CNN’s Candy Crowley Grills W.H. Advisor Robert Gibbs Over Demands for Romney’s Tax Returns

CNN‘s Candy Crowley discussed Harry Reid’s wild accusations that Mitt Romney is a tax cheat with White House advisor Robert Gibbs on Sunday, implying during the interview that the president’s re-election campaign is behind the attacks.
Reid has been maintaining that Romney has not paid taxes in ten years in an apparent effort to get presidential candidate to release his tax returns, even claiming, “Let him prove that he has paid taxes, because he hasn’t,” on the Senate floor.
“If Chicago wanted Reid to stop, he would stop, but Chicago doesn’t want him [to stop],” Crowley asserted.
But Gibbs maintained that he doesn’t think “anybody has control of Harry Reid.”

The two quarreled over whether Romney has done anything wrong in the past, until Gibbs claimed: “Mitt Romney could go to Kinkos, he could photocopy his tax returns…he could hand them out to reporters all over the country, and you know what? We wouldn’t talk about this tomorrow.”
Republicans have suggested that that’s not necessarily the case, and more likely, Democrats are looking to use the tax returns as a weapon against Romney.
Ann Coulter, for instance, wrote: “Democrats aren’t going to find any personal dirt on the clean-cut Mormon, so they need complicated tax filings going back decades in order to create the illusion of scandal out of boring financial records.”
Seemingly validating this theory, Robert Gibbs added: “The whole world would know exactly what loopholes [Mitt Romney] is taking advantage of…”
Candy Crowley concluded: “So…Chicago’s not going to tell Harry Reid to stop.”

Posted on August 5, 2012 at 10:31pmI hate the fact that there are Republican surrogates saying that this “ten years of taxes” conversation is not going to stop and that if they were advising the Romney campaign they’d suggest providing a few more years of tax returns.- Yes Ed Rollins I mean you. First of all Ann Coulter is correct – no matter what you give them, they will want more and they will employ their modus operandi – distort and attack. So with the main stream media as Obama’s full time lap dogs Romney is damned if he does and damned if he doesnt so… why give Obama any ammunition? I liked the advice of one commentator (on This Week I believe) that suggested that Romney essentially make fun of and dismiss the incredibly pathetic and dishonest Harry Reid and end it there. Personally I think that is worth a shot. With that said I want to know when Romney is going to come out, guns blazing at our corrupt, dishonest, incompetent, nasty President.

He says this with Obama’s birth certificate not release for years, then a false copy. Obama refuses to release his high school and college transcripts.

I will be in front of the IRS bldg at 4:00 with cameras rolling. If I have committed a felony let them come arrest me. I will not bow down to bullies, so if the IRS does not arrest me I will not address this matter further.”
But what I would really really like is for him to say “I’ll release them as soon as Obama releases his collage records. Just sayin’..”

Ron Paul and many other prominent conservatives are already saying that he should show them. The call for Pres. Obama to release the items you suggested has not made it to the mainstream of America or the halls of Congress and can only be found on web sites like this and in crowds of like-minded people, and on show that want to paint the President out to be secretive. Besides, they are not the same thing. Pres. Obama has released the exact same information to the public that every other president has. (Example)
1. IRS Forms showing the relevant years.
2. Mitt and Ann’s names with the dates of each year.
3. A big black mark everywhere on each form that shows where a monetary amount should be.
4. Mitt and Ann’s signatures plus the date signed, at the bottom of each IRS Form submitted.

What is characterized as a loophole is a deduction placed in the insanely complex tax code which if you qualify to take you can legally take.
Think about it – if there was anything wrong with Romney’s returns, even a misspelled word, don’t you think the IRS would take the occasion to make an example out of him?
The Democrats want nothing more than to take what I assume is a very complicated return and characterize every deduction and exemption they can as a negative – when in fact, the are all legal.
If they don’t like the deductions and exemptions – TAKE THEM OUT OF THE TAX CODE.
Also, there is nothing wrong with having money off shore. It is 100% legal, and any and all of the Democrats who are pitching a bitch need to fist look at who in their own ranks have money off shore (not to mention who are real tax cheats…. most notably Charlie Rangel, and also, no surprise, Harry Reid and his questionable land deals. How about Obama’s questionable purchase of the subdivided lot from Tony Resco (which after it was sub divided rendered the half that Resco retained un-buildable – giving Obama a large, vacant lot at below half price).

