CNBC Analyst Loses It Over Obama’s Buffett Rule: ‘Absolutely Not!’

Rick Santelli, the CNBC analyst who was the impetus for the Tea Party movement, absolutely lost it Wednesday while talking about Obama’s Buffett rule, which would raise taxes on the top income earners. Santelli’s argument? The whole thing is a bait-and-switch, and it wouldn’t even do anything to put a dent in the debt. Or as Santelli says, “Debt!”

“Let’s play a little game,” Santelli said while using a whiteboard to illustrate his points, later adding: “Take a million dollars away from these people [the rich]! Just take a whole million from them, okay! … You see what I’m getting at? Gee, let’s take a billion away from those filiers, what does that do? It cleans out one month [of the debt]!”

“You see what the problem is,” he went on. “We could bash people, we could drag the people who used to be called successful … down.”

He added: “Does the commander-in-chief have a solution? Absolutely not!”

Then he reached defcon 1*:

People don’t really want to hear solutions. They want to change the dialogue, bait and switch, so we get more worried about what people pay, what’s fair! You know what, how are my kid’s opportunities affected by how many millionaires there are? I don’t see that their opportunities are affected! You know what I see that’s going to affect their opportunities? 15.6 Trillion!

And that was only part of it. See the entire thing yourself:

(H/T Right Scoop)

*Author’s note: originally I had “defcon 5.” But as an astute reader and our own tech person pointed out, it is a common misconception that five is the highest level — defcon 1 is the most severe.

IMO spending other peoples money is just as addictive as oxycodine, it has a special place in our system to fix things, but once it’s abused it is very destructive.

What better example of this then the GSA, a Federal agency that has no oversight, has it’s own income, and has now figured out they can use the tax payers funds to enrich themself and abuse their jobs. They know no one will ever make them pay for their excesses, they are union members.

Meanwhile our dear leader speaks of his Buffet Plan, that he is now calling the Reagan Plan, when in fact it’s Barry’s Plan to steal more money from tax payers.

RODT… You bring up a good point about no oversight and a bureaucracy stealing money from the people…

I wonder why no one has pursued where the money from the fines issues by the EPA and OSHA go? Someone, somewhere is getting a lot of cash from those two entities alone… Now, think about all of the other bureaucracies and their authority to hand out fines… It appears to be another redistribution of wealth from companies to somewhere/someone else… The bad part about it, these entities have been doing this long before Barry…

We have to drastically cut spending, and maybe even LOWER some taxes to get this DEBT under control. One can LOWER taxes and collect MORE REVENUE, imagine that my friends. It’s even been done before – look at what Reagan did.

But NO, this fool occupying the WH is hell bent on Communism, pure and simple! His OWS will be the tip of the Revolution, along with Unions, NBPP and Nation of Islam. Beware of what comes next my good Americans, we are heading toward HELL ON EARTH in the near future, mark my words!!!!!

Unfortunately, your thought that a lack of oversight is causing this mess is off mark. I’ve been to awards ceremonies for fellow Marines whose “honorable” action was to spend your tax dollars on frivolous junk so that the unit wouldn’t lose any funding in the following fiscal year. And I’m not joking or exaggerating in the least. MALS-39 has given this type of award along with every other logistics unit in the military I’d be willing to bet. The problem is not a lack of oversight. No, the commanders and managers know what they are doing and why they are doing it. They want money to make themselves feel more important. The more your unit or department spends or has control of, the more clout you have and the more you can trade for things you need. Ever seen an episode of MASH where Radar is trading supplies he doesn’t need to get something his commander wants? Well, that kind of crap has been going on for a long time.

The only lack of oversight is in the American public’s ability to vote. People keep casting votes for R‘s and D’s and it doesn’t do them any good. The people they vote into office know exactly what they are doing and why. There is oversight, and it is driving us onto a plantation.

SGTB – good points. May I add one thing about budgets! I used to work for the govt, so I know this to be true. IF a dept gets X dollars, they HAVE to spend it ALL, or they have to turn in the surplus, AND the next year they will get that less by the amount of the SURPLUS they turned in the prior year. So, it is set up to be spend, spend and spend more by the legislation! NO MORE, vote folks into office who have a damn brain and work under the Constitution, not ones who will trample it (read Progressives, who can have D‘s or I’s or R’s after their names), it makes no difference!

