Fight Breaks Out at Funeral for Home Invader | Moses Taylor

PHOENIX (AP) — A fight broke out during a funeral at a Phoenix church after a friend of the departed punched a man who had reportedly been fighting with the deceased before he died.

Phoenix police say the fight broke out Friday afternoon when the unidentified friend recognized the other man and punched him “in honor of the fallen.”

The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/A5JRMm) reports many of the other people attending began fighting, but there were no injuries, no shots fired and no arrests when officers broke up the scuffle.

Phoenix TV station KSAZ says the fight involved up to 30 people

Neither the person who instigated the fight nor the man he punched was identified.

KSAZ says the funeral was for a 20-year-old man killed last month after allegedly breaking into an apartment.

 

KSAZ-TV:

“I don’t know..everybody was just running and fighting and it was just crazy,” said a mourner.

People came to pay their respects to 20-year-old Moses Taylor, who was killed in January after allegedly breaking into an apartment near Interstate 17 and Glendale Avenue.  He was struck in the face with a clothes iron by the man who lived there.

At the funeral, a fight broke out involving 20 to 30 people.

“I’m not even sure how many people were fighting. I just know the fight just broke out and I just had to make my way out of the church house,” said another mourner.

Another person at the funeral stated, “Sad that it has to be at a funeral. Real sad.”

      We’ve had two gang related funerals in our town and one more coming up. At the biggest one, almost every fifth person was an undercover cop and bullet proof vests were the order of the day. The family left the casket open until the last moment so everyone could see the victim was really dead and there was a video tape of the closing of the casket and transfer into the hearse, so everyone knew it was over.

      Unfortunately, one more person associate with that tragic mess will be buried sometime this week.

      May God Almighty protect those who attend that funeral. What a waste, what a terrible, terrible waste.

      No, it’s not a joke. And it’s something that the local police forces dread because when they have to wade into the fight to break it up, they are ALWAYS seen as the bad guys.

      The funeral directors also want to get these types of funerals over as quickly as possible simply because their job is to get the body from the funeral home to the church and then to the interment site as smoothly and with as much dignity as possible. It’s bad enough when the family is hysterical, but when things come to blows, it can get really, really ugly.

    I wonder if it was an iron, as in ironing board, or iron as in tire iron? I am not so sure you can actually kill someone with an iron made in china. Unless it had a 100 watt bulb in it, then surely it is a deadly weapon and should be outlawed. I hope Obama stops all iron manufacturing until we can find out who’s ass to kick.

    I hate it when I am right. Everytime I hear a story like this I think to myself, I bet they were black. Sadly, 99%of the time, they are. I have also noticed, when there is a story on the news about a murder, shooting, kidnapping, robbery, etc… If the suspect is black, they don’t say anything about race. If the suspect is white they do.
    Whenever one of these stories comes up and it actually is a white person, I am actually kind of relieved, white people actually do bad things too. I know this is not racial, it is cultural.
    The reason I know these problems are cultural is that I know many blacks that do not act like animals. They work hard, have families, a house, and a boat, go to church on Sunday, vote conservatively, and are decent human beings. Most of them were not raised in the “ghetto” culture. Many had parents that got them out of the ghetto, or they are older and wiser now and have learned to not act like animals.
    I also have some nephews, and nieces that are black. One nephew works hard, owns a house and 2 cars, does not beat his wife, does spank his kids, and is an all around good guy. The rest of them pretty much live stereotypical lives, welfare, food stamps, lazy, no respect or discipline, craziness. It is really embarrassing to be seen in public with my “white” half-sisters that have married black men and act like black women. Even alot of black people look at them like they are crazy or have the plague.

      Thank you. I agree that some black people act like hoodlums. Then again, I know black people with or getting their doctorate degrees, churchgoers, and ordinary people homeschooling their kids or taking their kids to gymnastics.

      Don’t know too many (if any) hoodlums… but then again, I don’t hang out in places where people who are going to do stuff like this hang out. My husband’s dad would qualify for the hoodlum category, but neither me nor my husband have ever met him.

      Only inconsiderate people point out typo’s made by the writers on this site. There is a tactful way to let the writer’s know of an error by emailing them. In some cases, they are quoting other written stories and it may be that the practice is to post as written and then sometimes they can fix mistyped wording.

      Also, practice what you preach. We expect no typo’s from the peanut gallery ever.

    Gosh it reminds me of the Foxworthy jokes, You might be a red neck……..Interesting cast of people. The man who died was wrong to break into someones home. It was his choice and he paid the price but he had a family that deserved to mourn their loss without this kind of fiascal. It makes me sad to see the decline of morals and respect in our society. I will not say that he deserved to die but I have to say the home owner or renter, deserved to defend himself.

      It‘s interesting I’m reading a book by Thomas Sowel and he talks about this very thing. It‘s not that there’s been a decline in morals, it’s that the morals, at least they kind of morals you are talking about have never been there.

      I live a short distance from where this happened in Phoenix; the story I am getting from church members who know many in the fight claim it was an slur made about the dead man that started this mess.