How many more should he release? How many did any of the former presidents release? These calls for his college transcripts and real S.S. number and adoption records, etc., are not mainstream. You only read about them on sites like this, or hear about them in crowds with like-minded people or on shows that want to further the thought that the President is a “secretive man”. The calls for Romney to release his taxes have not only found their way to the halls of Congress, they have also gone mainstream. The release of Pres. Obama’s information has not. It’s still thought of in more of the conspiracy theory way. I’m sure if he were called upon to release this information from the proper authorities, he would. It is hardly an attack to ask Romney to release at least as many tax returns as Pres. Obama has. His refusal is what is making this a bigger story than it should be, and makes it look like he is trying to hide something. Is that a gamble you are all willing to take? Mainstream America on all sides is starting to demand his tax returns. I don’t think that this is going to go away….

You guys are allowing the RNC to commit federal crimes, break party rules, use Obama style politics in the Republican party to put a candidate that leans so far left, he is about to fall over. He will not do anything about the debt, his plan will cause the debt to go higher. The reason the Tea Party started, by Ron Paul and his supporters in Dec of 2007, was to show discourse over our debt and the FED’s part in this disastrous economic bubble. Even though the establishment co-opted the Tea Party movement, they had common ground on this issue. For Tea Party voters to vote for Mitt Romney, is for Tea Party voters to throw out their principles that got them into the Tea Party in the first place.

You already read that Gibb’s wants to know what “loopholes” he is using. Here’s the thing… loopholes aren’t illegal. Loopholes exist for two reasons: Congress and/or the IRS didn’t think through the legislation well enough OR they left themselves a way out of paying as much tax, kinda like they tend to exempt themselves from other legislation like drug tests.
The guy released last years and the estimates for this year. I wouldn’t give them the bat to hit me with, either.

I dont think they are saying he is a felon at all. If he cheated on his taxes the IRS would have sent thugs and beaten Romney to a pulp live on tv. No I think he paid little to no taxes through loopholes and the DNC want to capitalize on it. They are going to attack him being rich regardless.
The problem for Romney is they wont let this issue go. He can go and have his whole campaign on defense mode the rest of this election hold out or he can flip the narrative show them and start attacking Obama.

Yes, that is the fear. All of the political types know that Romney will not be able to stonewall this through November. The shame of it all is that we are still in the primary and are not ‘STUCK’ with Romney. Now is the time to properly vet the ‘presumptive nominee’ and make sure there is nothing in his taxes that would destroy him this fall. If there is something in his record, the party can figure out an alternative that more people will be happy with.
We have tried to warn republicans all along that Romney will say and do anything to become president, including changing his positions. Romney is looking out for himself, he would rather drop the bombshell AFTER the republican convention

You may endear yourself to others who lack an anchor point, but you will not affect Libertarians, Constitutionalists, and others who truly love the ideal of the United States of America more than a single party or candidate. I support some of Paul’s positions, but his isolationist positions simply do not hold water in a post 18th century America. Furthermore, I have read many vicious attacks from Pauliacs against Santorum and Romney, but I never hear them attacking Obama in the same way. The enemy is at the gates, and how do the Pauliacs respond? The want to burn down the fort, rather than engaging the true enemy.
You Paul supporters need to give up the ghost, and just get behind our nominee. Romney wasn’t my first choice either, but he is now. He will be far FAR better than Obama.
If Rand Paul has enough sense to get behind Romney, then why won‘t his fathers’ supporters do the same?
This election is too important to stand on the sidelines and try to undermine our own side.

In this forum, I rarely talk about President Obama directly because this is a conservative site. I don’t see a need to comment on the President because the vast majority here are already against his reelection. The battleground here is for the conservative, independent, and libertarian factions.

It would be next to impossible to get anything done as governor of Mass if he took a hardcore conservative stance on everything. In the end, Romney is still a politician. I think he will surprise many who consider him a RINO, if he takes over the WH next year. And more importantly, we need to elect a republican senate to ensure conservative policies are restored.