Biggest problem is that most folk under $100,000 don’t pay any taxes yet they take – take and -take.
Remember when Obama was selecting Szar‘s and 6 had to decline because they wern’t paying thier taxes. Of course the only man that could save the USA had a problem also – Turbo Tax Timmie. With this lie it slipped thru unlike Anthony Weiners lie. Then theres Good Old Charlie Rangle – screwed us for almost a million $$. And then theres Warren Buffit telling the rich to pay more while he owes over a Billion $$. I would be kissing up to Obama also if I owed a billion bucks. I’d have two racing stripers on each side of my nose. If we get a new President first order would be to put the IRS to work and give agents a 5% incentive for each bust over $1000.00.

Damn right, money you don’t spend should stay in your budget for the next year, after say 6 years, 90% of the 6 year old surplus should be taken and divided equally with the workers in your division/group as a bonus. Where you are rewarded for constantly saving government money, and every one that helped save, gets a cut. Currently they more you spend over budget, the bigger your bonus is. ;-(

“IMO spending other peoples money is just as addictive as oxycodine, it has a special place in our system to fix things …”

But it doesn’t fix things. It ALWAYS leaves the economy less well off. It’s only “beneficial” AFTER the government has outlawed your ability to underbid others.

Like the saying goes, government chops off your leg, gives you a crutch, and says, “See, if it wasn’t for government, you wouldn’t be able to walk.”

Welfare programs CAUSE unemployment through higher costs of production. There is absolutely nothing wrong with price deflation – this is what increases the purchasing power of the money you have (at least, in a sound money economy it does).

Please watch this video which explains this principle as applied to the price of housing.

“At first, the only “cut” was in Carter’s last-minute loony-tunes estimates for the future. But in a few short years, Reagan’s spending surpassed even Carter’s irresponsible estimates. Instead, Reagan not only increased government spending by an enormous amount – so enormous that it would take a 40 percent cut to bring us back to Carter’s wild spending totals of 1980 – he even substantially increased the percentage of government spending to GNP. That’s a “revolution”?”

Buffet does not even support the buffet rule. If he did, his company would just pay the billion they owe in back taxes and stop fighting the IRS. That has a bad sound to it doesn’t it? I mean, a billion in back taxes. Man that’s horrible.

Interesting video. It’s reminiscent of the one you used to post of Reagan calling for the rich to pay their fair share. Why did you ever stop linking to that video? Oh yea, because he was talking about loopholes which allowed people to pay zero taxes. Zero as in not one cent, nothing, nil. Or the same amount that GE pays to put it in layman’s terms. Not that GE paying no taxes has ever bothered you enough to condemn them here, that I have seen anyway.

Does this new link you have just edit out the part where Reagan talks about those paying zero taxes? I just assumed it did.

Both of you have good points and I will agree with both scenarios. We will take that as a base assumption. So what needs to happen is that every department (unit) is given a specific set of tasks (instead of some global mission statement that overreaches or can be massaged). Then those units need to use, say the 2008 budget (the last year we had one) and be told there is your money, accomplish the mission. Now having said that I am not an across the board type guy, it is the easy way to NOT make decisions about what is ESSENTIAL and what we could eliminate entirely. In the case of the military as long as congress not only provides the money but also the specific weapons systems we will continue to have really expensive weapons that take too long to develop because someone is always changing the requirement. Then if a system is obsolete or a failure SOME congressman will fight for it because it is in his/her district. It would be better if the military asked for a system that addressed X ***** in the armor and then had a group of money and military experts that could not be lobbied, put it out for bids and production so that congress was not involved in procurement. They have not proven up to the job of elevating the nations interest above their next re-election bid.

