic system…and failed. Their original assumption were incorrect, and only now are trying to figure out where the mistakes were. Those trying to bring the USA to a socialistic utopia without individual rights are clueless as to the final results. It’s just a crap-shoot.

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 6:51pmHere we go. Are you all ready for the Supershow? this is just a little test of what is coming our way. Everybody will be saying how good the obama administration is doing. Give him a second chance, because he said he “Deserves” a second chance. I wonder how many CEO would retain their jobs, if they were doing such a bad job as Obama has done. Anyway, that is a different story. My point is that what chance do we have if all the losers are behind this administration with lots of money and the megaphone to tell people how to think.
