‘It’s Halftime in America’: Clint Eastwood Narrates Powerful Super Bowl Commercial for Chrysler

Clint Eastwood Chrysler Super Bowl Ad |

Chrysler made news with a moving Detroit-centric Super Bowl advertisement last year, and it looks like they’ve done it again. Titled “It’s Halftime in America,” the advertisement aired during halftime of Super Bowl XLVI and features Clint Eastwood narrating a powerful presentation intertwining commentary on the idea of halftime in the game, American economy, Detroit and automobile industry, followed by a positive message moving forward. Despite producing the video and paying for it’s high Super Bowl air time cost, the word “Chrysler” is not heard in the advertisement.

(Related: Why did the NFL have the Chrysler ad yanked from YouTube?)

“This country can’t be knocked out with one punch. We get right back up again, and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines. Ya, it’s halftime in America, and our second half is about to begin,” Eastwood says as he drifts off camera and the Chyrsler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram logos appear.

The Detroit Free Press reports that dealers were given a sneak peak of the advertisement earlier in the day:

“The key message is that there is still another half to go as both Chrysler and the nation continue to recover from the 2008-2009 recession that drove Chrysler and General Motors into taxpayer-funded bailouts.

‘It’s a whole different kind of theme from last year,’ said Darvish, who was among dealers who got a sneak peak of the two-minute commercial during the National Automobile Dealers Association convention today in Las Vegas. ‘It’s all about the greatness of the country.’”

CBS News notes that Chrysler was bailed out with $12.5 billion from the U.S. government in 2008, and following bankruptcy restructuring is majority owned by Fiat SpA. In 2011, Chrysler earned $183 million, compared with a loss of $652 million in 2010.

Eastwood produced, directed and starred in the 2008 film”Gran Torino,” a drama telling the story of a gruff retired factory worker in a demographically changing Detroit neighborhood.

Watch the advertisement which to some may closer resemble a political campaign video rather than car commercial:

The commercial was excellent, it was moving and had similar emotion to it as Reagan’s “Its morning again in America”.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU-IBF8nwSY

However, it was ruined because it was for a car company, one that was bailed out on the backs of the American taxpayer. This commercial flashed an analogy in my head, people will like the commercial because it “made them feel good” versus the reality of its substance. People look at the Republican candidates the same way, they want someone that looks presidential regardless of their record, forgoing their message, voting record or substance.

This commercial sponsored quasi-communism, by saying we stuck together and used public funds to save an auto company. Disgusting.

To the rest of us non-Kool-Aide drinkers, this was a fabulously well-done ad, and because Eastwood is famously very conservative, it was possible to hear what he was really saying: In spite of everything this Marxist Progressive government has done to us over the last century, America is awake now, and come November, the direction is about to change!

      Pointless. Unite on what?
      What are they saying?
Join the collective? Hand our country over to incremental oppressors? Socialism? to The people who subvert our Bill of Rights and Constitution? Submit to the people who can’t find enough ways to regulate every aspect and right attached to our lives?

Unite and defend our rights and Constitution as patriots? Are they trying to be patriotic?
If I have to ask, then they’re making a very weak attempt.

Are they asking for another bailout?

No GM cars for me! No more bail outs. No unity with progressive, marxist, socialist, communist aganda advancement.

The Democrats are holding us at halftime. They are leveling the playing field, sending gulf and keystone and Alaska and offshore oil rig jobs (good paying jobs) to other countries. They are holding our fuel prices high. They are blocking new refineries. They are interfering with fuel prices and the ability to buy fuel. Where does the economy go from there? How does it grow?

They advance socialized medicine with a massive 2700 page pile of oppressive dominance over individual rights.

They are taking us to THEIR goal line. We have to take the nation back home. I’ve seen enough. Get your wallets & walking shoes ready to help get patriot representatives into the seats where oppressors currently sit.
      Obamacare must go.

Anything which gains opportunity on the backs of others by the force of government is, in some measure, tyranny and with it the correlating diminishing of liberty. Thereby subtracting from all of us economically and civilly.

Rep. Clarke asks Obama to bail out city of Detroit
After listening to President Obama give a bullish analysis of the nation’s once-bankrupt auto industry in a speech at the University of Michigan, Clarke met with the president aboard Air Force One to argue that Detroit might soon need the same sort of federal assistance.