Definition: A system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

decendentof56 says, “Reagan did not do or say these things: Bow to a Saudi king…”

Decendent, seriously man, your understanding of diplomacy must be limited to interactions with people in your city or maybe county. You’ve never been overseas have you? And you’ve certainly never done business overseas, let alone diplomacy. In any case, Reagan probably didn’t bow to Saudi King, I don’t know. I don’t know that he ever met one. But in any case, Bush did more than bow to a Saudi King, he kissed him. Here’s a couple of photos for you:

      http://www.google.com/search?q=bush+kissing+saudi+king&hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7GGNI_enUS449&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=tIeHT4TBE6uK8AHPsZyjCA&ved=0CCkQsAQ&biw=1285&bih=789

You can probably guess that I’m not a big Bush fan, but one thing I’ll give him credit for is keeping our relationship with Saudi Arabia airtight. He did an awesome job, even though they are, you know Muslims (Bush spoke highly of the Muslim religion too).

Decendent, please try to understand what’s going on here. A bow to this person or that doesn‘t mean anything except to avoid ticking off the person you’re trying to business with. Something you know from your own dealings with people, but something you are seemingly unaware happens on an international scale.

I don’t know that Buffett is giving away 99% of his income to charity although I know his intention is to give most of his money to charity at some point (like when he dies, something he knows isn’t to many years off). His tax rate is low, I imagine, because most of his income is invested and taxed as capital gains, around 15% I believe.

Doctors, at least 80% of your post are quotes from other people. You have plenty of brains. Do what you want of course, but you can elevate the dialogue by posting your own opinions, then providing links to support whatever facts you are basing your opinions on.

Rule #2: Democrats, if left unchecked, will tax the crap out of anything and everyone in order to increase the size of government, which will in turn require even more taxes. Rinse and repeat.

There you go again JZ saying Reagan supported the Buffet rule. Capitol Gains tax is not a tax “loophole” as Reagan was talking about. The gentleman he spoke of was using shelters that the Tax Reform act of 1986 “fixed”, I use that term loosely.
If you wanna make an argument for double taxation, go right ahead, at least you would be making an honest argument. But you know this. Lets say the Buffet rule is in place now, he would most likely still pay a lower percentage than his secretary, BECAUSE HE DOESN’T EARN AN INCOME! He pays capitol gains tax on his profit and it is a lower percentage BECAUSE HE ALREADY PAYED TAXES ON THAT INCOME AT A MUCH HIGHER RATE! So, it would only affect small to medium business and maybe some doctors and lawyers. Probably wouldn’t affect wall street much either. Your entire argument is the same as Barry and it’s a completely contrived argument. Total and complete dishonesty.

A millionaire keeps a little more of his rightful fruits of his labor, and buys a new boat. The boat company pays its employees, pays dividends to its stockholders, and pays its suppliers who pay their employees, pays dividends to its stockholders, and pays its suppliers, and so on down the line. The boat company also rewards its salesman with a bonus in addition to his commission, and he celebrates by throwing a party. Pays caterers who pays their employees, buys more supplies, etc, etc, etc.

It’s not so simple. Sweet Old Barak is getting the people riled up to hate those who have been successful. While you are paying attention to this distraction he and his Tsars are really after something else. This is designed to distract from other issues that make Sweet Old Barak look bad like gas prices, Fast and Furious and the restriction on drilling. The unemployent rate and the falling value of the dollar, the plunging stock market, etc etc.
      Remember WATCH THE OTHER HAND.

Whoooooooo…. way too much math (and planning) for most liberals! Numbers scribbled on a board will actually cause thinking, and that could be dangerous.

In response to Rick Santelli‘s ideas about blocking future generations’ opportunities with immeasurable debt and strangled wealth production (and to use some twisted liberal logic):

***If you don’t like people having a million or more dollars, then don’t be a millionaire!***

Your last statement reminds me of a program I watched years ago where the wealthy husband was being taken to divorce court by his wife and the classic country song, “She got the gold-mine & I got the shaft” was in play. Guess what the husband did after the final papers were signed & sealed.?…..he got out of the corporate race and moved to a small community & worked as a clerk at a gas station for $8.00 an hr. and claimed he was the happiest man on the planet after making his decision. His greedy wife & selfish children had to down-size their lifestyle. Of the 3 children, one child didn‘t need all the stink’n stuff and went to live with his dad. There was a follow-up years later & the x-wife & two kids didn’t fare well & hated their humble lifestyle & the husband & son opened up a small business together & are doing well….the son did go to college & did get a degree but chose to go back to the small community & enjoy life….Push comes to shove, government may want to embrace the wealthy if they want to continue the spending to take care of the “takers” in this country.

    He’s right.
It is Barack Obama taking us over this cliff of govt. debt and somehow he wants to blame successful people because his spending is out of control.
He does all the spending while we have to do all the paying.

In the end the federal gov’t only actual responsibility is to protect the nation. Not fight other nations wars, not stop samali pirates, create democracies across the globe. PROTECT OUR SHORES AND BORDERS FROM ENEMIES OF THE CONSTITUTION FORIEGN AND DOMESTIC.

One thing a liberal does not do and that is take responsibility for anything gone wrong. For that matter neither does a conservative. What is going on over this whole thing is merely an extension of divide and conquer. It does not matter if the division is over money, race, healthcare. It don’t matter. It don’t matter if it is a lie. The big win is in the division. As long as Americans fight with each other we all lose period. Even the lock and load americans. Pretty sad.
There is a way to defeat this and I can tell you it is not by resorting to ideological lines in the sand. Most people don’t have the stomach for it including retired marines which I consider really sad due to the respect I have for them.
One thing I do know is that truth will prevail and the rhetoric of the left will fail for the sham it is.

Sooner or later real cuts will have to be made. They should have been done earlier. The sooner the cuts are made the less the cuts have to be. If they wait too long they will have to be 100% and we will have 0% oportunity left in this country. It is looking like the last case scenario is what it is going to be! The plan of the Progressive/Markist/Socialist/Godless/ Evil people is to make this country into a third world nation because America has succeeded on the backs of other nations who have had no opportunity. There is no truth there. The fact that there is no opportunity in those nations is due to the fact of their oppressive governments means nothing to these people.

The good news, finally, is that I think people – even some of the non-radical libs, that maybe some of their “brilliant” ideas DON’T work and WHY. I PRAY SO !!! All they have heard from mentors/lib professors is their side with no one to explain how it doesn’t work after all. Maybe this is a God-given chance, since a lot of people are scared and angry – and some are finally getting out of the non-confrontational comfort zones and being heard. Pray for more and more of this – and that they are on the Communist networks where they listen for the “news”. Also more and more exposure of the truths about how awful many of the liberals/Progressives are liars and very unpleasant and UNFAIR people, etc…..for more to listen to the Consv. programs – especially Rush who explains well about it all & has converted many.

All of this has to do with interest rates … what happens to the price of existing bonds that currently have low interest rates when interest rates go up? They decline in value …. who owns a lot of these bonds . .. the rich. What happens if the government keeps printing money without more and more tax dollars to pay the interest? Interest rates will go up and the rich holding the low yield bond will go down and they will be worth less. Yes it is bait and switch. To allow the rich more time to hedge an scale out of their low yielding bonds into the hands of others. And, it also prevents new people from becoming rich and allows those who are rich to remain so since they have all of their wealth well protected an if you can get to them, then you can get to anyone and no one will be rich. We will all be poor and controlled by a tyrant who will take power just as he takes our wealth.

I get so sick of hearing Obama and his fairness garbage . It is getting old hearing him prosperity and peddling the notions of communism to his unsuspecting audiences . What I ask myself daily , is how can his middle-class and poor supporters not understand that Obama is giving their own prosperity chances the death knell ? How can people be so stupid . Of course there are many of them who understand what he is doing , but there are millions who actually believe Obama wants to help them , who thinks he is on their side .The sychophants from the left have obviously eliminated critical thinking skills in our schools .

Oh, he mentioned that when he announced his presidential run in 2007.
“… In the face of a politics that’s shut you out, that’s told you to settle, that’s divided us for too long, you believe we can be one people, reaching for what’s possible, building that more perfect union.”
and that when a child turns to violence, there’s a hole in his heart no government could ever fill.
“… It was in these neighborhoods that I received the best education I ever had, and where I learned the true meaning of my Christian faith.”
“After three years of this work, I went to law school, because I wanted to understand how the law should work for those in need. I became a civil rights lawyer, …”
      >~~~>”And that is why, in the shadow of the Old State Capitol, where Lincoln once called on a divided house to stand together, where common hopes and common dreams still, I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for President of the United States.” <~~~Look both speeches up and read: it