“I went on Air Force One with one purpose: to talk to the president about emergency aid for Detroit,” Clarke told MLive.com. “[M]y request is based on the fact that we want to avoid the city running out of cash in the next two months, but we also want to stabilize the situation in a way that will create jobs by making streets safer, better educating and training people for jobs.”…

@ Hypnos Most people believe that Ford Motor Company was supposed to be the only major U.S. automaker not in need of a bailout or that Ford never got any government loans unlike GM and Chrysler. That is incorrect. Ford was the first US auto company to go to the Government for a bailout a year before GM and Chrysler so they missed all the bad press. On 6/29/2009 Ford accepted a $5.9 billion loan subsidy under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), their second Government Loan. Back in 2006 before the credit markets collapsed, Ford essentially mortgaged every facility it had in order to borrow $23.5 billion. Ford was not as solid as everyone thinks, they too have had the government help them out, just they missed all the media hype since they had gone first to the Government “Well.” They were already on the recovery path when GM and Chrysler got their hand out. One of the Reason Chrysler needed help: At the time Chrysler was way in the black but they were set back by the departure of Daimler when Daimler left they charged Dodge a $650,000,000 management fee and that crippled Chrysler’s future R&D funds. So they not activly survive the market turn down. GM was poorly managed and had too many brands that were not contributing to the bottom line and were more of an anchor than anything, Hummer, Buick, etc..

Thank you for reminding people that Ford is not innocent of taking govt. money. Don’t forget, though, that Ford was at the table at the same time as GM and Chrysler begging for whatever they could get. It wasn’t until they saw the strings attached to the cash that they said “no thanks”. Also, what helped them to secure the loans they needed was a huge cash reserve that they had from selling off most of their foreign brands. They were in such bad shape a few years before the collapse, they had to start selling. Because they did it before the bottom fell out, they got very lucky and had lots of money.
You’re also right that GM had been poorly managed, but they were working their way out of their bad place. They had been putting great people in place, making better and better cars, their sales were up and the future was looking bright. Some of their brands weren’t pulling their weight, but the two you mention were. They kept Buick because it’s the most poplular foreign brand in China and was poised to make the amazing recovery it is now making in America. Hummer was a cash cow prior to the collapse, but that was the market hardest hit by the downturn. As to the others; Saab had always been a problem for GM. Saturn and Pontiac also were showing real promise. Both had great vehicles at the time (Aura, G8!), and even better ones in the works, and they both had very loyal owner bases. It’s terrible they were forced by the govt. to close such a storied brand as Pontiac.

This was a tremendously well done, moving commercial. I found myself actually tearing up a bit. Eastwood is a stunningly talented man.
It is ever so ironic, though, that such a gripping, pro-America ad is put out by a company that was given, by our government, to an Italian company, as well as the Canadian government and the unions. The bailouts, the left will tell you ad nauseum, saved the auto industry. BUNK. The bailouts were for the sole purpose of forcing the two unfortunate companies to be railroaded by the government into giving unprecedented money and power to the unions. Had the bailouts not been given what would have happened? Legal bankruptcy proceedings and restructuring. With the bailouts what happened? ILLEGAL bankruptcy proceedings where bondholders were told to stuff it, while the unions collected all the cash and interest in the companies they could. The government took control of the businesses and forced countless independant, successful (non union) dealers out of business, screwed the bondholders who, by law, were to be the first to collect, fired personnel who dared object, and handed control to foreign governments, foreign businesses and the unions.

Do you know what is really sad? A man of his years lacking wisdom to see that building cars cannot be the glue that binds Americans together……building anything for that matter. The common thread that joined us together were…I say “were” because its gone now, were the Judea-Christian values of morality. Our communities fail for lack of morality! Drugs, crime, greed, hopelessness, lack of vision have long crept in. Oh sure some kid comes up with a great idea called Facebook….so what! We’ve gotta have someone coming up with a multitude of brilliant ideas everyday to be on par with what we once were and did as a country. Face it, the American spirit of real competition has since been replaced with everyone wins.

Its also the agenda of some to take country down and destroy it and I would agree that thats happening.

Encinom, you just can’t pass up any opportunity to spew your hatred of Christianity, can you? Chief didn’t speak of any ancient myth. He spoke to the very real values that our founder funamentally based our nation upon. Call them American values instead of Judeo Christian, if you wish, the principle remains the same. Our founders studied, and borrowed from, several philosophies, including the fundamentals of Judeo Christian teachings. They didn’t create a theocracy, but instead used the basics of a very solid philosophy to give us a nation of freedom and liberty.
Jobs alone will not set our ship right. The morals and values that founded our country and saw it become the almost instant standard of the world have been largely discarded, and the result is what you see today. Govt has replaced the family unit by a very meticulous design. We have created a culture of entitlements that rewards bad behavior. If our people return to the basic values that made this country so amazing, we will have all the jobs we can handle. If we merely keep trying to make jobs appear from thin air, our country will cease to be.

Clint Eastwood is doing Obama Campaign Commercials now, huh?

Chrysler is in bed with Obama, but who is going to buy cars because of an Obama Campaign Commercial? We are with the federal government we are here to help and we don’t need to make no stinking profit. Classic, now the super bowl ads are just Obama commercials, that’s a good way to bring down the super bowl ratings.

At first I thought Clint was going to say, “Chevy” and “Volt” and that he was bought and paid for by Obama and crew. I’m glad it was “anything else but Obama and GM”. I guess Clint will not be voting for Obama and the IRS will be “paying” him a visit for being a traitor to GM.

Chrysler was just as bailed out as GM. In fact, Since parts of Chrysler were given to Canada and the unions, and the majority going to an Italian company, I would say Chrysler was the worse of the two bailed out automakers.
I wish people would stop equating the Volt with Obama and the bailouts, as if it was a government-mandated car. Now, the new Dodge Dart IS govt-mandated. Fiat earned an additional 5% stake in Chrysler by bringing a 40MPG Dodge (it’s really an Alfa Romeo) to the states. The Volt was in the works long before the country even knew about Obama. GM needed a eco halo car like Toyota’s Prius. I’m no greenie (give me a Camero with 500+ HP, please), but for a large swath of the population, and for the image, GM needed their own Prius. The Prius is a sales success for Toyota, and a huge boon to their image. The Volt is a remarkable technological acheivement. The fires we’ve heard about are still under investigation, and from what I’ve read, NHTSA may be to blame for not handling the crash-tested car properly. I’m reserving judgement, but I‘ve no doubt they’ll be able to remedy the problem, if there is one. The high cost that has so many people poo-pooing the car will eventually come down as the technology is perfected and spread out over more vehicles, like the stunning new Caddy that will use the next gen Volt tech.
Now, if you want to complain about the subsidies the Volt, and cars like it, receive, I’m right there with you, but that‘s not GM’s fault

Messenger, I‘m sorry you’ve had so many troubles with American cars. I’ve had very few. My prized vehicle is an Oldsmobile Cutlass from the late ’80s, and it is a fantastic car from that period. My family has primarily had GM vehicles for decades and have had very little problems. Between us, we currently have GM vehicles from just about every era, and I’ll put any one of them against a similar import. We’ve also owned Hondas, Toyotas, Kias, Chryslers, Mercedes and several others. In all, we’ve always had the best luck with GM. My last new vehicle was an ‘05 Chevy Silverado. What an amazing truck. Comfortable, powerful, easy to drive, absolutely trouble free, and believe it or not, was worth more when I traded it in at 2 years old, than what I paid for it (I got deep discounts).
I guess my whole point is, if you are excluding American vehicles from past disappointments, you are truly missing out. The current crop of American vehicles are better than ever, and are worth anyone’s attention. While I’ll not buy another new GM until the govt. is out of their business, I can’t wait for that to happen. The Camaro ZL1 is just begging me to buy it.

I have owned 57 vehicles in my life and the Toyotas were horrible. Toyota truck rusted out prematurely, My Camry; the rear door stoped opening due to a frame tweak after being only 2 years old, and second Camry the dash stoped working, computer problems, gutless, and front light assembly fell off. I race trucks as a hobby and five of my tow rigs were / are Dodges. I put 250K miles on each one before selling, and my totaly cost for maintenance (out side of Oil changes) on all five was less than $1670 ( one crank sensor, ball joints, a few bearings, clutches) For 5 vehicles from 1988 to present. Not many brands have worked so well for me. My 68 Charger runs perfect, as does my 73 Challenger, my 92 Ramcharger, my 01 Durango, my 4 Jeeps ( all over 188K) running perfect, my 07 Charger perfect, and my Dodge T-Rex 6×6 148K no problems, my 2005 GMC running good with minimal troubles and my Fords were very reliable, they reliably left me on the side of the road every trip we took.lol…. So I don’t agree that Japanese cars are any better. I have studied the Lean Six Sigma aproach of Toyota, and the US big three utilize the same quality approach.

I found it hard to believe that Conservative Eastwood would have anything to do with an ad that seemed to say it was OK for the bailouts to “save” Detroit from it’s own stupidity. A powerful message indeed, but, IMO, the wrong message. America does NOT Need the kind of government centered “help” to reclaim her place in the world. As Mr Reagan said, “Government isn’t the solution to the problem, government IS the problem.”

I posted this up on savingtherepublic.com not too long ago and some ppl just make you regret doing things sometimes. Some of the negativity I saw on it just makes you think whats wrong with people even after you put a note to it “Substitute Detroit for “We the People”, America or Americans; what a great ad!! Heck, sounds more like a political speech from a true leader than an ad from a bailed out company!!… Clint 2012“ Some took my ”Clint 2012″ literally others took opportunity to bash.

This country is really going down the tubes b/c when a “patriotic” commercial comes on you want to spread and ppl decide to go negative’ what are you left with? This is something to remind people we have been down and we will come back. It WILL BE hard but we can do it!

This commercial and Eastwood’s commentary WAS GREAT. We came make a come back, so to those who want to bash just go away. Leave, because you are the problem, YOU and your kind are in the way. Some of you are too critical and so negative you are bringing everyone down!
